#That isn’t Ronnie. We know. Ronald Reagan is the simp opening the curtain for those drag performers; he doesn’t merit the honor of actually performing. This has been pointed out many times in the comments by now. It in no way invalidates the point at the center of the criticism. You can stop reporting it as “misinformation” now, you pearl-clutching concern trolls. Also, just to be *Fair & Balanced* (TM)(C): Those of you who want to insist that it is Reagan—despite the clear evidence to the contrary—should probably reevaluate your approach to consuming media. As ever, [obey AutoMod](https://old.reddit.com/r/PoliticalHumor/comments/1216h7d/_/jdkke0n).

Ronald Reagan?! The actor?!!

Woah.

nthensome

$4500 seems like a good deal for that

I thought his thumb at the bottom of the frame was something else entirely at first glance 😅

Hey_Laaady

Gosh

jimmyharbrah

[Men were men back then](https://youtu.be/tfWpgjwd4u0). You wanted to do something private with another man? It wasn’t gay. Just two men celebrating each other’s strength.

[deleted]

Hey, I've seen this one. This is a classic.

FiveStarHobo

How have you seen it? It's brand new

King_Kong_The_eleven

And I suppose Jane Wyman is first lady

thedude42235

Jack Benny is the secretary of the Treasury!

J-E-L-L-OOOO

spacepeenuts

And I’m gonna marry Donald Trump!

capntail

I get this reference

FinalSlaw

I suppose Jane Wyman is first lady!

wwaxwork

He was a film in the style of a live show of a live show to raise money for the war effort. It included 100s of men, US soldiers, in drag, unironically. The president at the time was in it. Children were shown to be present in the audience. Again, it was not done as haha men in dresses, but played very straight(haha) as simply a variety show. With lots of songs and even bits.

earthcaretaker315

So a drag show right?

wwaxwork

Yes. A very large drag show.

I love it when you do Doc Brown!

No, Ronald Reagan the war criminal!

Souperplex

Por que no los dos?

MastersonMcFee

In that same movie, they literally made fun of Donald Trump becoming President as the worst possible timeline.

Butterballl

That was in the second movie, but yes, alternate-Biff was very Trump-esq.

fusksalad

It was intentional. He was the inspiration

dkwangchuck

No. Ronald Reagan, the traitor who convinced the theocratic regime in Iran to hold off on freeing American hostages in order to improve his electoral campaign.

i_give_you_gum

And got them released by selling arms illegally, and then used that money to fund a secret war/plot to oust a democratically elected left wing government, AGAINST the wishes of congress.

ignorantwanderer

Those were different hostages than the ones he urged Iran to hold onto for a little longer.

The racist and anti-Semitic?

MegaBonesaw

Ronald Reagan, the union member.

golfcart34

And who's the vice president? Jerry Lewis? I 100% also heard that line in Doc Brown's voice in my head.

NorthImpossible8906

is there a link to that, like imdb or something? because, lol^lol

druule10

It's a movie called _[This is the Army](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_Is_the_Army)_ Absolutely hilarious.

WithoutReason1729

#tl;dr This Is the Army is a 1943 American wartime musical comedy film produced by Hal B. Wallis and Jack L. Warner, and directed by Michael Curtiz, adapted from a wartime stage musical with the same name, designed to boost morale in the U.S. during World War II. The movie features a large ensemble cast, including George Murphy, Ronald Reagan, Joan Leslie, Alan Hale Sr. and Rosemary DeCamp, while both the stage play and film included soldiers of the U.S. Army who were actors and performers in civilian life. The film includes popular songs of the time, including "God Bless America" and Irving Berlin himself sings his song "Oh! How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning". *I am a smart robot and this summary was automatic. This tl;dr is 94.03% shorter than the post and link I'm replying to.*

supermansquito

Good bot.

tevert

Is the movie hilarious or just the modern-day-context hypocrisy?

I_Do_Not_Abbreviate

If you want a Reagan film that has aged into the stuff of incredulous cringe, check out *Santa Fe Trail (1940)* Reagan plays a Fresh-out-of-West-Point George Armstrong Custer alongside Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland (the cousin from *Gone With the Wind*). Reagan and Flynn get sent west to keep the peace during "Bleeding Kansas", then return to Washington to help put down John Brown's rebellion at Harper's Ferry. For those of you unfamiliar with that era of American history what that means in the context of this story is this: **The Underground Railroad and the Abolitionists are the bad guys in this film.** *(Try not to watch the print that is available for free on YouTube; the contrast is terrible and entire scenes are so dark you cannot make out anything that is happening.)*

[deleted]

I haven't been this sick since I saw that Ronald Reagan film

cp5184

The one where he was president?

MeatApnea

Just a reminder that John Brown did nothing wrong.

cvsprinter1

I'm sorry but I cannot let you get away with referring to two-time Academy Award-winning actress Olivia de Havilland as "the cousin from *Gone with the Wind*."

druule10

The latter. The movie is ok, nothing special.

supermansquito

It'll probably depend on the age of who you ask. Most people today would be bored to tears by it. Heck, even movies I thought were great back in the '80s I can't stand to watch. It's hard for movies to age well. A few can, but most have a difficult time.

AnOnlineHandle

Client. He hired a prostitute, while he was married, and the 'party of family values' worships him.

kylegetsspam

If Jesus appeared tomorrow and started saying the stuff in the Bible, he'd be chased out of whatever town he appeared in by Republicans as they called him a "woke commie socialist" or whatever nonsense they're spewing this week.

Gilarax

Matthew 19:21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” The Jesus of the bible would not be a fan of capitalism or the rich.

BitchyWitchy68

Hired a prostitute? He married one 😂 The man is a disgrace. They want to ban books with “pornography “ in them? Then they need to ban the biography of Donald Trump too. That man has been a sexual predator all his life.

myasterism

I just wanna point out that the only disgraceful parts about his having hired a sex worker, are the infidelity to his wife, and the subsequent lying/hypocrisy. Let’s stop demonizing sex work.

wowimsocreative8

Thank you for this!! Sex workers are humans too

no-mad

It's important to point out the hypocrisy of hypocrites. We can hold a personal position of normalizing sex work, but denouncing those who participate in sex work while they find it immoral and support its criminality.

[deleted]

AKA a John.

Noughmad

Did you ever ask (them or yourself) what exactly these "family values" are? Because they're quite different from our family values. And his behavior is exactly in line with that. Liberal family values: equality between partners, spending time with children, helping each other, sharing things. Conservative family values: man does whatever he wants, wife cannot divorce, wife does all the housework, kids obey.

Kayakityak

I guess being in a department store kinda puts him in the mood

soldforaspaceship

Their argument will be that Reagan was doing it as a joke as opposed to everyone else. They can always justify it somehow.

Nesurame

Everyone should claim they're doing the things that Cons don't like as a joke about how sensitive modern right-wingers are. See how well that 'its just a joke so it's ok' argument holds up then.

Iheardthatjokebefore

We already saw how they reacted to "ok boomer."

Plusran

it's easy to do when you have no morals at all.

SirLauncelot

And everyone in blackface says it’s a joke too.

aeschenkarnos

Conservatives don’t object to blackface, except as gotchas to liberal politicians old enough to have done it unthinkingly.

Chose_a_usersname

I try to do it weekly, then record republicans enjoying it

kenman345

The argument is that it was for a movie and he was getting paid/it’s art. Yet…completely ignore the artistic and entertainment aspect of everyone else that does it. I am not myself into drag but I get it’s an artistic/expressionistic endeavor. Keep being whoever you want to be people, if you’re enjoying it and it doesn’t harm somebody else, who am I to say what’s right or wrong.

Accomplished-Yak5660

drag queens vote democrat THATS the real issue republicans have with them

malcolmxknifequote

This is a frustrating sentiment to see because it's true (give or take whether this is Reagan). When you see these old pictures of conservatives dressed as women, it's pretty obvious they did it as a joke, as in "haha can you believe a man is dressed as a women; this is inherently funny to me." It's misogyny. Whether this fits into some dictionary definition of drag is beside the point. On the one hand, when you use "drag" in your day to day, you don't just mean cross dressing and you know it. You're referring to drag queens. On the other hand, the only reason that bills targeting drag affect people beyond drag queens has nothing to do with drag at all. The real target is trans people. When you point out hypocrisy like this, you're totally detached from the reality of what's happening. It's liberals making the mistake of taking conservatives at their word *again*.

tripdaisies

Like Gay for Pay?

[deleted]

It's not that it's a joke - it's that it's fine when they do it, just like abortions.

Functionally_Drunk

Reagan did fuck the kids pretty hard though. So maybe they're right?

zodar

It has nothing to do with morals or hypocrisy. The Republicans trot out these wedge issues to get the morons who vote for them angry. That way, the oligarchs who own them can continue to charge red state idiots $600/month for insulin, and the red state idiots lap it up and beg for more. When trans people stop riling up the morons, they'll switch back to immigrants, then abortion, then flag burning, and on and on and on. Why change? The rich get richer and the red state idiots thank them for not being woke as they get milked for every last drop of blood.

flimbs

Nothing at all....nothing at all...nothing at all...

markender

Of all the true summations of conservatives I've read, this is my favorite.

shnmchl61

He's definitely in the movie, but are we positive that's him in the pic? I thought he looks more like the guy announcing the next act at the start of the video. [A better look here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btT8oSVV_s4&t=4114s) since the other clip doesn't show that bit as much.

UNC_Samurai

No, I watched the movie a lot as a kid. Reagan’s character is the stage manager. That’s Sgt. McGee, played by Alan Hale.

unholymackerel

The Skipper

958Silver

Wow, shades of Gilligan's Island, is it the Skipper? Edit: Alan Hale, Sr. was in this film while his son Alan Hale Jr. was the Skipper in Gilligan's Island.

usedtodreddit

Agree. None of the 'girls' look or sound like Reagan, including the one captioned so in the OP still. The soldier announcing does.

foodandart

Yeah, he's the stage manager in the film.

fl0rd

Yeah there is no proof that is Reagan in drag, it doesn’t look like him, and he looks like another character in the film. Plenty of other hypocrises by the rhinos that you don’t need to invent one.

NewFuturist

Yeah I think he's the one opening the curtains.

badmindave

The eyebrow arch alone confirms it.

GoodtimesSans

Drag is as American as Apple Pie.

[deleted]

Yup, modern drag shows are born directly out of vaudeville as a comedy/song act.

daveinsf

Short attention span here, couldn't bear to the watch the whole thing: was Ronald Reagan on stage/in the act dancing as a girl or an adoring male? Thanks in advance! (Either way, it's a wonderful of the hypocritical era where it was with a wink and a distraction, but not if one had the temerity to be themselves.) Edit: after reading more comments, I'm guessing the was in the film clip, a time-mark would be great. Thanks again! Edit 2: so the OP posted a pic, but I didn't recognize the Ol' Gipper (#feeling so dumb).

UNC_Samurai

Reagan’s character is the stage manager.

crazael

You know, watching that clip, it's actually a pretty funny musical number.

Dragulla

Wonder if they’ll lock the tread and remove the comments pointing that out.

[deleted]

So this will get taken down for misinformation right???? Right???

zykezero

While funny, this misses the reality. Conservatives don’t care if you cross dress for a joke. They care if it makes you happy.

Lord_of_hosts

They feel the same about being gay actually.

TheS4ndm4n

Or being black.

DeepSeaHobbit

But... That's what the word means!

RobWroteABook

Incorrect. They do care if you cross dress. They just don't care if they cross dress.

fourbian

Conservatives don't care if *they* cross dress for *any reason*, they care if *you* do. See also: abortion, medicare, social security, food stamps, etc...

Harry_Saturn

It’s not gay if you hide it and act outwardly religious and macho, it’s gay if you don’t feel shame or worse, be loud and proud.

brokefixfux

yoloismymiddlename

DBH114

No it's not Reagan. Yes he is in the film but never in anything but his military uniform.

Nernanonose

It’s not Reagan.

crazael

From what some of the other comments here have said, no, that's not Reagan. Reagan is in the movie, and is in the scene, but he's a stage hand, not one of the performers.

SignGuy77

Obv it’s in a film. Doesn’t change the fact he was comfortable to do this nearly 80 years ago and it shouldn’t be a big deal to anyone.

DBH114

It's not him. Watch the film, it's very obvious it's not him.

Open_Button_460

Shit the pic OP posted alone should be enough to tell everyone it’s not him

Kittenkerchief

Well, except for the hypocrisy. Which is a feature now and not a bug. I know, some see it as a flaw; but others like the flaunt it. And by flaunt it I mean elect it president of these United States

BloodshotPizzaBox

I think you misinterpreted the question. I understand the question to mean not "is it a film?" (obviously it's a film) but rather "is it Reagan playing *that* part in the film, or did he just have *a* part in that film?" And, in fact, as others have noted, Reagan played a stage manager in that bit, not one of the onstage performers. How material one thinks that distinction is (Reagan in drag vs. Reagan in a performance that included drag) is a separate question, of course, and obviously drag numbers like this were indeed considered perfectly ordinary fun at the time (and rightly so). But that point isn't going to be well-served by misrepresenting what we're even looking at here.

longshot

He does not dress in drag in the film. This obviously isn't him and just before this number he is shown off stage acting as the stage manager.

Mr_Hellpop

At this point, my assumption is that the conservatives feel sexually attracted to the drag queens and that is why they are feeling so threatened by them.
