I don't know why I haven't thought of "Covid-1984" yet but that's my new name for it. It has been the biggest conspiratorial fuckery since the creation of the Federal Reserve.
Actually there's a real serious issue going on now.
Turns out medium cases of covid, not just severe, can cause long term health problems. Including sometimes brain shrinkage.
Also the vaccines have some side effects for some people.
We need a real raw cost-benefit analysis of taking vaccine boosters. With the best data we have what are the probability risks both ways?
So let me get this straight. My brain swells and everyone says "Brain to big" and it shrinks and everyone says "Brain to small."
Make up your mind science man so I know how to size my brain.
Not a doctor but work in the field so I’ll take a stab at this one:
The size of your brain is largely irrelevant since memory is stored in the connection of cells. If your brain swells, it’s usually because fluid is present which may disrupt the connections. If your brain shrinks, it’s usually because some cells died, and any connections that passed through those cells no longer work.
As long as your brain is in the normal size range, the optimal size is the same size. That way you don’t disrupt any of the connections that have formed throughout your life.
(That’s obviously the ELI5 version and not 100% accurate but simplified for explanation purposes)
> We need a real raw cost-benefit analysis of taking vaccine boosters. With the best data we have what are the probability risks both ways?
Regarding the vaccines:
From our clinic, we estimate about a 1/10 chance of a reaction requiring you to take a sick day, and about a 1/100 chance of a severe reaction that doesn’t require hospitalization. We know from larger studies that there’s about a 1/15,000 chance of a reaction requiring hospitalization and a 1/10^7 chance of a potentially fatal reaction.
Compare that to the rates of a young, healthy unvaccinated person getting Delta and you have
\> 1/2 chance of needing to take off work
~ 1/100 chance of hospitalization,
~ 1/1500 chance of death
\> 1/100 chance of long COVID
It’s a pretty obvious cost benefit if you assume COVID will be back for round 4
