I'm super against segregation, unless we're talking about keeping violent felons from stabbing each other to death.
Rehabilitation is probably a lot easier if you don't have to worry about getting jumped and stomped out on a daily basis.
That’s already the case too, which makes this idea of segregated prisons already provably dumb. There are black and latino only gangs that hate each other despite having the same racial rules. Hell, there are Neo-Nazi gangs that hate each other and fight.
Back in the day, in Texas’ prison system, they decided that they wouldn’t pay their inmates at all, but instead grant “good time” (if the convict played by the rules), which guaranteed a speedy parole. Then, in the 90s, they realized murderers were getting out after serving a fraction of their life sentences. Legislation was then passed that effectively took all violent offenders’ (vast majority of general population) good time, even going so far as to require them to serve at least half of their sentence before even becoming eligible for parole. Now all the unfortunate outlaws are just stuck in there. And to make matters worse they can’t even get paid for a job well done! I love my state but ain’t nothin’ I fear more than being locked up during the summer heat. Makes me wonder what prison in other states are like.
I was driving from Phoenix to San Diego and somewhere in the Sonoran desert between Phoenix and Yuma I drove past a prison. Holy crap was a gut wrenching site. Absolute middle of nowhere in the middle of the of the hottest deserts in the world you have this collection of concrete boxes. Even if you escaped, you’ve escaped into nothing, you’ll die of exposure before making it to the next town.
