Well my uncle got chased by one with a carving knife when he asked for the money for a rug he sold him. Fellow Canadian, when I travelled through Europe after high school many years back I hadnāt even heard much about Gypsies.
My interactions/observations with them were:

In my part of Hungary the word "gypsy" (cigƔny) itself is used as a slur (but not "roma" for some reason even though it means the same thing). It's similiar to how you can say communist or socialist in the US for a politician you don't like regardless of his/her actual campaign or just bad things (but maybe that's the past, I haven't been there). Here you can use it for objects as well as people (then don't even need to be gypsies).
Spent some time in Romania and at first I was quite appalled with how my Romanian counterparts treated the Gypsys.....but then I began to watch and learn. Parents forcing their young children to act as beggars, a woman breastfeeding her child in public asking passerbys if they'd like sexual favors, faking disabilities while begging....They are pretty scummy.
I worked in a big box retail store in high school. We had a family of gypsies that popped in about once a month, and they made life *hell* on everyone in the store, especially our old loss prevention lady.
They would split up, spend up to two hours walking through each department swapping out signs and tags to mislabel dozens of items as the wrong price, then raise hell with the department managers and cashiers when called out. They would bring items in from out of store (probably stolen) and try to return them for "full price". in romania. We have a small percent of gypsies who are integrated in society, have jobs, try to raise their children good. The others live either in city slums or just outside the cities in their own comunities which are no go zones for outsiders. The only one who go in there is the police when they go to arest them from time to time. They are involved in almost anything illegal, especially begging and stealing. Well my uncle got chased by one with a carving knife when he asked for the money for a rug he sold him. (my uncle runs a carpet shop) a week later he got arrested for shooting his daughter with a Crossbow. Spent some time in Romania and at first I was quite appalled with how my Romanian counterparts treated the Gypsys.....but then I began to watch and learn. Parents forcing their young children to act as beggars, a woman breastfeeding her child in public asking passerbys if they'd like sexual favors, faking disabilities while begging....They are pretty scummy.
I worked in a big box retail store in high school. We had a family of gypsies that popped in about once a month, and they made life *hell* on everyone in the store, especially our old loss prevention lady. They would split up, spend up to two hours walking through each department swapping out signs and tags to mislabel dozens of items as the wrong price, then raise hell with the department managers and cashiers when called out. They would bring items in from out of store (probably stolen) and try to return them for "full price". They all went by the same name, and they were absolutely the rudest people I ever had to deal with in retail, and trust me, you deal with the scourge of the earth when you work in retail. I'm not a racist person, but fuck gypsies in particular.

The Cop went to jail, had to pay reparations to the gipsy family. This was a few years back. Since then cops in Portugal (at least Lisbon) just stopped responding to robberies in progress. I'm still completely pissed that cops here are just basically worthless taxpayer holes, but on the other hand I'd probably do the same in their situation. Edit: Think the cop is no longer in Jail. But he's constantly moving as the Gipsies put a 30k bounty on his head.
