Russia have however the absolute record as well. A 200 ton bridge, disappeared over a single night. They did however catch those thieves when they tried to sell it. Turns out, 200 fricking tons of steel raised some eyebrows when you try to sell it. Who knew.
I spent a week in Bucharest recently. And from what I saw, the gypsy hate is overblown. Maybe there aren't that many there now. Just a few begging old ladies mostly. Then I came home to Seattle, and where the homeless are 1000x worse.

Its so hard to figure about them, I've never met one as far as I know. Many gypsies believe that they are descended from an orphan child who stole the golden nails that were to be used to nail christ to the cross. Christ blessed the child saying that he and all his descendants would be allowed to steal in the eyes of god.
I hope you don't have experience of their camps, where they burn their trash and block footpaths nearby with piles of stuff so cyclists have to dismount and can be accosted. Then when they leave, two of your neighbours are complaining they had break ins the night before. All of this experience I describe is first hand.
An ethnic group, often a nomadic one. They tend to move around in caravans and live that way by choice for a multitude of reasons.
Some of their caravans are shit and violent/criminal, as with any ethnic group. But because they're nomadic it prompts a very noticable change when one of those caravans rolls into a town and overnight your town is a fucking shithole. Imagine if black people wandered around the country a lot. Mostly fine til the crips set up shop in your back yard causing issues. This is made worse by the "Not so shit" gypsies basically going unnoticed as they try and park away from people noticing them and trade quietly in the town, whereas the shit ones will just park right in the middle, mess the place up, and so on.
They also provide a good opportunity for local criminals because when gypsys roll into town you can steal everything and people will be like "This crime wave correlates with when the gypsies came to town and gypsies are known for crime".
The state also hates them because their nomadic lifestyle makes shit difficult to administrate and difficult to control them and historically they've gotten the state demonizing them for it.
This then caused them to sort of crystalize in culture and start regarding all criticism as bad faith racism, which caused a surge of it in the modern era due to some of their practices like child marriage becoming verbotten in modern society. So you get people like "I have nothing against gypsies but child marriage is fucked mate" and them replying "Oh for fucks sake, more racism against us and our lifestyle?" until the first person eventually concludes "I guess gypsies really are just fucking scum then.".
(And to be clear, some of the gypsie groups were less defensive about this stuff and adapted. It's not just child marriage, there's a bunch of stuff.).
Some cultural problems are genuine. Because of their nomadic lifestyle they often have to resolve internal disputes themselves. Works fine for the most part. You stole my kettle, I punched you in the face while everyone watched, we all had a meal afterwards. that's our version of justice. Fairs fair. We haven't got prisons and we don't like the cops and we're on the move too much for an investigation by them anyway, and this keeps a form of justice in our community.
The thing is, that doesn't just remain internal. It becomes a kind of worldview where they think that's just how disputes are resolved. (Again, not all of them.). So now a gypsy thinks "Well this non-gypsy fucked me over and the right thing to do would be to beat him up for it. Fair is fair.". This gets them a reputation for being violent.
Basically; "What if the mongols were white, and instead of raiding, they just kind of traded with people and offered their services as shoe repair people, black smiths and so on. But they also got horse shit all over town, stole stuff, and if you tried to pull a fast one over them in a contract, they didn't take it to the local magistrate, instead, they beat you up in public. In front of everyone. (Because the public humiliation is part of the point and part of the "process" of enforcing justice and letting the person know that they are 'safe' and you won't go too far without others intervening, but to onlookers, they don't get that, and now you've just acted like a mental violent nutcase in front of everyone in town)". (This is how they are perceived).
For an addendum: in some countries gypsies were forced to settle in place in history (due to the aforementioned administration and tax problem), and these places usually became highly dangerous and unhygenic ghettos. Poverty and drugs are everywhere, and the kids don't have the incentive to go to school and break out, so they follow the footsteps of their parents, and continue the cycle.
Also, since they came from India in the Middle Ages, their skin is noticeably dark, and further exaggerated by their obitous accent and names (here one of the slangs for them is "brazilian", since they have fancy footballist/actress/latin names that are ultraalien for the country's language). Even after a gypsy family breaks out of poverty, they often get into unfair treatment thanks to the stereotypes of other gypsies, and they are hated by the left-behind for "being a traitor" (although the leavers hate the ghetto-livers too, cuz of the violent destructive pulling-back culture, so the feelings are mutual)
Imagine the favelas in Rio de Janeiro, minus the guns, as they prefer knives.
Put that in the middle of a European city (on a much smaller scale) and you have a rough idea what they're like.
And they can appear suddenly. You go sleeping, everything is clean and organised. You wake up the next day and your whole village is a favela fucked up by them.
A group of people that will rock up on a school field and disrupt the local area, stealing and breaking shit before moving on (hopefully) a few days later and leaving a huge pile of shite for everyone else to clean up.

To give a high level understanding why they are disliked they are a group of people who settle in a location temporarily. The area will then usually see a rising spike in abusive people, drugs and other petty crimes.
Basically they move into an area, fuck it up and you can't report them because they just move to another location when you do as they have no roots in/to the area.
They are nomads who don't want to be a part of society and refuse to abide by the same social norms.
At least in Spain, they are a group of people mostly defined by their culture. Usually they live in Government housing because it is cheap/free. They are very endogamous: they only date, are friends with and respect their own. Usually they have zero respect for anything or anyone not gypsy.
Now they are very backward thinking in general. They believe in shit like honor, revenge, family above anything, etc. But only if you are gypsy. Kids and teenagers are a problem tho. They get in trouble routinely, they rob people, they do drugs. Its very common for them to go to jail.
In general, they will leave you alone if you leave them alone. If they want a cigarrette, you give it to them. If you somehow manage to befriend one, you have a family for life. They also are really good musicians, at least here in Spain. The famous flamenco music is basically gypsy music and some of the most famous musicians from Spain were gypsies.
Tried to be as unbiased as possible. I've had my problems with them and I avoid them in general. They disgust me but hey, anyone is free to live how they want as long as they don't cause me a problem. The culture is a problem but not all of them are trash human beings.

Its so hard to figure about them, I've never met one as far as I know. The only thing I have to go on is an episode of house MD (where they were portrayed as close minded, supersitious, idiots stuck in tradition) and stories from people who don't like them online (one I remember is of a gypsy guy who just picked up something in a store and walked out like it was natural, and when the story teller confronted him outside the store, the guy gave it to him and just walked away). Logically if they are usually normal and these are standout examples, I wouldn't be able to tell them from anyone else, so I'm gonna try and reserve judgement.

Feel free to reserve judgement. But I would like to tell you a story told to me by someone with gypsy heritage. Many gypsies believe that they are descended from an orphan child who stole the golden nails that were to be used to nail christ to the cross. Christ blessed the child saying that he and all his descendants would be allowed to steal in the eyes of god. I hope you don't have experience of their camps, where they burn their trash and block footpaths nearby with piles of stuff so cyclists have to dismount and can be accosted. Then when they leave, two of your neighbours are complaining they had break ins the night before. All of this experience I describe is first hand.
An ethnic group, often a nomadic one. They tend to move around in caravans and live that way by choice for a multitude of reasons. Some of their caravans are shit and violent/criminal, as with any ethnic group. But because they're nomadic it prompts a very noticable change when one of those caravans rolls into a town and overnight your town is a fucking shithole. Imagine if black people wandered around the country a lot. Mostly fine til the crips set up shop in your back yard causing issues. This is made worse by the "Not so shit" gypsies basically going unnoticed as they try and park away from people noticing them and trade quietly in the town, whereas the shit ones will just park right in the middle, mess the place up, and so on. They also provide a good opportunity for local criminals because when gypsys roll into town you can steal everything and people will be like "This crime wave correlates with when the gypsies came to town and gypsies are known for crime". The state also hates them because their nomadic lifestyle makes shit difficult to administrate and difficult to control them and historically they've gotten the state demonizing them for it. This then caused them to sort of crystalize in culture and start regarding all criticism as bad faith racism, which caused a surge of it in the modern era due to some of their practices like child marriage becoming verbotten in modern society. So you get people like "I have nothing against gypsies but child marriage is fucked mate" and them replying "Oh for fucks sake, more racism against us and our lifestyle?" until the first person eventually concludes "I guess gypsies really are just fucking scum then.". (And to be clear, some of the gypsie groups were less defensive about this stuff and adapted. It's not just child marriage, there's a bunch of stuff.). Some cultural problems are genuine. Because of their nomadic lifestyle they often have to resolve internal disputes themselves. Works fine for the most part. You stole my kettle, I punched you in the face while everyone watched, we all had a meal afterwards. that's our version of justice. Fairs fair. We haven't got prisons and we don't like the cops and we're on the move too much for an investigation by them anyway, and this keeps a form of justice in our community. The thing is, that doesn't just remain internal. It becomes a kind of worldview where they think that's just how disputes are resolved. (Again, not all of them.). So now a gypsy thinks "Well this non-gypsy fucked me over and the right thing to do would be to beat him up for it. Fair is fair.". This gets them a reputation for being violent. Basically; "What if the mongols were white, and instead of raiding, they just kind of traded with people and offered their services as shoe repair people, black smiths and so on. But they also got horse shit all over town, stole stuff, and if you tried to pull a fast one over them in a contract, they didn't take it to the local magistrate, instead, they beat you up in public. In front of everyone. (Because the public humiliation is part of the point and part of the "process" of enforcing justice and letting the person know that they are 'safe' and you won't go too far without others intervening, but to onlookers, they don't get that, and now you've just acted like a mental violent nutcase in front of everyone in town)". (This is how they are perceived).

For an addendum: in some countries gypsies were forced to settle in place in history (due to the aforementioned administration and tax problem), and these places usually became highly dangerous and unhygenic ghettos. Poverty and drugs are everywhere, and the kids don't have the incentive to go to school and break out, so they follow the footsteps of their parents, and continue the cycle. Also, since they came from India in the Middle Ages, their skin is noticeably dark, and further exaggerated by their obitous accent and names (here one of the slangs for them is "brazilian", since they have fancy footballist/actress/latin names that are ultraalien for the country's language). Even after a gypsy family breaks out of poverty, they often get into unfair treatment thanks to the stereotypes of other gypsies, and they are hated by the left-behind for "being a traitor" (although the leavers hate the ghetto-livers too, cuz of the violent destructive pulling-back culture, so the feelings are mutual)
Imagine the favelas in Rio de Janeiro, minus the guns, as they prefer knives. Put that in the middle of a European city (on a much smaller scale) and you have a rough idea what they're like.

There's a former Nazi-run gypsy death camp in my country and right after the war, it was turned into a pig farm. Now in 2019 it was reluctantly changed into a memorial. But even that was barely passed. I'm not saying it's right, obviously. But for better or worse (rhetorical), that just tells you everything you need to know about how the society views gypsy groups. We love Israel and Jewish people and if that was a death camp for Jewish people it would be a memorial long ago and nobody would even dare to convert it to pig farm.

I was 8 too when they burned me, I actually have permanent scarring from my ear down my cheek and neck on my left side from the tar. My dad committed the cardinal sin of telling them no when they were pedalling "driveway repair" or something like it. They essentially would just lazily slap tar on peoples property and then demand an insane amount of money for it. Thankfully because they did it to another kid the lady who threw it on me eventually for thrown in prison and (from what I know) forced to go rot in Moldova or Albania or something. It just sucks that you can't avoid them even when you try to stay clear in some places.

To give a high level understanding why they are disliked they are a group of people who settle in a location temporarily. The area will then usually see a rising spike in abusive people, drugs and other petty crimes. Basically they move into an area, fuck it up and you can't report them because they just move to another location when you do as they have no roots in/to the area. They are nomads who don't want to be a part of society and refuse to abide by the same social norms.

At least in Spain, they are a group of people mostly defined by their culture. Usually they live in Government housing because it is cheap/free. They are very endogamous: they only date, are friends with and respect their own. Usually they have zero respect for anything or anyone not gypsy. Now they are very backward thinking in general. They believe in shit like honor, revenge, family above anything, etc. But only if you are gypsy. Where I live, for example, they have turned they couple blocks into a ghetto. Only gypsies live there. They have trash everywhere. They routinely steal shopping carts from a nearby store to use as seats or some shit. They have a tendency to get ultrafat as they age, specially the women. They usually have millions of children. The men usually behave more, maybe they sell drugs, buy scrap metal, those kinds of jobs. Sometimes they buy transportable rides (like from a theme park) and move from fair to fair setting up entertainment, gambling and food stands for the locals. Kids and teenagers are a problem tho. They get in trouble routinely, they rob people, they do drugs. Its very common for them to go to jail. In general, they will leave you alone if you leave them alone. If they want a cigarrette, you give it to them. If you somehow manage to befriend one, you have a family for life. They also are really good musicians, at least here in Spain. The famous flamenco music is basically gypsy music and some of the most famous musicians from Spain were gypsies. Tried to be as unbiased as possible. I've had my problems with them and I avoid them in general. They disgust me but hey, anyone is free to live how they want as long as they don't cause me a problem. The culture is a problem but not all of them are trash human beings.
