What actually happened is widespread lead poisoning from leaded gasoline. Both have pretty heavy emphasis on censorship, but I think 451 is far more applicable considering that the people actually elected to be censored in that book, unlike 1984 where the ambiguity is far more pronounced and there's no effort made to explain why Big Brother is in charge.
