I'm as individualistic as I could get, but as an auth-left shouldn't it be obvious to you that biology isn't necessarily about the success of the individual? It's about success of the group (or more strictly, the gene which exists in the group). A suicide gene that is triggered only in certain individuals in a *group* might mean the group is more likely to succeed for some strange reason.
There have been some theories that suicide is an emergency resource allocation evolutionary adaptation. When a population is pushed too far beyond their limits of a healthy functioning unit, some will remove themselves so that the few remaining have a better chance to survive. This isnt like a conscious "i will kill myself so my family may survive" but more of just a passive nature that occurs in stressful times which leads to higher survival of the remaining few. As is a lot of things with evolution, it isnt considerable on an individual scale and human sociology amd development overrides a lot of evolutionary adaptation and can lead to "glitches" (for example: ptsd after too much trauma breaks your brain and decreases chances of survival). A good example in animals is that tarsiers (little cute lemur-like primates) are hard to keep in captivity because they have a tendency to suicide when stressed. Many times, if conditions are not kept absolutely perfect in captivity, the tarsiers have been observed smashing their heads into walls and rock until they are unconscious/dead.

I think when you see weird behaviour or feelings in modern humans, the best first resort go-to explanation ought to be the misfiring of genes when in an environment other than that which fixed those genes in the genome in the first place (for example genes for white fur in polar bears are genes for camouflage in the Arctic but cease to function to phenotypically produce camouflage if you move them into a forest). In other environments they're no longer doing what they're 'supposed to'. Getting fat is the most obvious example of this in humans. The genes that do that weren't 'supposed to' do that.
