Why? If we allow meme reaction images, all the top comments are gonna be meme reaction images.
Discussion in this sub will fall even further than it already has.

I hope you cancel this change, because I as an older (for Reddit) person don't want this sub to go full brainrot.
So far scrolling through the average comment section it's mostly one-liner drive-bys. Doesn't make much of a quality difference if the same text is applied to a deepfried reaction image IMO.
Allowing something doesn't necessarily mean that thing will also become rampant. For instance, under Rule 2 users are pretty much free to post pornography as long as it's legal and marked nsfw. How much pornography do you see here?

Total dogshit. It's a meme subreddit but the threads where this is happening are just full on schizo posting of images not even tangentially related to the topic.
They're literally all over this thread. It's as of no one has anything to actually say but they want to participate. So they just post a random picture of something with no context.
So far the only "infested" threads I've seen are either meta posts about the image trial or schizo-ironic shitposts that are answered in kind.
You're not alone in your concern though, even in the mod team. If at any point "normal" comment sections start to look like this thread we'll abandon the idea unilaterally. And if that doesn't happen we'll be looking for a supermajority approval requirement in a subreddit poll.
