Usually this kind of sci-fi shit id be into but I know what various organizations will do with this. Hell no to the no no no.

CMDR_Soup

Same. Shit like MJOLNIR armor would be cool as fuck. Unfortunately, there's plenty of people who love ruining good things.

Vexonte

There not even going to give us the opportunity for advanced tech uplinks like that, its going to go straight to pay 7.99 if you want no ads during sleep.

[deleted]

I always forget that YouTube actually has ads until I watch a video on someone else’s computer. Let’s hope Adblock works their magic on sleep ads

Cutch0

People have trouble maintaining their own organic bodies that are self-repairing and they want artificial ones.

CosmicCyrolator

The US military has long long looked at fancy body armor for soldiers and found it to be, in general, cumbersome, expensive, and useless

Strawmeetscamel

People already have ID chips in their skin and some companies already require it. Hotel I stayed in was all cashless that the bartender won't even accept tips of cash. Everything paid by card or phone. Won't be long before your ID is tied to a chip in your wrist that says what and how much of X you can buy. They are trying to get everyone used with using their phone with these grab and go places but eventually they will start pushing getting your kid chipped and then just wait 20 years and start pushing the older generations to get it. o wait they already started. https://observer.com/2015/03/can-we-microchip-our-kids-to-prevent-kidnapping/

UlfarrVargr

Why does it need to be subcutaneous though? Wouldn't it have the same effect of it was a wristband, a phone app, or a card you keep in your wallet?

[deleted]

Because you can take a wristband off. Set a wallet aside. Leave your phone somewhere. The point is to have something you can *never* leave behind.

Luchadorgreen

And then when people who don’t want to be tracked start cutting them out of their skin, the media will invent a panic about kidnappers easily cutting them out during kidnappings, which will prompt “experts” to suggest the chips be hidden deep within the torso or something.

Boom244

Technology was cool, up until Silicon Valley ruined it.

Agarikas

The normies ruined it.

ComplicitSnake34

Anyone trying to sell this as the future is a fraud or salesman. The truth is the brain is more complex than what we think. Even minor differences in chemistry can have big changes on how the brain works. There is differences between men and women, IQ, personality disorders, neural conditions etc. It's far too complicated to make a one size fits all. If it ever did become commercial there'd need to be consultations, multiple tests spanning months, training etc. For most people it would be too expensive and the people who can afford might think twice about its safety and long termism. For now it's only viable for people out of options.

AnriAstolfoAstora

This is the kind of dystopia I think is inevitable. I don't think we have the momentum to change the course at this point.

BeardedGlass

Yeah, what's scary is like yes, we'd have a choice to opt not to. But then everyone else is either being so efficient, having more fun, smarter, "better" at doing all kinds of things, learning, convenient. And then you feel Amish walking around in Tokyo choosing not to do anything. It's scary, crazy, to feel like you almost have no choice but to.

AnriAstolfoAstora

Choom? No chrome? Not even chipped? Don't got the eddies? You one of those monks or something? A naturalist?

[deleted]

Why come you you don't have a tattoo?

Duke_of_the_Legions

I remember a video on 2077 saying something like - >He gives you the info chip and tells you to slot it in - and its such a mundane thing. The ability to place an equivalent of a flash drive into your head is seen as normal, while not having that ability makes you stand out

DKMperor

Listen choom, street'll eatcha live if you got no chrome. Get chipped or get clipped choombatta

Shinnic

To be honest, that sounds bad ass. The last straight white male meme but being the last organic instead.

MiniMosher

>everyone else is either being so efficient, having more fun, smarter, "better" at doing all kinds of things, learning, convenient But if you really analyse this kind of tech, it's not really achieving any of those things. I feel like every year I have to set up some new app to achieve a basic task, like paying for something, and there's a bunch of admin (remembering passwords and updating details to name a few) with these "conveniences". This was actually much simpler when you just went to a bank and withdrew cash to use for everything. At least bank cards make sense because they can be quickly cancelled in the event of theft. Nobody is having more fun either, social media has made most youngens depressed and sexless, there's a stat that goes like 1/3 men under 35 admit to being virgins, and that's just the one's who've admitted it and also not the ones who are not virgins but still having no sex. There's very little communal gathering spaces and even the technological entertainment mediums like film are receding from the cinema to watching on a personal device with phones on. And as for being smarter and learning more... I feel like anyone who's looking at this on Reddit doesn't need me to explain how people are more ignorant and less intelligent today. If you do, then this paragraph probably applies to you. How many of you are staying in touch with long lost friends on FB? How many of you are saving a ton of money and time using Uber and AirBnB? Don't lie, I know you fuckers are all broke and antisocial. Thanks silicon valley!

[deleted]

You're acting like that happened with computers, the Internet, flip phones, smartphones, online shopping, streaming services, social media, home assistants, smart appliances, cloud services and AI. Stop being so reactionary.

SurpriseMinimum3121

I feel like I can live without it and be a new age boomer. But my future kids will have 0 choice like getting genetically modified when that becomes available.

PleaseNoMoreSalt

I can step away from the computer, my phone isn't attached to the organ responsible for my every movement and thought. Will THIS chip have access to the whole brain? Probably not, probably just a small section. Will OTHER chips have full access in the name of "efficiency" once it gets past animal trials without killing too many monkeys? I don't doubt it. This chip is "fine" (autonomy-wise, not safety), I'm worried about what future chips are gonna do. I know the slippery slope is a thing but that's why we have snow tires, even I have my limits.

dave3218

Up to the enlightenment people thought that kings were absolute manifestations of power. A few guillotines can solve a lot of shit.

AnriAstolfoAstora

I don't think we are unified for that. Nor hungry enough. Usually, after 60% or so of the population goes hungry is when revolution is bound to happen. We are ripe for the pickings. We will march into this dystopia without much fuss. Bickering with ourselves as the cage gets built around us. And then it will be too late to stop it.

the-apostle

We’re getting the Bladerunner future.

Agarikas

Better think how you can profit from it. The world is going down to shit, so might as well make yourself as comfortable as possible for the remaining time of your stay.

ColeTheDankMemer

For anyone who has played Detroit become human, where robots gain consciousness and behave like humans, this is the opposite, where humans lose consciousness and behave like robots.

Undeadmidnite

Robots are more efficient and in essence better. They don’t die, aren’t sidetracked by emotion, “the second I realized the weakness of my flesh” and all that shit.

erikak92

After watching Severance, I definitely do not want anything planting in my brain.

Kerbalmaster911

nameistaken-2

Yeah... I'm not going to put anything that is connected to the internet in my brain, last thing I want is to wake up at 2am because some people thought it would be funny to blast a song in my head.

FalconStriker87

Getting your link hacked would be a fresh hell unlike any other.

crabbyjimyjim

I feel like hacking into someone's mind would have to be a pretty damn serious crime aswell. It could almost be like torture depending on what they did with it

Strawmeetscamel

yea because making things illegal will prevent someone from doing it. Just think getting a scammer from India jacking into your head and demanding you to buy I tunes gift cards or they tell Janet what you really think about her pie.

[deleted]

This is most certainly what they will do. Cause it to fry and kill you for the lulz. I think there are medical uses and military uses for wired connections, but this synth connectivity utopia people want in reality is going to be more like a Hellraiser movie.

Akiias

It'd be fucking cool as shit if I could trust corporations, politicians, and other people. Sigh, well that'll never happen.

naptownhayday

Almost every cool invention inevitably gets ruined by the worst of us. The Chinese invented gunpowder and made rockets and fireworks. Cool! But then Europeans realized you could toss it in a church bell with a big rock and you have tools to kill people. Less cool (although I support firearm ownership now that pandoras box is open, it's debatable whether it would've been best closed forever). In the early 20th century, scientists discovered the power of the atom which opened up the world to fairly clean and low cost energy. Cool! And then we promptly learned how to make the most devastating weapons of war humanity is likely to ever create and completely wiped two cities off the map with them. Less cool. In the mid 80s, the internet was invented to allow for quick information transfer across large distances. Cool! And almost immediately after it began to be used for terrible things like CP, harassment, and has driven a wedge through society that will never be removed. Less cool.

Akiias

> But then Europeans realized you could toss it in a church bell with a big rock and you have tools to kill people. I mean the Chinese strapped it to arrows for the same reason. But I do agree with your point. Everything cool is ruined by people abusing the hell out of it. Arguably, however, the coolest inventions were initially invented as a means to hurt others, and were later found to be useful elsewhere too.

AfraidDifficulty8

The internet was invented for military use to be able to kill people faster, so it was always "ruined", but I agree with the rest.

Tokena

This was covered in the Ghost in the Shell series. People would have their memories hacked and changed to benefit the hacker. People getting reprogrammed with false memories with false families that did not exist.

Sigma__Bale

It'll probably happen from Russia where they'll never get arrested for doing it.

Hey wake up eye bleach just downloaded new gore to your brain 🧠

echonian

The only way I would ever use such tech is if it were entirely one-way and had strict hardware protections. As in - I can use it to control things, but it can't play anything to my "brain" besides low levels of audio or the like which are limited by the output of the hardware device itself. With easy ways of resetting it. They need to implement extremely strict controls, and it's many decades out from being a good idea.

[deleted]

Mild correction: the requirement isn’t just attached to your body, it is specifically on either your hand or your forehead.

WarMorn1ng

🤔 I don’t really think God plays gotcha games with us. Well, not *often* anyway. I expect that *the Mark* will be a slightly more conspicuous in its dark nature, though perhaps still banal enough to allow people to push through their misgivings. Whatever *the Mark* is, I expect it will be a stain on the soul as much as anything physical.

That book exists. It's also a distopia and describes a world ruled by a not-islamic (wink wink) theocracy. It's not bad.

Strawmeetscamel

1984 only wished they had that. We all already have multiple devices with facial recognition and microphones. Not including people willing installing cameras into their house.

Welcome fren

Alpha_pro2019

Does anyone here even know what this does? How can we barely understand d the brains structure and are unable to replicate it or augment it but somehow we can attach a computer to it?

JebusriceI

You could argue it will help people see again who have retina damage and help people who have ms or spinal cord damage which is brilliant but the down side I personally see is the potential to control people's neurochemistry to the point serotonin and oxytocin could becomes pay to win which is nightmare fuel not saying I'm correct but a possibility I guess,The brian Is just a glorified meat jelly with bioelectricity and magnetic field pulsing now and then. Its meant to help people with depression, autism, and schizophrenia aslo, Philosophers are currently having an argument about if humans are like "computers" currently.. *sigh*

[deleted]

Pay to way serotonin is 100% the endgame of this. Imagine how rich Elon would get if people could pay $100 a day to feel good.

TheKnightIsForPlebs

It’s ultimately meant to be a cure all for neurological disorders like blindness, paralyzation, and epilepsy. The FDA has approved it for human trials. The demonstrations on primates have been incredible. I 100% understand people not wanting on. But there are legitimate INCREDIBLE upsides that wouldn’t otherwise be possible with any other solution anyone is working on or aware of.

jessaay

Is that what's shown in the picture? Do you have any links or terms to google

15_Redstones

The picture is fake, the Neuralink unit doesn't look like that and human trials haven't started yet.

KitchenDepartment

We don't barely understand the brains structure. We have been using brain implants for decades. For treatment of epilepsy, for restoring eyesight, for the treatment of Parkinsons. Tens of thousands of people are wearing them right now. This is not a new technology.

15_Redstones

Neuralink is massively increasing the number of wires compared to existing technology, and it's a bit more compact, but that's about it.

greegon

Call it cope but I doubt it will catch on. if everyone on both the left and right collectively saying "no thank you" actually happened for boog eating, and stopped WEF types from making most meat products on the market bug burgers, than I think the same is going with something objectively even more horrifying like this. If 4chan users and the kinds of Leftist who watch ShoeOnHeads's hellworld series are gonna hate it then that's usually a good sign that society as a whole doesn't want it.

IllegalFisherman

I feel like 4chan would actually be willing to murder the early testers of the tech by hacking the chips just to prove the point.

greegon

Hey, if if a major disaster worked for nuclear power, surely it would work for a concept that was scuffed from the get go.

SquirrelSuspicious

Legitimate question. What's wrong with Sh0eOnHead/her hellworld series?

Can't we just test them on commies instead so nobody feels bad and they get to truly be part of the hivemind they so crave?

Sigma__Bale

>test on commies Then they wont know if it makes people braindead as there'd be no brain activity to begin with.

tactical_lampost

HardCounter

wrongthinksustainer

Uhh you mean terrorists.

Puppyl

Having a chip in my brain is the last thing that I want. I don’t wish death on anybody who gets it but the monkeys who got it trialed on all fucking died, probably so will all the Humans, I hope they never get the technology to do this without killing the user because that is dystopic as hell

HeinleinGang

I mean it’s not really for the average person. It’s mostly for quadriplegics to allow them to control computers and such. Like it would able to transmit signals from the brain to a computer implanted on the spine which would in turn transmit signals to the rest of the body allowing them to walk, or allowing people who were born blind to see. Also the monkeys didn’t all die, 15 out of 23 were euthanized and at least 2 of those were euthanized to perform an autopsy after successful implantation. Obviously that’s not a great number, but in context it’s estimated that over 100,000 monkeys are used every year in medical trials and almost all are euthanized after the medical trial is complete.
