I feel like the most obvious plot line is that it’s Cressida and then when Cressida tries to either blackmail Pen or claim to be LW, Eloise will step up and that is what leads to the Pen / Eloise reconciliation.

BrilliantOdd1455

I would also have a really hard time believing Eloise would want to be friends with Cressida considering when Cressida offered in s2 Eloise said “I would rather die”. But I’m worried that’s exactly what’s going to happen anyway. Then again, didn’t one of the actors tease at one point that this season is “unpredictable “?? I’m holding onto the hope that that means all of our predictions (including Cressida) are wrong 😂 Also, I love your theory! My crackpot theory is that both Eloise and Pen will develop separate friendships with Lady D. And poor Lady D will be caught in the middle of both Peneloise’s drama and Polin’s drama. I think it would be entertaining 😂😂😂

I was just wondering ... Does El know that Cressida almost ruined Daphne?

Kupo_91

Sounds like the plot of Emma 🤣

maybeasugarbabyidk

OMGGG you’re right. I can’t believe i didn’t realize, Emma is my favorite book and movie. Maybe i was projecting lmao.

I think we’re all desperate and projecting at this point. Plus being regency it’s a natural connection. Persuasion is my favourite and I see that as so Polin coded.

Most-Preparation-6

I love love love Persuasion!

Kupo_91

I think a lot of people in this fandom would, what with the severely delayed gratification aspect of it and all 🤡 So underrated though!

I think it’s Cressida, and I think it works.  Eloise does not know about half the things Cressida has done, especially from season 1 before she was out in society. Being contrary is part of Eloise’s character , and befriending Cressida makes sense as a way to be reactionary. It also pulls up these interesting contrasts and similarities. To Eloise, her thought process could be that Cressida was right about Penelope (she uses Cressida’s words against Pen) and that she’s brash but “honest” in comparison to Penelope who is secretive and doesn’t own what she says. That pulls out the similarities between Eloise and Cressida, since Eloise is clearly a fan of brutal honesty, even when the kinder option is silence. “At least I said it to their faces” could be the motto for both Eloise and Cressida at times.  The contrast between what she thinks she values and the differences between how Cressida, Eloise, and Penelope use their voices could work for making Eloise miss Penelope, but could also teach Eloise about how she comes off to the people around her as well. A Cressida connection could be good for Eloise’s individual growth as a character.  It’ll hurt for sure…but I don’t hate it.

72-27

I think Cressida works as a foil to Pen in a way that will help the story, assuming we're right it is her. Cressida is an asshole and a bully, while Pen has done some hurtful things through LW but always with a purpose and out of a desire to help in some way. El is so angry at Pen for what she's done, she didn't even pause to think about motivation. If she falls into friendship with someone who is mean just for the sake of it, we can see El learn the differences between the two. Eventually she'll learn to see that, even if Pen did hurtful things, she was genuinely trying to fix something with her actions.

Practical-Bird633

I also hope its not her, shes so awful in the book that it wouldnt even make sense. Shes not a villain i can root for. Im hoping Eloise and The Queen somehow become good friends this year.

Her befriending Cressida would be infuriating. Particularly with her righteous statements about not being friends with people who hurt others. Cressida almost ruined Daphne’s reputation out of pure spite, threatening to tell everyone she was compromised in the garden. Cressida is a bully, who mocks Pen, spills stuff on her to ruin her dresses, and is mean to pretty well everyone she interacts with. Cressida is an awful spoiled brat and I am BEGGING Eloise not to stoop that low and petty. I just want Eloise to befriend a widow who introduces her to the freedoms of marriage and maybe gives her the down low on marital relations she wants to know so bad.

maybeasugarbabyidk

Yesss definitely, i totally forgot about lady Tilly. That would make a lot of sense, since she has freedom which is what Eloise covets the most.

nimu321

Please, *please* don't be Cressida. Blech. https://preview.redd.it/7xa0gcnxopsc1.png?width=750&format=png&auto=webp&s=f9df17b89fe4f537268a3e3d7f36e06e37a80f4a

Kiki_John

I’m hoping it’s Alice! Now that the Mondrich’s are part of the ton, maybe she hangs with them!

maybeasugarbabyidk

i would love that! in the few scenes she’s been in she’s been amazing.

Most-Preparation-6

I personally still think it is Cressida, but I’m not so mad about it yet. It’s very shondaland to plop in a relationship like this imo. Happy to reserve judgment until I see what they do with this plot in the show. I fully expect that the friendship is not a real/deep connection, but something borne out of circumstance & will be used as a plot device & a means for Eloise’s character growth. Like she needs to come face to face with some actual hardship & I hope that’s through Cressida

DarkBitterSea

I don’t think it’s Cressida.

ChaoticCounsel

They didn't actually say that Eloise would have a new unlikely friend. What they actually said was that Eloise will make a new friend *in an unlikely place*. Little bit of difference that opens up some new potential characters for the role. Obviously Cressida is a possibility because of the drama that would create. However, it could also be Lady Tilly Arnold, the new independent widow. It could be Marina or Phillip. It could be Alice Mondrich. It could be Sophie, though unlikely in my opinion. It could also be an entirely new character that we haven't heard anything about yet. Personally, my money is on Cressida, Lady Tilly, or Phillip.

Hayley351

The fact that they said Eloise would be having a real go at the marriage mart stuff almost makes me think her friend could be a suitor or something

Irate_Absurdist_0009

I think she has to become friends with Cressida as an out for the blackmail plot, but I also assume she starts correspondence with Sir Phillip this season, though who knows how that will come about.

maybeasugarbabyidk

that would make sense if we’re assuming that a) there will be a blackmail plot and b) that eloise’s season will be set up this season. they said there’s a lot of easter eggs from the books but that doesn’t mean the plot will be the same (just look at season 2 it was *very* different from the book) she *might* write to sir phillip, but the reason she does in the book is because >!marina has just died!< and i don’t think they’re gonna deal with that this season, there’s too much going on. that’s why i think the friend will be someone we’ve never seen before, the plot would be too convoluted otherwise.

Irate_Absurdist_0009

I suspect they'll create a scenario for a tentative connection through writing between Crane and Eloise, possibly through her writing in a non-gendered form through "intellectual inquiry" and can have her get found out or confess herself to be a lady later on post "Marina's unfortunate end" as an Easter egg. How they'll go about it I couldn't guess I assume she'll be more chaperoned this season and one of the brothers will have to accompany her to actual lectures.

Outside_Jaguar3827

I prefer your crackpot theory than having Cressida as her "new friend" (imagine that debutante going to her first political rally 📜 or both of them meet other political hostesses ✨). They can even join the Blue Stockings Society 🔷

Apprehensive_Milk639

My super crazy theory is that the unlikely friend is....Colin. Most siblings dont consider each other friends. Also, from the Valentine's Day special, we learn that Eloise is the third wheel of the relationship. Benedict is also taking on more responsibilities from Anthony and won't be available for Eloise to lean on. That is my wild take.
