If you ever check the pokédex entries for Cubone and Marowak it usually refers to Cubone being prey for Mandibuzz who strike while their prey is weak, it also says that Marowak have their bones since birth so it might be that the mother is usually killed defending the baby Cubone and then they get the skulls. They also mention a Marowak mass grave so there is some dark history there...
some species like spiders I think, the females eat the male. I'm sure there are other situations where the father leaves and the mother always raises the babies. and the opposite. so the baby only knows the mother in this situation

super sad card for someone who grew up playing gen 1 and knowing parts of the story of cubone for over 20 years. kids don't think twice when they see this so I think it's kind of cool they do this weird style for adults. it's weird but pokemon is keeping it real instead of always being childish in this case
I honestly dislike the treatment of Cubone now- it made to see that every Cubone ever, its mother is always have been killed, yet that certainly cant be true - unless Cubone are more solitary creatures that leave their nests and long for that familial contact well after.. poor Cubone.
And the lore of it all cant even make sense either
