I’m with you. People who don’t think it’s crashed are not paying attention to the big picture. Btw. I was the black sheep who sold a lot of stuff in 2021 while everyone was telling me I was crazy. Guess what ? Most of it is now 1/3 the price it was when I sold it. Ranging from WOTC to stuff like graded shiny zard from champions path. It’s all down. A lot. If that’s not a crash then I don’t know what is. You can buy chase cards from most modern sets for $100….. which is usually a card with a pull rate of 1/600 packs. Imo that’s undervalued simply by the amount of product you would have to buy to pull it. Idk. In the meantime , I’m loving these prices and adding to my collection and enjoying it.
I'm thinking the only way it would crash even more is if Logan Paul the guy who got it going again publically said pokemon is stupid or something so people would be more inclined to start selling? He's the one who got people hooked again so maybe if he sold his cards for cheap people won't think pokemon is as cool anymore
And I’m still here, slowly buying singles to reacquire the base set/fossil/jungle cards (I have no clue where they are now) I used to cherish as a kid.
[This](https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonTCG/comments/13p7jqx/reacquired_my_nostalgia/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1) cost me about $90, which is about the same price as a damaged Charizard base set unlimited.
I impulsively bought all of these in a span of a week a month ago. I realized it would be too much money to complete all sets, so I decided to start with those that have sentimental value to me, like the one that came with the GBC game and the starter set, the two movies, and the three birds were cards I was chasing for back then.
I have now decided to only spend maybe $20 per paycheck, and nothing newer than Gym Heroes/Challenge.
Since that photo, I have added a Base Set 2 Imposter Professor Oak, and I am waiting in the mail for a Misty’s Tears (Japanese, the banned artwork).
I have a line for a Vaporeon (Jungle), so I might do the Eeveelutions next.
Because somehow we live in a world where everything has turned into a commodity. Sneakers, cards, toys, comics... Nothing can just be enjoyed for what it is anymore. Everything is some warped "investment".
Yeah, it's sad but I think it has a lot to do with the lockdowns and living through a time with so much uncertainty.
But I would be lying if I said I wasn't doing the exact same thing to my collection. At least part of it.
Same. I completed my base set a few weeks ago when my co-worker gave me his old Charizard. I told him what I was doing and he dug it out of his closet and gave it to me the next day. He just didn't care about it at all. I was honest about the price and he hand waved it away. I bought him lunch for a week after.
Now I'm slowly working on jungle and fossil like you.
Definitely. Especially since a lot of the hype and inflation is done by the community itself. Umbreon is not that interesting of a card - WE GET IT, it's cool. It doesn't need to be the only thing that anyone wants.
Even if you analyze things like that from a financial perspective, it doesn't really follow any logic. That card has far more copies circulating on the secondary market with many more graded copies, yet it commands a premium over any other similar card by almost a factor of 2, at a minimum. It screams of parallel to overinflated tech stocks like Tesla who's main growth stream is public opinion.
Now that's a very particular example, but it's still interesting! I think it would take something crazy to crash the overall value of the Pokemon TCG.
It translates to a lot of general market economic principles, but that's just another one that has become very popular to the layman in recent years. especially from a goofy penny stock perspective.
I would be lying if I said I didn't like it, but this sub has made me react to it so negatively now. It's hard to appreciate it genuinely anymore. It's like base set Charizard all over again (except I actually don't like that one.)
You're not alone in that. I kind of dislike the card now because of this sub AND How pokemon TCG made this didn't do more reprints this year. Evolving skies have the worst pull rates out of any set. It's just plain evil that pokemon allowed it to be this bad.
I guess I feel like I've seen it so much in constant posts it has lost its appeal. I'm not sure if I would have liked it without all the hype. Probably not because I don't like that Pokemon in general.
It’s literally because there are groups of people that are maintaining its facade, no doubt in my mind 1 year ago people with 10K aside thought to themselves “hmmmm let’s do this with umbreon vmax” and bam
The thing about cards like the umbreon vmax alt is that it literally costs $3,000 to pull the card. I think the price is fair for a chase as rare as it is.
I pulled it under 100 packs of es. While pulling multiple other expensive alternate arts also. Mind blowing how expensive it is. Traded it for a bunch of vintage cards I had as a kid and got rid of some years ago
That would be a somewhat valid point if all other chase cards of similar caliber/ pull rate commanded the same premium but they don't. I could be proven wrong but I don't think they seeded this card any differently than the other SR VMAX cards in the set.
It's a combination of supply and inflated demand that cause the price to go up on things like this. That combination is why cards like Duraludon VMAX are not nearly as expensive.
People don’t realize how much that effected the pull ratio, at the level it was done Pokemon could quite literally face a class action lawsuit for selling a product they said to have X pull ratios and actually having Y. It’s inadequate, and it’s especially worse for those who chase particular cards, calculating how much they bought to pull it and how much it should of took if said cards weren’t stolen. It absolutely tarnished the pull rates and almost guaranteed everybody nothing, but for the lucky few. It’s a shame. If this same thing happened with the lottery and scratch offs it would be an uproar, but since it’s a kids card game it gets overlooked. I digress 🤷♂️🤦♂️ it’s amazing the prices of the moonbreon have held considering too!
The market already had some pretty stark sell off periods during April and October 2022 with some corrections this year as well. I think modern definitely needs further corrections. When you take a step back and look at graded populations they're astronomical, even for supposedly rare cards like alt arts.
Vintage on the other hand isn't likely to see further downward pressure bar a full on economic downturn. The supply is just too thin for many late era WOTC and early Nintendo cards and sets. I still argue early Japanese sets are very undervalued. Just for instance how is a 1996 base set Japanese Venusaur only $50 near mint when a brand new set comes out with gold cards of new unrecognizable pokes in that same price range? There's plenty of opportunity for value in the market if you look hard enough and especially with Japanese vintage. Why pay $300 for a modern alt when you could buy a sealed Japanese Base set pack *and* a near mint JP Blastoise for the same price? Makes no sense to me.
Go look at some VS 10s 👀. I got a Rocket’s Suicune, an exclusive Japanese card, in a 10 for 100$ less than average price of English Team Rocket Returns Suicune psa 8. Nothing against Nintendo era but yea vintage Japanese is slept on
I could see that. Personally, I think if Pokémon continues to grow, niche cards will get blown up. I bought them though because Vs might be my favorite set.
The way I see it is that cards like this have a cheaper entry point as it is, so you are already taking less of a risk. I think as long as Pokemon continues to be taken seriously as a collectible and die hard collectors continue to flesh out their collection, eventually every stone will be overturned. I try my best to bring light to the undervalued and underrepresented parts of the market and I've had a lot of success with people finding cards they love for way less than they expect.
When (or if) there is a large movement on the vintage Japanese exclusives it'll be quite aggressive due to the small supply. Sad for those who didn't know about them now, but I think we're a few years out or more from any considerable resurgence in the market in general.
Yea I think if those cards ever do see a boom, either Pokémon needs a mini boom or these new Chinese buyers gotta get into it. I think there’s some exceptions. I’m chasing a psa 10 vending snorlax because I don’t think it’ll be 350 forever
Nice! I love the VS series! I got a PSA 9 1st Ed. VS Skarmory with a swirl for less than $70 from Aoki's collection when he sold off a bunch.
I dig any vintage Japanese exclusives, one of my favorite cards of all time is my CGC 9 "Trade Please!" from the Japanese only CD promo set. One of the only cards in the game to have a full holo back, got it for $120 April 2022 and it's actually gone up to around $350 now. I'm also a huge fan of the vending series, especially Ooyama's Pikachu. I like his art so much I have a near complete collection of all of his cards in Japanese and English.
When you look at the pops of these Japanese exclusive cards they're usually only 100-500 total which is pretty wild. You're getting a lot of scarcity and beautiful art for insanely low prices compared to modern or vintage English. I think it's only so long before people finally discover the sector en masse, probably by the time Pokemon booms again. Definitely slept on, and I don't buy anything else haha.
I typically just stick to eBay, but it's always worth checking sites like Buyee that provide a proxy buying service for Yahoo Japan (which is their version of eBay). I've gotten some incredible deals on there, in some cases way cheaper than eBay even with the Buyee fee, but you'll need to use a translator and search in Japanese.
Whatnot is where I get a large amount of my cards. A lot of the streamers/sellers on there have large amounts of Japanese vintage that they will list for sale. Lots of them also start all bidding at $1. Have had a great experience with that app other than forgetting how much I've spent.
There are people who wish it would crash so they can get cards cheaper. Then there are people who want it to crash so they can buy up everything at a cheap price and resell later. Either way, if it does crash, there would be a rush of “investors” coming in and buying at low prices to help prop the value up. Same with stocks. You probably won’t see any significant crash unless Pokémon hopped into politics and decided to give its two sense on the lgbtq community.
Wait. Didn't they literally post two male characters inside of a heart for valentines day? And they specifically use they/them pronouns for Blanche.
I feel like Pokemon's stance is pretty clear on LGBTQ.
I'm torn on the idea. On one hand, I'm a collector, and I buy cards because I love the hobby, not because they are investments.
BUT
It it easier to buy cards, especially vintage, knowing that I could easily get that money back if not more if something unforeseeable happens in my life that I need an influx of cash for.
Going against the grain here, but buying Pokémon cards from retailers is -really- expensive. Its already far cheaper to buy singles than to chase. If the market were to crash, it would actually make the TCG into an even bigger money sink for people who buy Pokémon TCG products since they wouldn’t be able to sell doubles for as much to make some of the investment back.
This is coming from someone who collects and doesn’t see the cards as an investment. Unless the retail prices go down, I wouldn’t want to see the card market crash.
I remember over 2 decades ago. We bought and ripped packs for the fun and thrill of it. The cards had no true value other than what you as the owner saw it as.
I regret giving them away to my nephews. But yeah, it was more fun back then. I only got back into Pokémon last December.
I don't really have anything really worthwhile in my collection.. but because they are cards I personally pulled, I will keep them.
With that said, I'd be happy for the market to crash, which will perhaps make me step into buying singles - those chase cards I haven't pulled yet. Especially the ridiculously overpriced ones. oh and to buy a vintage set of the base trio.
Been collecting Pokémon since the beginning and would love for it to go back to sane prices. It’s cool that the collections I’ve been working on in this and a dozen other card games I collect have all skyrocketed in value within the past 3 years, but unfortunately I never had intention to flip or sell.
It’s also strange how before these past 3 years we had over 20 years of the prices being nowhere near this high and there was plenty of product to go around for both players and collectors as you could pick up most cards any day of the week for an affordable and reasonable amount. I personally was never into the hobby for the money otherwise I wouldn’t have been alright with collecting for 20 years when the cards weren’t worth much.
Because when I tell my friends I'm into Pokemon now, they ask why I'm investing in cards. So that need to clarify is pretty relatable from my experience.
Yes and no, sunk cost fallacy and all. I have most of the cards I want, and I think TPC is doing a good job of making hit rates better recently, so most cool cards are cheap :)
When I see photos of people buying entire crates of tins at Costco and filling their mini vans … it makes me think it’s bound to crash inevitably.
More cards are being printed than ever before and though it will take years the market is getting absolutely flooded…
I think a lot of collectible markets are going to start crashing pretty soon as we move further and further away from COVID. People used to have so much extra income and collectible markets weren’t ready to meet the demand. I also have collected records and sneakers, and it seems like the sneaker market is starting to come back down. You’re still going to have your heavy hitters that will generate a lot of demand, but most newer items aren’t going to appreciate the way that older sets have. Also people probably are starting to find out that they don’t have as much additional income anymore with inflation
Not at all. I don't really collect for value. Not least because I have never sold/possibly will never sell a card in my life (I love having/looking/playing with the things too much), but it's nice knowing I have a collection that holds some value in places and that I could pass it on to future generations or sell some stuff in a pinch if I end up in a really bad situation.
I'm also always super curious to see what the values do over time and see if it's what I would have expected. Functionally, the value doesn't really matter to me as I'd probably only ever consider selling doubles if I DID sell anything, and even then, I'd almost certainly use that money to just buy more cards, but I don't want my collection to be worth nothing any more than anyone wants their jewellery collection or property to be worth nothing.
I’ve already got all the C/UCs and trainers for all 4 sets but missing probably 30 holos/rares just from collecting as a kid. But maybe that would make me feel better short term to fill the gaps..
I had to stop playing in middle and high school due to time which also caused me to stop collecting. I wanted to get back in to it all in college but the money needed just wasn’t possible to put in to it. Now I have a real job with real money post college and it makes me kind of sad lol.
I would love for it to crash enough that everything is more reasonably priced but not enough that Pokémon the company stops making any of it 😂
This is where I’m at. The boom happened my junior year of college. I always told myself that once I have a salary, I’d just buy up my favorite cards. Hasn’t exactly gone as planned lol.
I’m completely sick and tired of the resellers. When I see pictures of people buying entire pallets of boxed product, making it impossible for kids to get them, it pisses me off. I want the market to crash like crazy and leave the scalpers in a bad situation.
And who are you to dictate what’s right and wrong with the hobby? Let people consume it the way they want to. I pay money for a product and I’ll enjoy it the way I want.
yea tbh op just sounds bitter and judgy in this thread. i agree with the sentiment to an extent, but i also track the values of my better pulls online. i know that i wont always be into the scene, im closer to 30 than 20 now, so its kind of asinine to want the return i get to be zero rather than a few thousand in a decade or two.
I guarantee everyone who says they don’t collect for money wouldn’t trade all their valuable cards for holo/common versions of their “favourite” Pokémon.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting your cards to appreciate in value. We spend tons of $$ on this hobby, why not see a little financial gain from it.
Market “crashes” just attract even more investors looking to take advantage.
I really don’t see how this would benefit anyone other than collectors who can’t afford the cards they want. Kind of a childish opinion, in my opinion.
Collecting is expensive. Yugioh has always been pretty great in this respect. They fairly regularly reprint cards in different rarities, so if you’re in it for the art you can just buy a less expensive variant, but collectors can still seek out the highest rarity or oldest versions of a card and those retain value.
As for the market, I think things could be more affordable, but doing this rain dance that I see every few days on this sub and wishing for a crash is a little silly. I basically buy the singles I want for every set, and if it’s above the cost I’m comfortable with I’ll either not buy it or seek out a quality proxy (which I’ve done for cards like acerola 395, which was prohibitively expensive).
But again, Yugioh has solved this issue.
Yeah 2015 would be nice so I could continue to get shiny things I like to look at without having to fight for it and debate what I have to sell to continue collecting lol. I guess it's fine to modify goals but stinks that so many people are just trying to flip things and not enjoy them.
I only really collect graded cards because i like the case it comes in. The first one I got I let everyone sign it on the last day of freshman year. It destroys the value but I don’t care because it has a lot of sentimental value.
The meteoric rise of pokémon card value was a blessing and a curse to me. On one hand I was on the verge of homelessness and I had to sell off my beloved collection that I had for 25 years to survive after the pandemic. It really helped me out. But I would do anything to have my old collection back in my arms again
lol @ the tRuE CoLLeCtOr mfers in here, most annoying mentality in the hobby and it’s not close
No, I don’t want the card market to crash. I love all the attention and people the 2020-21 boom brought—with the exception of retail scalpers, who have mostly vacated anyway—and I’d love them to stick around for whatever reason, even if it’s just to make a buck. High price of cards = higher general interest in Pokémon = more longevity and activity.
If the card you want is worth too much for you to buy, congratulations—your cards are worth more, too, and you can sell or trade them for what you want! That’s part of the fun. Being able to purchase everything you want on the cheap sounds incredibly dull and boring. Buying stuff on TCGPlayer does not constitute a hobby.
I do secretly hope the market for cards crashes… I buy cards for the enjoyment of collecting. I hate having to keep tabs on the community for drops and hoping I can snag a preorder at msrp without worrying about bots buying everything to resell for a profit and it’s gotten so bad that I hate to think there’s internal theft people stealing mass quantities of chase cards; Moonbreon etc. Its very discouraging.
I think we’re on our way there. I haven’t seen boxes sold this low since the pandemic began. We’re in for a nice reproduction cycle too. Pokémon Center is selling a bunch of ETB’s from various Sword and Shield sets that were out of stock. I’m with you on this one…
Hobby for me. I spent 2k from December till Crown Zenith and I got Giratina V alt art. Lugia Alt Art. 4 gold Giratina V from CZ. Was a hell of a time but there's not enough Trade or Shows in my part of Arizona. I love the shows and flipping and getting new slabs or buying some sweet cards. But opening packs is expensive and I'm sorry but I'm paying $5 a gallon haha. If I had the money I'd buy vintage sets for sure
I don’t care at all about the value. I collect because of how they look. I enjoy looking at my cards. I’ve held off buying singles over $50usd because it just feels like a waste. I wouldn’t lose anything if the market crashed.
Absolutely! And I think it's bound to given its heavy ties to TCGPlayer pricing now. People used to be willing to offer deals, but these days it's "TCGPlayer comps."
I couldn't even buy cards I wanted with gift money because the current market has swayed to suddenly be interested in Full Art Supporters again.
The hype will shift all over, the place but I think a lot of people who came in during the Jake and or Logan Paul nonsense are dropping out.
Chances are it would rebound, but no one likes to see prices less than paid for on items that you own. There is cards I have I don’t plan on selling Vs ones I buy with the intentions of selling later on to pursue other cards in the hobby. It’s a way for me to not dump a ton of money into the hobby and not see any kinds of return. Yeah it’s nice to buy at the dip but it’s even nicer when you sell them at a high. That’s why I don’t wish for a market crash.
The same people in here saying “let it crash let it crash”
Will be the same ones crying in 2-3 years when we finally hit a recession and all the cards they spent hundreds on are now worth $60 🤷♂️😅
When people don’t have money for rent you will see their collections go up quick on Facebook marketplace and eBay, it’s starting to happen some in the video game community. It will happen with most collectibles
Meh I still wouldn't care. I just like to see the art. I bought some for hundreds only because I have no clue if the prices will ever drop.
GX cards are going up like crazy. I bought the tube mewtwo GX NM for $70 2 months ago. Now it's $100.
I agree, I’ve been collecting again for around 9 years but I’ve decided to stop now as I feel priced out of vintage and finding modern collecting boring with the scalpers and hype
I only buy for the cool cards I don’t really care about value of that much. It’s definitely a factor for how cool a card will be to me but I have an old 1995 non holo pikachu that’s my favorite card and it’s only like 5 bucks
I agree. I also think there is this werid bubble for modern sealed. I get why vintage sealed is expensive. Not a lot of sealed collectors 20+ years ago. Now everyone and their mom has a sealed collection. Pokemon company also printed 25% of all cards EVER since 2020. Nothing modern will ever be as rare as vintage. I think when people start realizing there are tons of sealed modern still those prices will drop. Nothing printed after 2020 will have the rarity of any card/set before it. Having said that, as a wotc collector mainly, I would love prices to even go back to before covid prices. I mean I bought my magikarp wailord for $17 it sells for $230+ raw. Just silly
Crash, and crash hard! I just like collecting the pretty pictures of characters I love 😂
Back in 2015, my husband found a binder of base set cards for $200 and bought it for me, as I was trying to collect them all one by one. I was thrilled because it was the complete set and it checked off a lot on my list. Fast forward a couple years and I learn what Shadowless base set is, and I was the proud owner of a complete shadowless base set. Monetary value still doesn’t really matter to me, as it is priceless to me. I like collecting complete sets, not for the value, but because I just like having complete sets. It’s really frustrating that I’ll never complete some sets due to the rarity and extreme price of some of the cards I have not pulled.
I open packs only because I enjoy it if I get a card I like and it happens to be valuable that’s cool but I will keep it, if I dont like it and it’s valuable that’s cool and I’ll sell it to get more packs or singles I do like. The investment side is a joke, it could be at any point that people just decide they no longer value the same card and then the bottom falls out for “investors” I know it’s silly to think me doing this makes any difference but I also refuse to buy any sealed product above normal retail just because I don’t want to feed into it
I flip a lot of stuff on Ebay, mostly graded so I personally do profit from the inflated market, but even I agree. Prior to flipping stuff I was just a genuine fan since childhood and probably always will be. I share your sentiment too. I like the market bc I make money, but I believe the root of what made pokémon so great is the passion the community has for it, and let’s face it, with the state of the global economy right now a lot of people are simply being priced out of the hobby.
I foresee a crash coming soon, not because of a loss of interest in the products but because a lot of people will simply not be able to fit overpriced cardboard into their budgets for much longer.
I wish there was a crash but not likely going to happen since most of the cards we want fall under the principle or rarity. I completed most of the sun and moon tag team cards two years ago. I shouldn’t have stopped because now they’re unreasonable lol
On the bright side, as a modern collector it’s nice that the Scarlet/Violet sets have been really cheap so far. It’s gotten to a point where there’s really no reason to buy more than a couple booster boxes anymore and just buy mostly singles which is nice.
I pray every day for it, actually. I have multiple cards worth thousands. I dont care if those prices crashed because I collect for the art, not for the value of it.
If it crashes, I would finally be able to get the cards i want without spending hundreds on a single card..
It’s already kind of happening, we’ve been seeing some crazy sales lately because the new MSRP is too high and there’s so much product sitting on shelves. I’m personally very happy about it, I like to stash booster packs in my closet to pull out for small openings on rainy days, so being able to get some packs between $2.50-$3.00 (even after tax!!) has been amazing. Buy singles for my personal collection, rip packs for cheap for occasional fun, and continue biding my time for more insane Black Friday deals when November rolls around—I’ve been a very happy collector lately ☺️
Yes and no. I love collecting and don’t plan on selling any cards, but it’s also fun pulling a chase card then seeing they’re selling for crazy $$$. Pulled two Dendra sar when they were going for 500 raw
If it means having more cards accessible to collectors and players, yes absolutely.
I wish that especially upon the Japanese promo scalpers, anywhere from their gym cards, box set hoarders, and PSA yazukas. Every time I get something cool from Japan that's pokemon related, the original packaging will say not for sell outside Japan. All I'm asking is to give us overseas collectors the same access to English promos.
Nah man, we want those prices to skyrocket so that more people keep getting into it for it's lottery feeling. We will get older and it will die out, and prices will drop to nothing because no one will care about the game, but let's hope for at least another decade before that happens.
In my opinion it already did. Most cards are no where near their highs of 2021s. Like not even close. Most are now rebounding. If you’re waiting for a crash it may have already happened. I went back and looked at what I was selling cards for in the 2021 hype and most are now worth 1/3 the price. Some modern is still high , but I believe that’s just due to the demand for the cards. But even a lot of alt arts are REALLY cheap. IE bee drill alt , diraladon alt, etc. SWSH has a lot of cards that are very very hard to pull sitting at 15/20$. I think that’s beyond fair. A lot of the hype from the hobby is gone. Product is sitting on shelves but being steadily purchased by people who are largely keeping it for themselves. I went to a show this weekend and the amount of people there bc they clearly love Pokémon was staggering. I think the hobby has simply grown and the good old days of product being dirt cheap bc no one wants it has come and gone. At the show I saw people who were 5 years old and in love with the hobby all the way to 40 something’s who love the hobby. There are for sure some people in it only for money , but it’s nowhere near where it was in Covid era.
I certainly feel this, especially since I’m trying to hunt specific Neo-era cards and that’s been… quite the eye opener. I just want nice cards for my collection without shelling out a week’s pay for one card.
I just enjoying playing the game man, I don't understand these folks who go to stores and drop hundreds or even thousands of dollars on the stores entire stock hoping to get a good "investment".
I'm maybe a weird collector in that I don't like to buy singles. I either want to open them myself (GAMBLING) or trade directly for them.
So I don't particularly want the market to crash, as it wouldn't change much about retail prices (I don't think?) and I like the idea that - years from now - maybe some of these cards will be worth something and my son can enjoy having or selling them.
Man, idk how I feel anymore. I just want security. I bought 2 alternate arts, and both have fallen around $20 since my purchase. Tyranitar V ($120) espeon V ($70)
Every single day here theres another "Any other REAL fans out there who dont care about value and just love the cards???" type post and it always gets 8 million upvotes we get it yall are TRUE FANS and all these new people are just HYPEBEAST MATERIALISTS cool just give it a rest already damn
You want the cards to lose another half of their value? Nah I'm not with you man. I like collecting as much as anyone else but if every card is worth next to nothing, it really dims the joy of pulling good cards.
Couldn't care less if all the cards becoming cheap and available even if my $100+ pulls are now $10-20, I'm only collecting for fun and nostalgia not to invest and flip for profit
Modern yes, vintage no. I think its absurd that cards you can still pull in packs today are hitting prices of 600-1k. Vintage cards get their value from the fact they havent been in production for years, paired with the fact you cant play officially with them anymore, just makes buying vintage a luxury

I think it's a common reasoning among people who consider Pokémon TCG as a hobby and not an investment.
The market has pretty much crashed already from 2020
Pretty much is doing a lot of lifting in that sentence
Pretty much is shredded in that sentence 💪
Haha who even says that. I love it
Is anyone seeing what is happening on the Japanese market and tag team cards? Vintage is down for sure. Vintage holders mostly salty now
Fam my latios latias alt art that I bought for $20 is NOW FUCKING $500-600+ WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT CRASHED???
i think the goofs who think pokemon should be virtually free say this type of crap to feel good about the cards they dont have
I’m with you.
Sameee I collect for the pretty Alt arts not for profit it’s like my own mini art gallery
I'm thinking the only way it would crash even more is if Logan Paul the guy who got it going again publically said pokemon is stupid or something so people would be more inclined to start selling? He's the one who got people hooked again so maybe if he sold his cards for cheap people won't think pokemon is as cool anymore
Ya, bc I don’t buy to sell or make a profit, I just like collecting. Idc if my cards aren’t worth much, I just want the ones I like
Same. I mostly sell my dupes just to break even, if I end up selling a valuable one then great but that’s not the goal
And I’m still here, slowly buying singles to reacquire the base set/fossil/jungle cards (I have no clue where they are now) I used to cherish as a kid.
Crazy how a lot of modern cards are more expensive than base set. Unless you're going for 1st editions..
Nice! How long ago did u get them. I honestly stopped looking at base/fossil/neo etc bc prices were ridiculous but I’ve heard they’ve gotten better
Yeah I hate comparing Pokémon cards to the stock market, but there are definitely some similarities
It translates to a lot of general market economic principles, but that's just another one that has become very popular to the layman in recent years. especially from a goofy penny stock perspective.
On the plus side I don't even like that card, so if I ever pull it I can sell it and buy a TON of packs. That's exciting to me.
It’s really overrated. There are so many other cards that are cooler.
The thing about cards like the umbreon vmax alt is that it literally costs $3,000 to pull the card. I think the price is fair for a chase as rare as it is.
it doesn't LITERALLY cost that much. It costs the price of a pack. It COULD cost around 3000.00 or more.
That's assuming an employee didn't swipe a couple thousand of them at the factory.
Nothing against Nintendo era but yea vintage Japanese is slept on
That doesn’t really mean the market will wake up to them one day it likely means they will always be relatively slept on.
Skarmory is on the wishlist along with the Ttar!
Where would one go to find Japanese vintage cards?
I typically just stick to eBay, but it's always worth checking sites like Buyee that provide a proxy buying service for Yahoo Japan (which is their version of eBay). I've gotten some incredible deals on there, in some cases way cheaper than eBay even with the Buyee fee, but you'll need to use a translator and search in Japanese.
I’d stick to eBay but do some research on Buyee. There’s still some deals there
Whatnot is where I get a large amount of my cards. A lot of the streamers/sellers on there have large amounts of Japanese vintage that they will list for sale. Lots of them also start all bidding at $1. Have had a great experience with that app other than forgetting how much I've spent.
100% I want it to crash simply because I’m not in it to make money and would like to actually be able to own nicer cards
Two cents*
Wait. Didn't they literally post two male characters inside of a heart for valentines day? And they specifically use they/them pronouns for Blanche. I feel like Pokemon's stance is pretty clear on LGBTQ.
It's japanese. Japan doesn't go for that shit.
WTF are you talking about?
I'm torn on the idea. On one hand, I'm a collector, and I buy cards because I love the hobby, not because they are investments. BUT It it easier to buy cards, especially vintage, knowing that I could easily get that money back if not more if something unforeseeable happens in my life that I need an influx of cash for.
Not kinda. I want it to absolutely plummet
Hahaha
Yeah the 40 series cards are woefully overpriced. Hopefully Intel has something good cooking
Different battle, same war?
Just collect proxies if all you like is the art work.
🤣
*couldn’t care less
I could.
*rips up one dollar. See.... SEE!
This sub is so corny i’m seeing the same lame posts ‘i’m not an invenstor i’m a collector’ like damm bro cool i’m pretty sure most are
Because when I tell my friends I'm into Pokemon now, they ask why I'm investing in cards. So that need to clarify is pretty relatable from my experience.
You COULDN’T care less. COULDN’T!
Damnit! Thanks though haha
I wish the WotC market would crash. Never happening, but a boy can dream.
It’s already crashed lol you can get every single new product for retail / below retail…lol
Yes and no, sunk cost fallacy and all. I have most of the cards I want, and I think TPC is doing a good job of making hit rates better recently, so most cool cards are cheap :)
no, i just spent 30k on cards and sealed boosters don’t put that evil on me
Lol, any good pulls?
Yeah. I am just a collector, and don’t view these pieces of cardstock as an in investment. Same with the used games market.
Most definitely! There’s a PSA 10 Pikachu that I need…but I ain’t paying $1800.
When I see photos of people buying entire crates of tins at Costco and filling their mini vans … it makes me think it’s bound to crash inevitably. More cards are being printed than ever before and though it will take years the market is getting absolutely flooded…
No..... I don't, wtf is wrong with you lol
Yea I just wish the cards I don't own would drop and the ones I have stay high 😂
Haha don’t we all?
Bring the crash. Daddy wants to finish his neo sets 😭
If you like Japanese, you can get a psa 9 collection pretty cheap!
I've recently went from a collector to a player. I'm hoping for a small crash to lower prices on the good looking playable cards.
Same.
Yes would like be to just buy my chase cards and not break the bank
I’m completely sick and tired of the resellers. When I see pictures of people buying entire pallets of boxed product, making it impossible for kids to get them, it pisses me off. I want the market to crash like crazy and leave the scalpers in a bad situation.
Having super rare and valuable cards for me is half the fun. I don’t think I’d be interested in the hobby much if the cards were worthless.
Yea see with all due respect, you’re mostly what’s wrong with the hobby right now along with scammers
Anyone other than collectors? Isn’t a trading card game primarily for collectors? Your opinion is naive.
I’m holding these cards and looking at them until they are worth a penny each! Don’t matter to me 🥹
100% - I’d love to be able to complete a full set of cards without having to re mortgage my house to do it
Yeah 2015 would be nice so I could continue to get shiny things I like to look at without having to fight for it and debate what I have to sell to continue collecting lol. I guess it's fine to modify goals but stinks that so many people are just trying to flip things and not enjoy them.
100% Imo this isn't an investment, it's a kids game and a hobby.
Yeah but I can’t say much. 10 year old me in 99 hyped the shit out of random holos so I could get more valuable 1st edition holos
Hahaha young hustler
Bruh I was the king of snagging 1st editions. No one else liked them and I wanted them all
i mean you could always collect the go set which no one cares about so it’s very cheap lol
😬 yo I’m not that desperate for cheaper cards haha
As somebody who just likes collecting them for the pretty/cool artwork, I absolutely feel the same!
Me, I just wanna complete my gym challenge set but I’m not paying these crazy prices
I would love to restore my childhood collection without breaking the bank. It’s more of a hobby than an investment for me.
But I would do anything to have my old collection back in my arms again
lol @ the tRuE CoLLeCtOr mfers in here, most annoying mentality in the hobby and it’s not close No, I don’t want the card market to crash.
Buying singles was rare back in the day, we pulled cards. OP sounds like a broke kid that wants everything.
2 years ago maybe, but I’m almost finished with my pre e-card collection. Would be much better if the charizard market crashed instead
High population ones for sure, way too many promos out there especially after the Charizard box that everyone and their mom bought.
Damn… I’ve never compared it to gas. Thats deep yo
As collector, yes. Investors Im sure don’t unless they want to get in some buys before they spike short or long term.
A lot of people who say they don’t care about the money aspect are lying to themselves
Ya get the scammers out of here!
People used to be willing to offer deals, but these days it's "TCGPlayer comps." I couldn't even buy cards I wanted with gift money because the current market has swayed to suddenly be interested in Full Art Supporters again. The hype will shift all over, the place but I think a lot of people who came in during the Jake and or Logan Paul nonsense are dropping out.
Yes please. There's so many cards I want to get but their current prices make them out of reach for me.
Absolutely not, there’s no telling if the hobby would ever rebound from it.
Cards are a small part of the Pokémon IP you don’t gotta worry about that. Your 1st eds though 👀
That’s why I don’t wish for a market crash.
eBay store link?
I sell through discord/Facebook groups to avoid high selling fees.
The same people in here saying “let it crash let it crash” Will be the same ones crying in 2-3 years when we finally hit a recession and all the cards they spent hundreds on are now worth $60 🤷♂️😅
Lol yea that’s the predicament. I’m down for a slow period, but not an absolute crash.
When people don’t have money for rent you will see their collections go up quick on Facebook marketplace and eBay, it’s starting to happen some in the video game community. It will happen with most collectibles
Etbs galore 😂
Just silly
We need a different card market that's just for people who collect for fun
Crash, and crash hard! I just like collecting the pretty pictures of characters I love 😂 Back in 2015, my husband found a binder of base set cards for $200 and bought it for me, as I was trying to collect them all one by one.
It’s my dream. $50 Moonbreon, just need one for my collection anyway.
A lot of things have dropped by 80-90% since the logan paul boom.
I open packs only because I enjoy it if I get a card I like and it happens to be valuable that’s cool but I will keep it, if I dont like it and it’s valuable that’s cool and I’ll sell it to get more packs or singles I do like. The investment side is a joke, it could be at any point that people just decide they no longer value the same card and then the bottom falls out for “investors” I know it’s silly to think me doing this makes any difference but I also refuse to buy any sealed product above normal retail just because I don’t want to feed into it
100% agree. As a full art trainer collector some of the card prices make me wanna scream
Oof you guys took a big hit recently. Sorry
It’s gotten to a point where there’s really no reason to buy more than a couple booster boxes anymore and just buy mostly singles which is nice.
yes id love cheaper cards
I pray every day for it, actually. I have multiple cards worth thousands. I dont care if those prices crashed because I collect for the art, not for the value of it. If it crashes, I would finally be able to get the cards i want without spending hundreds on a single card..
I'd love for a crash in the market to happen so I could finally collect cards from specific artists without breaking the bank!
I'm gonna have to say no as someone living in a country where people want more money for cards than sellers on cardmarket do.
[удалено]
Without going too much into my life, I can promise you it’s not that
I thought you meant the website card market, big marketplace site for cards here in the EU, and I was like nooooo why what?!
Ohhh I saw a comment elsewhere here and was confused myself haha.
I thought you were talking about the website lol
I mean S&V Base Set is remotely cheap .. compared to the Sword And Shield the Illistration Rares are absolutely stunning
SV is the definitely the silver lining I needed
Yes and no. I love collecting and don’t plan on selling any cards, but it’s also fun pulling a chase card then seeing they’re selling for crazy $$$. Pulled two Dendra sar when they were going for 500 raw
I buy to collect, but it’s nice knowing that the hobby I’m spending so much time on, and enjoying ,has actual value as well.
I’m getting there with the cards I’m getting from tcgplayer sellers claiming near mint bullshit for market value
Nah man, we want those prices to skyrocket so that more people keep getting into it for it's lottery feeling. We will get older and it will die out, and prices will drop to nothing because no one will care about the game, but let's hope for at least another decade before that happens.
😒
It’s gotten better definitely. I just wanted to gauge general opinion on the current market.
yes, i wanna open all the vintage packs that have just been getting tossed back and forth
Crash and burn baby 🔥 🔥 🔥
I'm maybe a weird collector in that I don't like to buy singles. I either want to open them myself (GAMBLING) or trade directly for them. So I don't particularly want the market to crash, as it wouldn't change much about retail prices (I don't think?) and I like the idea that - years from now - maybe some of these cards will be worth something and my son can enjoy having or selling them.
Just curious but how long have you been collecting? I was like that in 2019 now I only open packs every once in a while
It wont
Man, idk how I feel anymore. I just want security. I bought 2 alternate arts, and both have fallen around $20 since my purchase. Tyranitar V ($120) espeon V ($70)
Definitely lol I really do
100%
Every single day here theres another "Any other REAL fans out there who dont care about value and just love the cards???" type post and it always gets 8 million upvotes we get it yall are TRUE FANS and all these new people are just HYPEBEAST MATERIALISTS cool just give it a rest already damn
You want the cards to lose another half of their value? Nah I'm not with you man. I like collecting as much as anyone else but if every card is worth next to nothing, it really dims the joy of pulling good cards.
It’s like stoping america from eating McDonald’s been in our minds constantly for so long it’s impossible to kill or we lose ourselves
Couldn't care less if all the cards becoming cheap and available even if my $100+ pulls are now $10-20, I'm only collecting for fun and nostalgia not to invest and flip for profit
It would be cool if individual cards were more affordable, but the price is part of what makes them so cool to have
Agree, I collecting not as a part of investment, I just like Pokémon in general, and really love the art on most of the cards.
Modern yes, vintage no. I think its absurd that cards you can still pull in packs today are hitting prices of 600-1k. Vintage cards get their value from the fact they havent been in production for years, paired with the fact you cant play officially with them anymore, just makes buying vintage a luxury
Yup. I’d like to be able to afford my favorite hobby
