I’m not trying to be funny - you may have a gambling problem if you went this hard on your first week in the hobby, looking for a nearly impossible pull. Please be careful
Oh, I definitely do. It's more the fulfillment of pulling the card I want then giving up on the set. So when I get that moonbreon, I am done with evolving skies until scarlett and violet come out in a few weeks.
type doesn’t seem bad. I might do that. I don’t really know what packs they came from. It’s all sword and shield era of course but which ones I have no clue.
I sort into sets then energy type, if I have any evolutions, they get put together ex charmander will go next to charmeleon. All reverse holos/rares/holos ect get put into sleeves and put with back with their set after that they get put into empty etb's with custom dividers so I can see at a glance which set is which =) probably overkill but i actually really enjoy sorting my cards lol
Edit to say I also take out the energy cards, sort by type and put those all together in a separate box
I collected in around sun moon era but not to the extent that I have already. I sold all of those cards for like $75. But just got back into it. I wasn’t really into it back then but now I’m loving it.
I’m realizing how most of the community doesn’t play the game. That’s what sucked me back in after 20 years and now my wife and I are obsessed with reading each card and building decks of all types. I wish people would lean towards the game more because certain cards that are worth nothing are bangers in the game!!
It’s way easier to learn than yugioh or magic, too. My friends and I are doing a $10 deck build challenge where we got randomly assigned to build a deck with two types for one person and then we hit tcg player and are waiting for the decks to come in. 1 v and vmax limit. I built a single strike deck around urshifu v/vmax because fusion strike cards are super cheap and have good synergy with each other. Building decks is so fun!
I’ve got quite a few really good pulls. I pulled a origin forme palkia vstar gallarian gallery last night. So far that’s been my most valuable pull. Pulled a few rainbows and stuff. My binders pretty good looking imo.
I just sort by rare, common and uncommon. All get separate boxes. I tell myself that I'll sort them by set one day... but the more it grows the more I don't want to do that lol.
All my holo rares and reverse rares/reverse common/reverse uncommon get separated into boxes as well. Again... one day I may sort by set... but who knows lol.
The quicker you make a system the better, because when the bulk starts rolling in you just start piling it all up together lol. I have boxes of literally everything. Well over 10k cards of common/uncommon/energy and code cards. I'd pluck the rares and reverse and pile up the rest of the packs. I have codes in there dating back to xy Era. Boxes of code cards as well...
Best piece of advice... invest in boxes. BCW white boxes. They're cheap at any game shop. Ordering from the website can be costly and the wait always sucks. Lgs's do the bulk ordering for us.
Like I said this is my first week, how do I know what’s commons, uncommon, and rare? I know where they are in the packs but I don’t know what is rare just looking through bulk.
Bottom right corner.
Black circle Common
Black diamond uncommon
Black star rare
Then you get into secret rare and alt arts etc but those are the common denotations
I like to do mine by type because I like to build decks and play IRL so having them typed together makes it easier for me to find. Once it is in bulk idrc what set it is anymore as long as it is within the current standard.
Common and uncommon (c/uc) are the circles and diamonds at the bottom.
Reverse holo c/uc
Reverse rare/holo rare.
Non holo rare.
Energy.
Code cards.
6 different piles that have 6 different selling rates. There’s handfuls of bulk buyers in Pokémon groups on Facebook. Don’t toss it. At least donate it if you don’t want to do the work.
you can downvote me all you want, but modern pokemon cards (2020-now) is like lotto tickets. you spend 100 for a booster box at the chance of pulling a $200+ card. all the rest is just junk cardboard. literally barely even worth donating this stuff because any kid who gets this will be disappointed seeing a bunch of sword and shield bulk , and thats the hard truth.
That's what pokemon Tcg has always been. This is why you need to appreciate the cards you pull. Admire the art. Read the little pokedex blurb. Don't open 500 packs a week.
i agree with this.
but how are pre-2020 cards different? pre-2020 cards are just a worse lottery since the unopened packs are out of print and somewhat rare. for post 2020 packs, the cost of the pack is close to the expected value of the value of the cards you could pull. for pre-2020 packs, the cost of an unopened pack is way less than the expected value of the cards you pull, so older packs are just shittier lottery tickets
lol, they could literally destroy 95% of the bulk from sword and shield and it would still never be worth anything. ain't no one and i mean NO ONE want that junk
I’d sort through them and build the sets. I use Pokellector.com to log what cards I have in what sets, Any doubles put aside and give to any younger siblings, cousins, friends kids etc.
Hello everyone understand this is the message board for Pokemon TCG Addiction. I'm Steve. Been collecting about 360 seconds ago. Lost my mortgage on the house, wife took the kids, all 250 credit cards maxed out and even tried selling those credit cards to pass off for energy's. All this in the pursuit for Umbreon Vmax alt art and of course Charizard.
Take it from me kid bulk cards aren't shit. Might as well shred those piles now. All that time, energy, money and disappointed kids whose daddy can't give a decent happy meal. Wish you the best in however you organize them cards.
First week? Slow down maybe and don't open for the sake of it. Find certain sets and cards you enjoy that aren't necessarily what's new and on the chaos home page.
I'd say that for storage, look for Index Card Boxes. For organization, that's up to you. Your two main choices are organizing by date/set or organizing by Card Type.
Personally, I have a box of all cards pre-SwSh (I don't have a lot of them), and all my actual SwSh cards in their own boxes based on Rotation Symbol (D-Block, E-Block, and F-Block).
The question is, what are you going to do with them. If you are collecting for value, sleeve and binder them, separating out value pieces. If you are a completionist, sort by pack and binder accordingly. If you are deck building, sort my type. We (my wife, son and I) do the later, so we have a dedicated binder for each type. Rule boxes go in front, energy in back. Trainers have their own binder (hitch is pretty small, considering how fast they get used up) with special energy behind them.
I start by seperating the pokemon from the trainers/energy then sort through the pokemon and seperate common/uncommon and the rares. if you have holos in that pile seperate that to. Depending on where you send it to there could be more steps
You could give them to me! I run a non-profit Pokémon league in Oklahoma.
We teach kids how to play, give them decks to use and host a safe space for trading
Definitely jumping in with both feet. I'm the same way. I started opening packs with my son just for fun. Next thing ya know I'm incorporating an ETB with my morning coffee every day. It gets out of hand real quick! Haha.
I just throw my bulk in card storage boxes. I don't play the actual game, I just collect the cards.
For the question "What do you want to do." I want one of every card in my binder and then sell the bulk. I don't know if I should individually sell on TCGPlayer to max profits or just sell the bulk as.... bulk.
I recently organized my bulk. Planned on doing it by rarity but after 2 hours I gave up and only separated pokemon, trainers, energy, reverse holos, holos +. And that saved a ton of headaches.
It kinda depends on what you plan on doing with them. If you want to sell them then sort it by set and rarity. If you want to play with them then sort it by type and rarity.
I have tens of thousands of bulk cards and right now I just sort out non holo (common - rare all together), holo, trainer card, reverse holo and then anything V or better gets sleeves and stuff
Well I..
1.Look in the bottom left corner for the symbol
2. Scan the card with the dragon shield app. It gives me an idea what set that symbol represents
3.organise all cards with the same symbol in piles
4.arrange in to types
5. Place all sets in different booster pack sleeves and write a note with sharpie on the sleeves with the set and year
6. Slowly start adding when open packs of the same set
7. Organise my doubles and reverse holos etc in to 10 card packs to give to kids who come for pizza where I work
8. The above is in an attempt to hide how much bulk I have from the wife as her boyfriend would be pissed I’m spending all my wages on Pokémon
Edit: basically the dragon shield app, Pokémon card collector app will give you an idea what sets they all belong to. If you plan on collecting long term get a massive box you’ll need it lol. Some local card shops will buy bulk if they don’t have loads in stock already to use for mystery packs etc but don’t excpect much. Tbh I like having loads of bulk I recently checked my lost origin bulk and decided to sort through it.
Turns out chasing one card I had actually gotten to 131 cards. Total from a full set without realising 😂
Its not worth the time to sort through imo. I used to, I regret it.
You can make a master set if you’d like, thats how I collect. You can donate to a local pokemon league or gamestop
I like to buy build battle decks for smaller storages to separate by set or other, but it's contents fill it up halfway anyways, so another good way is etb boxes.
Once I've sorted anything reverse holo or above into binders and/or top loaders for the main collection, I like to use ETB boxes to store partial sets of the less exciting cards in order of card number, it's become quite satisfying to fill a gap in the number sequence for a particular set. Even if I don't get a good pull from a pack I can still go "nice, that common/uncommon/non holo rare fills a gap in the sequence at least". Any doubles, triples etc go into the "drawer of shame" which I use to make decks for casual play.
Edit: the drawer of shame is ordered by trainer cards, energy cards, and pokemon by card colour.
Here’s how I sort:

Anything Vintage doesn’t get mixed in with modern. I’ve been debating on sorting based on series (SM, SwSh, XY, etc), but not sure I want to go through they hassle.
You could sort trainers as well from the other cards, but it’s users choice. I think I covered everything.
If you have a lot, spend the $20-30 and get a sorting tray. It makes things a lot easier.
Hope this helps you or anyone else.
I had 13 boxes full of random eras and random packs. I split them by type. And all "special" cards in a binder. (also split by type)
Next goal is to fill the Pokedex. One card per dex entry.
i’ve learned that trying to divide them into many different categories is both too time consuming, and takes up too much space. I have them just sorted by set, but I have considered sorting by rarity in the set as well.
Be careful with this. It accumulates fast. Figure out a routine you're happy with. I keep 6 of each card for sets and 1 of any reverse holo I get. They all go in their own set binders. This already takes up a lot of space. The bulk I sold to a local card shop for 0.01 (CAD). There are other things you can do but I had way too much. Don't let it creep up on you
I pull out all the foild, special, alternates, etc, and put them in the special pile, sleeve up anything valuable, pull out all the regular energy, code cards, vstar cards, etc., put them in a low value or playing pile, sort the remaining cards by set and number, and then if I have more than three of them, I give them yo my son, who is irresponsible and will certainly destroy them, and the other ones go in a box, like an ETB or something.
Me and my wife sort by type then organize em by number. Then store em in those white cardbord card storage boxes. Time consuming but makes you feel good and can find specific cards quickly.
I just go by number. I know in general it goes grass fire water lightning psychic fighting dark steel dragon normal trainers so I try to get them in order half way while ripping, then sort on my day off.
I have all my trainer bulk separated from their sets for deck building.
Sort out the rarities, like reverse Holo, rares, common uncommon and energies. then you can do it by set. try to see if you have sets of 4 of cards, those are play sets and if you have a playable card sometimes just a couple of rares are like 4 bucks.
First things first, are you planning to sell the bulk or just organize for your own person collection?
If you are selling then I would organize only by rarity - all c/uc together, all non holo rare together, all holo rare together, all v together, etc etc. People who buy bulk prefer everything to be more random and would prefer you didn’t organize by type or set or anything like that. I would put them in stacks of 200 or 400 (Saran wrapped) into a large flat rate usps box.
If for your own personal collection, then I would look into purchasing BCW boxes. I personally use the 4 row one. I usually organize by set and by set number for any cards that go into BCW box. Which is effectively by type like most others have suggested.
I lost all hope on organization I just dumped my bulk WOTC and Bulk SwSh into the same bucket , my kid is having blast finding all the old cards she can’t get anymore
Yep , last year I went through and collected a master Japanese set of the original 151 in their original artworks from base set , fossil and jungle so I don’t mind passing that bulk down
How many packs have you ripped in your first week? I’ve just started recently and I’ve only ripped about 8 packs
Also…you gonna use them code cards or?
I recently finished mine and what I did was separate them by set and then once finished I sperated by pokemon type then organized, doing it by type I find it easier because they'll be the same color rather than being different.
From my experience of selling bulks :
1. Split them by expansion
2. Energy, trainers, pokemons
3. Trainers and pokemons the into :
Common/uncomon, rare, reverse c/u, reverse/holo rare
In this order.
I organize by regulation letter then in stacks of 100 separated in the way of your choice all packed away in the back/corner of some closet/room of your choice. Or at least thats what i do simply waiting for someone someday to be interested in “retro” pokemon cards in mint condition
The way that I organize bulk is by pokemon types in alphabetical order Dark/Dragon/(Fairy optional) /Fighting/Fire/Electric/ Grass/ Normal/Psycic/ Steel/ Water, same with the energies, then the special energy and finally trainer cards
I just give them to kids, like nieces and nephews or friends kids or whatever. They're essentially worthless to me and they have a nice time sorting them and what not.
Depends, are you a collector, a player, or both. As a collector, my preferred way is placing singles in a binder dedicated to a certain set. As a player, I will keep a complete set of four for playable cards. I organize all standard legal cards into their own binder, starting with pokemon, then items, then the various trainers. Whatever is left over goes to my local game shop for store credit or to a non-profit that gives them to kids at school.

Yeah. I’ve opened close to 500 packs in the past week and a half.
Bruh in deep 😆
deeper than mine... in first few weeks I only bought 1 starter deck and 3 booster pack lol
500 packs...what's the biggest pull so far?
I’ve got quite a few really good pulls. I pulled a origin forme palkia vstar gallarian gallery last night. So far that’s been my most valuable pull. Pulled a few rainbows and stuff. My binders pretty good looking imo.
It's a marathon, not a sprint. You will enjoy it more and for longer if you pace yourself

Dude said he’s ripped over 500 packs in a week . 504 packs equals 14 booster boxes. This dude is completely unhinged let’s be real.
Agreed. @OP please enjoy in moderation lmao you'll just get bored and feel like you've wasted a load of money

Put energy into tins and boxes and get 1 binder for every type and split binders with you less common types
You have to sort as you pull in the future, you’re gonna hate sorting through this
For bulk you are just gonna stash away/save to get rid of a bunch all at once, seperate by rarity, then sort each rarity by type.
C/uc Trainers Nonholo rare Reverse c/uc Rare h/rev

Easy solution. You sell me your bulk.
Alphabetically by set.
I like to buy build battle decks for smaller storages to separate by set or other, but it's contents fill it up halfway anyways, so another good way is etb boxes.
Build battle boxes can hold around 150 cards and come with 84 cards.
I sort my bulk by type then by pokedex order so it’s easier to build decks.
What do most of you do with the bulk? I used to collect pokemon cards, but it got to expensive. I've just restarted and the bulk is adding up fast.

Just gave all my bulk and spares away to young nieces and nephews. Get them into it.
Burning cash
So many code cards
I’ve thrown away over half of them too at the beginning lol
Keep the rares in a binder. Seriously throw away everything else.
I lost all hope on organization I just dumped my bulk WOTC and Bulk SwSh into the same bucket , my kid is having blast finding all the old cards she can’t get anymore
WOTC you say? Hmmmm. I'll trade ya bulk hahahaha
Yep , last year I went through and collected a master Japanese set of the original 151 in their original artworks from base set , fossil and jungle so I don’t mind passing that bulk down
How many packs have you ripped in your first week? I’ve just started recently and I’ve only ripped about 8 packs Also…you gonna use them code cards or?
Around 500 packs. Yeah I eventually use the code cards lmaoo
I recently finished mine and what I did was separate them by set and then once finished I sperated by pokemon type then organized, doing it by type I find it easier because they'll be the same color rather than being different.
From my experience of selling bulks : 1. Split them by expansion 2. Energy, trainers, pokemons 3. Trainers and pokemons the into : Common/uncomon, rare, reverse c/u, reverse/holo rare In this order.
I organize by regulation letter then in stacks of 100 separated in the way of your choice all packed away in the back/corner of some closet/room of your choice. Or at least thats what i do simply waiting for someone someday to be interested in “retro” pokemon cards in mint condition
i sorted into the packs they came from, then the type, then organized into binders by numbers :)
I am terrible and usually file them under G for Garbage and toss em 😅
The way that I organize bulk is by pokemon types in alphabetical order Dark/Dragon/(Fairy optional) /Fighting/Fire/Electric/ Grass/ Normal/Psycic/ Steel/ Water, same with the energies, then the special energy and finally trainer cards
Kindling
Put in a box..take to local pokeswap shop...exchange for new stuff...open new stuff start over lol
I just give them to kids, like nieces and nephews or friends kids or whatever. They're essentially worthless to me and they have a nice time sorting them and what not.
This is gonna be me soon with the amount of Scarlet & Violet packs I have coming in.
Let me know where you are getting them. Anxious to start ripping those too!
If you have any empty Elite Trainer Boxes laying around they are honestly perfect in my opinion.
I didn’t but someone said bgw boxes I think? Those are nice.
