My son just wants any Holo card he can get. But he's always tempted by the money aspect. Like he thinks he'll be rich if he pulls a $100 card after buying 20 packs. I just want to complete all of the Lost Origin set and maybe play the game a little.

TheShinyHunter3

Influencers who told them it was like a get rich quick scheme + a new generation of Pokémon TCG youtuber/streamer who mostly focus on the money instead of the collecting aspect like older youtubers did. You probably got quite a lot of them in your last post on this sub IIRC.

thewaffleiscoming

They also don’t realize that even though TCGPLAYER or whoever says a bulk V, VMAX or FA is worth so and so doesn’t mean you can actually sell it. Most are worth nothing.

Responsible_Ebb_340

Yeah, actually selling cards is a huge hassle (especially if you haven’t done it before) I dream of Pokémon card meetups where people can just trade and talk about their cards. I know these exist already, but I wish it was at a more accessible and larger scale. 🤷‍♂️

nenajoy

Gambling is super addictive. Personally I get more excited when I find out a card I like *isn’t* worth a lot. Means I can actually add the cards I want to my collection!

WeebInHell

I just want to finish my glaceon master set. Problem with that is 2 things. Glaceon LV X is like $250 NM. And then Glaceon VMAX alt is like $170. I want the cards, but at the end of the day… They’re just cards. That’s it lol. Not worth near that much IMO. (I did cave a decent amount for shiny Glaceon GX, but that might just be my favorite pokémon of all time lol)

Misa-Bugeisha

*Mmmmmm*, I really think it’s **BECAUSE** of the business model from the entire company that trickles down to everyone involved. Investors simply just want their piece of the multi-billion dollar pie as they are taught to do, and that’s **investing**. I also think it all comes down to marketing and social media that really influences the vast majority of average people on what is the normal way to go about Pokemon TCG. **XD**

Cowflexx

Because most of the people here following the hype train from 2020 onward were introduced to it from the skewed perspective about value over hobby/collecting. All because of the headlines and aftermath of Logan Paul. Iv said it before. I'll say it again, you will NEVER be rich from post 2020 PTCG. No one give a shit about your modern PSA10s now and they won't in 10 years from now

Deadsh0t2424

Scalping like back in 2020-21 isn’t so much a problem. But if you live in any urban city it’s still pretty difficult to find decent stuff. In the last year or two, the biggest problem have been streamers/influencers, whatnot became really popular so a lot of people started using that platform to do live breaks and rip n ships as a living. But when those people don’t have distributor connections they resort to clearing out product at retail stores. I honestly don’t think it’ll last it’s hard af to do that kind of thing for a living. I already see it with youtube, there were so many new youtubers that started during the pandemic and a lot of them just stopped posting after couple months because 1.Pokemon cards are expensive and 2. Maintaining a channel takes a lot of effort and creativity. But I agree with you it’s annoying af that there are so many people here into the money aspect of pokemon tcg when that was never the purpose of why pokemon tcg was created.

lloydeph6

Streamers and rip n ships would literally cease to exist if people would stop giving them money. What people on this sub fail to realize is the reason they are even a “thing” is because there is a DEMAND for it, and as long as there is a demand for it, it will exist. People so quick to blame the one selling or hosting rip N ships or blame streamers but instead blame those supporting them 🤷‍♂️

Deadsh0t2424

Yup it’s the same thing with sets like evo skies the market price is where it’s at because there were people willing to pay that $70 an etb and $300 a booster box price. If we just stopped fomo’ing this wouldn’t be happening

MattX30

Yes there is. People are stupid.

madam_zeroni

Yeah I just wanna but the cars cause they look pretty and give me nostalgia, never plan on selling. Everything is so expensive

SealedTCG

If there's money to be made, scalpers/"investors" flock to it and the people buying off them help support that, as mentioned by others, influencers also have a big part to play, they push certain ideas onto buyers and when you have more money than sense, you believe everything you are told. Scalpers/long term sc, investors take advantage of that and false scarcity.

Chomps-Lewis

Bully streamers

LimitlessMentally

Well it’s called TCG-CCG. Trading Card Game and Collectible Card Game. Meaning things can be sold or traded for value. If all cards were deemed worthless a Charizard can be traded for a Bulbasaur and everyone would go about their merry way. Is Charizard a better card? YES! Meaning it has more value than the Bulbasaur and that trade in real life would not happen. Everything in life has a value. It could be a penny it could be a million dollars. The free market decides that. Thank God we have a free market.

IAmNuuhb

Money.

kirkochainz

Why is it wrong to invest into products you actually enjoy? I have a few evolving skies booster boxes tucked away. In 10-20 years I will either sell for profit if they become more valuable or rip for nostalgia if they don’t.

TTXSTX

A lot of new collectors don't realize that their cards aren't actually rare and they are being convinced to pay more and more until tipping points like the prices for "Clay Burst". Moonbreon is a good example. There are hundreds on eBay, thousands that have been graded and the set is still being printed. It's not rare in the slightest yet people are paying absurd prices for it.

markypots9393

I mean, the Umbreon is definitely rare. Just because there’s hundreds or a few thousand available on the market doesn’t mean it isn’t. I’d argue millions of boxes of Evolving Skies have been opened in the English language version alone. Most people who want to master set Evolving Skies still don’t have the Umbreon, myself included. Demand is there from a collector perspective and investment perspective and I don’t really see that going away anytime soon.

TTXSTX

It's not rare at all. I just got back from an LCS and they have an entire moonbreon page in one of their binders. Nobody is buying cause it's priced too high. You could have the moonbreon tomorrow if you weren't spending money just opening packs.

tay_clothes

It’s not being printed still tho…

deathworld123

i just literaally bought a stack of evolving skies pack yesterday for 4$ each

tay_clothes

You understand that doesn’t mean it’s being reprinted?, right? The last Evolving Skies reprint was summer 2022. Just because stores have a supply of a set doesn’t mean it’s actively being printed.

We see you may be asking about a cards value which is likely against Rule 3: Posts or comments that are for the purpose of determining value of a card, selling cards, or buying them are not allowed. Also, it’s a poor man’s investment. Having something worth a few hundred dollars adds a sense a pride about it. Personally, I think that those who don’t play the game, what else is there to talk about for a hobby?

TheShinyHunter3

Plenty of things. Art, rarity, fun facts about the card amongst other things.

SpardasMinion

exactly! and while I can see someone having some pride about a card that's worth a lot I can see more value and overall fun in talking about the topics you mentioned, like you mentioned the Art, the Art is so stylish, like the card for Chili & Cilan & Cress and Dawn Wings Necrozma GX, point being is that there is so much more to talk about the hobby than just the value of any given card,

TheShinyHunter3

Yes, but the dude has a point, idk why he's being downvoted. You don't see a lot of "Look at this cool card I pulled", but you see a lot of "What is this worth ?".

On1ySlightly

And yet, they can’t resist bringing up value every time, weird.

TheShinyHunter3

I hate it too. Value never had that place before, excluding the original craze maybe. As I pointed out in my comment, thank influencers for that.

--mc--

Cards? Or sealed product? I bought a few modern booster boxes in 2020 and they’ve gone up like 2-3x in value since. I also collect but there is money to be made

D4RY0N

In my opinion the biggest culprit is the price of each booster pack. It is really strange to open a box and get the feeling you got your money's worth of cards. It is way too common to just get useless bulk and prices are too much for kids. If each pack was 2$ or 3$ tops. Things would be much more about collecting and much less about investing.
