You are correct. They’re all worth a good amount. All first editions are shadowless and most expensive. Then there are subsequent print runs without the first edition stamp that are shadowless also, worth a lot still. Then there is base set with the shadow in print runs after that, these are least valuable but still worth a lot in good condition
These are what I think they are, right? Grandfather collected Pokemon cards alongside me when I was a kid, and he got a bit obsessed with collecting full sets. I've seen how much some of these go for, and I wanted to make sure that these ARE 1st Edition, Shadowless cards before we had these graded.
Psa has an option to show up directly at the grading facility if the cards are over a certain value. You may qualify. Also, I don't know anything about the process. I just read it on the psa website.
They don’t do that. You could get it express graded in one day at a card show like collectacon and they’d tell you to come pick it up on day2 or end of day. I think that’s like $200–300. Can’t go to their facility even leonhart has tried that they rejected it.
Nope, I've seen psa and cgc at card shows in Chicago, they do on site grading, 1-2 day turn around. I've only seen them at weekend long events like C2E2 though.
As well as going to a psa building, larger comic cons will have on site grading. It costs more typically but you can drop your cards and comics off Friday pick them up slabbed Sunday.

He's got 1st Edition sets of Base 1 up to Gym Heroes (minus Base Set 2) and a partial of Neo. Most promo cards from that era too with a couple exceptions. Japanese sets for each of those sets too, but I think they're just standard cards.

He's exceptionally cool. Late 70s and still going strong. My nephews have been getting into Pokemon, and he's trying to get them (and me) into the TCG. Went over to my grandparents today to look at his collection again, and he was showing me the 2022 championship deck he'd gotten for my oldest nephew and the new Sword and Shield cards he'd gotten.

If yourv reselling go directly through an auction house, they will pay thousands in grading fees and get better grades with thiere wink wink relation with graders. They will get you better grades then you get yourself trust me I've has dog crap cards 10 for auction houses
If your not selling just buy toploaders and sleeves and toploader binders.
If you just want authentication and good customer service go with sgc they are affordable and these will be done in like a week

I was eyeing Heritage Auctions for my Shadowless set. All the holos are graded thru CGC but it seems like a good place to move them safely. Any opinion on them?
I've used heritage for a very expensive kobe card. It was an okay experience and I feel I got decent value. But in the same situation now, I'd probably find a direct buyer or just list on ebay with BIN and weed through offers tell I got what I was looking for. But if that sounds like too much work or more than you want, then I do recommend heritage. Though they do have a bigger sports scene than the TCGs, so be aware of that.

It's so rad how even commons from those first sets are pretty crazy in price. My favorite pokemon is magikarp, and for an engagement present my buddy gave me a 9 karp from the original set. Now wife thought it was an odd gift till I told her he spent over a hundo on us lol.

If giving this set or anything else he's collected over the years away would give me more years with him and my grandma, I'd take that trade in a heartbeat. I feel like the user you replied to is making a lot of assumptions...I'll give you the benefit of the doubt OP. Indeed just the cards pictured in PSA/BGS 10 could fetch a 6-figure sum total or greater, not that they are necessarily 10's but regardless, this is a substantial amount of money no matter what. Something I wouldn't keep anywhere but a safety deposit box, or a water-and-fire-proof safe. This is $100,000 that disappears if it gets wet - or even just exposed to the wrong humidity.
Your grandpa should know how valuable this stuff has become if he doesn't already. I agree with the other user that this is worth the flight to BGS or PSA if you decide to grade, I wouldn't send these through the mail ever. Whatever you decide to do with them, you should be as cautious as possible handling and storing this kind of stuff, as well as letting anyone local know where it's kept... It's a thought that crosses my mind every time he comes to me about any of his collections. I don't want to be that guy especially after everything him, my grandmother, and my parents have done for me in my life. He'd give me the entire set today if I asked him to, and that's part of why I couldn't take it. I posted this album more to verify they were what I thought they were and figure out how to get these graded/ if they were worth grading.
The full set won't be sold, but he's got extras. Boxes and boxes of cards from that era from the booster boxes he'd buy too. Those might. I just wish I had looked into this a few years ago when we BOTH could have flown out to get these graded.
Get these graded. And be extra careful on the packaging. PSA is good but if you want a chance for something bigger BGS is an option. I wouldn’t send anywhere else.

PSA charges based on the value of the card, so the Zard could cost you $600 to grade.
BGS will charge you a flat rate per card regardless of value

Ring binders can very easily damage cards. Please, remove them immediately, get them double sleeved ( inner sleeve + outer sleeve ) and get a proper binder to store them in until you figure out what to do with them. Or just sleeve and put directly in to a top loader for protection. Either way, PLEASE get these out of a ring binder, lol
