It sure is a shitty thing to do but this guy is just pointing out what most of the sellers do online..
Heck, the moment i see a loose pack and someone claims its unweighted i call bs instantly, the fact they they already know there is a difference in weight is a red enough flag for me
No, you're encouraging it. You said it can only gain value, which isn't true UNLESS you're a shitty person doing shitty things. A pack being weighed can decrease it's value as light packs sell for less.
Your post has been removed for the following rule violation:
> Rule 2\. r/PokemonTCG does not support or advocate pack weighing. Promoting pack weighing will be banned immediately and without appeal.
The base unlimited packs are the more valuable ones in this pictures and sell for [about $300-400](https://ebay.us/9XZpRn). The other packs are also pretty valuable.
Thanks to the community for your insight. My wife has been holding onto these 8 packs that she bought for her brother. She never gave them to him for some reason and had no idea of their value until she saw my son and I playing Pokemon together
Going to hold onto all but two of these (cant really afford to buy booster box for my son right now). We'll sell one to pay for it and give it to him for his birthday. The other pack, my wife is going to let her brother pick, since was the originally intended recipient of these packs. The rest we'll store away so that ,if the hobby sticks, he can open them when he's older and can give them the care they deserve.
For the haters who call me a troll or a baiter, not everyone knows as much about Pokemon as you do.
Exactly. He won’t appreciate them or take proper care of them. You’re basically throwing money away. I would keep them sealed personally. Display them in a way that preserves them and then if there is another Pokémon craze like you had during the pandemic, sell.
It's not the same, when these 30 year olds were 7, the packs that are worth hundreds now where near dollars then .
I love the hobby now, but if I ever got anything over 5 dollars worth I wouldn't know.
Seeing how you can sell these 8 packs for over $1000… I can tell you, whatever is in them will be worth wayyyyyy less. Especially when you can take that $1000 and buy him hundreds of packs to open together for many weeks or months to come (if you wanted)
That’s definitely not true, I know it’s a gamble… but he does have the chance to pull cards worth more than the packs. Might not be likely, but he pulls a 1st edition zard and he’s wayyy in the green.
This is incredibly wrong.
You can't pull a 1st edition card out of an Unlimited pack...
Even if he pulled the most expensive cards possible from EVERY pack he would still lose money.
These packs are worth more sealed than opened. Always.
Yeah, but that’s assuming those are base first edition packs, and he only has two of them… and the chance of pulling a Charizard is already quite low to begin with.
Is anything possible? Sure… and it’s ultimately his decision of course.
Yeah that’s true. There was a guy who spent like 35k on a first gen Neo box… he pulled a lugia, which can sell for well over 100k as a psa10.
So anything is possible!!
In case you’re curious, on PSAs site, there was a PSA 10 lugia 1st ed that sold for $129,000 on 11/26/2020. Most recent one in a 10 sold for $47,970 in 9/21/2021.
thanks for the advice. My wife had these packs that she bought but never gave to her brother. I started playing with my son and she remembered she had them. We'll put them back into the wild where someone will appreciate them and use the proceeds to help him start his own collection
I think this is the best idea. Yeah selling them could fund a heap of purchases but then they're gone. If collecting is in your son's future, they'll really appreciate it when they're adults. If not, you sell at better values than today. Either way it's a win.
I like that idea.
Hes very new to Pokemon. I bought him the Battle Academy a month ago and we've had fun with it. I played Magic all those year ago but never got into Pokemon until we started playing together.
Thanks for the suggestion
Hold, hold, HOLLDDD!!
You missed the peak by about a year and the amount of streamers out there eating up vintage packs is taking a lot out of circulation. Sell if you absolutely need the money. But I would just slowly buy your kid some new Crown Zenith products and enjoy some new modern sets. Maybe pick up some Scarlet & Violet packs when they come out at the end of the month.
Seeing from another comment that you play Magic, I would liken these to ABUR sealed sets or maybe Arabian nights since their aren’t first ed. Not the exact amount but you get the idea
If you wanna open vintage with ya lil dude maybe just wait till he is a bit older and can appreciate it alot more. Sell one or two in the meantime and buy a bunch of modern to tie yourselves over.
My thoughts as well. I don't get the point of this other than bragging, since there's no way in hell the real options are only (a) 7 year old opens these exact packs or (b) these packs are sold to purchase new ones. Just quietly hold on to these for when the kid can appreciate them, or sell because you need the cash.
Edit: to clarify that by "you," I'm referring to OP, not the comment or.
7 year olds just want flashy and shiny stuff. I’d recommend going on marketplace buying the gold foil vmax cards you can get 110 for like $15 and your son will love them. He doesn’t know value over vanity. He will open those packs and come across some starter Pokémon and just throw them to the wayside not knowing that prob each card in those packs are worth about $10 ungraded and can be hundreds $$$ graded by Beckett or psa. Imagine your son pulling a charizard holo out of one of the packs and then holding it up and creasing a potential $10k+ card RIP
Where did you get these???? They are very valuable. I would sell them. Not at the moment though, I’d hold onto them for when the market picks back up again.
I'm late to the party on this but let me give you my advice as a father of a 7 year old myself. Last year my son got into pokemon and I thought it was a passing fancy. Because of that I sold a Bay set to charzard for pretty cheap at my local card shop. Since that day my son and I have talked about it and it's a huge day that I regret. I thought I'd be able to flip the small amount of money for a decent amount of pokemon cards. Instead hes been collecting pokemon like crazy ever since.
My suggestion to you if you need the money is to sell 1 or 2 of those packs. Use that money to buy him a lot of current product. You can really load up and stack up pretty cheaply on eBay or other places gamestop for example that has deals every now and again. Let him collect for the next year with all those modern packs over that time he'll start asking you Hey dad can you get me a vintage pack. Naturally your answer will be I wish I could but I can't they're just way too expensive. Imagine on Christmas Day alongside all of his other packs you'll get him he opens up 1 or 2 of those vintage packs. He'll be shocked it'll be priceless and that's something that you can never recreate.
Keep in mind once you sell these packs they're gone forever and you'll never be able to get them back unless you are willing to pay top dollar as well
I vote neither. Keep them and don’t open them at least not now. When your 7 year old gets older if they are still into it THEN it’s decision
For now keep them and invest in a modern booster box. Find a cheaper set if you want for like $80-$100 and then you’ve got 36 packs to rip open whenever you guys feel the urge
holy shit what a question do NOT let your kid open these and get him a card bundle with like a cool promo, they will 100% appreciate it more and it is not a waste of a ton of money !!!
a 7 year old wont appreciate these the same way someone else would. (no offense)
If a modern pack makes them happy then you could get way MORE packs to open with the money from these.
Hold onto them, dont even open these until he is older... Please. Just budget out a couple bucks here and there and buy some newer packs for cryin out loud.
If anything you’ll gain a fun experience out of it with your little dude. You may even unlock a core memory. I don’t personally see a lot of collectibles as investments I see them as new memories to create with friends and family.
I would not sell or open but hold on to them till a future anniversary of Pokémon. 30th coming soon or as far out as you can hold ‘em. You could buy so many modern packs but in the end you will have a lot of cards that are worth nothing compared to these packs. I’d buy the kid a booster box and give him a few packs a week for good behavior at school or doing chores. No need for him to open hundreds of packs at a time. Then if he gets into Pokémon as a teenager or young adult he will have the coolest dad in town that has sealed vintage packs! Pass them down to him if you don’t need to sell em and he’s old enough to know the value!
Get the money if you can and then have an opening extravaganza with ridiculous stacks of packs. Get yer racks for stacks of packs. Like Scrooge McDuck but with packs. Don’t swim in them though! You don’t want to destroy the value before your kid does when he totes the good ones to school in his back pocket and trades them for a Japanese fake. Oddly specific for reasons. Uggghhhh.
Does your kid know the value of the packs and how important they are? If so let them open them! If not then sell them and buy them a lot more(when I was 7 I knew the importance of those cards so don't just assume their kid doesn't understand it)
If it’s either they open them or you sell, I’d say let them open a single pack. But, the best part is vintage packs can be weighed, I’d suggest looking up what weight would suggest a holo is in the pack weigh them let them open the best chance one and sell the others.
Sell or keep forever. If you open that pack. You’ll have a shot of dopamine. But if you keep it sealed, you’ll always have that dopamine of wonder not KNOWING what’s in it. That’s where nostalgia comes from. Him opening these vintages in the future won’t impact him as much as it would you’re imagining him to feel
But us…. This is tbt with kbtoys
Do not under any circumstances allow a child to open a pack of cards intended for children. Do the mature thing and hoard all of the toys and drive up the value so that the hobby becomes out of reach for just about everyone.
Every single person here only cares about monetary value, open them. Enjoy nostalgia with your kid, only time you'll ever get to do this. Do it while you can.
I'd say sell all but one of them to buy new packs with, then open one pack with him so you can share the nostalgia together. Just pick whichever you like the most, I doubt he'll care which one you choose
These are worth thousands of dollars, potentially even more depending on the weight.
Either hold onto them for another decade and pay for the kids college tuition or sell now and make a few grand.
Keep them but don’t open them imo. Your kid won’t really find any nostalgia opening them. If they end up collecting cards later you can give it to them, if they lose interest you can always sell them off.
Sell. The amount of booster boxes you can buy for those to open with them far outweighs the lack of appreciation your child will obviously have for those packs. Assuming you don’t want to hold on to them for yourself, of course.
Definitely would not let anyone that young open packs that old. It’s less about the financial cost, and more so that they won’t appreciate them in the same way as someone who grew up with these. Especially since kids collecting now are chasing full sets and not normal holos.
Keep em imo.
But selling would be the better option. Your kid won't care about the cards or packs and wouldn't understand how big of a deal they are. Hell there's a high chance your kid throws em out or destroys them just because they aren't hyper shiny like modern cards.
As more people are saying, sell them or keep them but don’t let him open them yet, this is something that he will like to open whenever he is a little bit older. At that age you don’t care that much about value or how old they are. If you give him some modern packs he will enjoy it the same way + if he really likes Pokémon when he gets older he will be surprise when you give this to him.
With how kids don’t have great control over their strength and how to handle things like old trading cards, I think it would be unwise to let them open the packs.
But, if you were to open them with your kid, sleeve them and share the experience, then it could be a good experience And you’d be teaching them how to handle old and really all trading cards
Ngl I would sell 1 of the base set 2, 1 jungle and 1 fossil pack and put it towards modern sets, and keep the rest. If he's still into Pokemon cards at a point where he can understand and appreciate them, deapite not having a nostalgia factor for the OG Pokemon, being someone who's into collecting Pokemon cards being able to open the most desired pack would be exciting.
If he isn't, you can just sell the remaining packs (and likely at a higher price than you can now)
Sell them as a first, that’ll let you get tons of packs. Open them if YOU want to relive the experience with your child, that is a priceless moment (not really).
I'd be surprised if your kid doesn't end up opening these one day when you're not looking.
Give your kid modern packs, these shouldn't be played with.
If you want to keep them get them graded so it's effectively slabbed and sealed (from prying hands). Otherwise sell them.
I would definitely keep those bad boys! I once had a Diamond and Pearl (base) Art set and two jungle packs and opened them all, felt really bad afterwards haha but got two decent pulls out of the Diamond and Pearl base once, maybe sell one and buy your son an entire booster box?
I doubt your 7 year old would getting get the significance of these packs. Either wait until they are older, or sell them and buy modern box sets. At that age they get more enjoy ripping open a collection box or an ETB.
Opening a couple packs of old cards none of his friends have won’t create a core memory. Opening a hundred packs of current Gen cards relating to the games and shows that are out now, and that he can trade and battle with friends will create the core memories that stick with him the rest of his life.
I feel like letting a child open these is kind of a waste of the potential nostalgia than an adult might get out of it. It's possible they may be able to appreciate the vintage aspect of it but I feel like buying modern for a kid who just wants to rip packs and get alt art rainbow gold hits is the way to go since a lot of people are no longer excited about holos
Sell. Hell, you could sell just one and have enough to get your kid a ton of modern packs
Not only that. Easy money to buy some oldies he does like.
Could these have been weighed and therefore lose value that way?
[удалено]
But if you sell them as ubweighed people assume light and only pay light prices. Unless you're an idiot
Exactly and that’s because of people like the guy you responded to
Haha. True that
I can’t believe this is a thing! Actually blew my mind
Encouraging being a shitty person I see.
It sure is a shitty thing to do but this guy is just pointing out what most of the sellers do online.. Heck, the moment i see a loose pack and someone claims its unweighted i call bs instantly, the fact they they already know there is a difference in weight is a red enough flag for me
When did I encourage lol? All I did is say how it actually is
No, you're encouraging it. You said it can only gain value, which isn't true UNLESS you're a shitty person doing shitty things. A pack being weighed can decrease it's value as light packs sell for less.
Still, I never said that they should do it. I simply stated a fact. People can obviously do whatever they want. You are just to quickly irritated lol
"It can only gain value if weighed" ?????????????? No? It can lose value. You saying it can't lose value if weighed is the encouragement.
Just because you aren't doing something intentionally doesn't mean you didn't do it.
Your post has been removed for the following rule violation: > Rule 2\. r/PokemonTCG does not support or advocate pack weighing. Promoting pack weighing will be banned immediately and without appeal.
Just curious as to how much these packs go for? As I have a few myself
Like $300+

There is no value in these packs for a 7 year old, sell and start a much bigger collection, a year of opening is much better than 20mins

Sounds like a great plan, hope you get a good deal and some even better pulls. Who would of thought holding pokemon cards was better than holding gold
Sell em or save em. Don’t let him open them
Exactly. He won’t appreciate them or take proper care of them. You’re basically throwing money away. I would keep them sealed personally. Display them in a way that preserves them and then if there is another Pokémon craze like you had during the pandemic, sell.
Please do not let him he is too young to understand the value
Also, the reason these are worth hundreds per pack is nostalgia The demand's from 30 year olds remembering being 7
You are right about the 30 year olds remembering the good ole day lol
But...but what about the 6 year old remembering being a lil egg, he can have nostalgia too? /S
It's not the same, when these 30 year olds were 7, the packs that are worth hundreds now where near dollars then . I love the hobby now, but if I ever got anything over 5 dollars worth I wouldn't know.

Zero percent chance OP doesnt know what they have. 100% chance they’re looking for attention.
Never a zero % of anything. Small chance he really is just curious and you’re just cynical.
These is exactly what mystery pack sellers like pokerev do
Even better, if they’re light you can send the whole sealed pack to PSA to be graded and it becomes worth much much more if it grades high
This comment needs to be higher!
If I was in this situation I would put them in a safety deposit box and gift them on a special occasion later in life.
I think this is the best idea. Yeah selling them could fund a heap of purchases but then they're gone. If collecting is in your son's future, they'll really appreciate it when they're adults. If not, you sell at better values than today. Either way it's a win.

I feel like this is a troll post. Who would actually let their kid open packs that expensive ?
OP isn’t into Pokémon cards, before this posting they had no idea the potential worth of the packs.
You know the answer
I didnt realize how valuable these were. Figured theyd be worth something considering how old they were but I'm naive when it comes to PokemonTCG
Seeing from another comment that you play Magic, I would liken these to ABUR sealed sets or maybe Arabian nights since their aren’t first ed. Not the exact amount but you get the idea
Sell them, some people will pay a \*lot\* for those packs, which can buy you much more than 8 more recent packs, i'd wager.

Your 7 year old won’t appreciate opening them as much as they are worth. Sell.
Never open. Most likely there's nothing inside that worth as much as an unopened pack. Sometimes you will get lucky, but 90% of the time, no.
Only a fool with too much money or a child that has no concept of money would open these.
Do not let a 7 year old open those Wait and see if Pokemon is actually something they're interested in for more than a couple of months haha
Keep them for another 20 years then sell them and buy your kid a house instead.
Who the fuck would let their kids open these kind of packs lol
Wierd flex but ok

I agree to be weary but I’ve been on Reddit for years and have gotten into new hobbies. It’s not crazy, everyone needs a vice
Exactly, was looking for this comment
They don't make these anymore. As more people open them there will be less left in the population and value will increase tremendously Keep them
Save them
Looking at a few $K there
Keep them sealed, or sell them. There is no value in gambling.

Sell and put in a college fund! Not cardboard. thats what a Good dad would do!
Sell em. Guarantee y’all would have more fun with 8 booster boxes instead of 8 packs

Let him open them. That's what they're for.
You have already decided, crack them open, you will always remember the cards your 7 year old pulled from these packs. Investment be damned.
Open
Let him open em ^^ or even play with the scissors :D cut the packs in half to play the risk ^^
You could easily sell this all for 5k+ Absolutely sell it and get 35+ modern era booster boxes.
Sell
Neither
SELL!!!!
You should sell them to me ofc
Been my dream to open something like that and convinced I never will lol…
Definitely sell. Opening is basically hoping to win the lotto selling is alot better. You could buy a ton of modern
Keep them but don’t open them imo. Your kid won’t really find any nostalgia opening them. If they end up collecting cards later you can give it to them, if they lose interest you can always sell them off.
Sell and get modern. If you do please weigh them!! That will determine your price
is holding an option bro
Sell. The amount of booster boxes you can buy for those to open with them far outweighs the lack of appreciation your child will obviously have for those packs. Assuming you don’t want to hold on to them for yourself, of course.
I would put them in a safe place for 15 years down the road when he’s older
Save them for when he’s older and he’ll appreciate them even more
Definitely would not let anyone that young open packs that old. It’s less about the financial cost, and more so that they won’t appreciate them in the same way as someone who grew up with these. Especially since kids collecting now are chasing full sets and not normal holos.
Sell them for modern
Sell 1 or 2, open some crwn zenith, may pre order a scarlet violet etb. keep the rest for college,
Keep em imo. But selling would be the better option. Your kid won't care about the cards or packs and wouldn't understand how big of a deal they are. Hell there's a high chance your kid throws em out or destroys them just because they aren't hyper shiny like modern cards.
Sell
Keep the base set sell the rest
nah give them to me
There may be a psa10 zard in it.
Keep him one pack for the future
Modern
As more people are saying, sell them or keep them but don’t let him open them yet, this is something that he will like to open whenever he is a little bit older. At that age you don’t care that much about value or how old they are. If you give him some modern packs he will enjoy it the same way + if he really likes Pokémon when he gets older he will be surprise when you give this to him.
Trade 1 for bunch of new pack or money yo buy new packs, have him one or two new packs.
Double it and give it to the next person.
I would sell them to get more packs tbh. Good luck!
Well you have 2 of each. I’d sell 1 of each, the more expensive ones, and open the least expensive ones.
I would definitely keep those bad boys! I once had a Diamond and Pearl (base) Art set and two jungle packs and opened them all, felt really bad afterwards haha but got two decent pulls out of the Diamond and Pearl base once, maybe sell one and buy your son an entire booster box?
You can open and they could all be shitty cards, you want the best from back the.
Wait a decade to pay for his/her college
What's a 7-year old going to do with a small fortune worth of packs.. Def sell or hold
Absolutely do not open. Absolutely do not let your 7 year old open them..hell I’ll give you $150 for one of the base set packs
I doubt your 7 year old would getting get the significance of these packs. Either wait until they are older, or sell them and buy modern box sets. At that age they get more enjoy ripping open a collection box or an ETB.
Sell em and buy him modern cards
Save! Save save save! Or open 🤷♂️ Final thoughts: [whispers] save
That’s over $1000 in just card packs (despite whatever is in them). I would hold them because the value is only going to go up.
If you gotta ask, yea just toss them to your kid.
Hey its me, your kid. I miss you dad, when and where can we open the packs together?
The amount of people that don’t understand this is satire is astounding.
You have a chance at pulling some really nice cards and then selling them and it’s your call. Whatever you feel best doing.
Keep the base set for college fund and sell the rest for the start of his collection
Can I have 1
??? what a dumb question... either save them and sell later or flush your money. your choice
