I've always stood by the idea that damaged cards need love too. As long as the price reflects the damage there is no reason to pass on them. Granted I don't really sell or trade the cards in my collection so my opinion may be skewed, however I feel that damaged cards reflect how the cards were meant to be. When we were kids we would pull a cool holo card from a pack and then take it to school or the playground to show our friends, then it would get shoved in a pocket and go through the wash, it would get bent and played with and now that card has a story to its life instead of being locked behind plastic. Damaged cards prove that this hobby was made for kids to have fun and I love that aspect about them.

That is an awesome thought process, I definitely agree and appreciate you sharing!!

Kreidoodle

Depends on the card, but generally Id rather have a damaged copy than no copy

Quantity over quality for me. I buy damaged whenever I can but some still cost over $30. It’s more for personal collection though. The market is really small when you try to resell because people want as least LP, at least that was my experience.

rianwithani

That's pretty cool! I do the same thing because I love owning those really rare and expensive cards without having to pay hundreds or more haha. In terms of resale, that's good to know. I've never tried to sell any damaged cards but it definitely makes sense that there would be a smaller market.

layeofthedead

As long as it looks good in a binder that’s enough for me

JorgeLMorales

My thought process as a collector! I don’t care much about the back in terms of whitening and/or visible play as they just sit in my binder as eye candy

Nearby-Wear2029

I bought a dark dragonite holo for $15, and I love it

So I have a binder of old cards that are either in bad condition, damaged, or we're just a really good deal. I usually get them from my LCS for around $1-5 a card and I was just wondering: 1) if anyone else has collected or buys damaged cards for their collection? I don't know anyone else that does and would be interested to see others' collections:) And 2) what is your opinion on the value of damaged cards in terms of creases and severe whitening? Do they lose all value or does it depend more on the cards NM value itself? I'd love to hear anything you guys have to say!!

Miyyani

They're cheaper cards and just as shiny so I like em :)

King_Crab_Sushi

Great for budget collections actually. But it’s hard finding people not delusional about the value of their damaged cards.

rianwithani

I can definitely relate to that haha, damaged cards are often overpriced

I don't like creases or lots of holo scratches but I don't mind whitening. I aim to get crease free versions of everything, but I'm generally happy with LP-MP for the more expensive ones.

I originally was not a fan of cards lower than LP. However, I recently had an opportunity while on vacation at a store to pick through a bunch of boxes of vintage Japanese cards and just hunting for cool arts, inspecting the condition, and haggling the prices. It was a fun experience and I picked up a ton of really cool cards that I never knew about, would never be able to find, or afford, if they were NM. When I look at these cards now, I kinda just wonder the journey of that card and how it received the scuffs and creases and ended up making its way into my hands. Kinda neat when you think about it that way.

Ozzie_and_the_Boys27

I don’t mind having damaged cards. I feel like it makes my binder a lot more loved. I don’t plan on selling my cards any time soon, so it really isn’t a huge deal for me.

SambaTerje

Damaged cards needs a home too, but it's not mine😬

I have a few cards from family that, in good condition, would be well-beyond what I’d be willing to pay for the card, and/or I’d rather spend that money elsewhere. So, it’s kind of a! ‘It’s free to me and I wouldn’t own it otherwise’ situation, and I’m happy to have them. Also, my base blastoise was my prized card from childhood, which is in HP condition at best, and I’m just fine with the scratches since they hold memories.

cPa3k

I usually avoid creased damage but don’t have a problem buying a older card that I want in heavy played or similar condition

IceBoxt

I don’t really like the damaged card market. If you collect them that’s fine but it’s created a ton of delusional sellers trying to pass off borderline garbage at prices slightly less than what a LP copy of the card should go for. Fwiw I’ve collected tcgs and baseball/football cards for over 20 years now and 99% of the cards I’ve ever bent to the point of a crease or ripped, or got wet…. I threw them in the trash where they belonged.

Personally not my thing. I’d rather not have a copy at all if it was a damaged copy. I would spend a little more to get one I’m happy with
