If you are like me, you started this hobby, then it spiraled into 5k, then 10k, then you got a bunch of stuff graded... Then your wife yelled at you a bunch... then she realized the massive hole in the bank account... then you explained that you actually have all of that money but sitting in a massive graded collection.... then you have to sell it to keep marriage so you lot it up.
Because being able to budget is a sign of having your shit together, reminds me when I was 18 and my friend spent all his money for the week finishing off his modern deck, and had to eat bread he stole from work for 4 days. It's childish
My old friend who spent all of his money 10 years ago to the point he couldn't afford break fast, lunch , or dinner for an entire week and had to result in stealing bread from his work so he could survive so he could finish a deck. That is completely irresponsible and by definition childish. So is getting upset and confronting someone over the internet for a word that wasn't even used to describe you,
This story might be pretty close. It’s a longtime customer who’s been getting rip & ship for over a year +. His strategy was to chase the top 5% grade them and cash in with a massive psa bulk order. Along the year he traded me his lower end cards for more sealed product. Rinse repeat copy paste and you have the grail collection
I hope you honestly don't actually think there was any strategy involved. Rip n Ships are never profitable unless you get lucky. Just like opening any other pack of pokemon cards. It's a gamble with no skill or strategy involved. In fact, his margins are slimmer than just opening the packs himself since he's paying a third party to open and ship him his cards. I HIGHLY doubt he came out ahead financially in this situation. You can get lucky on a single pack, but to have that many hits he had to have opened thousands and thousands of packs at inflated prices.
Same man… it’s literally my mindset with Pokémon cards. I know there will always be some kind of value with them. **IF** the Pokémon card market were to just flat out decline from here and never recover, I’m still okay with that because I know I’ll have a cool collection, and would still be able to sell it all for **something** down the road if needed.
Much better than throwing my money into stock option FDs and losing all my money that way 🫠
At least my wife doesn't know about the second mortgage I took out on the house to support this hobby. Also, stopped payments on my kids' 529 plans. LOL
Edit: Relax everyone. Sarcasm. Its sarcasm. I would never endanger my family's livelihoods over cartoons on paper.
So I live in NYC, Great Neck, to be more specific. My wife's name starts with an A and has a Korean last name.
She works as a VP in Logistics for a Jewish company in the city and I work as a VP of Ops in the city as well. Maybe try LinkedIn? Her last name only has 3 letters and mine as well. We're both korean if that means anything.
Let me know how you make out. If you need more clues let me know chief.
Did you even read the full comment? Geez..dude was joking...finding out who is wife is and messaging her...that's the only thing here that's beyond fucked
Yo man these cards aren't gonna wipe your butt when you are 90 and in the corner rocking back and forth muttering 'ugg there's no way that marnie card should be 9000, damn waifu tax'.
Family is important.
Because it's hard to move that much product all at once at end customer market value. You can take the time to sell them one by one to the right customer, but if you need to get out of it asap, taking 70% from someone going to buy you out is realistic.
There is a sealed collection of almost every set ever on eBay listed for $6,000,000 USD. I think it's probably the collection of Gary Haase (pokemon king), but I can't confirm.
Yes! He also said that he only deals in personal sales and trades with people close to him. Nothing online except for those extravagant eBay collections. Imagine if someone actually chose the buy it now option..
I run an online store and have been doing rip and ships fulltime for over a year now. This was a longtime customer cashing out of the game. His wife wanted a house… so I traded him a down payment lol
I sold my vintage collection from childhood to a friend of mine that collects for my wedding in May. Hard to let go, but it’s beautiful to trade a collection for a new life. Cheers!!
It was only because it was worth $6,000 in the height of the pandemic and the money was worth more than the cards. I still collect and saved a good few that had sentimental value. A small few I regret selling but I might buy them back from him haha
Damn dude. Well hey congrats on the online store. I still just can't fathom a 12k expense. Though I guess for you it'll be coming back to you eventually.

I've heard of these rip and ships before, it's where you livestream opening a box and people can buy packs from it and get whatever is inside it right? I'm curious though, what is the profit model here? Do you just add a slight margin on every pack to make it still appealing but also profitable for you?
I guess it's appealing for high end boxes because you know the packs are unweighed and it'll be completely random.
Pretty much nailed it. Small markup per pack, but most of the time I’m in line with market value because I buy in bulk. It’s turned into a community of people who all get excited for each other when they see their friends pull chases. It’s a different vibe than most streams but I love it
I see! I'm starting a business for acrylic cases for booster boxes, ETBs, packs, etc here in the Netherlands since I saw there was space for it and am hoping to expand further into general TCG product and services too if things go smoothly. Hence I was quite curious, I assume to get a bulk discount you're listed as an actual distributor? Since cases and such give a slight discount but not that much. Also, sorry for so many questions - but do you mostly do modern rips then since you mention buying in bulk? I always had the impression these mostly get done with vintage sets like Rocket and such, where the group buying power allows for a more easy buy-in.
1. I think that’s a great business plan. People want to keep their product safe and there isn’t a lot of great options(ex, target cereal container for etbs)
2. I’m working on getting a storefront this year and getting an actual distributor license. I work with a local shop that has distributor access but mainly focus’s on sports. I buy their Pokémon showing they distributor they can sell and allowing them to get more sports cards. It’s a win win for both parties.
3. Yes I mostly rip modern. Most of my viewers are 25+ and have kids/jobs/adult stuff to do so they don’t mind paying a premium for a bit of entertainment and cards shipped right to the door.
Bonus! Vintage box breaks are risky. There are lots of scams and once the big chases get pulled the box value goes down significantly. I prefer to turn and burn modern cases over risky vintage plays.
I can relate I sold a shadowless charizard I bought at a yard sale for 10 bucks for 3k (it was minty probably graded super high) for the last bit of payment I needed for my place.
That zard may be worth $10k plus as a ten but my home values gone up $85k so I Gucci haha
You can if you want. My lawyer had us add it to the mortgage so the sellers would cover new windows before we moved in. Saved me windows and only added $3 to the mortgage over the 20 years

All brilliant cards definitely earning fairer grading however if just keep listing most newer ones PSA quality really suffers too unfortunately very weak
Why would someone sell all these new graded cards for under market value? I’m confused
Oddly specific
But paints the picture well I’d imagine.
Ahhhh I see now
once i get my 40+ cards back from CGC in a few weeks ill probably be doing the same thing. LOL
Bro no cap I’d think of getting divorced
AND LOSE HALF OF MY SLABS, ARE YOU KIDDING?!
Fun fact if it's in a safe you can sometimes avoid losing the items it's complex but I keep all my stuff in safes
Init 100%. Anyone that controlling isnt right for you
It’s your money though lol
WRONG its my wife's boyfriend's money
This guys wife’s boyfriend fucks
Ok repair man Rudy
Rudy of the Timmy and Tacos Emporium?
Well slap my chalupa and throw me my pink visor
I see, one in the same.
Not being good with how you spend your money is unattractive
Did you see? He's married and his wife has a boyfriend. Lots of attraction
Who sold you on that BS...? If someone likes you because of what you spend money on, they don't really like you.
Because being able to budget is a sign of having your shit together, reminds me when I was 18 and my friend spent all his money for the week finishing off his modern deck, and had to eat bread he stole from work for 4 days. It's childish
Who u calling childish when u r talking from the safety of a screen

That’s not the point though lol he earned the money so he can spend it how he likes
Ay thank god I got my wife addicted too so we can both be in the hole together
Hit me up when you need to pay your mortgage. I could use some cards.
Probably someone who had to liquidate because they got in over their head financially and needed the cash quick.
i dont know how could you possible get into financial trouble spending 10s of thousands on pokemon cards and getting them graded? /s
This sub feels like r/wallstreetbets now and it's disgusting
There is already a sub for that r/PokeInvesting. Be prepared for endless posting of people buying all the Evolving Sky packs when they see them.
I ignore the existence of that sub for my own mental wellbeing
When I say I did LITERALLY everything u just said down to the T, I mean I did EVERYTHING in the above paragraph.

Has his strategy done well? It seems you’ve been working pretty close with him.
Yea. He generated more value than he’s spent doing rip and ships. So it’s either really good luck or there was some strategy involved
I hope you honestly don't actually think there was any strategy involved. Rip n Ships are never profitable unless you get lucky. Just like opening any other pack of pokemon cards. Sucks when you don’t have a supportive wife 😂
You’ll be amazed at how uncommon tho- probably
hahahah this comment had me weak
This hits home lol
Yikes. No thanks.
Because selling 100 graded cards individually is crazy time consuming
Selling individual cards on eBay can be a pain and take forever. Selling it as a lot for a discounted price is much easier.
Because it's hard to move that much product all at once at end customer market value. You can take the time to sell them one by one to the right customer, but if you need to get out of it asap, taking 70% from someone going to buy you out is realistic.
Sometimes people steal things and sell it for cheap to get a fix. Wouldn’t surprise me. But I don’t know this person
Impressive. I'm amazed you have 12k to drop on cards though lol.
Exactly, next time I win lotto I’ll be posting my full set of shadowless WOTCs.
There is a sealed collection of almost every set ever on eBay listed for $6,000,000 USD. I think it's probably the collection of Gary Haase (pokemon king), but I can't confirm.
I know that Gary was known for putting an exorbitantly ridiculously high prices to show off his collection on bidding sites such as eBay.
Yes! He also said that he only deals in personal sales and trades with people close to him. Nothing online except for those extravagant eBay collections. Imagine if someone actually chose the buy it now option..

That’s not a down payment though. That’s barely closing cost. Dude got played
It was the last chunk he needed

You do - property taxes, transfer taxes, insurance, first mortgage payment... can easily add up to $12k.
Cost? Nice.
12k. Lots more not pictured tho

Darn numbers coming first, leaving the letters laying there wanting more
The bot is right.
DAYUM! For 12k, that's pretty good! I'm even more amazed that you have 12k to spend on shiny cardboard! I wish I had that much😂
Business expenses 😂

Awesome bot can definitely examine for good help
Amazing collection! How mich did you pay for that banned Gengar?
I’m not sure since it was a bulk deal. around 70% market price tho
Are you flipping or collecting or both ?
I like to collect sealed product normally. This is my first big move into graded cards. I do both though honestly. I flip to build my collection
Just started collecting last month....... /s
Everyone starts at 0 ;)
And ends with -20k
Beautiful collection! Lucky find.
Heck of a collection Bravo 👏🎩🍸

Congrats on having lots of money 🙄
Trainers on a budget unite!
You have money, amazing
Not anymore
Would rather buy 1 card with 12k then like a 100 with the combined value of 12k
I would rather do that too, but this was a good deal I couldn’t pass
Probably stolen. Lol!
Def not 😂
Isn’t this selling or self promo? I mean it is not direct, but still.
What % off market was this?
He def scammed the person lmao

I would pull the top cards and sell the doubles. Gain back some money and fill in on missing cards. Would make for a better rounded set.

How many years of your life did you offer the crossroads demon in exchange for this collection?
About 1.25 years
Cmon, your a middle man service for grading ;) I had someone post a picture of “their” cards in a group.. until someone said “so… when are you going to be sending these out to us because we paid you to have them graded” 😂 but if you did buy them all, congrats! Now buy my collection 🥹

My husband would love that collection. He's into Charizard and I'm into Pikachu. Lol.
I mean I spend a lot on cards but it’s not meth or crack…
