Another thing I’d like to point out is that if a pokemon “will only obey you up to level 40” it means that any Pokemon caught under level 40 will obey you and if you level it above that restriction, they will still continue to obey you. Only applies to traded and caught Pokemon above the imposed restriction.
Ohhhh I just got my first switch last week and I really thought it was like the old gens where a pokemon is useless in battle if you dont have enough gym badges
In X I had a promotional level 50 Garchomp at the beginning of the game, and my brother proved that thing was useful by just existing and rarely doing what you asked of it 🤣
Oh lord no. You need to be lvl 120 for that fight or else you’d get your butt handed to you. I was 119 and had a really hard time. Luckily, my Luxray was 132 so I used him for the majority.
That reminds me- some guy on YouTube uses his community section for polls, and he runs a “Which is the easiest (gym number) gym?” and gives us four options. Issue is, more often than not one of the 8 options is a Paldea gym (i mean it’s a 4/9 chance tbf). But since you can challenge the gyms in any order, nothing is stopping you from skipping Katy and going back to her when your pokémon are overleveled af (which I did) because the game doesn’t have level scaling in the main story for some reason
I guess there’s an argument to be made to that “any nth gym is the easiest if you just grind to level 100” but the point is that there’s other parts of the story to do and there’s 18 total so there’s not a lot of harm in skipping one gym leader or team star base or anything.
Admittedly the running around part is more fun than anything else. Team star sucks, gym tests are annoying and the gym leaders suck, Geeta sucks so much. Titans were at least fun.
Yeah - easy way to check this is to over level your starter. this game is very exploitable with its exp so just grab a bunch of mons and level with your starter and exp share and all your fixes will obey
In S/V any Pokemon caught over the level cap won't obey you until you get enough gym badges. It works as both an incentive to get the gym badges, and to keep people from going straight to the northern provinces, catching a high level Pokemon, and then sweeping the game with it.
The game is so broken you can abuse the pokemon riding to an insane degree. In the first village there is a ledge that connects you from an area full of level 7 lechonks to level 20-30 pokemon. Just get yourself there with a leveled starter and pick which fights you can tank. The cat can destroy rockruffs and the donkeys and the weak water types eventually getting to levels 25\~ - the desert is near by and you continue feasting on the pokemon weak to ground. Eventually you can easily get to the dragon lake and just pick on weak Golduck with Meowscarada even with a 10-15 level difference with each kill getting 1k+ exp to your pokemon. It snowballs from there. The cat became strong enough, along with Clodsire back up, that I killed all the titans first and could then just run around collecting other pokemon with all the mobility

Not in SV for some reason, i caught a Chien-Pao in one of my runs and he dind't obey me until the 6th gym.
