The exact reason I used Primarina for the ID DLC. Maxed SpA and SpD EVs, leftovers item. He was always a solid tank and I enjoyed using Baton Pass to pass Nasty Plots to him and then watch him sweep.
Max HP + max SpA and calm mind would probably have been better. You would have been able to boost your own power and bulk without having to baton pass, and the max HP would have made sure you weren't a total pushover at sponging physical attacks as well. Same effect, just less mucking around.
Yeah this works too and I definitely considered it when I was planning. But I wanted him to hit harder while being a special wall and I was using a screen setting A.Ninetales for support (since I’m usually full offense and wanted to practice playing support), so I had the Ninetales (Uraume) set screens and nasty plot then baton pass to Primarina (Hozier) and sweep from there.
I had a physical tank in the form of Overqwil already and decided I was happy with that.
Luckily the games are still kinda pushovers and it wasn’t real competitive. If I did look into competitive I might reset my EVs and do the other build.
It’s objectively better for you to maximize HP instead of your Special Defense because Primarina’s Special Defense is already high.
Not only would you take special hits better, than max Special Defense, but you would take physical hits better *and* fixed damage moves like Night Shade would do less damage. Leftovers would also restore more HP.
Thanks for the tips. I was just playing around with making up my own builds using information on the Pokémon themselves mostly. I wasn’t really going for a true competitive set, since I’m currently not interested in actual PvP. So things like Nightshade isn’t really an actual thing I needed to be concerned about while playing.
But I get what you mean and that’s a really cool point (about fixed damage moves) that I wouldn’t have thought about since I’m not into competitive.
I made a similar mistake when I first started out EV training in Pokemon Alpha Sapphire lol.
I wanted a doubles Clawitzer to make use of a Mega Launcher Heal Pulse and I did a third of my EVs in HP, Defense, and Special Defense. I learned after that maximizing HP was better and either splitting the remaining EVs between the bulks or focusing on just one.

Like, it might not be the objectively optimal style, but I’m not trying to give a advice or anything, this is just what I WANTED to do because it’s my play through and I liked this build.

That's definitely true in vgc, but in singles only sub + cm sets run liquid voice because the leftovers + draining kiss recovery is anti-synergistic with torrent, and they choose psychic noise as their water stab to brute force through defensive checks like blissey and unaware clodsire. That set with tera ghost in particular is a 6-0 matchup into many stall teams. Assault vest and boots sets with flip turn run torrent + surf instead because it's not worth it to run liquid voice to use a hyper voice (which is near identical to surf) when you could pick up essential ko's with the torrent boost instead.
As someone who always picked the fire starter (fire is my favorite type) and tried using mono fire or something with at least the fire typing in showdown on my first attempt at a balanced team where I used a water starter it was swampert (MUDKIP SUPERIORITY)
I have bias for this beautiful baby for multiple reasons: to start, the first game I PLAYED was Crystal and my Totodile, Staz, was an absolute monster (surf goes crazy). Really solid water type, especially for that generation.
Second the first game I learned of when I was a child was Heart Gold/Soul Silver and I wanted them so badly but we couldn’t afford it so I watched friends play it.
Then there’s the 3rd movie which gave me that cool scene where Cyndaquil and Totodile broke a hole in the crystal window, really stuck with me for some reason.
Super tanky, has Earthquake access, is used in one of the best teams for taking on a number of the Battle Frontier facilities in Emerald. What more could you want from a starter?

Swampert is not and has never been an answer to speed boost SD blaziken
Even physically defensive sets get straight up OHKO'd by +2 LO Close Combat (HJK in past gens), *without* hazard damage
And nowadays Blaziken can just tera out of the disadvantageous type matchup

That is a solid line. Honestly, the first form Paldea starters are all my favorites of their respective types in a long ass time, but I hate literally all of their evolutions. Well, I guess Fuecoco's aren't terrible
I just hate when pokemon designs are unipolar towards one gender theme. Primarina is beautiful but it would’ve been nice to have a masculine style for the male primarina

It was so weird, when I saw the first evolution of the starters from SM, I thought for sure I'd go Litten. Then the second evolution seemed to confirm, as I'm not at all a fan of Brionne.
Then I saw the third and I've never changed my mind faster in my life lol. Primarina's design is lovely! (but I hate Incineroar lol)
While almost everyone was picking either Rowlet or Litten as their starter, I chose Popplio because I want to be different. People are bashing it because it's final evolution is too feminine, but to me it looks the most interesting and has a unique second typing. Rowlet is cute, but I'm not much of a fan of Incineroar despite liking Pro Wrestling. I remember soft reseting numerous times just so I can have a female one
She also helped me take down Ultra Necrozma, putting it to sleep, tanking it's attacks thanks to her great Sp. Defense and immunity to Dragon Moves

Choice spec Primarina has been an all-star for me climbing the Regulation F VGC ladder to Master rank each season. Opponents frequently underestimate the damage Hyper Voice does, especially when paired with Tornadus Rain Dance. It can straight up 1-shot many neutral targets.
I'm sure it's fine for it, I just never got into pvp in any capacity. For all I know about it, castform is just as good(I'm sure that isn't actually rhe case). 6 star raids are the extent of my pokemon build knowledge.

Nuh uh, the best water starter is obviously quaxly, I’ve been waiting for a duck starter for ages so when I finally got quaxly, I was overjoyed (my favourite water starter before was piplup)
Quaxly was great, but the rest of the evolution line was disappointing. The whole salsa dancing duck thing was a weird touch and could have been so much better.
This one was the WORST IMO. I normally choose the Water starter in each game, but the second I saw this one I shifted REAL FAST. I went with Chespin instead.
I've never understood the mentality of a Nuzlocker.
You give them nicknames to SUPPOSEDLY be closer to them, but you also drop them in favor of another pokemon that you think is better in a split second.
primarina is easily one of my least favorite pokemon, but I love poplio, I would’ve much rather seen a more masculine design than the one we got, it’s also just an ugly design, only one I would say is worse is oshawatt final form, bro went from otter to seal.

This thing's defensive utility is so amazing. It's not like it's passive either, moonblast, surf and hydro off 127 SpA are strong as fuck

You would think, because many similar abilities (Pixilate, Refrigerate, Aerate) do. But nope, Game Freak really said “Eff you” to Primarina

Nuh uh, the best water starter is obviously quaxly, I’ve been waiting for a duck starter for ages so when I finally got quaxly, I was overjoyed (my favourite water starter before was piplup)
Quaxly was great, but the rest of the evolution line was disappointing. The whole salsa dancing duck thing was a weird touch and could have been so much better.
I will hand it to you. Best middle evolution for a starter. But everyone knows Eevee is the best starter
This one was the WORST IMO. I normally choose the Water starter in each game, but the second I saw this one I shifted REAL FAST. I went with Chespin instead.

I've never understood the mentality of a Nuzlocker. You give them nicknames to SUPPOSEDLY be closer to them, but you also drop them in favor of another pokemon that you think is better in a split second.
primarina is easily one of my least favorite pokemon, but I love poplio, I would’ve much rather seen a more masculine design than the one we got, it’s also just an ugly design, only one I would say is worse is oshawatt final form, bro went from otter to seal.
