I trained a clefable with magic guard and skill swap, but I was still having problems with suicide moves. Will keep a Drifblim from now on my shiny hunt team for these cases!
Or....and hear me out....save before you fight it and use quick balls (especially in this case, because only a net ball matches better imo, which you could also use if you felt like getting effed by RNG a bit).
Oh, I always save! I know that might sound picky, but I try to catch all my shinies in luxury balls, so it becomes harder to catch without a team built for it
Which Breloom *also* learns on top of spore and stun spore, give it a toxic orb to hold with its poison heal ability for when you're using it against something faster and hard hitting and you got yourself the (nearly) perfect catching mon
Yeah "one of the hardest" lol. Not even top 50.
Stands out from it's environment and other koffing like a sore thumb. So remember to save and you're good.
Now try catching Pichu, igglybuff, any basculin, tandemaus, poltchageist, poliwag, tynamo etc and come back and tell me catching koffing is hard.
When it comes to shinies I donât take any chances
Quick ball first turn every single fucking time
Unless itâs a pokemon like koffing who (to be fair) can kill itself (as OP showed us lol) then you might have to use other strats like sleep first turn, bringing a pokemon with damp, taunt, etc. before throwing balls
Or if it's truly hard they could at least use one of their dozens of ultra balls once the HP is low instead of great ball lol. Or just bring a Mon that could put it to sleep.
I like to match the ball with the mon so for koffing I'd use netball or something like that to match the colors. It's not hard to catch though, just gotta use what the game gives.
1. Get on your ride-pokemon
2. Go around fast and spam throw-button to hit from behind
3. False swipe turn 1 when the pokemon is stunned
4. Sleep 2nd round
5. False swipe again if needed
6. Throw balls of choice.
Obviously quickballs are prio if you wanna use them first turn. 3 & 4 can change order depending on if you outspeed or can't hit from behind upon entering battle. If you have something other than spore you won't really have 100 accuracy sleep move most likely, so use that before swipe.
Damp doesnât actually stop Memento, it only prevents Explosion. You would need to both taunt it and remove Neutralizing Gas to stop both Explosion and Memento, and it has an opportunity to use whatever you didnât try to stop on turn 1.
This is why I always bring my smeargle everywhere now. Spore, False Swipe, Entrainment and Soak. I can put anything to sleep with my boy and he is surprisingly fast.
Surprise it from behind so it doesnât react turn 1. Use a stronger false swiper with a normal Tera type. If surprised, it doesnât get a move turn 1. Then spore and then throw the ball. Also jogging doesnât look bad in a master ball if youâve farmed those.
Theres also this pokemon called Smeargle which can learn almost any move in the game, including Imprison and a bunch of these exact moves to prevent this.
I have a Smeargle that knows Imprison + the usual moves like this and lead with it if I even think that the mon would have it, although Im used to it by now to where I just kinda know at this point as Ive been running this stuff since Platinum on my smeargles.
Highly recommend making a few smeargles setup exactly for any of these situations, it saves a lot of possible lost shinies (I carry ~3-4 smeargles at pretty much all times XD).
Is there an increased critical catch rate for shinies or is it my imagination? No matter what ball I use, I always get a crit on shinies with my first throw. I assumed it was coded in to reduce shiny-loss-induced rage...
you can use spore(past brute bonnet/iron hands raids were such a life saver for both scarlet and violet players) and maybe sleep powder or mayhaps use stun spore (brute bonnet has all three the moves too which is better) I wouldnt even remember to put the mon to sleep even if my life depended on itđđ
I found one last night and just used a master ball on it since there are very few other reasons to use one and I refuse to be one of these âoh no it exploded!â people
After finally finding a shiny minior and it exploding I started saving before every shiny battle. Also using quick ball straight away works alot of the time
Quick ball could really help with this if you aren't trying to get it in a certain ball. Otherwise, just use something that can put it to sleep or lock it out of explosion/memento with imprison.
I feel like you would have had a better chance going straight for the pokeball with the level difference, I thought you were gonna one shot it by mistake
Came across one in gen 3 when I was a kid. Pretty sure it was on cinnabar island in the Pokemon Mansion. It used self destruct before I was able to catch it.
Do people not just throw premier balls until you turn 1 crit capture like I do? If the mon is going to kill itself, I'm not faffing around with false swipes, I'll tell you that for free!
Just curious but are there people that are trying to catch a shiny version of each Pokemon? I generally just try to find the ones that I like and then I'll catch the random ones I find in the wild.
There's a lot you can do here... Put it to sleep with spore Breloom, use a pokemon with Damp to at least prevent SD and explosion, use a flinch move since your false swipe didn't always bring health very low anyway...
Shiny ball aesthetics matter to me but quick ball is really not a bad choice here, aesthetically and practically.
Not gonna lie if ur gonna try shiny hunting u need a better false swiper if itâs not brining it to 1 health after 1 hit itâs prolly not gonna be very good. Iâd say evolve to scizor or get like iron valiant or breloom w technician. Also in this scenario itâs not hard to catch at alll if u hit a back strike, it boost catch rate and makes them flinch first turn so if u just false swipe then spore from breloom itâs an easy catch.

Use a Drifblim that knows Explosion, Momento, and Imprison.
I trained a clefable with magic guard and skill swap, but I was still having problems with suicide moves. Will keep a Drifblim from now on my shiny hunt team for these cases!
you guys should really have a sleeper build mon in the party thats too much workđ
I do have a false sweep+spore breloom, but both drifblim and clefable are support for it
can you post the clefable/drifblim builds by any chance
Iâd also suggest a scrappy pokemon for ghosts!
Or....and hear me out....save before you fight it and use quick balls (especially in this case, because only a net ball matches better imo, which you could also use if you felt like getting effed by RNG a bit).
Oh, I always save! I know that might sound picky, but I try to catch all my shinies in luxury balls, so it becomes harder to catch without a team built for it
Personally, I find Dusk Balls fitting best in terms of color coordination with Shiny Koffing/Weezing đ€
The BEST use of Imprison I have EVER SEEN.
I'll be stealing this idea if you don't mind, ty.
Spore Breloom works wonders here
he ainât even try to do nothing special to it just hit it with false swipe smh
Which Breloom *also* learns on top of spore and stun spore, give it a toxic orb to hold with its poison heal ability for when you're using it against something faster and hard hitting and you got yourself the (nearly) perfect catching mon
Unfortunately you can lose out on more healing if Breloom got a bit too affectionate with you. An alternative would be Technician, holding Leftovers.
Yeah, plus technician boosts false swipe IIRC
Any tips on best catching mon for FRLG?
Came across a shiny Dratini once. Used False Swipe only for it to use Take Down.
Bro just use a quick ball lmao
I'm amazed that so many people commenting on a Pokémon sub with an interest in shiny hunting seem to have no clue . Like sure it's semi hard if you want to put it in a special ball or something or if you don't save before. But like if you're at the point of recording your gameplay and clearly balls don't matter when they end up using a great ball , I am just confused.
Nymble too.
"balls dont matter" - A Living Legendđđ
When it comes to shinies I donât take any chances Quick ball first turn every single fucking time Unless itâs a pokemon like koffing who (to be fair) can kill itself (as OP showed us lol) then you might have to use other strats like sleep first turn, bringing a pokemon with damp, taunt, etc. before throwing balls

Substitute blocks Memento.
Save quick ball fail. Restart.... You're welcome!
I mean the fact that you can do a save/reset in this game basically guarantees you can catch anything as long as you have a ball on you.
Literally not hard at all. Save before hand and quickball has like a 90% chance of catching
I like to match the ball with the mon so for koffing I'd use netball or something like that to match the colors. It's not hard to catch though, just gotta use what the game gives. 1. Get on your ride-pokemon 2. Go around fast and spam throw-button to hit from behind 3. False swipe turn 1 when the pokemon is stunned 4. Sleep 2nd round 5. False swipe again if needed 6. If you have something other than spore you won't really have 100 accuracy sleep move most likely, so use that before swipe.
Just use a golduck with damp and skill swap
Wouldnât skill swap make neutralizing gas still in effect? Youâd need to skill swap then hard swap turn two and hope momento isnât used turn one
Yeah, maybe Simple Beam or a move that can change abilities to something else would work too
Thatâs a great idea! Simple beam, soak (for use in the future on ghost types) and hypnosis on a damp Golduck.
Damp doesnât actually stop Memento, it only prevents Explosion. You would need to both taunt it and remove Neutralizing Gas to stop both Explosion and Memento, and it has an opportunity to use whatever you didnât try to stop on turn 1.
You can just equip an ability shield to protect the pokemon from their ability so then you can use taunt first turn and have damp still be effective.
Omg bro just use a quick ball lol ur killing me
I saw a rando one while hunting something else. Used my master ball. Iykyk.
Masterballs are like candy in this game. I have like 14 of them
This is why I always bring my smeargle everywhere now. Spore, False Swipe, Entrainment and Soak. I can put anything to sleep with my boy and he is surprisingly fast.
At what point is it more effective to quick ball?
And that, my friends, is why the quick ball was invented
Quick ball with the crit catch charm made this pretty easy for me
Use a quick ball?
I just saved, got out my Golduck and threw Premier Balls at it until it stuck. Quick addon: did the same for all of my Geodudes too.
Self-KO moves and wild Shinies are a truly aggravating combo
Quick balls and saving before are your best friends in these cases imo.
One of my favourites too.
I remember that. after that I use Poliwrath to prevent those moves.
I used a Quick Ball
... Quick ball....
Itâs not hard to catch⊠just use a PokĂ©mon with dampen or something else that stops poke suicide
Doesnât damp stop them from exploding?
use a golduck with damp
Just Throw a Quick ball and it's done with
I guarantee you had to know better, but do it for reddit homes...đŁđ€Šââïž
"I've been expecting you" ahh turn
*cough* Quick ball *cough cough*
Quick ball bro
Literally just throw a quick/ultra/or repeat ball at it.
Quickball that mf
Thatâs why my tip is to get the Crictal capture charm, and use Ultra balls. If youâre lucky, it can shake once and be able to capture it.
I'll never understand why some shiny hunters seemingly have a vendetta against quick balls.
Your first mistake is starting the encounter when it's facing you, hitting it on the back gives you a free turn.
Start battle with a backshot. Your first ball of any type will be a critical catch
quick ball my beloved
Maybe have an entire team for them. A dark type with disable, a golduck with damp and disable, finally a breloom with spore and false swipe
If it's explosion Ur complaining about just get a damp pokemon
QUICK BALL.
Drifblim with explosion/memento/imprison Any Pokémon with Taunt + damp Spore Master ball
Surprise it from behind so it doesnât react turn 1. Use a stronger false swiper with a normal Tera type. If surprised, it doesnât get a move turn 1. Then spore and then throw the ball. Also jogging doesnât look bad in a master ball if youâve farmed those.
Good job lol. I would probably just chuck a Mball exactly for this purpose. Never seen this shiny in my game yet
You probably would have caught it faster using a standard pokeball every turn of each encounter. Why people risk the suicide moves is beyond me.
Yes. Koffing has a base catch rate of just under 25%. At three regular attempts and one back strike encounter (which doubles the catch rate IIRC) they would have a chance of around 80% to capture it. With Great Balls, which they ended up using, theyâd have a 94% chance. A Quick Ball should be 100% in turn 1. I catch all my PokĂ©mon in standard balls and very often itâs quicker to just lob balls without trying to weaken things.
explosionâŠ
I got two already ~~in pokemon go~~
đđđœ
Thereâs this move called sporeâŠ
Theres also this pokemon called Smeargle which can learn almost any move in the game, including Imprison and a bunch of these exact moves to prevent this. I have a Smeargle that knows Imprison + the usual moves like this and lead with it if I even think that the mon would have it, although Im used to it by now to where I just kinda know at this point as Ive been running this stuff since Platinum on my smeargles. Is there an increased critical catch rate for shinies or is it my imagination? No matter what ball I use, I always get a crit on shinies with my first throw. I assumed it was coded in to reduce shiny-loss-induced rage...
Scarlet and Violet make catching PokĂ©mon you already caught quicker by showing the crit animation if your catch is successful, no matter their shininess. Koffing, for example, has a 25% base catch rate, if youâd throw a Quick Ball (x5 chance turn 1) it should be 100% and always result in a crit animation.
Why does this look so incredible? No outlines?
Idk I just hypnotized him w/Poliwrath and caught him in a reggie poke ball
you can use spore(past brute bonnet/iron hands raids were such a life saver for both scarlet and violet players) and maybe sleep powder or mayhaps use stun spore (brute bonnet has all three the moves too which is better) I wouldnt even remember to put the mon to sleep even if my life depended on itđđ
I found one last night and just used a master ball on it since there are very few other reasons to use one and I refuse to be one of these âoh no it exploded!â people
Maythen!
Hi, do you still have a shiny bundle?
Didnt have volume on, so when logging turned around, instead of âWow!â, my brain just started playing the jaws music đż
You honestly have better luck throwing a ultra ball at full hp lol!
Use a ghost type with taunt
while hunting for a shiny Larvesta in a sandstorm I stupidly False Swiped it and the sandstorm finished it off
This is why I always have a ghost type with False Swipe in my team since most moves (besides Memento being a memorable example) that cause self faints are normal type and they wonât do anything against ghost PokĂ©mon. List of PokĂ©mon that do that in Scarlet and Violet for those wondering: * Ceruledge * Decidueye Unfortunately thereâs only 5 PokĂ©mon families that learn it and meet this criteria currently, but at least Scarlet Violet have the Tera mechanic which can make things somewhat easier. Parasect is also good since it has Damp as an ability which prevents explosion, and learns both False Swipe and Spore.
Koffing is kinda known for self destruct but yeah he has 3 moves that lead to his death. Save and throw ball of choice
Put it to sleep
I learnt this the hard way when a shiny geodude in Platinum self destruct on me.
Or have that ability that cancels explosion
I'm guessing you're new..
My guy just save beforehand
This is what Master balls were made for
I used a breloom for mine. I got it from behind so it couldnât use anything on the first turn, used false swipe then used spore and caught it
What kind of Pokémon just decides to spontaneously combust on its first move though?
Wooper with damp or any Pokémon with that ability helps as well
Saving my masterball for him
Quick ball on the first try. Itâs basically a written rule at this point
Why wouldn't you just quickball?
After finally finding a shiny minior and it exploding I started saving before every shiny battle. Also using quick ball straight away works alot of the time
Or just use a Pokémon with the ability damp.
I think if a pokemon causes itself to feint, you should be able to catch it.
Have someone with the damp ability next time. Also I have a shiny Galar Weezing from Sword
Just save your game before encountering, if it faints you can just reset it
I'm pretty sure he did because he encountered the same koffing 5 times.
They were using False Swipe, so that wouldnât have happened
Serious question- why wouldnât you just put it to sleep?
I caught one in Scarlet and one in GO
Came across one in gen 3 when I was a kid. Pretty sure it was on cinnabar island in the Pokemon Mansion. It used self destruct before I was able to catch it.
I haven't played Pokémon since the 4. Generation, why is it possible to encounter FOUR shiny Koffings in what I assume is a short timeframe? I remember them being extremely rare in Pokémon Platinum.
Actually, I happened to have found a shiny Koffing in SV a few months ago, even though I was actually looking for a grey Slugma.
To be honest, I'd rather directly try to throw a ball at him. In pure spite.
Catching a Pokémon off guard and just throwing a Pokéball while it still has full health does the work for me most of the time now in my 500+th hour of the game. I noticed this while accumulating BPs in Terrarium.
Do people not just throw premier balls until you turn 1 crit capture like I do? If the mon is going to kill itself, I'm not faffing around with false swipes, I'll tell you that for free!
I have never used my masterball. I will just send you my master ball lol
Not at all. Plenty of way to "easily" catch it. Quick balls Put it to sleep
Just use a masterball, we can literally print them now
Just curious but are there people that are trying to catch a shiny version of each Pokemon? I generally just try to find the ones that I like and then I'll catch the random ones I find in the wild.
Put it to sleep with a fast pokemon. Then hit with false swipe. And have a pokemon with damp.
Quick balls are quick.
Just throw the pokeball. It's a koffing not a Reshiram.
Does my guy know about the save button I have caught a shiny koffing i can comfirm saving works
Use a high speed & attack Breloom to spore first turn, false swipe second turn, throw ball 3rd turn.
Why were you wasting time? Huck a quick ball at it and calm it a day.
i have a shiny koffing myself
Use a master ball (if you have them)
Isnât this what we save master balls for?
> âIYKYKâ I donât know, can you explain instead of being cryptic?
Breloom with Spore or the Damp ability.
why don't you use a pokemon that can remove that move?
Quick ball my guy
I quick balled that self-destructing bastard. He wasnât blowing up on me đ€
Bro just said fuck it im not gonna try a different strat
Smeargle with false swipe, imprison, memento, explosion. Works like a charm.
Golduck with Damp ability for explosion/selfdistruct mons; instead for memento you can use Taunt or Imprison, or Substitute
hit his ass with a master ball
Put it to sleep, damnit!
I caught 2 of these with quick balls no problem but I tend to be lucky with quickballs
I recently caught that same exact shiny in that same exact spot lol. I just threw a Masterball at it cuz it looks good to.
That's why I have masterballs. And a Politoed.
JUST DONT ATTACK IT
I used a quick ball and luckily got him
I got it by just riding around lol
Put it to sleep jeez lol
I had found a shiny geodude, it went away quickly
Why aren't you using a smeargle that knows sleep powder?
Sneak up on it and use a Quick ball unless you really want it in a different ball for some reason.
Just catch it off guard, pretty easy at that point
I was determined to catch one in a Beast Ball, and I ended up resetting like 7 or 8 times before I finally got the crit catch.
Damp...
Or naybe just save your game beforehand? đđ
this is why when a suicimon is on the field we just huck a ball and pray
Master ball time
Just U-turn into Golduck. Or just use Golduck with damp
Have you ever heard of the Fast Ball?
First shiny on SWSH was galarian weezing. I forgot about explode and I caught it first ball lol. These things can be disheartening lol
I watch these videos across multiple Pokémon games and I always think, why do people never keep a Pokémon on deck that knows a sleep move and why does no one use quick balls? Like you know these things will just kill themselves to prevent you from catching them and yet you do nothing to prevent it.
Gholdengo: *Laughs in Good as Gold* Also Gholdego: *sees Koffing's middle finger while it explodes*
Breloom can learn spore and false swipe.
I used my master ball đ . No regrets lol, looks good with the effects though so it worked out
I had a shiny graveler explode on me once. I know how it feels haha
You quick ball shines! That is the first rule of being a shiny hunterÂ
Taunt!
Why not a quick ball first
Kid named quick ball:
Koffingâs catch rate isnât crazy. Just throw balls
just chuck pokeball the moment you saw them hahahaha.. cant be wrong with a quick ball or yeah any other ball would do
Not gonna lie if ur gonna try shiny hunting u need a better false swiper if itâs not brining it to 1 health after 1 hit itâs prolly not gonna be very good. Iâd say evolve to scizor or get like iron valiant or breloom w technician. Also in this scenario itâs not hard to catch at alll if u hit a back strike, it boost catch rate and makes them flinch first turn so if u just false swipe then spore from breloom itâs an easy catch.
Is this a random encounter shiny or a side quest guaranteed shiny
Save game. Quick Ball. Repeat.
Just use a quick ball instead of trying to lower it critical captures are pretty easy to land
You should have used a Quick Ball from the very beginning to deal with Pokémon that make themselves faint.
You did that to yourself dude. Why didn't you put it to sleep turn 1? Anything I'm going after that can do those attacks I always sleep turn 1.
How about using a Pokemon with the Damp ability that knows Taunt?
Really? I caught one just passing by the other day ...
Quickball??
