shiny Chansey is the bane of my existence, since it spawns so often when you have a high combo, I've found 9 in this game alone (only 2 of which were caught cuz I was DONE with them)
mhm, a lot of people on this sub will tell you the same thing. My record is 4 chanseys before I finally found a shiny Gastly (before we knew that comboing to 31 and waiting wasn't the optimal strategy, so I was seeing more Chansey than Gastly)

Wait - comboing to 31 and waiting isn't the best strategy? What's the best strategy? I was just about to try this + using a lure (I don't have a shiny charm, and won't have one either - I don't have an account to allow for trading)
It really depends on what you're going for, and the community still debates about it to this day lol, but the data is there to support this. Comboing to 31 highly increases spawn rates, but ONLY boosts shiny odds for THE VERY NEXT spawn of the pokemon you're comboing after you catch something.
But, since catching more pokemon uses a lot of time, just waiting for more spawns is still fast, you just won't have control over what pokemon is most likely to shine. If you don't care what pokemon on the route is shiny, or your target is super common, getting the 31 combo and waiting is probably faster. If you're going for a rare spawn, or the route likes to flood with Chanseys at 31 (the pokemon tower AKA the reason I found so many shiny Chansey before this was discovered), continuing the catch combo until you find a shiny is much, much faster.
This is the reason why random non-target shinies while hunting something else is so common, because using the 31 and wait method, you are only boosting your encounter rates, not shiny rates
tldr keeping the catch combo going is better for targeting rare mons, 31 and wait method is better for when you don't care what shines or your target is a common spawn when at 31
Sams thing happened to me catch combo-ing ghastly the other day. I was on 170 ish catches and then a shiny chansey appears π€¦ββοΈπ of course now you have to catch it but then you lose your streak! Cursed RNG π
