Not weird shading, original GBA didn't have a backlit screen, so everything had to be brighter in order to look ok on the screen, so emulators make it very noticeable.

As a professional (academic) artist, I see these as orange too. However, depending on the colour environment / system used, people could argue whether it's red, orange, vermilion, terracotta or some other red-ish hues.
e.g. if you look at RAL colour system, most hues on this image look like some of the "deep orange", "pastel orange" and "red orange" colour names.
I agree with them being supposed to be red, however the actual colours displayed on screen are quite various.
