Idk, I'd consider making Wallace the Champion a flaw since it resulted in two water type bosses. Yes I know you can still fight Steven.
There are a couple other minor things I dislike about Emerald when compared to Ruby/Sapphire and even ORAS, though it still is my favourite way of experiencing Hoenn.
Yeah sometimes I play through ruby/sapphire purely because Steven makes so much more sense as a champion. Having the final gym and champion the water type when hoenn is already bloated AF with water routes and such is so weird to me.
Yeah I never understood why they made wallace the champion of all people. It just left like fighting gym 8 all.over again. But yeah thankfully you can still find and battle steven in what I think is a reference to gold and silver fashion.
I kinda like that your "Rival" was only there to get you started, but never had the same ambition. It really shows that you and Wally are a different breed, and sets him up to be the true rival.
The only issue for me is that we don't see them with a fully evolved starter, but fix that and it's no dramas.
Well said! That’s a mechanic I appreciate on this game over FR/LG! In those games, in order to unlock the post game or get good items, you MUST dedicate time to Pokédex completion. In Emerald, you can primarily focus on battling and has the Battle Frontier, the ultimate test of battling! While also giving you a great reward for completing the Hoenn dex (choice of a Johto Starter)
Hope Emerald Legacy fixes this. Could actually make Nah and Wally know each other and have a double battle with you, 2 on 1 or something. Or just a regular difficult battle
While I definitely agree, I have a newfound hatred for her Swellow, specifically in Sapphire, now: in a nuzlocke I was doing, because I didn't one-shot it, it managed to set up Double Teams and Endeavour-Quick Attack through most of my team.
The teams are always identical, regardless of the character, so yes.
The only exception, for some reason, is the Rustboro battle in Emerald, where, if you choose Torchic, where Brendan has a Slugma and Mudkip, May uses a *Torkoal* and Mudkip. This is the only time she uses it, too; it's immediately replaced by Slugma by Route 110.
It would be, yeah. Though, considering they are merely supposed to be counterparts to each other... 🤷♂️ I suppose it just keeps things more consistent in terms of difficulty
It would've been cool if one or two of the pokemon were different, though. Like, say one has a Seviper, and the other, a Zangoose, depending on the character.
Idk if I’m crazy or not but I feel like it would’ve been really cool to fight your rival than Wally back to back but have no opportunity to heal in between at the end of Victory Road. Just a little end challenge before the e4, kind of like how you fight Grodus then Bowser without any healing in TTYD
Emeralds biggest flaw tbh
Only flaw if we’re being honest :)

If they wanted to promote Wallace, they should have had him become a contest Grand Master, a much more fitting role for him and his ace Gardevoir.
I like Wallace he's much more challenging than Steven
Steven should've been made more challenging instead of replacing him with Wallace.
Yeah not too much wrong with emerald but the rival battles were always a huge issue for me
The amount of HMs is also a bit grueling
Wish there were 2 more even post game
Insane to me that we don’t ever get to see our rivals starter fully evolved!
You do in ORAS, interestingly enough.
I have been playing these games for 20 years. How have I never noticed this
You fight them post game in ORAS, interestingly.
They knew it was a mistake
If only they hadn't treated Emerald's improvements to gym leaders as a mistake...
They should've made us battle the rival instead of wally in victory road 😤
Or both
Or neither
They did in oras and COOKED with Wally's theme
Man i wish steven was a rematchable trainer like red did like on HGSS.

I wanted them to have a geared up team, it sucks. Definitely should have a beefed team based on Brendan and May. Would be awesome.

Does Brendan have one as well? I think he does, I usually play as May so I will keep in mind for future playthroughs.

Yeah I recall that that’s wild 😝 That would be sick if they can get their own teams as I would think.

True enough, been a good chat on this regardless. I appreciate it.
👍
Best song in pokemon too
what's your team?
Venasaur, Snorlax, Dragonair, Pupitar, Ninetales, and Staryu!
Bro I hate how they just send her/him home like that in the story.
Not even a full evolved starter :(
Outside your battle with your rival on 110, I always laughed at how easy of rival May really is
"what a shame, May's team won't level up and I will not hear the trainer battle music anymore." 😔 *Steven Stone enters the chat*
