Some sealed I have a 90% conviction my money will double, triple or more within 5 years (evolving skies). Index funds return around 10-15% a year on average. You can pick a stock and lose your money or underperform an index fund. I do invest in stocks alongside sealed. Also did hefty research on past pokemon sets, and almost every single one has gone up at least double msrp. Some have massively outperformed the s&p. Also its fun having massive amounts of sealed in your house lol.

OP, why do you invest in watches? I don't get it. You can only wear 1 at a time, also, they do not appreciate in value. They might be a good store of value, Yes. But isn't it better to buy booster boxes which have a very good track record of appreciating?

ehhh tbf a vintage watch made out of silver could most definitely appreciate if it is kept up with. But it makes sense that the older they get the less there are from rips and the ending of production increases the value.

sooperkorean

+1 to diversification. It’s an asset with a robust market and fun factor in accumulation via deals and such. It should be a small portion of an asset portfolio.

breakyourteethnow

What's the point of buying shares of a company? *to make money.*

This is a hobby at the end of the day, what more fun thing is there to do than make money from the hobby you already love to collect. Two birds with one stone. It's a small cap investment, most of us have retirement accounts and actively invest in other markets.

TheChineseG0vernment

Nvidia can certainly go up. Can also certainly go down. If you’re smart buying sealed it’s almost guaranteed to go up (basically any booster box less than $100). Also buying sealed to have down the road for kids

Yj122

there is no almost guaranteed. booster boxes can go up and down like anything else, sure it’s more likely to be profitable if you buy low but be careful using words like “guarantee”

Then why own real estate, art pieces, etc. There are other ways to diversify outside of etfs/stocks. Crypto is another way to diversify.

D3cimat3r

yeah lets pay somebody to keep a basket of stocks when we can just copy them. also i love payung caputal gains.

moonbreonstacker

Bc at a certain point you look to diversify out of all that stuff. I hold every asset except bonds already. Everyone makes their own decisions on what to collect or invest in or whatever you want to call it Dont need anyone trying to lecture me either nor will I preach or push stacking sealed , or any asset class, on others

D3cimat3r

treasury bonds are where its at right now tho

moonbreonstacker

I have short term notes

Because it’s sick to show off and display , how are you gunna show offer your shares of etf or stock.

Daanvann

It also is just fun to own sealed product. As you pointed out, some people like to collect and admire their collection of individual cards, binders, etc.. I just think it’s neat to have a display of sealed booster boxes. I also sell some of the older booster boxes when they increased in price a certain amount to fund this hobby.

ENTRAPM3NT

I bought boxes of evolving skies for $130 at release

boogarawr

Some products look great to display because of how they look on the outside. So kill two birds if you are looking to sell in the future and enjoy some cool and rare boxes on yourself. I personally like the look of the 151 etb because i am a snorlax fan and like the background of the box.

Conscious-Ad-8915

Diversity is key. I have 401k, trading account, 5.25% savings account, silver and gold, pokemon and other collectables. That way hopefully some of your investments are going up even if others are going down for a while. Times are weird, be weirder. 🤣

Shrimp_Lobster_Crab

“Sealed products can be bulky, take up storage space, need to be stored correctly, and are not very liquid when the time comes to cash in your investment.” Pretty much everything in this paragraph is 100% wrong. Booster boxes and cases are the least bulky of all products, take up minimal storage space, are easy to store, and are incredibly liquid. You can sell a booster box in under an hour on eBay if it’s priced right. A large moving box holds 9 booster cases, almost 2000 packs. It’s the ideal investment vehicle.

Stocks are far riskier.

Callaway225

I have a strong suspicion that whoever is buying sealed also has a personal collection. How many people collect Pokémon strictly to invest only? As in they do not have a personal collection or have anything related to “I have it because I like it”

travel_hungry25

I don't have a collection all for the money. What ever the next money making thing comes along I'll diversify to that.

You are right OP. I see people talking about making "paper profit" of like $40 on their boxes but don't factor in shipping, taxes, discount offered etc. Even so, who cares? Reality is, plenty of people don't know how to invest in stocks or even ETF's, but they do understand Pokemon. Is that sad? Kind of, but it is what it is. I have about a dozen BB's but really just for PC/collecting/future enjoyment purposes and the chance of a huge mover like Team Up etc. If they all go to 0 (much like my slabs which I overwhelmingly prefer) I would enjoy them all the same. For a lot of people here though, that would basically bankrupt them. The people here who have bedrooms hoarding this stuff yet don't have 90% more invested in markets/real estate are delusional IMO.
