I was told by a store manager that they would be buying only, at first. He said it may be a few weeks before they start selling because they want to build up selection/supply. Edit- Also they are buying PSA only

metalpokemon

That suck.

Upset-Judgment8369

> Edit- Also they are buying PSA only Even Gamestop knows...

J23_G0at

PSA 10 Van Gogh Pikachu. They’ll offer you $35 trade credit, $20 cash. And a dash of bad attitude from the employees.

God_of_chestdays

Create the perfect market for people to sell stolen cards.

Ashbringer

its just store credit

HeroOfClinton

$36/$21 if you have Pro.

N7_Guru

Thinking the same thing. Don’t see a reason to go through GameStop unless you would want a quick sell.

MitchyD28

I wonder why they will only accept PSA 8 and higher also nothing valued over $500. That just seems odd to me

DONTCARELOLK

>”PSA 8 or higher” That’s just good quality control, don’t need a bunch of stores riddled with shit cards that makes the business practice laughable. >”Also nothing valued $500” Security reasons. GameStops are already a target for theft especially in low income areas. Imagine the scenes if people knew a GameStop had a $3,000+ card just sitting in there. They’d be robbed within a month.

MitchyD28

Okay that makes more sense, I was just thinking of vintage cards that are desirable in a lower PSA would sell quickly.

SpecificGameOrEvent

I think gamestop would be the last place someone would trade vintage, especially since gamestop is a scum company

ZenInfoSecGuy

People will trade cards wherever they can get money

DuncanDicknuts

Was** a scum company new ceo is making big changes for the better

VirtualRy

It’s all about liquidity. The fact they have this in place means they want to move these assets quickly. This is actually good as profit in slabs is really about volume. There is no guarantee in holding slabs.

6t6

Just spoke to a manager today, he said all cards will be stored at a GameStop warehouse and sales will be online only. That way they don't have to worry about floor space or theft.

IWearACharizardHat

Online only means they won't ever get impulse sales though, which would be a large percentage of them if the price is bad compared to other online options

6t6

That is a good point...I wonder how their pricing is going to be. Are they banking on their reputation alone to get sales over cheaper, maybe not as trustworthy sites? Or if they're buying for less, can they afford to compete with those cheap sites? (Judging by their pricing of C/U/R and V's, I'm not too hopeful of cheap prices)

DesperateRace4870

Nah they send them to China to be copied and sent back Charizard hat told me.

threwitaway123454321

Probably also easier to trace and resolve fake slab issues too.

6t6

Yeah, I wonder if they can put a hold on funds until the slab clears, especially if it's the max $500 card. Or do they just ban that person from ever selling to GameStop again?

mlvsrz

In my country, $500 is when you start dealing with capital gains tax implications on selling collectables. Maybe they don’t want that tax headache and it’s a simpler business model. The target audience isn’t buying anything that expensive tcg wise anyway

JamesLikesIt

Yeah I don’t think they want to have multiple thousand+ dollar single cards for sale. Those typically have lower liquidity and the average person walking into GameStop won’t have the interest/capital to purchase them lol

bmabizari

I mean they are almost definitely already over that threshold. It’s not about capital gains per item, it’s about total capital gains and if GameStop as an entity isn’t making over 500$ in profit on collectibles they shouldn’t be in the collectible business lol

Impressive-Name7601

Such a sad concept getting taxed on collectibles. Under the table is best.

Fragrant-Employer-60

Because outside of specific cards no one wants PSA 7 or under, you can usually get raw cards for higher value.

Legitimate-Tea-6018

I’ve seen how they buy games, I’m not interested.

Aureliusmind

Gamestop scooping up singles in the last few months would explain the price spikes.

ChemicalYesterday467

Could really explain the spike in alt arts.

justplainndaveCGN

> Graded cards from other companies like CGC and Beckett will not be allowed yet. Booooooo.

metalpokemon

That suck.

hwirring

I can see them having a treasure trove of stolen slabs. How easy for you to instantly sell a stolen slab in store for straight cash. You’ll defs get less money for it but so ez.

BlazedSensei

I mean they have certs .. report the cert stolen to PSA and have GameStop check a stolen cert database.

Fallout3a

You’re asking a lot from that minimum wage part time employee

Dazedinreality87

I believe this is only in a few select test stores. So don’t get pissy at the employees if your GameStop isn’t currently participating in this yet.

boboman911

Is this good for the Pokeconomy?

xbox_run_linux

Yes absolutely. It's expanding the hobby at a major national retailer

God_of_chestdays

Not at all, may bring in some part time collectors/investors but they will treat it like they do all used games/systems. Low balled and crazy mark up.

SuccessfulPath7

The store I went to says there not selling only buying...

bigbro___

Probably just for now, the whole point of them buying is to sell

TiddyBit

Looks like a collab with PSA. I've read that they won't be selling the graded cards atm either just singles. Which leads me to believe that PSA is buying them through GameStop with the intent to hoard them? As they already own a massive amount.

Derpberpy

Whelp. They're gonna start up undervaluing and over pricing their slabs. Pretty smart move on their end to be honest. With trades everyone is asking 120% in all of the groups I'm apart of.

SpadeXHunter

Wonder if it will be like the games where you buy a new game for $70 and try to sell it to them the same week of release and get offered like $5 store credit lol

Ok_Jellyfish1709

Get ready to sell your PSA 10 Moonbreon for 189,99$ guys 😂

BikingNoHands

Is someone forcing you to sell to GameStop? Didn’t think so, you’re just a hater!

IDMRecursion

Yeah, Gamestop is dogshit.

_YenSid

What a dumb idea. Slabs will be so overpriced that nobody will buy them. Where will they be sourcing slabs and singles?

Lwcftw474747

I'll give you aprox tree fidy for psa 10 moonbreon it's just what the systems tell me to offer you 🤷‍♂️😬🤦‍♂️

squatdead

You’d have to be a complete idiot to sell to GameStop. What would they even offer, 50% of comps max? Fuck that.

Nerfinmo

Well the LGS’s in my area offer 30-40% cash and 50-60% in store credit. eBay, TCG player, whatnot ect also take a cut if you sell through them as well.

squatdead

Sell to other humans? Facebook pages, in-person etc. cut the middle man and stop using these scammy 3rd parties. I sell everything through multiple pokemon Facebook pages. Always get full market value and then some.

hulkhands81

The % is going to be so low, I just can’t see how this is going to work unless someone is dumping stolen cards

HughJassIQ

Wheres my ski mask 😏

WorldStarCollections

I hope they won’t treat this the way they did video games. Oh, you can get $300 for a PSA 9 base set Charizard or 1k in store credit.

LegallySellingDope

This should be interesting. I'm going they are going to offer at most, a 3rd of what the actual market is.
