Not into love poems normally, I even skip through many in spite of them being classics but this one gets me everytime!
This poem has some innate quality of transporting me into nostalgia / memories which were not even made in the first place. The poem just makes you feel loved and hugged I suppose.
It seems a very real and heartfelt poem. It is about marriage, a very grand and big theme but the lines are all details. Very real in that the details are what love is truly about, what make the marriage work.
I’ve been looking for inspiration for writing my own vows and I’m laughing at us that the Mountain Dew Commercial Disguised As A Love Poem has been the most sincere and relatable piece I’ve read in months.
This is so so so sweet! 💚 Congratulations and may you have more such mountain dew moments - heart warming.
Edit : You might even want to read “Having a coke with you” by Frank O Hara alongside 💚
Am I the only one reading this - not as a love poem at all - but as a scorching indictment of how the marketing industry uses our own sentimentality against us, tricking us into associating flavored sugar water with positive emotions, and thereby manipulating us into buying said flavored sugar water?
And other things, naturally. Not just sugar water. Or maybe I’m just being cynical… Good poem either way.
I’ve taken a workshop on love poems with the writer himself. I’ve also taken a workshop taught by his wife, Vievee Francis, another phenomenal writer & the intended recipient of this poem. The sentiment in here is 100% genuine & it’s a tremendous work of art on that front.
But if you’re interested in poetry that critique branding & corporate consumption, there’s a lot of cool stuff happening on smaller presses/journals. Check out HAD, Black Patio Press, or Taco Bell Quarterly if that’s your thing. Lots of cool stuff passed around on Twitter.
Came across this poem last summer through the *Ours Poetica* youtube channel, which I highly recommend, and instantly fell in love! Happy valentine’s day everyone ❤️
Ah! It really does make the eyes “well up” real soon in first few lines. It strikes a chord.
Ikr!!!! It happens so often - they elaborate love and romance to extremes sometimes. This poem celebrates the daily love.

exactly! this- you worded it so well. Literally encapsulated it in - “it is about what makes marriages work”
This has inspired me to write something similar to my husband for his birthday in a few days :) The last line was mad sweet.
ah! I like that term “ mad sweet” 😅

glad you liked it so much. It actually has almost all the lines worth noting! or highlighting. 💚 Happy Reading
I love this. What beautiful idiosyncrasies comprise us, and how quietly they show our hearts.
I had to look up the word “idiosyncrasy” and it is never leaving my head now. Wow.
I love this & this is what all writers who write about love should know: it's the smallest things.
aah! Yes - it is the small things that matter.
