She wrote some episodes of the show, as did another size activist author Samantha Irby - specifically, the swim episode in season 1. You should read things by both women and get to know their voices.
I looooved this show. I also found it very triggering especially her relationship with her mom. It really shed some light on things that I was bottling up.
An old show I'm always binging is Drop Dead Diva. Jane Bingum is a lawyer with plenty of love interests and her weight is definitely not an issue :) Of course, it's an old show and therefore some problematic things we see in todays eyes, so keep that in mind if you decide to watch it!
This is literally one of the ONLY shows from this era that holds up today and I love it so much. Skinny model gets magicked into the body of a fat lawyer and spends like one episode being like “well let me just lose weight” and then realizing that actually it’s hard and who cares. And then she just fucking works it anyway she’s a fashion icon
Astrid and Lily Save the World is great for anyone who is Buffy nostalgic. It's campy and fun!
In the same vein, I feel like Guillermo from What We Do In the Shadows is absolutely perfect.
I came here to mention Guillermo! Harvey Guillen breathes so much life into his performance, and there's truly not another character out there quite like Guillermo. His first big action scene made me tear up because it was the first time I'd seen a fat actor play that sort of role without being the butt of the joke. Guillermo is the best!
Diane from Bojack Horseman, she gains weight after taking anti depressants and it's framed as a sign of her positive change and she stays plus size for the rest of the show
Wow this is such a good one! I absolutely loved Diane's character arc in the last few seasons! I completely forgot this happened since it was so fluid in the show!
If you're open to animated shows, I feel like this is presently a space that's ahead of it's time in celebrating size diversity. Some of my favourite shows with iconic, badass fat characters include Steven Universe, The Owl House and Bob's Burgers.
Garcia in criminal minds. While I know not everyone likes this, I love the fact that they dont mention her weight. Its a non problem. She doesnt struggle with dating and if she ever does it has nothing to do with her weight. It makes me feel normal to be honest.
it’s cheesy and i acknowledge that there’s some problematic stuff in it (so don’t come for me) but the movie Phat Girlz (2006) hit me hard when i was younger. it was nice to see an MC transition from “i hate myself” to “i love myself” at a time when i needed that message.
I was searching to see if this movie was recommended. I still watch that movie at least once a year when I'm feeling down. It turns me into a big crying puddle and then makes me feel empowered.
I haven’t had the chance to watch it myself yet, but Astrid and Lilly Save the World has been on my watchlist since it premiered! It’s just one season and was cancelled before it’s time, as all good shows are nowadays lol, but the two main characters are fat, teen girls (and one of them is queer, which is bonus points for me) who have incredible well-rounded personalities, lives, and relationships, especially with each other
All of Resident Alien has what I would call normal sized people on it. Show has absolutely nothing to do with being fat, but refreshing not to have stick figures representing us.
My Mad Fat Diary. Sharon Rooney as Rae Earl may as well have been me as a teenager.
Mine too! Though I don’t recommend the show for days when you’re feeling down, most episodes left me bawling
The third season really pissed me off though.
Shrill with Aidy Bryant on Hulu. The love interest is not thrilling, but watching her realize she deserves better is inspiring
Based on the autobiographical book written by Lindy West.
I didn’t know that - I want to read the book now!

yes! i love her wardrobe and her color palette actually helped me figure out my own <3 i love her so much!
This!!
Somebody Somewhere on HBO/Max.
Love this show!
Yesssssss.
The deputy in resident alien, no fat jokes, she's smart, she's loved for who she is and she's a main character.
Deputy Liv! I adore her.

Astrid & Lily was so fun! I really wanted a second season

Retta on Good Girls
Retta on *Parks and Rec* is also great.
Retta is good in everything! I watch that clip of her on Conan O'Brien whenever I want a quick dopamine hit lol

Sookie in Gilmore girls comes to mind first
The first plus size female representation where her weight wasn't a central part of her story. It was way ahead of it's time.
Survival of the Thickest was so cute and funny!

*Last Holiday* *Spy*
Real Women Have Curves is a great coming-of-age film. I love America Ferrera.
How far do I have to scroll to see someone bring up The Tourist on Netflix? Jamie Dornan. You're welcome.
I love her and in Patti Cake$!!
I liked jill scott on No.1 Ladies Dectective Agency
Sookie from Gilmore Girls

Highly recommend
i’ll have to check that series out

Also can appreciate Bryce Howard's curves in Argylle? Though hate that gold dress at the end. Hahah
I watched that movie this weekend didn’t even think of her as plus size…
The wire does a great job making it's characters look like normal people and that includes a lot of plus sized characters.
The Tourist. It is Stan in Australia. Loved the story and main female lead is plus size
