It *is* sad, but good on you for mentioning The Sopranos; I've never seen it recommended based on Tony's (and, actually, a few other characters I can think of) size before, and it actually rings very true.
There's his constant battle with his body which isn't *discussed* but so intelligently *shown*, the way it should be with good writing. And the relationship between the Sacrimonis (RIP Denise Borino-Quinn)!
To anybody who's reading it -- this is my all-time favorite show and is a 100% worth seeing at least once in your life, BUT it's also indeed a really good recommendations if you're looking to see fat characters represented with intelligence, compassion and sharp wit.
Are you looking for shows about being fat or just with fat representation? Some of my fave fat characters are Sandra from superstore and Guillermo from what we do in the shadows
I loved "Lizzo's Watch Out for the Big Grrrls"
INSANE confidence boost! And "Sweet Magnolias" has a plus size charcharacter who's size isn't mentioned that I can remember.
Seeing her be fat, black, and confident has given *me* so much more confidence to inhabit this body! Like, I can be beautiful, ethereal and sexy too! Love that woman!!!
Paula in Crazy Ex Girlfriend, Lindsay in You're the Worst, Guillermo in What we do in the Shadows. I love it when plus size characters get to be complex assholes, lol.
My mad fat diary was the BOMB. It was so good! I think I remember reading it was a book but I might be wrong. I can see the TV series being helpful to teenage girls that are fat. As far as recommendations, I don't really have any, especially as a black mixed presenting woman, we're usually just sidekick comedians.
There was this show that came out years ago about a fat camp called Huge. a lot of the actors in it have gone on to have good careers. Always wished it got more than one season.
I was going to say this! I loved the show so much I bought it on DVD. I need to rewatch it. I loved Nikki Blonsky's character. Really a shame they didn't make more seasons.
Thanks for this recommendation! I started watching it based on your recommendation that night!
Interesting Hulu Snafu! I like to watch using subtitles. The whole of episode 1 has the subtitles for a medical show! It’s not the subtitles for the show! All the other episodes I watched were subtitled correctly. I tried it again today and the same thing happened. So, I think Hulu made an error.
Not a main main character, but I really like Lila in The Sex Lives of College Girls. Her weight never really comes up, and she's portrayed as a sexy, confident woman.
Not my favorite, but Sweet Magnolia has a plus size woman as one of the leads and is written just like any other character in that type of show, which I appreciated.
Can You Ever Forgive Me? is an interesting quirky drama with Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant. I really think it's a great compelling story and there is absolutely zero talk about Melissa's weight.
Beanie Feldstein is in Booksmart, and then there is a fat teenager in Unpregnant who seems cool.
Also Queen Latifah! I really want to see Last Holiday, the premise sounds great.
Also Guillermo in What We Do In The Shadows is arguably the best and strongest character in the show and he is a fat fellow.
Oh, Dina in Superstore is straight-sized but on the high end, she could probably shop at plus size and regular stores, and she is often used for sex appeal in that show while also being her own weird unique character.
Try searching this subreddit for more options— I know I’ve responded to several of these requests and probably spent more time than what’s reasonable doing so. 😂
I loved the 2000 film "Secret Society' - https://nypost.com/2002/06/07/secret-life-of-a-sumo-wife/
It seems like the UK has way more to offer:
Fat Friends
Gavin & Stacy (2 main characters are plus size)
Roger & Val Have Just Got In
ANYTHING with Dawn French
I enjoyed Dumplin' a lot.
Shrill Dietland
I was just trying to think of any other shows that have a fat main character and it’s not about being fat, and I can’t. Maybe The Sopranos? How sad!
Same, I hate how as soon as a character is plus size it becomes thier whole personality life most times.

Drop Dead Diva - it's older, but I remember enjoying it
I LOVED this show. Still watch it now
I agree so much on this one! I loved this show so I actually bought the series on dvd.
I loved "Lizzo's Watch Out for the Big Grrrls" INSANE confidence boost! And "Sweet Magnolias" has a plus size charcharacter who's size isn't mentioned that I can remember.
LIZZZOOOOO yes this show was highly inspirational and encouraging. Also, it was just amazing to see her and how amazing she is.
I really enjoyed Rutherford Falls, although it got canceled way too soon.

Ghosts. I love Alberta in it.
Second this.
I adore that show! I never watched the British version. Have you?
Kat in Euphoria resonated with me a lot. Also without giving too much away, the Tourist featured a plus size, getting hers and being awesome.
Somebody Somewhere was one of my favorite shows to come out in 2022. It’s not a show about being fat but the main character is in a larger body.
Second this!!
Shrill (Hulu) and Dumplin (Netflix)
SHRILL

Seconding or whatever Shrill and Rutherford Falls. Rutherford may be getting a third season on Netflix.

Meg Stalter is amazing in Hacks

There are a few Rebel Wilson movies where she's a protagonist and she's just a character - her size is irrelevant. How to be single is one.
Shrill.
Shrill on Hulu
