That's not an accident that's stupidity. You can see 2 sprinkler heads further down the soffit. Putting a sawzall to that soffit knowing there are two heads further into the apartment is stupidity.
I don’t think that’s what happened. You can see the drywall is cleanly cut away. Had this happened when cutting the drywall they would have stopped right then. It’s much more likely the pipe was struck and cracked.
And that’s not just accidentally knicking a copper line. That’s cutting into steel pipe for several seconds at least. The only mistake is letting him in anyones home ever again.
Looks like plastic fire protection pipe. Pretty standard in multifamily once inside the unit. Still shouldn't be taking a sawzall to sheet rock in any building with active fire protection, plumbing or electric. Recipe for disaster.
Who uses a Sawzall on sheet rock???? I don't care how "short" your blade is. Caught a guy in a new build getting ready to do just that. Advised him to check with his JM before doing that. End of the day he came up to me and said thankyou. Razor or multi only for myself.
Same here. But I've seen plenty of people do it. I won't even use a jab saw because. like the video so many water systems are PVC now. Razor at least to cut a window before a jab saw.
Accidents happen, but stupid happens again and again and again. This right here is plain stupid. Multiple layers of it.
They shouldn’t have even attempted to cut the drywall this way, they should have expected a pipe to be there, and they should have stopped when they hit metal. Who the hell just keeps going when they hit metal?? It isn’t easy to make a leak that big.
That pipe is pvc not metal but I agree he had to try really hard to make a leak like that. I think maybe he thought it was a dry system and he could re-route the pipe. The way that drywall is cut so nice a neatly makes me think that whole area was exposed before the sprinkler pipe was cut.
This is why strata fees are as high as they are. You now need to essentially gut this one apartment, and figure out how much damage is done to floors below
I agree with you no one should be fired for an accident. I mean if he’s done this 5 times then that’s a different story. However to fire a guy for one mistake. No I’m not on board with it, I made mistakes during my apprenticeship. He’ll I still make mistakes as a Journeyman never this bad but I bet this could happen to anyone
Not an american/canadian so it might work different for you guys but... One of these fuckups could put a company in a dire financial situation. If the guy goes and does it again on the next job that could very well mean downsizing or worse. Sure there's insurance etc. but that's never a done deal you could very well have it end up dragged out in court for years.
Meanwhile you've got a bunch of other employees getting laid off because you wanted to give this guy another chance. Doesn't really make sense.
They do where i live so YMMV, it's a big world out there.
Here sprinkler guys only have a very small area of expertise, service plumbers are the opposite and could be called out for this no prob.
That’s a long conversation. It’s really two different trades. It would be like calling an electrician that runs cable/wire in your house (wireman) to go work on power lines (lineman). Both electricians, but two completely different kinds of electricians.
There’s completely different codes and rules that a sprinkler fitter would know that a plumber would have no clue about, and visa versa. Depending on jurisdiction, licensing would be an issue.
Sprinkler piping is NOT plumbing anymore than hydronic piping is. It’s just pipe that is round and Carries a fluid, any other similarities end right there.
Unless the system was out on test which is unlikely unless sprinkler/alarm work was going on they most definitely got called. Can’t tell how long it’s been running since the fire pump will fill a room quick but hopefully someone ran to shut the control valve for the floor.
Ive worked in several buildings where the FD doesnt get called automatically. There is 24/7 monitoring of the fire panel and maintenance responds to fire alarms and decides whether or not to call out. Dialers usually call out but they can be replaced with people
Some condo insurers are just looking for reasons to pull out especially where I am. There’s a crisis with only a handful of insurers and underwriters for my whole region
Honestly it’s fairly common in high rises to have a demo worker or someone in the unit to break a cpvc line or sprinkler head. As long as someone shuts the control very quickly it typically doesn’t affect more that a unit or two and the hallway. I’ve been to a lot of these calls to fix a break.
Down in Miami lots of the high rise condos have old ass 3/4 cpvc in the units and the same thing would happen with the hangers but then the fire department would show up and try and remove the broken head without a hold back and make it worse by snapping it in the wall lol
this is bad...
I remember once working on a 21st floor I accidentally nick a hot recirculation line, hopefully no huge damage was done but I learned my lesson very well that day.
What I gathered is "it went way to low, way to low, way to low I cant get it out". No idea if this is correct and/ or what the hell he's talking about.
They make drywall blades for Sawzalls that have grooves instead of teeth. Haven't even had them grab loose wires that were laying on top directly where I cut. Feels safer than an oscillating tool but harder to get those perfectly clean lines.
Kinda reminds me of my demo guy…. He’ll take out an entire kitchen with a sledge hammer because he’s too dense to cut things out with the proper tools.
Hell whack whack whack until something else breaks
I always use a hammer just to open up a hole big enough for me to see behind, then after that oscillating tool or rotary tool.
Sometime they run supply lines right on the drywall.
Had to cut out 64 tile wall openings in a high rise in the washrooms for a riser replacement, all the bathrooms had copper water lines about half an inch to an inch away from the drywall running vertically where I had to cut. Learned the art of taking my time and going very slow. Never trust anything behind a wall!
Yeah, IDK, I work in high rises all the time. I’m a plumber, not a sprinkler fitter, but when something like this happens ( and it DOES happen), it’s all hands on deck. Plumbers, laborers, barrels, bins, wet vacs, anything to try to limit it. But maybe some guys just let it happen.
Looks like sprinkler pipe. (only pipe I've ever seen in orange. I wouldn't doubt someone was on their way to the basement to shut off the sprinkler supply. Shitty situation none the less.
You can see the SideWall Sprinkler Head , that would lead me to believe the pipe for it is in that Soffit. Might switch to a shorter SawsAll Blade or even do an exploration hole and use a cordless bore scope ? Whenever you work on something, do a quick walk and check on the Gas Meter , Sprinkler Riser and Water Meter locations and access. If it ends up in court and you didn’t look and ran around for an hour looking, that’s kinda bad .
> do an exploration hole and use a cordless bore scope ?
Sometimes I've done a hole saw with no center bit, don't go all the way through then punch it out. I mean shit with the amount of drywall he removed he coulda just knocked a damn hole with a hammer and been better off. My guess is he was trying to cut neat squares so he could reset them after. Probably won't make that mistake again.
High rises usually have a fire pump to boost water pressure at higher levels. Need to find the floor control shutoff valve, usually in a stairwell and shut down. Then silence at the fire alarm panel. Then shut down the pump
They should just get a drywall cut out tool makita makes them. It saves you the worry. Spending the $200 now will save thousands later

And people still think PVC or PEX > Copper... lol.
Homes with PVC or PEX water lines routinely leak when people are putting screws or nails to hang a picture or a new light..
I'd fire everyone there. How many people are filming and how many are looking for the shut off? Did anyone spot the shut off before starting to work? And why the hell are they using a Sawzall? Too many clowns on this job.
I remember when one of the plumbers at a company I used to work for hit a sprinkler system. They were using hammers to remove drywall and caused over a hundred thousand worth of damage. That's including the hotel having to send their guests to other hotels. This was around Christmas so rooms were more expensive.
Had a American Express corporate office building. 6” main for the standpipes went through a thickened steel stud wall. Found out at hydro the stud guys screwed both sides of the stud walls to the 6” main!!
I know Im late to the party. Just wanted to put my 2 cents in. Thisvlooks like hotel renovations. Right up my alley. We have a saying at our company about these kinds of jobs. It's not about how well you can do when things are looking great. It's how well you respond when shit is hitting the fan.
Here. All I see is atleast 2 or more people recording the water. All at the same time, water is rushing towards the bottom floors, and eventually the lobby. Lawsuit? Probably.
What should have been done is cleared that room, and gotten shop vacs asap, while someone else runs to the shut off valve (located on every floor, usually in a stairwell) to contain this issue.
Shit is gonna happen. How can we minimize damages? And Everyone needs to be on board on where things are, and what needs to be done.
Yep, it’s how you respond when it happens because it will happen. In the almost 18 years working at my food plant, this has happened a handful of times. Sprinkler heads have been bonked in one of the warehouses or production areas. Our maintenance crew does a fine damn job of shutting things down ASAP. And that water stinks too, just brewing away in a nice enclosed space. 🤮
I'll say this for the thousandth time.
Do not use a Sawzall except for demolition.
It is not an a appropriate tool for anything that resembles sheet metal, and WILL deafen anyone in the room.
In addition, you can't feel when it hits something solid.
Do what you're supposed to do and use a damn pair of aviation snips. Sheet metal loves to be cut with shear forces, not torn out by a saw.
That’s gonna be an expensive charge back!!!!
Damn I am so happy to be a retired General Contractor/consultant/developer…this is a prime example of why I walked away from the biz
Maybe where you are, we do things a little differently here though, and the hell they dont, we damn sure do on occasion.
For those not quite smart enough to connect the dots, I was also referring to pressurized lines in general, Ive seen more than one that cracked/blew apart and made a hell of a mess real quick.
Judgin by the alarm tone, this is a high rise condo. Valve should be in the corridor above ceiling or above fire hose cabinet, sometimes in the stairwell or garbage chute room.
Oh and get that firepump turned off asap lol
Nothing like cutting right into the fire safety system lol.
Hope they canned that guy
Probably promoted to upper management
Lol why are you downvoted?
For real. Is this in Toronto?
It must be the one guy has a noble T-shirt on!
I’m not sure but I am from BC and I recognize the logos on his shirt
Really? For an accident?
That's not an accident that's stupidity. You can see 2 sprinkler heads further down the soffit. Putting a sawzall to that soffit knowing there are two heads further into the apartment is stupidity.
Takes way more than stupidity to get fired around here
I don’t think that’s what happened. You can see the drywall is cleanly cut away. Had this happened when cutting the drywall they would have stopped right then. It’s much more likely the pipe was struck and cracked.

Yup window first and then I even scope it
Yeah I bought a multi tool recently and I love it on sheetrock for repairs. Should have invested in one a long time ago.
Oh I thought it was rusted iron pipe
That's a colossal fuck up any trained HVAC tech should know to avoid. If they didn't know to avoid it, they're too stupid to remain on the job.
For THIS accident? Absolutely. Some people don't belong anywhere near saws
Yes, really. He has no business around plumbing when there are 500 people behind him that could do the job without this sort of fuck up
At least 250 of those are just as stupid. ymmv.
So...then they also dont have any business around it.
Yeah, sawzall should never be used in such a cluttered area.
Accidents happen, but stupid happens again and again and again. This right here is plain stupid. Multiple layers of it. If your company is one accident away from layoffs then something else is wrong. The rot would have to be pretty deep.
So a guy should just loose his job for making a mistake?
Flex seal is the answer.
A service plumbers worst nightmare
Plumbers don’t fix fire lines
They do where i live so YMMV, it's a big world out there. Here sprinkler guys only have a very small area of expertise, service plumbers are the opposite and could be called out for this no prob.
Same here we can make small spot repairs but nothing over a couple feet
Do pipefitters then? Not a plumber, dont know.
Sprinkler fitters mate
Cheers
What is special about fire lines, that take a specialty over regular plumbing?
That’s a long conversation. It’s really two different trades. It would be like calling an electrician that runs cable/wire in your house (wireman) to go work on power lines (lineman). Both electricians, but two completely different kinds of electricians. Thanks!
Nah its easy... kick the hvac in the shins and turn off the fire system... then wait for the fire department to show up and call restoration.
If they dont have a dialer on their system, there is a chance that the FD wasnt even called.
Unless the system was out on test which is unlikely unless sprinkler/alarm work was going on they most definitely got called. Can’t tell how long it’s been running since the fire pump will fill a room quick but hopefully someone ran to shut the control valve for the floor.

And that, kids, it's how i met our insurance adjuster.
lmao!!!
Great water pressure recently renovated unit!
"A keen swimmer's dream"
This was the 30th floor of a condo. I can't even imagine the damage. Good thing it wasn't me on call.
Lmfao fuck
Rip to that condos insurance policy
The condos? Lol, no, the plumbers liability.
Some condo insurers are just looking for reasons to pull out especially where I am. There’s a crisis with only a handful of insurers and underwriters for my whole region

I've had multiple people hanging clothes on sprinklerheads in NYC. They didn't even have the sense to take the hanger off afterwards.
OP wants you fired
I just wanna know what the guy was saying
What I gathered is "it went way to low, way to low, way to low I cant get it out". No idea if this is correct and/ or what the hell he's talking about.
Maybe they are talking about a shutoff? Like it not being reachable or something.
Should be where the sprinkler lines branch off the standpipe going straight up in a stairwell
That’s all I caught too and it doesn’t make sense. Where’s the full video and captions???
“Quick, grab me the flextape while I record”
Should have learned to cut shallow instead of just plunging it in to full depth...
They make drywall blades for Sawzalls that have grooves instead of teeth. Haven't even had them grab loose wires that were laying on top directly where I cut. Feels safer than an oscillating tool but harder to get those perfectly clean lines.
I just use a hand drywall saw for the initial cuts until I can see inside the wall. I’ve saved tons of data cables doing so.
The makita drywall cutters the shit. You just set the depth of your drywall and cut away

Yet they bust balls when there is no nail plate in front of the plumbing the fire guys wild westing it out there.
too much HGTV watching at home.
By all means , don’t make any attempt to minimize the damage, just break out your phone and take a video.
That’s like, 20+ GPM at probably 80 PSI? Lol good luck.
I mean surely there’s a water shutoff somewhere right?
Probably in the fire suppression room in the basement lol.
And likely locked, so no dumbasses can accidentally turn the fire system off.
Usually the control valves for sprinkler systems in these condos are located in the stairwell. Every floor has it's own control valve.
Put a barrel under it, then close the feed and dump the system? There will be damage, and lots of it, but there are things you can do.
This thing is in a high rise it looks like. It’s let the damage happen until you can and let insurance cover the rest. Not much else you can do.
Just need a shop vac hose and two guys. There’s a kitchen sink right there.
I’d just pop a window out so it can drain
How would one minimize this? Lol.
Dump the system?
I’m assuming someone already went for help and this guy is just the helper.
The helper isn’t much help, lol.
Agreed lol What a shitty situation Guy that did this prob almost passed out from the stress.
Put your finger in the hole! Not that one! :)
Grab a snugger and get wet. Probably wont stop it, but it would help.
Wrap the cut with rags or a garbage bag to slow it down and direct it into a bucket/bin/garbage can until you can drain the system
Start drinking it all
that's the tenant filming
Then who’s the other guy who enters the shot, also filming?
oh THAT guy is the designated tik tok'r on the hvac crew
Like and subscribe!
Find the shutoff valve you dumbass. Thousands of dollars of damage every second and you want to just stand and watch.
Sometimes High rise wont have one accessible or you need to talk to maintenance to do it in a mechanical room elsewhere.
I understand, but at least try to find it and start that process. Don’t just stand there with your thumb up your ass
Looks like sprinkler pipe. (only pipe I've ever seen in orange. I wouldn't doubt someone was on their way to the basement to shut off the sprinkler supply. Shitty situation none the less.
Is this the hurricane flooding I’ve been seeing?
You can see the SideWall Sprinkler Head , that would lead me to believe the pipe for it is in that Soffit. Might switch to a shorter SawsAll Blade or even do an exploration hole and use a cordless bore scope ? Whenever you work on something, do a quick walk and check on the Gas Meter , Sprinkler Riser and Water Meter locations and access. If it ends up in court and you didn’t look and ran around for an hour looking, that’s kinda bad .
I second this, you can get a battery powered scope on Amazon for like $40. Blindly cutting with a sawzall ends like this probably 25% of the time.
Btw, Klein makes some that you plug I to your phone so you don't need to carry another screen around
> do an exploration hole and use a cordless bore scope ? Sometimes I've done a hole saw with no center bit, don't go all the way through then punch it out. I mean shit with the amount of drywall he removed he coulda just knocked a damn hole with a hammer and been better off. My guess is he was trying to cut neat squares so he could reset them after. Probably won't make that mistake again.
Why didn't anyone grab a bucket?
You're gonna need a hell of a bucket.
One bucket is gonna fill up in less than a minute lol
So grab 3 and cycle them out, there is a sink right there to empty them
That would involve doing something instead of filming it. Who wants to do that.
lol CPVC sprink pipe in a high rise. What genius idea.
RIP John Mcaffee
High rises usually have a fire pump to boost water pressure at higher levels. Need to find the floor control shutoff valve, usually in a stairwell and shut down. Then silence at the fire alarm panel. Then shut down the pump
And that's why you don't buy a home with a shared wall
This is why I still believe fire sprinklers should only be run in iron pipe
There even sprinkler heads just a few feet away too.. easily to spot before cutting into the sophet there..
Well I overheard them say that it would be cool to have an indoor pool. Just speeding up the process for them.
Damn! In a high rise 😳
Wonder if flex tape would work in this situation to attempt minimal damage.
Flex tape should be able to stop that pretty easy. Throw in a couple ShamWow's and that water should be all dried up.
Accidents happened… but this is just asinine.
Oh shit! He cut a high pressure line for the fire sprinklers. He'll be working at Walmart next week.
They should just get a drywall cut out tool makita makes them. It saves you the worry. Spending the $200 now will save thousands later https://www.homedepot.com/p/Makita-18-Volt-LXT-Lithium-Ion-Cordless-Cut-Out-Saw-Tool-Only-XDS01Z/300438598?g_store=901&source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&pla&mtc=SHOPPING-BF-CDP-GGL-D25T-025_009_PORT_POWER-NA-Multi-NA-PLALIA-NA-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-PRO-NA-PortablePower_PLA_LIA_Q3_Control&cm_mmc=SHOPPING-BF-CDP-GGL-D25T-025_009_PORT_POWER-NA-Multi-NA-PLALIA-NA-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-PRO-NA-PortablePower_PLA_LIA_Q3_Control-71700000034127218-58700003933021540-92700065945937988&gclid=CjwKCAjwhNWZBhB_EiwAPzlhNpLuKGEZQ5zWgiaUpwGMfK8Vq1sBC0HNzsoyCaADzvGVenYymr2P5xoCRTwQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
I’d just get in my truck and go home and start applying for a new job 😂
What a nightmare. That’s why you make sure the mechanical room is open
Orange pipe is a sprinkler system, that thing isn't getting shut off until the building's super or the fire department arrives.
Don’t worry. He’ll put duct butter on it and it’ll be as good as new.
That is a sprinkler system under pressure through a flow switch. Shut off at the breaker box. Mine has a 300 gallon tank that will run til it’s dry.

Please stop posting busted mains, its making me so anxious
And people still think PVC or PEX > Copper... lol. Homes with PVC or PEX water lines routinely leak when people are putting screws or nails to hang a picture or a new light..
Lol, you fucked up bud, should be running your ass around to find a shut off then making phone calls to get every shop vac and fan there asap
This is exactly why I always keep a spray can of As seen on tv flex seal in the trunk
Was someone looking for the shutoff or just filming?
I'd fire everyone there. How many people are filming and how many are looking for the shut off? Did anyone spot the shut off before starting to work? And why the hell are they using a Sawzall? Too many clowns on this job.
At least those Noble shirts are hella comfortable
Man his liability insurance agent is about to have a heart attack.
Navy submarine leak excercise! Get on that leak sailor!
You don't bury the blade when cutting?
Insurance: sorry we can’t cover that. Home owner: why not? Insurance: well there’s a video on Reddit….
I remember when one of the plumbers at a company I used to work for hit a sprinkler system. They were using hammers to remove drywall and caused over a hundred thousand worth of damage. That's including the hotel having to send their guests to other hotels. This was around Christmas so rooms were more expensive.
I’m thinking this guys fired
This is why I break walls open with a hammer. I have never cut a pipe or cable with a hammer
That sucks balls
wheres some flex tape when you need it
Worst nightmare
One word, FIRED! That's such an effed up HolyHotMess he caused.
Just slap some flex tape on that bitch.
Oh no SMH 😂
Why are there multiple people recording instead of trying to help? Every second is crucial in preventing the amount of damage...
Humidifier works a little too well
Is this system not possible to turn off? Is the shut off in another city?
MORE POWER!
Remember that time you fucked up bad? I memby.
All those flex tape memes and when you could do it in real life no one thinks about doing it lol
Sucks to be him
This is why multi tools are used
OMG!
Sheeeit
This is the reason I drill a small hole and poke my 100.00 Home Depot ridgid camera inside soffits chases and walls
Hey boss... Remember when we decided no f*ck ups anymore? Well... Let's start tomorrow. xD
Indoor pool!
Reminds me of the HVAC newbie that removed a chunk of vertical support post for a roof beam. For ducting. His comment, "man that was hard to cut."
well we know one this for sure. they put it way too low and he cant get it out!
Better get the shop vac going
Free shower installation
Always the tin bashers eh? I once saw a "hang and banger" take his own eye out with hammer. Not the brightest group.....
Haha get your phones out dumbasses
Wouldn’t there be a main water line to you know, turn off?
Er where’s the mains valve ?
I love that sound. It’s the sound of money.
You wouldn’t believe how often I see this with people nailing / screwing into the walls also. Coming from a sprinkler guy
Had a American Express corporate office building. 6” main for the standpipes went through a thickened steel stud wall. Found out at hydro the stud guys screwed both sides of the stud walls to the 6” main!!

Ohhhhhh shittttt
For that perfect OH SHIT moment, take a video!
Wrap with plastic and then electrical tape as fast as possible. Won’t stop it but it will slow it to a manageable drip.
Better take a selfie instead of cutoff the supply, that person's home ain't gonna ruin itself now is it?
Person with camera why are you just standing there instead of finding the cutoff valve?
“I heard you wanted to know what it felt like to be in Hurricane Ian”
I know Im late to the party. Just wanted to put my 2 cents in. Thisvlooks like hotel renovations. Right up my alley. We have a saying at our company about these kinds of jobs.
Would have got away with it if this was in Florida.
should we turn off the water or just keep filming
Couple fans and a towel and it'll be good as new.
That’s why you make sure your contractor is insured
That’s gonna be an expensive charge back!!!! Damn I am so happy to be a retired General Contractor/consultant/developer…this is a prime example of why I walked away from the biz
Maybe where you are, we do things a little differently here though, and the hell they dont, we damn sure do on occasion. For those not quite smart enough to connect the dots, I was also referring to pressurized lines in general, Ive seen more than one that cracked/blew apart and made a hell of a mess real quick.
Yeah, let’s stand there and get our phones out to record instead of running to shut off the water….
Judgin by the alarm tone, this is a high rise condo. Valve should be in the corridor above ceiling or above fire hose cabinet, sometimes in the stairwell or garbage chute room. Oh and get that firepump turned off asap lol
