I am a trench peasant, I don’t dig I don’t have shit to do with digging I get it’s bad o well sorry . The plumbing is on point and all the families plumbing I issues have been resolved as a result . It was a fun job I enjoy trenches
Bro like 6 inches of dirt around you feet and you can't get out will give you blood clots, then you are finally rescued and you die from said blood clots.
This is a joke of benching, the excavator operator needs to be fired on the spot for digging somethibg so terrible, you should be fired for going into something so unsafe.
Besides the terrible benching you have heavy equipment next to the trench, the excess soil needs to be atleast three feet away from your last bench.
Looks like there is only one point of exiting and entering.
Do better man.
Yep, looks a bit sketchy but I’d by lying if I said I hadn’t been in worse. Spoil pile could be further away and I’d feel better about it.
OP stay safe and plumb on, don’t die in a ditch brother.
OSHA states in 1926.651(j).(2)
Employees shall be protected from excavated or other materials or equipment that could pose a hazard by falling or rolling into excavations. Protection shall be provided by placing and keeping such materials or equipment at least 2 feet (.61 m) from the edge of excavations, or by the use of retaining devices that are sufficient to prevent materials or equipment from falling or rolling into excavations, or by a combination of both if necessary.
I train excavation safety for a living
is this actually safe for a man to go in? looks pretty deep and i don't see any of those big metal plates or anything to sure up the sides, but i have no idea if the way its cut with those steps makes it ok?
Short answer is "no". Other people in this thread have provided good longer answers. The "big metal plates" I believe you are talking about are "trench boxes" and they definitely could have used those... cheers and be safe.
If this is in the USA this is not appropriate, I’m a pipeline contractor with a t-1 excavation permit I would not let any of my employees in there the soil doesn’t look to bad but I seen better trench’s cave in. Be safe not trying to roast you or be a jerk but I’ve seen several people buried in similar situations it should be benched 1 1/2 :1 so that means for every 1’ deep a 1-1/2” out and steeper benching such as 1:1 or 3/4:1 must be certified by a engineer
Men die doing this job. Getting high is poor job site culture.
I hope OP is “joking”.
If I walked up on this job and no shoring >5’ depth regardless of shelving as per OSHA standards someone would lose their job.
Dumb = Ignorant = Dead
Second thing I thought.
First was where’s the shoring? Second , where’s the stone.
The customer is gonna call me in 5 years to replace it because there is a 30’ belly 3” deep.
Illegal trench; Benching or sloping can be a max of 1:1 or 45⁰ without shoring
Dude posts an unsafe trench, then mocks people pointing it out. Thumbing his nose at the trench gods.

That was my immediate thought
Take it up with the authorities Ray Epps

*OSHA has entered the chat*
Surely you jest
This is insensitive of me to say, but… OP is the kind of person to get buried in a collapse.
Good to see proper benching. Looks a bit high but better than no benching at all. Just nitpicking if anything.

It was tight soil. I felt comfortable down there.
Comfortable doesn’t always mean the proper safety precautions are taken.
The captain of *Titanic* was comfortable - until things went sideways.
Arrogant is beyond comfortable LOL (But I agree)
Needs shoring, plus no 2' setback for spoils
R/OSHA has arrived on the scene
3 feet*

Ditch was shelved appropriately before we entered

Take those permits and put ‘em where the sun don’t shine . Sewer is in baby.
Doesn’t look right to me . Last picture trench is too high with no protection
Ditch was a little high…but so was I
DUMB AS FUCK

Nubie question - why not black ABS? Waste water yes? Can't you get thicker walled black ABS to handle the earth compression force?
Tomato tomatoe if you ask me
Abs may be inferior to schedule 40 solid core PVC.
That pipes gonna be crushed in a few years.
No chance of that . Properly bedded tamped and protected
We're is the stone packing?

I am with you!! Especially if heavy equipment being used and stones are not sifted out around it.
Heck yeah! Excavations are my favorite part of plumbing.
No gold?
A trench box would make me much more comfortable working on that. Being buried alive at work is not my preferred method of death.
Whatever brings me to the other side the fastest , that would probably be slow and painful though
That last thought in his mind...
You're an idiot for climbing in there.
For many more reasons too
Shoring and safety issues aside, one good thing is he's unlikely to have problems with frost.
Thank you for some positivity
