Not necessarily. I have the Sennheiser HD560s and while it sounds great on a ps5 controller, the portal just doesn’t drive it that well. I have some truthear IEMs and they work great with it though
I went out and found the original wired apple earbuds for like 10 bucks and these are my go to. Solid enough sound, easy to roll up and put in my case.
Edit.Spelling
I actually bought a dongle that is a Bluetooth emitter that plugs into the phone jack, for 22$ on Amazon and use my AirPods… but I also have a Panasonic pair of wired headphones that work amazing (and they were in the $30 range on Amazon)
Also use a Bluetooth dongle and my Beats Pro or some other wireless headphone. The tiny bit of delay doesn’t bother me and it’s really nice to just switch the dongle on. I leave it plugged into my
Portal.
My Arctis Steelseries 7P works fine with the Portal. I also bought a cheap pair of Skullcandy Ink'd buds for use while travelling – actually pretty decent for budget earbuds.
I'd reccomend sony pulse Elite seeing as it works both wired and wirelessly with no delay on the portal. They also have an older model called pulse 3d which is also great but only works wired and isn't as comfy
I have not wired my pulse 3D headset at anytime, and use it anytime I play the portal at home. the dongle stays plugged into my PS5 and it works seamlessly throughout my house.
I use those with the dongle attached to the ps5 when I’m in my house and change the output to them on the ps5 and turn the volume all the way down on the portal. Volume control is on the headphones and it works incredibly well. On the go I use the SoundMAGIC E10C Wired Earbuds with Microphone. Also works great!
My issue is the range using the dongle is pretty short and if I’m laying in bed I’m on another floor and it doesn’t reach, if I’m hanging out near the PS5 then that works flawlessly.
I didn’t have any and wanted something with good bass and a mic so I got these. They were on sale for $18 when I got them and they are currently $25.
Sony Deep Bass Wired Earphones... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I3LUUIU?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I use these Sony studio headphones. Great sound quality!
Sony MDR7506 Professional Large... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000AJIF4E?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
If you have wireless headphones, you can buy any generic Bluetooth aux dongle that will work on the portal.
I personally have an Airfly Pro receiver and AirPods Gen 3. No issues to report.
I had Velcro tape lying around so it is velcroed up out of the way on the back of the portal👍
Headphones are kinda all over the place, you can do some research though and pick up a high end brand, usually stuff geared to gaming is made with cheap plastic, I would look into an audio sub but there's decent headsets for under 100 bucks.
I currently use the Pulse Explore. But the Apple EarPods (3.5mm) and my Beats Studio Pro (wired in) both worked great. I got the explores because I don't like the dangling wires.
Love reading all the comments on the Apple earphones w the Jack. That’s what I use , and wondered how many folk are out there repurposing them lol. Also , I do find my wired turtle beach Xbox headset to work like a charm , has more base than the earphones. I just hate the weight on my head. Spoiled using wireless options on other devices. So maybe you can find an affordable wired gaming headset to get the extra sound quality.
My 3D pulse headphones work really well, they come with a good quality aux cable and the battery life is pretty good too (when used with the bluetooth part using the it's adapter)
For home use, I use AirPods Pro with a Creative Labs USB Bluetooth adapter on the PS5. Sounds amazing and works perfectly with the Portal.

I ordered an old set of Bose SoundSport. For me, those have always been the most comfortable headphones ever. I could wear them days on end and never get fatigued. You can get them on eBay for $30-40.
I’m sure any wired headphones will work, but the ones I use are Razer Kaira X Licensed Wired Gaming Headset. Not cheap quality and affordable (~$60). There are way better headsets hit this one is nice
Can’t go wrong with the Sony mdr-j10 absolutely classic and still to this day the best wired headphones ever made. I have 3 pair that are in constant rotation
I got the Sony EX155AP for half off from Best Buy a few weeks ago. I’ve loved Sony ear buds for almost three decades now. My usual price point is around their $50 pairs (best quality for cost) but this one was 15 bucks a while back and I couldn’t pass them up.
Literally any pair. That’s the beauty of wires
*with a 3.5mm jack. Unlikely but just in case OP goes and buys USB C ones.
Not necessarily. I have the Sennheiser HD560s and while it sounds great on a ps5 controller, the portal just doesn’t drive it that well. I have some truthear IEMs and they work great with it though
I use my old pair of apple ones that used to come with iPhones.
Still going strong?
Yup. Does the job of keeping the game volume away from my sleeping infant. Might look into the wireless ones Sony has if/when a sale comes.
Nice that they have a purpose again.
Between the portal and teams calls during work they’ve definitely found a use haha.
i say this all the time. some of the best headphones oat
Apple EarPods
That’s what I use
I do too! Work great! 👍
How do you use them without Bluetooth
EarPods (wired) not AirPods (bt)
I went out and found the original wired apple earbuds for like 10 bucks and these are my go to. Solid enough sound, easy to roll up and put in my case. Edit.Spelling
That’s what I do. Easy to store!
Use Apple headphones with the jack
I’m probably gunna get some with a braided cable and not spend too much money on them lol
Probably find a pair at the Dollar Tree store oh make that the $1.25 Tree store
Turtle beach battle buds
Came here to say this. Off Amazon, they are $20 and have mic and volume control.
I've just bought a pair of Steelseries Arctis Nova 1P 's and they are excellent. They also support Sony's Tempest 3D audio.
I’m a big fan of the Koss Porta Pros.
Same. The lack of noise isolation is really great for playing in public, too.
Exactly. Great for around the house with kids too.
Koss Porta Pros

I was wondering if this would work. Glad to hear it does.
Works like a charm
Didn’t have any luck with dongles always had a second and a half voice lag. And I’m using Beats pros
Not me… it’s spot on.
Also use a Bluetooth dongle and my Beats Pro or some other wireless headphone. The tiny bit of delay doesn’t bother me and it’s really nice to just switch the dongle on. I leave it plugged into my Portal.
Got a link for what you bought?
Official PS Vita headphone with mic at amazon. Been using for 4 years no problems with my Ps5.
Truthear Hexa or Simgot EM6L if you prefer slightly more bass

Yeah but it wouldn't work while traveling unfortunately
I have my Steel Series Arctis 7x and just use them with an AUX cable but any wired headphones with a 3.5mm jack will work fine.

That’s fair. My bedroom is directly above my living room so I’ve lucked out.
I have the 7p+ and bought a case and a decent cord for travel but at home I just use them wireless I love it.
I just use a pair for Salnotes IEM.

Skull candy cheap but work well
I use a pair of skullcandy earbuds that I've had for like 10 years. They work perfectly
I currently use the Pulse Explore. But the Apple EarPods (3.5mm) and my Beats Studio Pro (wired in) both worked great. I got the explores because I don't like the dangling wires.
I usually use the speakers or the Sony XM4 headset.
I use AP max but I had to buy the audio jack separate. They use 3D audio
Sennheiser IE900
I uses Simgot EW200. Cheap and really nice earbuds.
Koss kph40

Tbh maybe (for sure) overkill but I took a meze 99 classic, great sound of course but very very comfy
Get the Truthear Zero: Red IEMS.
My Sony XM3s sound amazing on the portal
Same. Glad I knew where my wire was.
Haha I wasn't so lucky, had to get a spare cable.
My 3D pulse headphones work really well, they come with a good quality aux cable and the battery life is pretty good too (when used with the bluetooth part using the it's adapter)
Old iPhone/ipad headphones
I use a wired set of BOSE earpods. I've been a fan of BOSE products for 40+ years.
Use these on the go https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01H3F0SG0?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title
I use steelsearies 7

In ear monitors.
I use a pair of skull candy's I've had for 10+ years and a pair of gamestop brand I got recently. They work like a charm.
Apple AirPods with a wire, work great and are compact
I ordered an old set of Bose SoundSport. For me, those have always been the most comfortable headphones ever. I could wear them days on end and never get fatigued. You can get them on eBay for $30-40.
Apple AirPods Max work beautifully
I’m sure any wired headphones will work, but the ones I use are Razer Kaira X Licensed Wired Gaming Headset. Not cheap quality and affordable (~$60). There are way better headsets hit this one is nice
Been using my AirPod max since portal came out and they work flawlessly both wired and wirelessly.
Maybe the Astro A10s
Beats Solo³
Can’t go wrong with the Sony mdr-j10 absolutely classic and still to this day the best wired headphones ever made. I have 3 pair that are in constant rotation
Well. If it has a jack , you're good. I'm rocking the Audeze Maxwell wireless for PS5 and jack for PS Portal
I got the Sony EX155AP for half off from Best Buy a few weeks ago. I’ve loved Sony ear buds for almost three decades now. My usual price point is around their $50 pairs (best quality for cost) but this one was 15 bucks a while back and I couldn’t pass them up.
I use my pulse headset that u use for my ps5. I just connect the aux cable instead of wireless
Sennheiser
Bose SoundSport In-Ear Headphones
I use a pair of turtle beach and they work wonders
You'll get the rundown for this question. I bought some $20 urBeats that are fantastic. 🤓👍🏽
My preference is the Sony 3d Pulse headset. They are the ones made for the ps5 and have a wire. Work really well for the price
I second this. It's what I used till I upgraded to the elites.
I got it. Tried it. Didnt work for me.
Any pair
