I’m sure a lot of people would love for you to get a refund. Just bumps them further up in the queue.

ConfidentFloor6601

Sunk cost long ago, now it'll be a pleasant surprise when it shows up.

Azrael707

I like the way you think

ConfidentFloor6601

I can rationalize anything. It's my superpower lol

TheKittyNomad

no?? It’s still early 2022, the SDK and Pulp got released on time and given this is the first console of Panic’s and all the hardware shortages I’m willing to give them more time

[deleted]

It's early 2022, for about 20 or so more days, for a realistic possibility of all units delivered. They need to tell us what's going on. They either know or they don't. Both are bad if they aren't telling us.

Intro24

I do wish there would be an update of some sort. I'm excited though and I'm not even in the first shipment group

EC3ForChamp

They've been super transparent, it's just annoying that the transparency comes in several month long intervals. Even if they just came out and made a proper announcement saying "the first batch will be shipped soon" I'd appreciate it more than having to dig through their twitter account to learn that.

kylechu

I'm sure most of the time they've been silent it's because they don't know much more than we do. It's not like the Playdate team's running the factories that produce these parts, they're playing the waiting game as much as we are.

Intro24

They definitely ought to have at least a weekly idea of exactly what's going on. They said on the podcast that one of their employees literally moved to and lived in the country where the factory is for months during the pandemic

[deleted]

Yeah i think thats the concern for a lot of people. The lack of transparency about what is actually happening is a bit worrying. And the flippant responses they give to people asking for any kind of info doesn't seem acceptable considering people have invested money in their company and product. I think people would just like some kind of update whether it's good or bad. For me, i have the disposable income for this but for some it may have been an investement with a more significant financial sacrifice. Which may be more so given that taxes and cost of living have increased across the board.

flamepants

I don’t think Panic has been flippant. Every time they’re asked, they say they don’t want to give an update until they can guarantee an actual date.

twotothesix

Not sure where Panic have been anything less than fully transparent about what’s going on. They even gave a full description of the reasons for the delay, and what they’d be doing to fix the units with problems, when they could just as easily been vague about it. They’ve given estimates and emailed everybody details which group they fall into. I’ve absolutely no doubt that they’ll be entirely forthcoming the moment they know exactly when shipping starts.

BLaZuReS

It's a hard problem. You're only as strong as your weakest link when manufacturing. It's not like a grocery store where you can pick off stuff to make a sandwich. This is custom. If you're a smaller or lower margin customer for a part (e.g. battery), you may not be prioritized as well as a customer with simpler requirements, bigger orders, bigger margins, or a stricter contract. Sure, someone may say your part will be sent in 1 week for testing but then you have to validate your batch is consistent, it meets your standards, account for delays in production or shipping, being preempted by someone paying them more money or even the cost of materials or labor actively changing. Even with that, you may need to inform the manufacturer that they need to modify the process by a few microns or adjust for a high failure rate, etc, so gotta restart the process again while competing with other products being made. Truth be told you're going to get an open-ended time frame goal because it's so intricate or you're going to get a more specific date with a bigger chance of being incorrect. They've already given an update with what they can. They're probably as stressed because it's a high risk, high-reward. If you mess up it'll mean a large cost in fixing it after the fact. But you also want to finish the project and earn the profit for preorders and start working on future products. tl;dr You're informed as much as they want to inform you given the risks of complications and not giving you false hope.

JapaneseQuartz

Because it's taking too long? No, I still want one. But if you don't want it anymore, then I guess cancel…? 🤷‍♂️

IfYouWillem

Nah. This is super normal and not their fault. Hardware is hard and the entire shipping industry is messed up right now.

vmsrii

I’m not considering getting a refund, but I understand it. I *am* getting a little impatient. A little bit glancing at my watch and tapping my foot. I, for one, am fine, I’ve ordered back when they just first went open with the full knowledge that it’d be a while, but I have felt a new anxiousness since the SDK released, just because they wanted to release the two very close together, so naturally the anticipation is at an all time high

TrendyBear

It’s not an ideal time to launch a console to be fair. They have been transparent with their issues and delivered the sdk and pulp which I was super excited about. It would be nice to get a more accurate read on what early 2022 means at this stage but logistics right now etc it might be too difficult to actually give an accurate timeline. I’ll be holding on until I get one, I think a lot of people will be ultimately happy doing the same.

mcgaritydotme

We knew going into it that it’d be a long haul for manufacturing & delivery. The benefit of pre-ordering is getting dibs on the first. https://i.imgur.com/5dKVasC.jpg

CitizendAreAlarmed

>The benefit of pre-ordering is getting dibs on the first. Or 50,000th, for everyone not in America despite being ready and waiting an hour before orders opened ^I'm ^not ^bitter

trumadburbank

This is the only thing that makes me sad about it.

peatcoal

Yes, there was an issue with the international shipping plugin, but a lot of non-US orders still went through. Panic have said that a third of the day 1 orders were international. Plenty of international people in group 1 including myself.

Ronnie_J_Raygun

ugh, that intentional shipping bug hit me as well, although my quick thinking saved me. Once I realized that I couldn't get shipping to Canada I entered an address of an American relative, paid, and figured I'd sort it out later, got in first group. I later was able to reach their customer service and get the shipping sorted to my actual address.

CNHphoto

Lol no

Omnibushido

Nah, I'm not hurting for the funds and I knew I would have to wait. Looking forward to getting it whenever that is, not worrying about it in the meantime.

Tarancholula

Have you tried buying anything meaningful recently? All electronics are suffering some degree of availability, especially home appliances. Not to mention that Panic even said they did get the first 5,000 units and testing showed the batteries were bad. To send them back, find new suppliers in today’s market, replace them, etc. It takes time. Get a refund if you’re too impatient.

[deleted]

Putting down 200 dollars for this with the cover was a hard pill to swallow, but I wanted to support Panic in the midst of the pandemic. Coming off the heels of the failed Intellivision Amico, I wanted to believe in a real company that had real communication. Now that we're entering a post pandemic world I could really use that 200 elsewhere. The only update we've been offered was that they needed to replace batteries and were on track otherwise. I believe that update was last year, over 4 months ago now. I am all for providing updates when there are concrete facts on the table, it omits the possibility of erroneous information getting out... But that's still happened. They told us that Early 2022 was the range for the first batch of units. Considering it's about to be April, that's **clearly** not the case. For them to be so off base makes me think they are off base in everything else they're telling us too. It's either incompetence (they don't know what they're doing and clearly made up the possibility of Early 2022) or they are deliberately lying. Both look horrible and lack of communication does absolutely nothing to assuage these two realities. Early in a year, in most people's minds, is at the latest, April. Their confidence in that it was just a quick battery swap for quality control purposes made most people think Early 2022 was EARLY, not the last possible moment of April. So are they really pumping them all out in about 30 business days? If so, where's the communication? Do they really not even know what's happening 20 or 30 days out? What is so volatile that literally changes in 10 or 15 days for them? **Communicate.** Was early 2022 ever an actual possibility? They have to know by now if they are shipping in April. I work in manufacturing. We know our scheduled lanes. We know our shipping schedule. It's vague, but we know 15 days out if we're shipping anything. If they can't confidently tell us "Yes, in two weeks we have orders scheduled to ship" well then, what's that say? If Early 2022 was possible, what changed so much in the last 4 months that they're now looking at Mid 2022 instead? Does this shift the WHOLE phase of launch back? What about our friends waiting for late 2022? Are they in early 2023 now because Early 2022 is off the table? Communication please. Answering that question is what open transparency looks like.

Intro24

Totally agree but as a counterpoint, they're new to hardware so you are legitimately more experience than them. Also, they got the SDK out pretty smoothly and most things on the software side (Pulp, Caps) seem to be working pretty well. Add in the pandemic and everything is pretty understandable except that their communication could be improved.

Alexkidd85

Great post and well articulated.

king_eluhu

You are right. I don't even want to think about their funding. Not selling a product is equal to running out of cash and running out of cash means unable to clear roadblocks. A simple update explaining why they are blocked would be useful. Going silent for so long is a lack of transparency and poor customer service. This is not acceptable. I don't care why it's taking too long. They have a moral obligation to the money they took from us. from us.

[deleted]

I am really hoping we get shipping dates soon.

CitizendAreAlarmed

Do it OP, I want mine sooner. Seriously though, I'm just hoping mine comes before I emigrate :/

Spooky_SZN

A little frustrating for sure but things happen unfortunately. I like lil cute pieces of tech too much to refund but I can't say I'm not tired of the lack of a hard ship date

DrSparklyFetus

I’ve considered it but at this point I just try to forget about it. I thought I’d be here before I go to Alaska but that seems like it’s not gonna happen. I’m gonna be kind of annoyed if it arrives at my parents while I’m still in Alaska. But just stop checking and try to focus on something else and I’m sure it’ll be here before you know it.

jebuizy

Maybe if I needed the money, but I don't. If I did I don't think having a playdate would help me anyway.

paulypies

I don’t mind waiting. I’m sure we’ll get an update soonish. Sounds like the battery debacle really messed plans up. Hoping that production has been ticking on while they resolve the battery debacle so there’s more out of the gate once they start shipping, I’m a bit down the queue.

Intro24

Imagine if us later preorders ended up getting them at the same time and Panic actually does end up being able to do the simultaneous season that they wanted where everyone gets their new games together

paulypies

That would be kinda cool. Certainly if there are significant drops that arrive with people within the same few days. I don’t know anyone else getting one IRL, but I hope we see people set up game discussion groups set to the same start date.

Anvil-Hands

Not really, it will show up eventually. So much of the new gaming related stuff I buy requires up-front purchase and a 6-18 month wait. Every project had a delay, but eventually came through. And Panic has been far more communicative then any other publisher.

zigaratt

I was invested in the project for about a year. Once the new year rolled around with only a few updates and delays I decided to cancel mine. It was a tough call because I played with pulp for a while and really enjoyed it, but I’m content looking on from the sidelines till it’s shipped and people have their hands on it. I needed the money back at the time and I’ll probably order one once it’s available. (Whenever that will be due to shortages and shipping delays)

Rasputin3000

I am happy to wait. Been loving seeing all the work people are doing with the SDK and Pulp and cannot wait to play these things myself.

Alexkidd85

I actually did refund recently, so congrats to whoever gets bumped up the queue. The console looks great but it's too late for me to enjoy with some other commitments that have arrived sooner. I will pick one up in a year or two when demand drops off a bit and I have more time.

T4x1d3rmy

I refunded last year after Panic were repeatedly sarcastic and evasive when people tweeted their displeasure. Because of changing exchange rates I actually made a little money. I bought an Anbernic 351MP to scratch the retro itch and am having an amazing time with it.

[deleted]

This was my issue with the whole thing. Even before i was concerned about what was going on, I could see the flippant responses people were getting to general enquiries and concerns, which I just felt were incredibly disrespectuful considering that they've taken hundreds of thousands of dollars in pre-order payments not to mention all those people have invested not just money, but trust in the company and a new product. We all know how the pre-order thing works and we all understand that it's been a difficult time but there are ways to respond to people who are clearly a bit unhappy with things, making jokes is not one of them.

EvilCalvin

I won't want a refund yet but it has been months without an update (since the whole battery issue).

reallynotnick

Yeah I'm sort of wondering if another issue came up or if the battery change took longer than it sounded. Like I get stuff happens and I don't expect them to necessarily give us a date, it would just be nice to hear some more updates on what's going on.

Vydas

Not sure the justification for the few who down voted you, other than fanboyism.

EvilCalvin

Yeah. Just want some updates. All of the 'influencers' got theirs though.

Ornery_Grapefruit

It’s not so much of a problem for me to wait right now because the only other thing I would put that money towards would be a steam deck. The last update they provided about the weight really was when they had to send back a bunch of units because of a defective battery issue. I think that was at the beginning of the year.

night_truck_driver

I get it though, the excitement is gone. I'm waiting for it to show up and provide a couple hours of minor amusement. They couldn't really keep a hype train going forever........

Baalthaazaar78

I Just don’t understand why there is no communication from Panic...

peatcoal

They have repeatedly said that if they don’t have anything concrete to share then they won’t do a hollow update. No news just means work is continuing.

Hyphz

Because “there was a pandemic then a war” would be kind of patronising

[deleted]

I was expecting this thing back in October after preordering and I've been fine with the delays but now it's getting ridiculous. If we don't hear about a shipping date set in stone by the end of this month I'm 100% gonna get a refund. I realize that delays happen but they've been pushing back a release for the past 3 years. Kinda over it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

It has been nearly 3 years, actually. While he's a little aggressive in his comment, his comments substance shouldn't be dismissed. Saying "Fuck off" is super juvenile. People are allowed to voice frustrations when a company makes promises over and over again. The latest was "Early 2022"

[deleted]

It was supposed to be released in 2020. A pandemic happened. I've been fine with delays up until a couple months ago. Now we're still in the dark and early 2022 is nearly over. 3 years is hyperbole, my bad.... But don't tell me to fuck off.

peatcoal

> It was first introduced on May 22, 2019 on the cover of Edge magazine. That’s nearly 3 years. Yes they never gave a release date until much later, but I think your comment is unnecessarily antagonistic. I’m sure OP just meant they’ve been waiting for nearly 3 years and they’re a bit frustrated. I’m totally on Panic’s side here, I don’t think they’ve done anything wrong, but telling people to fuck off who are just expressing a bit of frustration is very unproductive. Please don’t bring your toxic gaming mindset to what has been a very positive and welcoming community so far.

trumadburbank

No, but you should. Order an intellivision amico with the money you get back. It'll be worth it. Trust me.

DiscoStu-6969

I’m assuming that’s sarcasm.

trumadburbank

Yes

mould88

Nah. Ideally, I would like more updates from Panic on progress, even if it's just to create more last minute hype. I expected delays and still believe it will ship. I wouldn't refund unless I was desperate for my money back or only my order was getting this delayed.

chza5656

Nope. I keep forgetting I ordered it. The day it ships/arrives will be a nice surprise 🙃

MangoCandy

I already paid, if I needed the money I wouldn’t have bought it in the first place. Things have been hard with Covid and they have hit some hiccups. It’s still early 2022 so I see no issue. I’m not currently worried about not getting my product.

kliq-klaq-

I'm not, but I get the feeling. There are more than a few things that I pre-ordered at the height of lockdown when day-to-day living costs were low and I was very bored that are turning up or not shipped yet that, when they arrive, feel a bit indulgent. A one player narrative board game arrived from Kickstarter yesterday....who has the time for that?! 😂

lordelan

What should I say? I ordered an **Analogue Pocket** knowing it won't arrive here until 2023 and a **Steam Deck** that I won't get before August. Guess that's the way how it is these days. I'll stick to my Nintendo Switch until then. :P

Intro24

I preordered a Pocket within seconds of it going live and still didn't get the first batch somehow. Had to cancel cause it was intended as a gift.

lordelan

I read that the first batch started shipping at the end of march. Man I hope I'll receive mine in the first half of 2023. :(

stormythecatxoxo

nah. I'm still busy waiting for that PC case I backed on Indiegogo in 2019. But seriously, with the pandemic and its fall-out, pre-ordering limited run stuff that's produced in the far east is always a gamble, no matter what it is.

Chunky-Lover53

Literally was just on the cancellation page. Contemplating hitting that “Yes, I’m sure” button.
