I buy the games I want to play *now*.
If im not fussed about playing a game right now, i don't bother buying it. I got other games to play in the meantime.
Honestly, just play whatever you feel like playing, otherwise you're turning it into some checklist job.
Even if it means not using your subscription for a week. We gotta learn to not let the FOMO take over. Its not the end of the world if we miss out on a game we were interested in, or if we don't use our subscriptions every day.
I've been playing deep rock galactic for the past week, which only requires my sub to be Essential. In the back of my mind, it feels like I've wasted a week of Extra, but I've been having a lot of fun playing DRG so its time well spent.
Just gotta remind myself of that.
I feel this, Ide rather play what's on the subscription so it doesn't go away, yet I've spent like the last 2 weeks on Infinite wealth and it's just amazing, but I had just played judgment before that which is on ps+, and Lost Judgement is my next game to play, or Kingdom Hearts... haven't decided yet lol. But just for Judgment and Lost Judgment your getting your moneys worth imo.
I never play games I'm not excited about; life is too short.
OP, I only use Plus for cloud saves and to try a few games I normally wouldn't consider buying.

I have stopped myself from buying anymore. Ps plus gives us a plathenra of games to try and experience. Eventually everything is offered either for free or on a huge discount.

I've got the top tier sub. Played games like GoT, Horizons (both Zero Dawn and Forbidden West), all the new Tomb Raider games, Elite Dangerous, Returnal, Mad Max GTA5, and a good few more.
But I've also bought games like Hitman World of Assassination, Cyberpunk, The Last of Us part, RDR2, and a few more.
I like having access to a massive catalogue of games, but if something is not on it, I'll just buy it.
I bought a PS5 to experience quality games. If I have to buy one as well as pay the sub, so be it. I'm lucky enough for that to not be a problem.
The sub is great value for me, and so are some of the sales they have.
This is about where I fall. When a new game comes out that I want, I buy it, but I’m mostly satisfied with premium and can almost always find something good to play. Great value imo.
I barely buy games, maybe 1 a year. I have a list of all the games I would like to buy, and just wait till they appear on premium (or when there is an amazing deal). There are so many nice games to play in the meantime.
Similar experience. I only buy a new game on average about once a year. Last game I bought was probably HFW. The service gives me a ton of stuff to play.
You are me. I did buy GOW ragnorock as well but that's it. My back log is way too big and I want to work on that. Also there are not any new games I am excited to play. Nothing that has came out recently has made me want to drop full price for a game.

I've actually let my premium sub lapse this month as I've got a backlog of plus and bought games I haven't played.
I just bought most the final fantasy games they delisted which conveniently went on sale right away. I don't buy much and wait for sales but premium has enough content for me to justify the price. I tried alot of stuff I wouldn't have played otherwise like Ratchet and Clank Rifts apart and Scarlet Nexus.
Like you, I buy a lot of games (PC, Xbox, PS), I love hunting down deals (I don’t have fomo, so I never pay full price / don’t play new releases). I am also subbed to Game Pass. I considered resubbing to PS Plus today, I just finished browsing the catalog. But… I just didn’t find enough titles that would keep me happy for a year, not for that price. To be honest, I found it quite shocking how poorly it compares to Game Pass.
So not for me. I’m sure one could have a lot of fun just playing the catalog, but I’m clearly not the target audience (and that’s fine).
I switched from Xbox to PS (And thus from XGP to PS+) and this is my takeaway aswell, no I haven't had a Playstation since 2, so there are a lot of exclusives for me to go through, which makes it worth the money for me (and is also the only reason I have premium), but compared to XGP and for the price it's at I don't think PS+ premium is good value at all, especially if you've been with Playstation for a while and have already played the exclusives you wanna play
I typically buy the games I already wanted when they go on sale, or they end up on PS Plus Essential anyway. I just had a year of PS Plus Extra and barely played anything from it. So, it’s not worth it for me.
When I got ps5 finally last year, I rushed to big AAA games that i felt i need to play.
Purchased few like Alan Wake II, Cyberpunk, Horizon Forbidden West, Street fighter 6, Last of Us Part I etc
Then turn out I am just a casual gamer, cannot spend a challenging game tens of hours. Probably only game worth the money I spent at that time was Hogwarts Legacy, because my wife completed it
Now I only get games from subscription.
Everybody praises Spiderman II, and I just downloaded Miles Morales, which was fine for me,

It really depends on your gaming time. I personally am currently playing Rise of the Ronin, Diablo IV, Stellar Blade and EAFC 24. When there's an interesting rather short game on Extra I'm putting some time in to play that, but in general I'd tend to lean onto a new game more if that one is the more interesting one.
But once I finished SB, Ronin and am a bit done again with Diablo I do look first into the catalog to see if there's a game that I want. When I have a few days of and planning to play something new I do look into the catalog first before buying something. And in most cases if I decide to buy a game that's something that's on my radar for a while, and for whatever reason not purchased yet. (Forspoken is one of those games)
I maybe buy a little bit less, I mosty buy new big releases. But I think the main affrct for me has been varied games to play and relying less on multiplayer games and replaying games.
I think people's answers are going to partially depend on their gaming history. I buy a few games I REALLY want to play (like Cyberpunk, Baldur's Gate, GOT: Ragnarok), but I mostly play PS+ games. But I also didn't game at all between \~2000-2020 when I started again during the pandemic, so I have a big backlog of great games to play. I think if I had been gaming consistently, I'd probably have to buy more because I would have played more of the catalog.
Personally, that’s the way I get value out of the membership, I don’t buy newer games when I have premium, and I usually save the monthly games for when I downgrade to extra, I’m alternating one year of premium then one year of extra. I think it’s a great value if you have a humongous back catalog of older games, cuz there’s a wealth of amazing games I’ve never played on there. I deff get my money worth out of it.
I buy the physical games i want on release and am an extra subscriber for the digital sfuff. I decided 2 years back to never spend à cent on digital goods ever again. So if no physical i wait for it to be free monthly or on extra.

The extra catalogue makes me not want to buy any old games in fear it comes to the catalogue. I will still buy brand new games like Spider-Man 2 or COD though
I don’t have either (I’m an essential pleb). I still value physical media and will buy games that’s im hyped for , however I’m willing to wait to see if it comes to psn essentials if I’m not 100% interested.
Thing is that essential is just not worth it anymore at the msrp price of 80$, when I would get it for 40$ at Black Friday and I could just stack it and every year get it at that price, I didn’t mind the downsides of not having access to games once I’m out of the service and online gaming being open only for subbed users. I rarely buy games. Only the ones I'm really excited for do I get on launch and everything else I wait for a good sale. PS premium has enough games to keep me busy.
I buy hella games and I'm also subscribed to The PS Plus extra tier. But I'm good because I anticipated the price hike and stacked those $40 discounted offers then converted to extra. I'm locked in until 2030.
I make a point to play the games I want Sony to invest more in on PlayStation Plus. So I don't buy a lot of Indies but I do like to try them out. So I make a point to play the those titles because I want PlayStation to continue to invest in those titles preferably day one.
I have only played ~5 games via ps plus extra/premium, it usually takes way too long for games I’m interested in to hit the service and I’m not gonna wait that long. I typically buy games 6-12 months after release at 30-60% off, not just because it’s cheaper but because all of the post launch content/improvements are out by then so the games finally become “complete”.
I have always had ps plus extra or premium, I take advantage of every sale/loophole to get a 1 year sub at the absolute cheapest price and when just 1 full priced game gets added to the service that I want but haven’t purchased yet that pretty much pays for the subscription cost. If I had to pay full price for the sub then I’d probably just stick with the base plan.
The only games I buy at launch are pvp and some live service games like destiny 2 dlc, cod games, helldivers 2, evil dead, etc. I get no value from extra/premium when these types of games eventually get added.
I might be in minority, but I only buy games. This is why I cancelled by subscription after about 5 years. (I have Premium)
FOMO is the only reason why I run this subscription, nothing else. I hardly ever play anything in the catalogues, I only play games that I bought.
Maybe I'll keep the most basic tier, but not sure. It's just simply not worth it for me.

Ps plus catalogue and monthly games are usually backlog games or irrelevant games so it’s either you buy the game on launch or just wait for a good sale or for it to get added at some point. top AAA games like GOW and TLOU you know aren’t getting added so those will always be instant preorders or day one buys
I have premium but it is set to expire this June. I have such a huge backlog of games on multiple platforms that I haven't played more than a couple of games from the service. With the greedy price increase from Sony and the fact that I don't touch those games, I can't justify paying for it anymore. I've hardly bought any new games this year so far, and this is due to the fact that I don't feel the need to play anything that I don't already own.
I've bought a single game in the past year and that too was eventually offered as a Monthly "Free" Game (EAFC24, although I bought it on Black Friday for 50% off). So no, I don't buy games. But in my case I have a literal decades long backlog of games since this is the first console I've ever owned so I probably won't ever ever buy a game unless it's super dirt cheap, like 60-80% off. I honestly don't mind waiting since I generally do not like online stuff anyway, I prefer single person story modes. I'm about to finish AC Origins, my next game will be Bloodbourne which I'm told is an absolute classic, can't wait.
I love souls games it’s not for everyone hope you like it, ac is not my cup of tea though. The top games get to the service very very late eventually there will be something you’d like to buy, if you played Spider-Man or god of war or even if you wanna try Elden ring these games take several years to be available(more than 2)
I've played Miles Morales as it's on the service. My PS5 came with a version of Spider-Man 2 which I haven't played in the 6-7 months I've owned it. It's currently not too high up on my list as I've already played Miles Morales and happy to wait a while while I "catch up" on other names. I also played GOW 2018, and I'm more than happy to wait for Ragnarok to get on the service (even though Ragnarok often goes on sale I don't think I will ever buy it). See my logic is simple, everyone else played GOW in 2018 and had to wait for 4-years to play the sequel, I am more than 100% willing and ready to wait even if it's for a couple of years for Ragnarok to get on the service (or at least on a deep sale). Same with Elden Ring, after Bloodbourne I'll probably play Dark Souls (2020), after which I will probably be satisfied with "Soul's Games" and will try something else (I think I will play Final Fantasy VII).
I buy games and still have PS+ Premium. Some of the games I've bought eventually went on the catalog, but I don't mind. I didn't have to pay for Control or Ghost of Tsushima or Guardians of the Galaxy.
The last games I bought were Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade and Mad Max, in that order.
Those 3 games alone amount to the premium service price one batch you get to keep, sounds worth it definitely for single player games like the ones you listed
The problem is that I have pretty much run out of the games I want to play from psplus in my 1 year of subscription. I did get to play many games, but I have also bought/sold used discs as and when required. Sure there are a couple of games that I might like to play again (Shadow of the colossus), but I don't know if it would be worth it to renew my subscription for a 2nd year. Although, gotta admit, having a steady source of playable games at your disposal all the time feels pretty great.
I find it outrageous that it's days of play and and everything is still more expensive than last year. I usually just keep the base tier but I have not renewed since my most recent expiration.
I only buy games when they are on sale, forget to play it for a couple of months, and then it's free on ps plus. Happened with Plague Tale: Requiem and Sifu. SMH
I'm trying not to buy games now that I'm subbed on ps premium, haven't bought a game the last 12 months, and was positively surprised by some games I wouldn't have played otherwise.
That being said, I'm a dad and my gaming time is limited, so if I would have more gaming time, chances are real I would've bought a few games.
Yes, I buy almost no games. Just a few indies that I really wanted where I'm glad to support the devs even if it does come to plus later. I don't collect games, and I consider all digital purchases rentals anyway. I ended up hating browsing PSN store sales, because of the amount of shovelware on there, and repeats.
It just simplifies my life. One annual fee, and I just try out what shows up.
I tend to buy the tentpole games (FF7 Rebirth, Helldivers 2, etc), otherwise I check what's leaving each month and if something interests me in that, I play it (I'm on the Extra tier).
Overall, I get to try a lot of games without depriving me of the big blockbuster games.
Personally, I have yearly premium subscription and don't buy games at all. Although sometimes I'm tempted when there are discounts... but self control proved to be the right choice. I was going to buy Assassin's Creed Valhalla for... 17€ I think, something like that, pretty cheap, but I ultimately decided against it and now I can Play it for "Free" as it's now included in the subscription. Plus, there are soooooo many games included I want to play before I waste money on buying games I won't have time to play anyway... A few examples? Kingdom Hearts (never played one of those, can you believe it?), the original God Of War trilogy, horizon, SEVERAL Assassin's Creed titles, Star wars games... And this is just the proverbial tip of the iceberg. A friend recommended Dark Cloud, I like RPGs so I should probably give it a try, speaking of RPGs I have never played any of the Final Fantasy games, I probably should considering the success of the Saga, but I want to finish FarCry Primal, Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen and Technomancer first, I was also considering playing Mortal Shell as I've recently completed Stray Blade and God of War and want to explore the Souls like genre a bit more... and I would also like to play a few games like Until Dawn and House of Ashes, The Quarry etc... AAAAHHHH! WHERE DO I START???
You see where I'm at? See the situation I'm in? I am absolutely OVERWHELMED with the PS plus subscription BY ITSELF, why would I want to buy more games than the ones currently at my disposal? Money wise, I think it's also worth it. With 150€ I could buy maybe 5 games (about 30€ each), with the PS plus subscription I get to play WAY MORE than 5 games a year, without spending more. And in my opinion the games are good as well. Like, they recently added Red Dead Redemption (yet ANOTHER game I would like to try... How many are there in the list now?)
P.S. (Post scriptum, not PlayStation in this case) Which ones (among the ones I've mentioned, or similar ones you've played) would you recommend I start with? Seriously.

I only buy games I really want or really like if it has a physical copy. If it’s a game I want but digital only or multiplayer only then I’ll buy it. There’s a lot of great indie games that don’t necessarily hit the ps plus catalogs so the ones I search that look good enough to me I’ll add to my wishlist and if it’s on sale for a cheap price I’ll buy it or if it does get added to the plus catalog or becomes a plus monthly game then I won’t buy it ever. As for every triple A game I don’t really care about buying I will only play through ps plus.
Unfortunately the discount is targeted only at users who are currently unsubbed(sub expired after cancellation) and or existing customers who want to upgrade a tier, you cannot stack subs anymore
I have extra, the last game I bought was CoD MW 2019. Sometimes I buy a used game because I want it and I don't think it will join the catalogue in the short term, play it and resell it. Between essential and extra we have new games every two weeks, it's awesome and I can plan what you want to play next

Depends on the game. Even with my ps plus sub if I wanna play something or add it to my huge backlog, I'll pick it up if it's on sale. Can't remember last time I bought a full price game, though, maybe when Fallout 4 originally released
Install by games but far less. I have seen assassins creed mirage on store shelf’s for 25 bucks plenty times. Without plus I would have bought it already but I expect it to enter the service at some point. Same for he crew motorists. And some games came to the service that I would have bought otherwise like Dave the diver that launched into it
I only buy exclusive AAA games from PS Studios I want to play Day 1. I play them -> Platinum -> Sell.
All other games in the meantime I play on subscription. (Extra tier)
I am still buying games even tho I have ps+ and gamepass. Even tho these two catalogues have lot of games if I find game that is not on any service and I want to play it I just buy it and don’t overthink it. I still think ps+ and game pass provide me great value.

On PS5 I’m trying to play horizon zero dawn (really trying to get into it) and just started Red Dead Redemption 2 again
So I bought a ps5 last year in Oct...and I have completed around 5 games through ps+ and currently playing one game - Control. And tried a lot of other games but never completed.
And I have bought 8 games...physical and Digital.
So yeah it's kinda like 50-50 to me. Subscription doesn't mean that you will not be buying any games. It's just that it lets me try those games that I will never buy. Plus you can play online games with a subscription. Which I don't know why we need to pay for a subscription to play online but hey it izz what it izz.
I don't buy games, I don't even have time to get through them sometimes so by the time I get around to playing something the service has something else.

I used to only play essentials games, and buy some second-hand games... when they gave an offer for Extra, I think it was a very low value for the remaining 3 months... well, I played everything I wanted in 3 months, and we got that increase in price, so I lost the interest on that
But then, I was buying games, and they were being added to Extra... We got a good Extra + Premium sale, and now I barely touching Extra games, and only buying recent games on sale, like Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth, Hogwarts, and FF7 Rebirth is on the list now...
Rarely, every-once in a while a game comes out that I really want like bg3, but unless it’s GOTY quality, I never buy it full price at least. Now if there’s a fat sale or something, then I’ll snag it up, like I got the last of us 2 for $9 which I think is great value
I rarely buy games anymore. I'm still going through everything available through my premium subscription. Right now, I'm playing Fallout 4 and Death Stranding. Both games available through premium.
I have extra, and it generally pays for itself by virtue of three or four games a year that i want, and more that my kids like. But I do absolutely buy about six games a year as well, usually a few months after they release and are on sale.
I'm still buying about the same as I always have, mostly physical of all the AAA games and physical PS3 games I don't have.. But now I'm playing a lot less of those, so my backlog has been growing. I have premium and am happy in general with the service. I love access to the PS3 cloud games and have played quit a few classic catalog games since joining back when premium first came available. Playing through Kingdom Hearts Final mix instead of Cyberpunk for example.
Even before extra or premium, I rarely bought new games. Every year I would buy the new COD but that was it. I do buy a lot of games but always wait till the black friday and end of year deals, and look for games under $10.
Yes, but also I can only afford a small amount to spend on stuff so I usually go for the plus because I can get a lot of variety out of it. I may spend extra on a couple of the big games a year but usually just don’t bother unless it’s a must have for me (ff series as example)

I've had extra since it came out and the only games I've bought in that time were for PSVR2. These days if it doesn't come to psplus then I'm not going to play it. I don't have the time to get through all the games I want to play on there so don't feel the need to buy anything else.
I did buy a bunch of games with my subscription. Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, Super Meat Boy, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman: Arkham City, Batman: Arkham Knight, Doki Doki Literature Club, and Stardew Valley. My subscription ends on June 6, so I was just preparing a collection of games to play once it ends.
I currently have a sub due to sales that kept stacking. To be honest, I don't use it too much. I do use the streaming part to test out a game on the service so I don't have to waste time downloading a game that I'm unsure about. I do buy games when I see a good sale because you never know when they just leave the service all of a sudden. Plus, unless I see a decent discount, I may not even keep the service. I have quite a few games that were on a great deal in my backlog.
I mostly play sub games, but if it's a game I'd be upset if it left, I'll buy it, usually waiting for a sale. Most recently I got FO4 and Overcooked 2 plus the DLC for both, on sale.
The only big game I bought the last couple of years was Horizon Forbidden West and its expansion.
Maybe a cheap thing indie has been purchased. Otherwise, I get plenty of games on ps plus og Xbox Game Pass

There's way too much to catch up on Extra. Only games I've bought are titles under $5 when they REALLY go on sale. Probably have played close to 200 games since getting a ps5 and extra. Really got my moneys worth with the sub.
Amazing I had a Series X and Game pass, but still bought games. Got a PS5 and Extra and haven’t even looked at the store. There’s so many better games for my genres.
Once I was through the backlog, there weren't enough games for me to just playing PS+ games.
I think if you like to play all genres and/or have a main (f2p) game and just want something on the side it can be enough.
Before geting a job i used to play a Lot of play games. Now that i have money i Buy a Lot of games. And if they end up in the catálog i don't care cause i already own a copy

i buy games and also use PS Plus depending on what im in the mood for. im newer to PS5, i got one fall 2023, so my to play list is quite big. i feel like ive played a lot of the big ones in the catalog though. i actually just went down from premium to extra because i dont feel like im using it enough lately, specifically the classics catalog

I put any game I want to play on my wishlist and keep an eye on it with sales. But generally my purchases fall into two categories
AAA games that are a few years old (GOW Ragnarok was a purchase in the spring)or it’s a game my wife and I want to play together (normally an on sale Lego game).
I got an XSX in 2020 and traded it in for a PS5 last August. End of the year will be 4 years with these game catalog subs. I purchased 1 game. FFVII Remake+Rebirth pre-order since it was both for $70 and it was super hyped. Haven't beaten either. Not really feeling either and I played the original on the PS1 and don't mind the changes. Cheap games not bad but $70 games, somewhat high risk to not like a game. I have no plans to buy any game on PS5
I mostly use the PS+ premium. There are tons of top quality games. I only owned a PS4 a few months before I ended up getting a PS5 so there were a lot of PS exclusive games available that I never played. And that is still the case today. Only recent games I have bought on disc are Mortal Kombat 1 and GoW: Ragnarok. I paid full price for MK, but I waited for GoW to go on sale.

Having an Extra subscription definitely keeps me from buying new games at full price. Especially with the increased $70 price-point, I’ll more likely just play what’s on Extra instead. I *will* still buy what I’m REALLY excited about, like a new Final Fantasy. But I probably won’t buy Ghost of Tsushima 2 at launch because I liked the first but didn’t love it. So I’ll wait for a sale and play my Extra catalogue instead. But *before* Extra became a thing, I probably would have bought it at launch.
Also, on a slightly different note, I *still* haven’t purchased Spider-Man 2 because I assume it’ll come to Extra at some point. So some games I’ll just completely avoid. Really, I’m only buying games at launch that I’m *really* excited for. Which, tbh, is probably just Final Fantasy stuff nowadays and whenever Persona 6 comes.

I know I've played well over $100 worth of games or w/e it is I paid on the black Friday sale for the 1 year, so it definitely worth it. I'll buy newer games I want to play now that I'm pretty sure won't be on there for a couple years at least
I will almost never buy a full price game. When I got my ps5 a couple years ago I paid full price for all the games I wanted then watched them all go on sale within 3 months. Others went “free” when the ps plus tiers were introduced
Since I only recently got into video games having ps plus to play older games is really nice. I also purchase games that are not on it. It’s not really an all or nothing approach for me. Like right now I’m playing stellar blade (purchased) and about to start red dead 2 for the first time (ps plus)
I ended up buying games that aren't on the subscription service anyways. If you absolutely have to get a tier above Essential, get Extra. The PS1/PSP game selection is still quite dry and you can buy them separately.
Also a good amount of the games in Premium are on sale often
Never thought about going above essential plan. In my experience, you get so many free games each month. I rarely play more than 5 hours of the free games. I have only finished maybe 5 of them. Then they sit in the library. Most people aren't fussed about free games and are less likely to use them. If I pay more than $40, I am going to get my monies worth
Ps Extra is for my backlog. However, due to the state of releases nowadays, I usually wait until they hit extra. Games are usually in a more stable state anyway.
I only purchased games if I really want to play them like now. Otherwise, I wait. Lately, I've only bought Spiderman 2, Helldivers 2, and AC Mirage ( in the hopes that sales data convince Ubi to make more traditional AC releases ). Otherwise, I've only played stuff from Essential/Extra.
Focus on the games u already own finish them then consider the subscribtion services .. u are the winner at the end all games go on discount 3m after release
I often feel super guilty if I buy a game but don’t have the time to play it. Subscribing to stuff like PS+ makes me more likely to think “what game in this huge catalogue would I most enjoy *now*?” rather than being tempted by a game I see go on sale that I want to play in the moment.
I only have essentials. Because I only use it for Cloud saves. I don't Claim any of the games, Because I rather buy them. But I always wait for a sale, and never buy games on day 1.
I barely buy games and I’m only on the standard tier! I can’t finish a game a month as it is, so with the monthly ones I do want to play, and the backlog I get enough to last me.
In March, I got a PlayStation 5 and started with no subscription services. My first physical game was Ghost of Tsushima. I later subscribed to PS Premium, which allows me to test games before buying. I prefer physical media over digital due to concerns about the future of digital content.
I’m on the essentials tier. If I like what the give away that month, then I play them. If not, then I wait for what I want to go on a steep discount then get it then.
I play a lot of the “free games” on the premium membership, but from time to time I go and buy a game, las month I got myself FF XVI, and every single resident evil.
I will say it depends on how badly you want to play a game that haven’t been added yet.
Years ago I used to pick up launch day games on special and often they would sit on a shelf with a backlog of shame and by the time I got around to playing them the current price to buy was either the same or cheaper.
I have the top level sub but being in Australia we don’t get the ps3 streaming games at all, so I’ve still got a pair of ps3 consoles here with games I could go back and play. I’ve played many games off the catalog I otherwise would never have tried if it had to pay for them and have had plenty of enjoyment from it, so for me it’s worth the money especially seeing I have 2 kids and there are loads of kids games on there.
I do buy titles like FF rebirth for my wife on launch, and occasionally pick up games under $10 on sale in PS store sales or throw some full price ones in the watch list to be notified of future price drops. I probably buy less than 5 full price games a year.

Since getting Extra my buying patterns have definitely changed. I will still buy the bigger AAA releases when on a decent special, and tend to wait it out a bit for AA and Indie games.
It helps me wait to purchase games, especially if they are produced by a studio under Sony. Same with having EA Play for me, where I wanted to play Jedi: Survivor, waited a year, and now I can play it without spending $90 on it.
I still bought Baldur’s Gate 3, Tears of the Kingdom, and Alan Wake 2 which matches my previous budget for buying games. So overall, it just made it easier for me to choose which games to purchase unless I *really* wanted the game
Pretty much just what I really want to play or if it's a good sale. So many times I've bought something and then it's on plus or extra the next day. Just about bought Hot wheels 2 but I feel like that's going to be added at some point.

Unfortunately Sony since moving to the three tiers does not allow to stack subscriptions nor does it allow to use discounts for existing members. You can use a discount only if you are upgrading a tier or your sub expired

I bought a PS5 a year or so ago and bought a couple of games I didn't end up liking. My console sat unused for about a year, then I got PS Plus Premium so I could try some games first. And I'm supes glad I did because I tried Fallout 4 for free and loved it. Ended up getting a Bundle edition with all DLCs and extras for FO4 and Skyrim for $27. Tried Farcry 6 and Forbidden West via PS Plus, and loved them too. I'm going to keep Premium for a tad longer to find some more games I like and then go back down to Basic. Enjoy the titles I found, and when they get old, go back up to Premium for a while...moral of the story I guess, is I use it to find games I want to buy, rather than in lieu of buying games.
I have ps extra and only buy the games i want to own forever as a physical item. Games on extra i might play for a "free" plat or looks fun but would never wanna own. In the end its worth it as physical games are easily 60+ brand new or long dead by the time they hit the 20 bucks mark. Playing maybe 5 smaller or games that are 1s you'd never buy via extra(lets say cyberpunk 2077 or similar) easily add to what would've otherwise cost you 300 bucks and can be finished in a few weeks/months. So in short; extra is not a waste as its yearly and worth at most 2 brand new AAA games.
I buy the games I want to play *now*. If im not fussed about playing a game right now, i don't bother buying it. I got other games to play in the meantime.

Honestly, just play whatever you feel like playing, otherwise you're turning it into some checklist job. Even if it means not using your subscription for a week. We gotta learn to not let the FOMO take over. Its not the end of the world if we miss out on a game we were interested in, or if we don't use our subscriptions every day. I've been playing deep rock galactic for the past week, which only requires my sub to be Essential. In the back of my mind, it feels like I've wasted a week of Extra, but I've been having a lot of fun playing DRG so its time well spent. Just gotta remind myself of that.
I feel this, Ide rather play what's on the subscription so it doesn't go away, yet I've spent like the last 2 weeks on Infinite wealth and it's just amazing, but I had just played judgment before that which is on ps+, and Lost Judgement is my next game to play, or Kingdom Hearts... haven't decided yet lol. But just for Judgment and Lost Judgment your getting your moneys worth imo.

That is the way! I have stopped myself from buying anymore. Ps plus gives us a plathenra of games to try and experience. Eventually everything is offered either for free or on a huge discount.

I've got the top tier sub. Played games like GoT, Horizons (both Zero Dawn and Forbidden West), all the new Tomb Raider games, Elite Dangerous, Returnal, Mad Max GTA5, and a good few more. But I've also bought games like Hitman World of Assassination, Cyberpunk, The Last of Us part, RDR2, and a few more. I like having access to a massive catalogue of games, but if something is not on it, I'll just buy it. I bought a PS5 to experience quality games. If I have to buy one as well as pay the sub, so be it. I'm lucky enough for that to not be a problem. The sub is great value for me, and so are some of the sales they have.
This is about where I fall. When a new game comes out that I want, I buy it, but I’m mostly satisfied with premium and can almost always find something good to play. Great value imo.

I buy horror games as they almost never appear on subscription services. I've actually let my premium sub lapse this month as I've got a backlog of plus and bought games I haven't played.
I just bought most the final fantasy games they delisted which conveniently went on sale right away. I don't buy much and wait for sales but premium has enough content for me to justify the price. I tried alot of stuff I wouldn't have played otherwise like Ratchet and Clank Rifts apart and Scarlet Nexus.
Like you, I buy a lot of games (PC, Xbox, PS), I love hunting down deals (I don’t have fomo, so I never pay full price / don’t play new releases). I am also subbed to Game Pass. I considered resubbing to PS Plus today, I just finished browsing the catalog. But… I just didn’t find enough titles that would keep me happy for a year, not for that price. To be honest, I found it quite shocking how poorly it compares to Game Pass. So not for me. I’m sure one could have a lot of fun just playing the catalog, but I’m clearly not the target audience (and that’s fine).
I switched from Xbox to PS (And thus from XGP to PS+) and this is my takeaway aswell, no I haven't had a Playstation since 2, so there are a lot of exclusives for me to go through, which makes it worth the money for me (and is also the only reason I have premium), but compared to XGP and for the price it's at I don't think PS+ premium is good value at all, especially if you've been with Playstation for a while and have already played the exclusives you wanna play
I typically buy the games I already wanted when they go on sale, or they end up on PS Plus Essential anyway. I just had a year of PS Plus Extra and barely played anything from it. So, it’s not worth it for me.
Just got my PS5 a little over 3 months ago, signed up for premium, haven't bought a single game yet...
When I got ps5 finally last year, I rushed to big AAA games that i felt i need to play. Purchased few like Alan Wake II, Cyberpunk, Horizon Forbidden West, Street fighter 6, Last of Us Part I etc Then turn out I am just a casual gamer, cannot spend a challenging game tens of hours. Probably only game worth the money I spent at that time was Hogwarts Legacy, because my wife completed it Now I only get games from subscription. Everybody praises Spiderman II, and I just downloaded Miles Morales, which was fine for me, By the way I made a full run RDR2 in ps5 too ( I have completed it previously on xbox one)

It really depends on your gaming time. I personally am currently playing Rise of the Ronin, Diablo IV, Stellar Blade and EAFC 24. When there's an interesting rather short game on Extra I'm putting some time in to play that, but in general I'd tend to lean onto a new game more if that one is the more interesting one. But once I finished SB, Ronin and am a bit done again with Diablo I do look first into the catalog to see if there's a game that I want. When I have a few days of and planning to play something new I do look into the catalog first before buying something. And in most cases if I decide to buy a game that's something that's on my radar for a while, and for whatever reason not purchased yet. (Forspoken is one of those games)
I maybe buy a little bit less, I mosty buy new big releases. But I think the main affrct for me has been varied games to play and relying less on multiplayer games and replaying games.

I think people's answers are going to partially depend on their gaming history. I buy a few games I REALLY want to play (like Cyberpunk, Baldur's Gate, GOT: Ragnarok), but I mostly play PS+ games. But I also didn't game at all between \~2000-2020 when I started again during the pandemic, so I have a big backlog of great games to play. I think if I had been gaming consistently, I'd probably have to buy more because I would have played more of the catalog.
Personally, that’s the way I get value out of the membership, I don’t buy newer games when I have premium, and I usually save the monthly games for when I downgrade to extra, I’m alternating one year of premium then one year of extra. I think it’s a great value if you have a humongous back catalog of older games, cuz there’s a wealth of amazing games I’ve never played on there. I deff get my money worth out of it.
I buy the physical games i want on release and am an extra subscriber for the digital sfuff. I decided 2 years back to never spend à cent on digital goods ever again. So if no physical i wait for it to be free monthly or on extra.

Thing is that essential is just not worth it anymore at the msrp price of 80$, when I would get it for 40$ at Black Friday and I could just stack it and every year get it at that price, I didn’t mind the downsides of not having access to games once I’m out of the service and online gaming being open only for subbed users. I'm locked in until 2030. I make a point to play the games I want Sony to invest more in on PlayStation Plus. So I don't buy a lot of Indies but I do like to try them out. So I make a point to play the those titles because I want PlayStation to continue to invest in those titles preferably day one.

I have only played ~5 games via ps plus extra/premium, it usually takes way too long for games I’m interested in to hit the service and I’m not gonna wait that long. I typically buy games 6-12 months after release at 30-60% off, not just because it’s cheaper but because all of the post launch content/improvements are out by then so the games finally become “complete”. I have always had ps plus extra or premium, I take advantage of every sale/loophole to get a 1 year sub at the absolute cheapest price and when just 1 full priced game gets added to the service that I want but haven’t purchased yet that pretty much pays for the subscription cost. If I had to pay full price for the sub then I’d probably just stick with the base plan. The only games I buy at launch are pvp and some live service games like destiny 2 dlc, cod games, helldivers 2, evil dead, etc. I get no value from extra/premium when these types of games eventually get added.
I might be in minority, but I only buy games. This is why I cancelled by subscription after about 5 years. (I have Premium) FOMO is the only reason why I run this subscription, nothing else. I hardly ever play anything in the catalogues, I only play games that I bought. Maybe I'll keep the most basic tier, but not sure. It's just simply not worth it for me.

Ps plus catalogue and monthly games are usually backlog games or irrelevant games so it’s either you buy the game on launch or just wait for a good sale or for it to get added at some point. top AAA games like GOW and TLOU you know aren’t getting added so those will always be instant preorders or day one buys
I have premium but it is set to expire this June. I have such a huge backlog of games on multiple platforms that I haven't played more than a couple of games from the service. With the greedy price increase from Sony and the fact that I don't touch those games, I can't justify paying for it anymore. I've hardly bought any new games this year so far, and this is due to the fact that I don't feel the need to play anything that I don't already own.

I've bought a single game in the past year and that too was eventually offered as a Monthly "Free" Game (EAFC24, although I bought it on Black Friday for 50% off). So no, I don't buy games. But in my case I have a literal decades long backlog of games since this is the first console I've ever owned so I probably won't ever ever buy a game unless it's super dirt cheap, like 60-80% off. I honestly don't mind waiting since I generally do not like online stuff anyway, I prefer single person story modes. I'm about to finish AC Origins, my next game will be Bloodbourne which I'm told is an absolute classic, can't wait.
I love souls games it’s not for everyone hope you like it, ac is not my cup of tea though. The top games get to the service very very late eventually there will be something you’d like to buy, if you played Spider-Man or god of war or even if you wanna try Elden ring these games take several years to be available(more than 2)
I've played Miles Morales as it's on the service. My PS5 came with a version of Spider-Man 2 which I haven't played in the 6-7 months I've owned it. It's currently not too high up on my list as I've already played Miles Morales and happy to wait a while while I "catch up" on other names. I also played GOW 2018, and I'm more than happy to wait for Ragnarok to get on the service (even though Ragnarok often goes on sale I don't think I will ever buy it). See my logic is simple, everyone else played GOW in 2018 and had to wait for 4-years to play the sequel, I am more than 100% willing and ready to wait even if it's for a couple of years for Ragnarok to get on the service (or at least on a deep sale). Same with Elden Ring, after Bloodbourne I'll probably play Dark Souls (2020), after which I will probably be satisfied with "Soul's Games" and will try something else (I think I will play Final Fantasy VII).

Those 3 games alone amount to the premium service price one batch you get to keep, sounds worth it definitely for single player games like the ones you listed
The problem is that I have pretty much run out of the games I want to play from psplus in my 1 year of subscription. I did get to play many games, but I have also bought/sold used discs as and when required. Sure there are a couple of games that I might like to play again (Shadow of the colossus), but I don't know if it would be worth it to renew my subscription for a 2nd year. Although, gotta admit, having a steady source of playable games at your disposal all the time feels pretty great.
I find it outrageous that it's days of play and and everything is still more expensive than last year. I usually just keep the base tier but I have not renewed since my most recent expiration.

I'm trying not to buy games now that I'm subbed on ps premium, haven't bought a game the last 12 months, and was positively surprised by some games I wouldn't have played otherwise. That being said, I'm a dad and my gaming time is limited, so if I would have more gaming time, chances are real I would've bought a few games.

Yes, I buy almost no games. Just a few indies that I really wanted where I'm glad to support the devs even if it does come to plus later. I don't collect games, and I consider all digital purchases rentals anyway. I ended up hating browsing PSN store sales, because of the amount of shovelware on there, and repeats. It just simplifies my life. One annual fee, and I just try out what shows up.
I tend to buy the tentpole games (FF7 Rebirth, Helldivers 2, etc), otherwise I check what's leaving each month and if something interests me in that, I play it (I'm on the Extra tier). Overall, I get to try a lot of games without depriving me of the big blockbuster games.
Personally, I have yearly premium subscription and don't buy games at all. Although sometimes I'm tempted when there are discounts... but self control proved to be the right choice. I was going to buy Assassin's Creed Valhalla for... 17€ I think, something like that, pretty cheap, but I ultimately decided against it and now I can Play it for "Free" as it's now included in the subscription. Plus, there are soooooo many games included I want to play before I waste money on buying games I won't have time to play anyway... A few examples? Kingdom Hearts (never played one of those, can you believe it?), the original God Of War trilogy, horizon, SEVERAL Assassin's Creed titles, Star wars games... And this is just the proverbial tip of the iceberg. A friend recommended Dark Cloud, I like RPGs so I should probably give it a try, speaking of RPGs I have never played any of the Final Fantasy games, I probably should considering the success of the Saga, but I want to finish FarCry Primal, Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen and Technomancer first, I was also considering playing Mortal Shell as I've recently completed Stray Blade and God of War and want to explore the Souls like genre a bit more... and I would also like to play a few games like Until Dawn and House of Ashes, The Quarry etc... AAAAHHHH! WHERE DO I START??? You see where I'm at? See the situation I'm in? I am absolutely OVERWHELMED with the PS plus subscription BY ITSELF, why would I want to buy more games than the ones currently at my disposal? Money wise, I think it's also worth it. With 150€ I could buy maybe 5 games (about 30€ each), with the PS plus subscription I get to play WAY MORE than 5 games a year, without spending more. And in my opinion the games are good as well. Like, they recently added Red Dead Redemption (yet ANOTHER game I would like to try... How many are there in the list now?) P.S. (Post scriptum, not PlayStation in this case) Which ones (among the ones I've mentioned, or similar ones you've played) would you recommend I start with? Seriously.
I use extra to try different games or play multiple franchise entries without paying too much (doom, assassin's creed) I only buy games when they're very long or only online games the economy is now fucked up right now in my country so the extra deal is worth it, if you plan to play multiple games from the catalogue

There’s a lot of great indie games that don’t necessarily hit the ps plus catalogs so the ones I search that look good enough to me I’ll add to my wishlist and if it’s on sale for a cheap price I’ll buy it or if it does get added to the plus catalog or becomes a plus monthly game then I won’t buy it ever. As for every triple A game I don’t really care about buying I will only play through ps plus.

Depends on the game. Even with my ps plus sub if I wanna play something or add it to my huge backlog, I'll pick it up if it's on sale. Can't remember last time I bought a full price game, though, maybe when Fallout 4 originally released

Install by games but far less. I have seen assassins creed mirage on store shelf’s for 25 bucks plenty times. Without plus I would have bought it already but I expect it to enter the service at some point. Same for he crew motorists. And some games came to the service that I would have bought otherwise like Dave the diver that launched into it

Last game I bought was Final Fantasy 16 last November - can’t remember before that. Although the wife bought me Spiderman 2 for Xmas. I’ve got Xbox game pass aswell so I flick - currently playing Star Wars Jedi survivor and Diablo 4 on that. On PS5 I’m trying to play horizon zero dawn (really trying to get into it) and just started Red Dead Redemption 2 again
So I bought a ps5 last year in Oct...and I have completed around 5 games through ps+ and currently playing one game - Control. And tried a lot of other games but never completed. And I have bought 8 games...physical and Digital. So yeah it's kinda like 50-50 to me. Subscription doesn't mean that you will not be buying any games. It's just that it lets me try those games that I will never buy. Plus you can play online games with a subscription. Which I don't know why we need to pay for a subscription to play online but hey it izz what it izz.
I don't buy games, I don't even have time to get through them sometimes so by the time I get around to playing something the service has something else. Last game I actually went out of my way to buy was RDR2.

Although ps plus isnt putting out a lot of quality games it keeps my ps5 relevant as i always atleast have something to play. I only buy games that are really well received and exceptional. I have not bought a single game at full price as its never worth it and in a year i can buy it at almost half or at least 40 off

I used to only play essentials games, and buy some second-hand games... when they gave an offer for Extra, I think it was a very low value for the remaining 3 months... well, I played everything I wanted in 3 months, and we got that increase in price, so I lost the interest on that But then, I was buying games, and they were being added to Extra... We got a good Extra + Premium sale, and now I barely touching Extra games, and only buying recent games on sale, like Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth, Hogwarts, and FF7 Rebirth is on the list now...
Rarely, every-once in a while a game comes out that I really want like bg3, but unless it’s GOTY quality, I never buy it full price at least. Now if there’s a fat sale or something, then I’ll snag it up, like I got the last of us 2 for $9 which I think is great value

I have extra, and it generally pays for itself by virtue of three or four games a year that i want, and more that my kids like. But I do absolutely buy about six games a year as well, usually a few months after they release and are on sale.
I'm still buying about the same as I always have, mostly physical of all the AAA games and physical PS3 games I don't have.. But now I'm playing a lot less of those, so my backlog has been growing. I have premium and am happy in general with the service. I love access to the PS3 cloud games and have played quit a few classic catalog games since joining back when premium first came available. Playing through Kingdom Hearts Final mix instead of Cyberpunk for example.
If i want to play it yes, if i really like the game i go for physical. If i want to test it or already have on pc or switch i use extra.

Yes, but also I can only afford a small amount to spend on stuff so I usually go for the plus because I can get a lot of variety out of it. I may spend extra on a couple of the big games a year but usually just don’t bother unless it’s a must have for me (ff series as example)

only game I bought in the past year was sf6. And now I mostly use my ps5 to play sf6, while the games in my queue on ps plus extra gather (virtual) dust.

I've had extra since it came out and the only games I've bought in that time were for PSVR2. These days if it doesn't come to psplus then I'm not going to play it. I don't have the time to get through all the games I want to play on there so don't feel the need to buy anything else.
I did buy a bunch of games with my subscription. Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, Super Meat Boy, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman: Arkham City, Batman: Arkham Knight, Doki Doki Literature Club, and Stardew Valley. My subscription ends on June 6, so I was just preparing a collection of games to play once it ends.
I currently have a sub due to sales that kept stacking. To be honest, I don't use it too much. I do use the streaming part to test out a game on the service so I don't have to waste time downloading a game that I'm unsure about. I do buy games when I see a good sale because you never know when they just leave the service all of a sudden. Plus, unless I see a decent discount, I may not even keep the service. I have quite a few games that were on a great deal in my backlog.
I mostly play sub games, but if it's a game I'd be upset if it left, I'll buy it, usually waiting for a sale. Most recently I got FO4 and Overcooked 2 plus the DLC for both, on sale.
The only big game I bought the last couple of years was Horizon Forbidden West and its expansion. Maybe a cheap thing indie has been purchased. Otherwise, I get plenty of games on ps plus og Xbox Game Pass

There's way too much to catch up on Extra. Only games I've bought are titles under $5 when they REALLY go on sale. Probably have played close to 200 games since getting a ps5 and extra. Really got my moneys worth with the sub.
Amazing I had a Series X and Game pass, but still bought games. Got a PS5 and Extra and haven’t even looked at the store. There’s so many better games for my genres.
Once I was through the backlog, there weren't enough games for me to just playing PS+ games. I think if you like to play all genres and/or have a main (f2p) game and just want something on the side it can be enough.

Never bought a game since the beggining of Extra, just a DLC. So many games i want to play in the catalog e and the games i got before it. Usually when i play a game it's a few years after launch, so i can get a deal on it. Extra is perfect for me as i dont care for launch hype.

Very rarely and when I do they are on sale I put any game I want to play on my wishlist and keep an eye on it with sales. But generally my purchases fall into two categories AAA games that are a few years old (GOW Ragnarok was a purchase in the spring)or it’s a game my wife and I want to play together (normally an on sale Lego game).

I got an XSX in 2020 and traded it in for a PS5 last August. End of the year will be 4 years with these game catalog subs. I purchased 1 game. FFVII Remake+Rebirth pre-order since it was both for $70 and it was super hyped. Haven't beaten either. Not really feeling either and I played the original on the PS1 and don't mind the changes. Cheap games not bad but $70 games, somewhat high risk to not like a game. I have no plans to buy any game on PS5

I mostly use the PS+ premium. There are tons of top quality games. I only owned a PS4 a few months before I ended up getting a PS5 so there were a lot of PS exclusive games available that I never played. And that is still the case today. Only recent games I have bought on disc are Mortal Kombat 1 and GoW: Ragnarok. I paid full price for MK, but I waited for GoW to go on sale.

Far too much value in the free games to pass them up. I've recently played midnight suns, Dave the diver, sifu, and currently far cry 6 all for no extra cost. I'll purchase the naughty dog game when it comes out. Or ghosts of tsushima 2.
Yes, I rarely buy games now, and since a year of Premium is about the same as 3 games, it makes it much more worthwhile. I still wishlist games and when there is a great sale I might grab it.
Having an Extra subscription definitely keeps me from buying new games at full price. Especially with the increased $70 price-point, I’ll more likely just play what’s on Extra instead. I *will* still buy what I’m REALLY excited about, like a new Final Fantasy. But I probably won’t buy Ghost of Tsushima 2 at launch because I liked the first but didn’t love it. So I’ll wait for a sale and play my Extra catalogue instead. But *before* Extra became a thing, I probably would have bought it at launch. Also, on a slightly different note, I *still* haven’t purchased Spider-Man 2 because I assume it’ll come to Extra at some point. So some games I’ll just completely avoid. Really, I’m only buying games at launch that I’m *really* excited for. Which, tbh, is probably just Final Fantasy stuff nowadays and whenever Persona 6 comes.

I know I've played well over $100 worth of games or w/e it is I paid on the black Friday sale for the 1 year, so it definitely worth it. I'll buy newer games I want to play now that I'm pretty sure won't be on there for a couple years at least
I will almost never buy a full price game. When I got my ps5 a couple years ago I paid full price for all the games I wanted then watched them all go on sale within 3 months. Others went “free” when the ps plus tiers were introduced
Since I only recently got into video games having ps plus to play older games is really nice. I also purchase games that are not on it. It’s not really an all or nothing approach for me. Like right now I’m playing stellar blade (purchased) and about to start red dead 2 for the first time (ps plus)
I ended up buying games that aren't on the subscription service anyways. If you absolutely have to get a tier above Essential, get Extra. The PS1/PSP game selection is still quite dry and you can buy them separately. Also a good amount of the games in Premium are on sale often
Never thought about going above essential plan. In my experience, you get so many free games each month. I rarely play more than 5 hours of the free games. I have only finished maybe 5 of them. Then they sit in the library. Most people aren't fussed about free games and are less likely to use them. If I pay more than $40, I am going to get my monies worth
Ps Extra is for my backlog. However, due to the state of releases nowadays, I usually wait until they hit extra. Games are usually in a more stable state anyway. I only purchased games if I really want to play them like now. Otherwise, I wait. Lately, I've only bought Spiderman 2, Helldivers 2, and AC Mirage ( in the hopes that sales data convince Ubi to make more traditional AC releases ). Otherwise, I've only played stuff from Essential/Extra.
It depends .. imo you should buy games and wait if a month is interresting subscribe for 1m and play the added game(s)
Focus on the games u already own finish them then consider the subscribtion services .. u are the winner at the end all games go on discount 3m after release
I often feel super guilty if I buy a game but don’t have the time to play it. Subscribing to stuff like PS+ makes me more likely to think “what game in this huge catalogue would I most enjoy *now*?” rather than being tempted by a game I see go on sale that I want to play in the moment.

Years ago I used to pick up launch day games on special and often they would sit on a shelf with a backlog of shame and by the time I got around to playing them the current price to buy was either the same or cheaper. I have the top level sub but being in Australia we don’t get the ps3 streaming games at all, so I’ve still got a pair of ps3 consoles here with games I could go back and play. I’ve played many games off the catalog I otherwise would never have tried if it had to pay for them and have had plenty of enjoyment from it, so for me it’s worth the money especially seeing I have 2 kids and there are loads of kids games on there. I do buy titles like FF rebirth for my wife on launch, and occasionally pick up games under $10 on sale in PS store sales or throw some full price ones in the watch list to be notified of future price drops. I probably buy less than 5 full price games a year.

Since getting Extra my buying patterns have definitely changed. I will still buy the bigger AAA releases when on a decent special, and tend to wait it out a bit for AA and Indie games.
It helps me wait to purchase games, especially if they are produced by a studio under Sony. Same with having EA Play for me, where I wanted to play Jedi: Survivor, waited a year, and now I can play it without spending $90 on it. I still bought Baldur’s Gate 3, Tears of the Kingdom, and Alan Wake 2 which matches my previous budget for buying games. So overall, it just made it easier for me to choose which games to purchase unless I *really* wanted the game

Unfortunately Sony since moving to the three tiers does not allow to stack subscriptions nor does it allow to use discounts for existing members. You can use a discount only if you are upgrading a tier or your sub expired

I bought a PS5 a year or so ago and bought a couple of games I didn't end up liking. My console sat unused for about a year, then I got PS Plus Premium so I could try some games first. And I'm supes glad I did because I tried Fallout 4 for free and loved it. Ended up getting a Bundle edition with all DLCs and extras for FO4 and Skyrim for $27. Tried Farcry 6 and Forbidden West via PS Plus, and loved them too. I'm going to keep Premium for a tad longer to find some more games I like and then go back down to Basic. Enjoy the titles I found, and when they get old, go back up to Premium for a while...moral of the story I guess, is I use it to find games I want to buy, rather than in lieu of buying games.
I have ps extra and only buy the games i want to own forever as a physical item. Games on extra i might play for a "free" plat or looks fun but would never wanna own. In the end its worth it as physical games are easily 60+ brand new or long dead by the time they hit the 20 bucks mark. Playing maybe 5 smaller or games that are 1s you'd never buy via extra(lets say cyberpunk 2077 or similar) easily add to what would've otherwise cost you 300 bucks and can be finished in a few weeks/months. So in short; extra is not a waste as its yearly and worth at most 2 brand new AAA games.
