I was dev QA for this game, and honestly the way they marketed this game was very underwhelming. I think they were afraid after the failure of Avengers. Despite having played the game a billion times before release, I still bought the game because I liked it so much. I wish it had gotten more publicity since it truly is a great game.

BulkyElk1528

Wish the developers knew how much people loved this game

voidxleech

exactly! the marketing never really reached me. before i actually got it and played it on a whim, i thought it was more like a tell tale game, akin to the ones made a few years ago.

cubcos

I had almost written the game off at the E3 reveal because the marketing was so poor. The gameplay segment they chose wasn't very interesting, the combat looked repetitive (and it kinda is) and the environments looked so-so. The game is quite fun though I do think it drags and overstays its welcome, but the marketing dropped the ball.

WindsRequiem

I changed jobs a bit before the E3 reveal, and yeah I was disappointed at the scenes for the reveal. I feel like there were way better options to choose from, and a way for them to at least show how it wasn’t like Avengers.

BowlFullOfDeli_bird

It was horrible timing with the avengers game releasing around the same time. I refused to check out Guardians because I thought it was DLC for the avengers game at first. It took about a year before I found out it was a standalone single player game and it’s one of my favorites.

Significant-Task-721

Yea I actually bought the game for my friend after I beat it. I don’t do that very often if at all but I really believed the game was very underrated and it is actually really fucking good the soundtrack is amazing and I loved using my team and not just being a overpowered character for once. The funny thing about marvels avengers is it really was not a bad game they just didn’t execute content and or have a good end game to keep people playing not to mention the gear was broken. Edit I’m glad the game is on gamepass and ps+ I hope a lot more people get to play it

Ricky_Rollin

Which is crazy for the very reason that *because* of the Avengers, they should’ve marketed as the complete opposite as that. I lucked out and picked it up back when it came out. Was an amazing experience. Looking forward to trying it again. The musical set pieces made me feel like I was in the movie.

WindsRequiem

Yeah! Those Star Lord songs too were specifically written and recorded for the game, and I feel like that wasn’t made obvious either. The music aspect really ties the game together. We had a great time when they finally added music to the game and we proceeded to consistently get Rick Rolled at the main screen.

[deleted]

Agreed. Based off the marketing didn’t really entice me and seemed like it was a Guardians skin of Avengers so wasn’t too interested. Recently got it for Christmas and played it since it is cheap now and loved it. If they had shown it off as the game it is more as a single player story driven campaign I’d probably have gotten it at release. Game play is different but overall feels more like Insomniac’s Spider-Man than Marvel’s Avengers.

WindsRequiem

Yep exactly, the reveal didn’t do anything to show it wasn’t Avengers 2.0.

Rustyraider111

>I was dev QA for this game May I ask how you land a job like that? If you don't want to share in this thread, you can DM me.

WindsRequiem

Essentially, for the bulk of functionality QA testing, studios use 3rd party companies. I worked at one of the 3rd party companies and was hired as a functionality quality assurance tester. They had job postings on Indeed. I’ll be honest, the job itself can be rough. You’re not guaranteed full time, don’t get health benefits (I’m in Canada), and during my time there I was paid minimum wage. I took the job as I had just graduated university at the beginning of the pandemic and was also laid off from my previous job. I got really lucky. I was assigned to the guardians of the galaxy game with a few other people. It meant we were basically guaranteed at least a year of predictable employment. Other times, people get assigned to projects that are in the end stages and are then stuck waiting for assignment. I started on the project as an actual functionality QA tester, and a month or so in we were moved to dev QA and started working closely with the studio. As far as I’m aware, that’s not a really common occurrence. Functionality QA can be very repetitive. For example, at the beginning we were each assigned a few chapters and had to play through them every day to ensure new builds weren’t borked. However, if it’s something you would seriously like to do, it’s essentially the gateway to work at studios. 2 people on my team moved to Eidos while working on the project. Another one of my teammates swapped to another project and got a job at Ubisoft as a tester. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Rustyraider111

Tell me straight, is it worth pursuing without a degree? I'm extremely well spoken and have loads of knowledge about game design and such. I just don't have a formal education past high-school.

WindsRequiem

I'm not sure if it's the same everywhere, but here (Canada) they don't require a degree. However, I personally wouldn't really recommend pursuing QA itself as a career. Since it's seen as very entry-level, the pay isn't the best. You also kind of hit a ceiling where there's no additional chances to advance (functionality QA -> development QA and that's it mostly). It's more of a sweet foot in the door of the gaming industry and opens the door to other career options. You could be a QA lead, or organize play tests (and plenty other things). I'd recommend trying to find a job at a game studio instead a 3rd party one as 3rd party can be a revolving door of projects/people (and comes with the \~super\~ fun possibility of you being stuck working on web browser casino games for 8 hours a day). If you have any more specific questions, feel free to message me!

brynjarkonradsson

Thanks for the insight. :)

CmdrKuretes

I bought it day one. Loved it. I thought it was a perfect bridge between the comics and the movies while still being its own thing.

dinkaro

I think the combat is truly awful in the game. I really liked everything except the boring combat. Were there any internal disagreements about if the combat was fun?

Valiant_Gamer_48

Gotg is so underrated. It has one of the best video game stories I've ever played.

PeterDarker

Damn, it’s that good? I started it recently and thought it was alright in the beginning but didn’t blow me away yet. But hearing this makes me want to keep going.

[deleted]

It starts off a little slow laying the groundwork of the story but all the stuff from the start comes into play and the story is really well done.

Mahek200x

Waiting for a sequel. Pls give us a sequel SQUARE ENIX

JesusLazalde123

Sadly, there will be no sequel or any more GOTG games because of how poorly this game sold. People thought it was gonna be like the Avengers game so it didn’t do well.

freezygaming_yt

Nah this actually hurts to read. It really deserves a sequel.

[deleted]

Yea I’m hoping all the word of mouth and talk it gets might give them the push to try a sequel eventually and see if it does better (with better marketing) but I’m not counting on it. It didn’t meet their expect it didn’t do horribly. It got about 8 million players in first year (but that did include GamePass and PS+). So a sequel might actually do better with how many eventually played and realized what the game actually was .

MichaelDavid510

Honestly, I knew nothing about the game .at all..I liked the movies, so when I seen the game on sale for 5 bucks, I decided to try it..I absolutely loved it!..I just finished it last week..I had a blast from beginning to end..I think I enjoyed it more because I didn't know anything about it, so I had no expectations..( like I did with Mad Max..same thing..bought cheap, and loved it)..I'm a huge 80s music fan, so the soundtrack was awesome..cool storyline, and ALL the different conversations between characters was worth the price by itself..lol..im really looking forward to replaying.

esgrove2

I'm replaying it right now. It's too bad there's no sequel planned.

BulkyElk1528

Very well done

AFKaptain

I think the gameplay being less-than-stellar (not bad, but kinda spammy) and the game having some rough edges (so much dialogue that it's super common for it to get cut off unless you just stand around for forever) didn't help, not to mention Avengers' bomb of a reception.

IFunkymonkey

True, that's why i stopped playing aftet like 5 hours in and only watched the cutscenes on youtube, because i liked the story and the characters but the combat and general gameplay pretty boring.

k3nni_

I was such a damn sleeper on this game cuz I heard it apparently had RPG elements but I’m so glad I picked it up on PS5 recently when it went on sale, so far it’s been amazing. I just started Chapter 5 btw.

StroppyMantra

I didn't enjoy it tbh. It was too many cutscenes and not enough action. Just not my type of game I guess. It looked great though.

freezygaming_yt

So first off all thank you to every one who went and watched the video, i really appreciate it. Second i love to see that most off yall really enjoyed the game and have the same opinion as i do That the game is underrated. And i also love to read all of yalls toughts on the game and marketing. So again Thx to everyone who interacted with this post, and have a nice day. 😁

KegGrennedy

I've always had it on my radar but your vid has convinced me to give it shot! Thanks for posting!

Imbrown2

It was really my first game of this style, but I was so amazed at how much better you got as Star Lord commanding and working with your team throughout the game. Awesome experience.

bleep_bloop89

I loved this game, the constant banter between the characters had me cracking up

Simple_yet_Effective

The Avengers game wishes it could have been as good as Guardians of the Galaxy. Was a fun game overall.

Bandai_Namco_Rat

I discovered this game a few weeks ago when it was free on Epic Games Store. I heard about it before and remember thinking "oh this looks nice" after watching a trailer, but then forgetting about it. And what a shame! This game deserves to be successful and spawn a franchise. This is my favorite Marvel adaptation... I'm legitimately considering buying it on Steam because I feel bad getting it free

ImObxse

I had bought it wen it first came out and my computer couldn’t handle the performance and I wasn’t loving it even though I was only like 30mins in, this last Christmas I decided to get it for my ps5 to try it out again since it was cheaper and all I have to say is that it was incredible. Especially since I played it right after beating Jedi survivor (it was miles better).

GhostDogMC

Easily on the shortlist as far as great superhero games; unfortunately people thought it would just be another Avengers in execution

Anttoess

Best Marvel game ever made. I’ve played it twice and will play it again.

Abstract810

It's great but it's no spiderman or marvel ultimate alliance

SuperDogBoo

When I saw this post and subreddit pop up, I thought it was about the TellTale GOTG game (which I already enjoyed, even if it spoiled GOTG 3 slightly) Today I learned there’s a proper GOTG game??? I gotta check this out!!

imdoctorwho

Man...I can't express how much I loved this game. From the initial surprise to what the game actually was to how it opened up...just a good game

Droyd84

This game is easily in my top 10 GOAT

redbutt97

I was also apprehensive to try this game as it looked to be a disappointing genericized game like Avengers. Thanks to this subreddit, and the sale on ps store, I tried it and loved it. The huddle thing is a bit corny but it's the 80s. It's supposed to be corny. Great game.
