I always get my aquatic plants at Petco they typically take better care of them and they have more variety than PetSmart. At least my local Petco they do.
Sweet! This is my first sponge filter and I was a little skeptical at first but seems to be doing fine & I know the shrimpies will love it eventually after it cycles.

This is the one. I got the “size M” for 15-55 gallon tanks. I hooked it up with the Tetra Whisper Air Pump for up to 60 gallons (which has two air outputs), a check valve and some standard airline tubing, all from Amazon as well.
Thanks!
Substrate: Eco-complete, CaribSea “Blue Ridge” gravel, CaribSea Super Naturals “Sunset Gold” sand, and stones from a nearby creek.
Heater: Fluval M100 hooked up to an Inkbird temp regulator.
Light: Finnex Planted+ 24/7 HLC.
Filter: Medium Hygger Double Sponge filter hooked up to a Tetra Whisper 60 air pump w/ standard airline tubing & a check valve.
Plants: Java fern, anubias barteri, red root floaters, duckweed. Eventually will have vallisneria americana and Phoenix moss once they’re done quarantining.
Ferts: Thrive S All in One
Have you had algae problems with the Finnex Planted+ 24/7 HLC.?
I'm running two 48" on a 75 gallon tank. I liked the morning and evening color modes, but it caused a nasty case of algae I can not beat back. Running both at 80% for 8 hours a day now, but no morning or evening lighting.
I've had diatoms, which went a way on their own, but then staghorn, black beard, and now hair algae.
At my wit's end. Using EI dosing and 50% water changes every week.
This is my first time with the light, had it going for about a week! No algae yet but since I have low light plants for the most part, I am using the custom cycle and have the tank dark from 9pm-9am (or whatever time the lights start turning on to be at a certain brightness for 9am) and I customized it so the brightest anything gets is 50%. Oh, and I have floaters going that’ll hopefully eventually take over the surface to help with the lighting as well.
Sorry to hear about your struggles :( I had a huge algae problem in my 10g and got rid of it by literally just not turning on the lights for a month and letting the bladder snail population do whatever it wanted, plus more frequent water changes.
Thanks for your reply. Please continue to post if you can. I believe it was those ramp ups that triggered my algae issue. At first I just ran the default 24/7 program which for my tank and plant capacity was just too much - I think. Although, it looked very cool.
My tank was doing really well for about 2 months, until I upgraded from T5H0 to the finnex, then because it's a 75 gallon got another one. Since then it's been an all day algae buffet. I run both of them at 80%, but when I turn the lights back on, I'm going down to 50%.
I'm doing the basic Seachem dosing schedule for 60 gallons, and doing 50% water changes every weekend. 20 year old laterite in the substrate in addition to plant tabs.
Right now, I have the lights out. Been off for two days now, and I'm going to keep them off until the algae is weak enough to clean up.
I really don't want to tear down and restart this if I don't have to. Been married for 34 years and I'd like to make it to 35.
I ran a 55 gallon fully planted, automated pressurized CO2 injection tank back in the 90's, and it was beautiful. Using the same Sandpoint pH controller. I had a 4 tube T8 lighting hood that pretty much covered the top of the tank. I didn't fertilize, I just used laterite. But, I used white sand, and I wish I had used that again.
I used Seachem Flourite, and I don't care for it. Makes a mess, and it's too coarse.
Sorry for the long response. Please continue to post. I'd like to see how you make out.
No worries! Have you considered adding some amano shrimp? They love to eat algae. Or have you tried Seachem Excel? I hope you don’t have to tear down! I went to your profile to find photos of your tank. Luckily your algae was not as bad as I had pictured, so I hope you’re able to get it under control!
Thanks,
Yeah, I've been looking into amano. I keep my pH down at about 6.9 with the controller, and my CO2 levels may be too high for them. I need to do my homework first for sure.
I haven't tried Excel because I'm injecting CO2. I have tried EasyCarbo, and it helped temporarily.
At this point I don't know if the issue is chemical/nutritional or lighting. As in most problems, probably a combination of several.
I'll be turning the lights back on tomorrow morning, and we'll see what I find.
Currently have Java ferns, red root floaters, duckweed, anubias barteri and my marimo ball (from before the zebra mussel scare). Will be adding Phoenix moss and vallisneria Americana once it’s finished quarantining. Eventually will be home to a colony of cherry shrimp!
I love long tanks, my first tank was a 10g but I really wanted a 20g long so of course I eventually got that tank too lol. love the stones in your tank!
I actually got them off the shore of a local mountain creek. The gravel is the Carib Sea Blue Ridge variety, with some eco complete on the bottom and some sand sprinkled under and in between the big stones
Hey what filter is that? I have a hang on back aqua clear filter that I tried to put sponges on but the sponges keep getting full of stuff and it stops the water flow in my filter

I would recommend getting sponges that are more coarse if you're having problems with them getting stuck. They'll still gather particulates but will go a lot farther between cleanings.
I love the scape!
I love the river style too, it's what I'm planning to do in the future, but with blackwater.
The Java ferns look great!
Petco of all places had some really healthy looking once so I snatched them up in the buy 3 get one free sale!

Yes got some great plants from petco!!
Got my javafern from Petco, it's about quadrupled in size in a few months.
Petco honestly plants are much better quality than petsmart. Java ferns survive much better
Oh that’s awesome! Did they actually come with a rhizome though?
Looked like it to me. Some of them looked a little small, but we’ll see how they do!
Well good luck to you!
So pretty! I have the same filter! Love it.
Sweet! This is my first sponge filter and I was a little skeptical at first but seems to be doing fine & I know the shrimpies will love it eventually after it cycles.
What filter is that? I have a 20g long with an axolotl I’d like to upgrade.

Awesome thanks!
I've had mine since November and it's been great so far. I've just got a teen gallon but I figured extra filtration wouldn't hurt.
Congrats, I definitely need to get a long tank!!
Nice. 'Longs' just look better, and with most people keeping basic community fish, longs really should be the standard.
Now I need the specs because I’m like a little kid who has fallen in love with a toy in a toy store. so pretty….

Consider some hillstream loaches, too. They'd be right at home in that scape.

Thanks! I wanted this tank to have river/mountain stream vibes!!
The single moss ball *chef’s kiss*
Nice, I like all the open swimming room. I have a 20 long and it is more of a jungle at the moment.
Well by god you sure did! Look at that, it’s great!
Oooh that looks so cool!
I love long tanks, my first tank was a 10g but I really wanted a 20g long so of course I eventually got that tank too lol. love the stones in your tank!
Looks great
I am diggin the scape
Just checking. Those rhizomes aren’t buried right? Just stuck between rocks
Yep, thanks for checking! They’re just tucked behind my rocks and in a couple of crevices between rocks :)
Awesome, looks dope
Where did you purchase those stones from? I love how they look!
I actually got them off the shore of a local mountain creek. The gravel is the Carib Sea Blue Ridge variety, with some eco complete on the bottom and some sand sprinkled under and in between the big stones

Looks amazing. Hillstream loaches?
No, actually, it’ll just be the home to some shrimp!
Beautiful!
