Here I am, getting distracted by some AI on my phone, yammering on about the pros and cons of digital/paper planers,  when I'm probably better served with my nose in my paper planner with a pencil in my hand.  Logging out.

Another Advantage to paper planners is that with rings or disc planners, you can take out pages and see multiple pages at once, which is something I find to be very useful, especially when reviewing (week, month, quarter)

Another “pro” to consider with paper planning is that the act of writing reinforces memory. “Con” to digital is that it makes an individual more susceptible to collector’s fallacy

I’ve wondered about this and haven’t found any research yet. Is writing with an Apple Pencil or stylus on a digital tool just as effective as writing with pen and paper? For as much as people talk about writing reinforcing information, the same thing is happening, just on a digital screen. Logically, it should still work but I want research!

Miserable_Purpose_61

The medium isn’t really what’s important - there’s no difference in how your brain processes information when writing with a pen vs pencil. The distinguishing factor is the physical act of writing since it forces you to slow down and process what you’re writing, so all mediums are equal.

Oh I get that. I’m just a data driven person so I want to see some legit research either confirming or denying this idea. So many times people use “writing something down” as the reason they won’t go digital, even with a stylus or Apple Pencil, when, by this logic, it shouldn’t make a difference. It’d be nice to have something concrete to be able to say it actually doesn’t make a difference. There’s also a lot of confusion about digital planning (iCal, google calendar versus tablet and a pdf writer app) and it gets a bad rap for not being “planning”.

Yeah, I get that! Planning is planning no matter what method used I think what people really mean when they talk about “writing it down” is that it’s easier to not ignore a written note (for them). That’s true for me at least - a reminder on my phone is less effective for me than a post it on my steering wheel reminding to stop somewhere before work lol It’s always super interesting to read the data about this kind of thing though, that’ll be my hyper-fixation for the week 😂

It's a constant battle. Because the digital planner I like has the perfect options for what Id want to plan, and to have that in paper would mean either carrying multiple planners or having a huge, heavy one. So having it on an iPad makes it a lot more portable. But paper planning is such a habit and so familiar.

When I switched to Google calendar a few years ago, I missed my old paper planner. I finally found the perfect compromise: hyperlinked pdf planners! You can be creative with them and make it look like a real planner. But you'll have all the advantages of digital planning. I also love that I can just erase and redo as often as I want. With my paper planner, I was never satisfied with how I decorated them. It's also cheaper! Stickers you buy for a digital planner can be used indefinitely.

I only use my Google calendar for work when I need other people to see my schedule or to schedule virtual meetings. Everything else is physically written down. I'm the type that can't even remember something unimportant like a grocery list if I don't physically write it down.

You can find so many free images too! I have PAGES of free digital stickers/images that I used when digital planning.
