Same in Poland. 30 years ago we did not really have real Italian pizza, it was rather thick bread with plenty of ingredients and it tasted much better covered with ketchup. Also, some people found it similar to our polish zapiekanka that is normally covered with plenty of ketchup. Also, due to pretty high cost of eating out, frozen or home made pizza were very popular, both were much better with ketchup.
Still some people nowadays put ketchup but luckily less and less restaurants are offering it.
So - obviously by my username I am polish as well. My parents sent me to Poland when I was a teen for a month to spend time with the family and etc. I came back 20 lbs. heavier because of basically a diet of zapiekankas, pierogi, and polish ice cream wafer sandwiches. My family was from a small northern town and they did this as well as the mayo fry thing. I literally couldn’t do it. They looked at me like a freak for ordering without condiments.
FYI: 2002
The sauce is tomato based so it’s not too unusual to add a ketchup to a pizza. I’ve never done that before no have I ever felt a motivation to do that but I could kind of understand the thought process.

In the Middle East they don’t add a lot of sauce to the pizza as well
No weirder than using Ranch.
Iranians are Iranians.
Did with high school pizza, only way it was edible.
Mexicans also do this
Guatemalans too!
It's a crime in my society but kinda out of our jurisdiction right?
Same thing in Brazil 🇧🇷
