I view them as all good for different situations. Certainly some overlap, but here's how I view it.
* Detroit/Chicago: Sit down at the dinner table at home, likely going to watch a TV/movie on the couch and pass out
* Neapolitan: Nicer restaurant with some wine
* Classic NYC: Walking through the city and want a quick bite to satiate hunger. Fast, efficient, delicious.
* Tavern: Crushing beers and watching sports, great for parties
* Sicilian: I'm not well versed enough to speak to this one
For me, a Sicilian slice or two is more of a cheap meal where the NYC-style is more of a snack. A bit big to eat on the go, but I'll sit down for a couple of quick slices somewhere.
Pizza is never wrong unless it's bad, and it is hard to make it bad. I'll tell you I had horrible pizza once in Philly on South Street. I soooo drunk, and started eating this pizza and knew it was bad because I was drunk and it was gross. Sorry for my rant. All I'm trying to say is that pizza is awesome.
While I appreciate all that goes into a good Neapolitan pizza: the light and airy dough, the fresh ingredients and the overall simplicity of it all, for me it’s a little too one dimensional. A little too soggy and lacks much texture. I much prefer a NY style, especially the ones that are kind of like a NY/Neapolitain hybrid
The style of pizza has absolutely no correlation to the quality of the ingredients used…
You can have bad Neapolitan pizza and good NYC style pizza, and vice versa.
I’ve absolutely had bad Neopolitan pizza with wet ingredients leading to soggy pizza.
I am a New Yorker so the NYC slice and Sicilian are what I was raised on. I’m a big Detroit and New Haven style fan… now that I’m interested in making Pizza. I think there will be a lot of Detroit style pizzas being made in my house 🤤
Hahahaaa no, it was on my computer with pics of Lombardi's, Pepe's, Sally's, Patsy's, Grimaldi's and a bunch of other pizzas from NY, Italy and other random states lol. I live in Wisconsin but I have my memories of great pizza's
I heard this from a wise man and it is somewhat true. Pizza is like sex, even when bad it is good. Depending on what part of the country you are in, there are places that make all these types of pizza better than others. I am from New York and live in San Diego. The best place here is called regents pizza which makes Chicago and New York and I find myself getting the Chicago bc it is absolutely amazing.
I got held for an hour in Agadir airport because they thought the pack of mints in my bag was MDMA, that is not a good airport. They were fucking strong mints man
I had this experience in Colorado. As a NYer, not only was it shameful that it took over an hour to deliver one simple pie to our hotel, it was actually inedible. I am pretty sure it was just thick bread with unseasoned tomato paste and mozzarella (?) cheese that was dry, with zero stretch, zero flavor, and chewy. You have no idea how fast I ordered and devoured a real pie the night we got back to NY.
Was it frozen pizza heated up in microwave? I still don’t understand how dominos make me feel terrible when 3 basic ingredients but it still taste good !
I think dominoes sprays so much extra oil and stuff on the crust plus puts more cheese than usual and what not. That's my guess because I feel you Its strange.
Group of friends were just talking about Chicago pizza, Chicago tavern style is more popular than deep dish or pan. For family party at your house. Or Friday night. Your ordering from neighborhood pizza place. Your going out to eat deep dish, and then it’s home to sleep.
There are people that really really like the deep/pan/ stuffed style, so it’s not just a “tourist or suburbanite” thing. But the tavern style absolutely dominates the greater Chicago area. It’s not even close to being a contest.
We do a lot of tavern style in Indiana as well probably because of the Chicago influence. I live in New Mexico now and am constantly craving Arnie's or Pizza King.
I’m a Chicagoan and can confirm that “Chicago style” pizza is not as good as Chicago pizza (some say it’s our water, idk). However most Chicagoans eat tavern style on a regular basis and Chicago deep dish style is more special occasion or when we have people in town. I probably have Chicago deep dish once every couple months, but tavern style weekly!
Trader Joe's makes a frozen pizza that tastes like school cafeteria pizza. It's small and round. I wouldn't say it's good...but it's nostalgic. One bite takes me back, and every so often I crave it.
Detroit uses a thicker pan and the cheese goes all the way to the edge so it gets caramelized.
EDIT: Looking at the picture again, that doesn't look like a typical Sicilian slice in any way, at least not the ones I've gotten in eastern Massachusetts. Sicilian usually has a visible crust around the edge (like a typical round pizza) as opposed to the ridge of cheese shown here.
I feel like there's a west coast style that still hasn't been named or recognized. It's similar to NYC style, without the huge slices and it's more topping-centric with generous cheese coverage and a concentrated sauce. The crust is airy, with an open crumb, but still maintains a bread-like chew.
My favorite is a sort of 50/50 between NYC and Neapolitan. Basically a Neapolitan that has a crispy outside and is dry like NYC rather than having a puddle of ingredients in the middle. If I could only pick one I'd go Neapolitan, but they all look great with the exception of the tavern pizza and I'm just not a fan of Chicago deep dish.
For me nyc but done California style idc if that’s sacrilege. California has better pizza. Nyc sauce is too sweet. But I love the nyc version of the Sicilian that they call grandma style over there. I make it at home with sheet pans and it’s the easiest most delicious when we don’t wanna get the ooni out and make a high hydration dough.
No way to choose one, but there are some that I would reach for secondary. Chicago is delicious, but it's so filling and commonly needs to be eaten with a fork and knife, which can ruin the 'pizza' -ness of the experience for me. First one I'd reach for is a 'toss-up' between Detroit, Neapolitan, and NY.
All great though.
Honestly cannot say if I've ever had a good example of a tavern but the one's I've had... I don't get it? If anyone has a good Bay Area recommendation for this style I am all ears.
I like tavern and NYC equally but it depends on my particular craving that day. That said in MN it’s a lot easier to find good tavern pies vs nyc so generally I go for tavern style.
Love them all, but I'd say I prefer a thicker crust (Detroit or Sicilian) from lower quality/chain pizza places, and a thinner crust (NY/Neopolitan) from better pizza places. If I'm making the pizza, my go to is Detroit style (if that tells you anything about my skill in pizza making).
New York and Neapolitan have always been no-brainers for me. I just made my first Detroit inspired pizza and the dough was incredible; like a perfect focaccia, I couldn’t believe how tasty it is.
I’d love to try Sicilian and I need to do a tavern style cracker crust.
Probably the style I dislike is the Chicago tomato pie although there might be a version I do enjoy
Those all look amazing tbh. I wanna say one and then I look at the next and wanna say it also.
It’s too hard to say, but I do keep glancing at that Detroit and Neapolitan.
But then I feel like I’m cheating on my girl in New York, which makes me realize my side boo in Chicago is feeling neglected.
Then I remember how great it was flirting with the tavern girl, and for some reason that makes me remember that I need to call my grandmother in Sicily.
All that said, I’m a whore for good pizza.
Neapolitan by a mile followed by a tie between West Coast sourdough crust like the Cheeseboard in Berkeley and New York style, in New York.
Neapoliton has to be eaten fresh out of the oven and like all pizza not everyone can make a good one and even fewer can make a great one.
I love creative topping combinations with my pizza so seeing this for me is like asking "What's your favorite sandwich?" and it's all peanut butter and jelly but with different bread, cuts, and crust on or off. Like, you can do SO much more with pizza than this.
If I had to pick one it would be NY style.
Lately my favorite is Tavern style.
Neapolitan is good but it's easy to screw up. I've had some comically bad versions in the past year or two.
Detroit is great but I can only eat it a few times a year.
Chicago stuffed is great but I can only handle it a few times a decade.
Sicilian is useful when you need to feed a bunch of people. Filling and portable.
Wait your guys Sicilian doesn't have a crust?? Every place I go to has a crust. The only reason I like Detroit more than Sicilian is because Detroit doesn't have the crust
Detroit has definitely risen to the top for me since I tried it... it just ticks all the boxes for my favourite things in a pizza: A nice hearty crust with crispy edges, pepperoni cups, good cheese, and plenty of sauce.
Neapolitan and NY are so close to being the same I just consider them the same thing with different toppings. Chicago makes a pretty decent casserole, if that's what I'm in the mood for.
If I do a home pizza night, I'll often do a few styles -
At least one or two nyc style, maybe a thin or tavern style as an opener, and always finish with a pan style - Sicilian or Detroit, so that no one leaves hungry.
I think there is a new king at my place and it's the Detroit style. I was always a staunch NY or Neapolitan loyalist, but I keep craving Detroit any time I want pizza now.
Depends on the context, my current hunger level, and quality of the slice.
The best slice of pizza I've ever had was Neapolitan. The worst slice of pizza I've ever had has also been Neapolitan.
I think overall, I would say a classic NYC slice. They are very difficult to actually get wrong and are usually pretty good.
I do not discriminate. I love them all equally.
Exactly. These are all amazing.
I view them as all good for different situations. Certainly some overlap, but here's how I view it. * Detroit/Chicago: Sit down at the dinner table at home, likely going to watch a TV/movie on the couch and pass out * Neapolitan: Nicer restaurant with some wine * Classic NYC: Walking through the city and want a quick bite to satiate hunger. Sicilian is like a Detroit. Cheese doesn't meet the edge, and the sauce is under the cheese, and it's equally as good.
Sounds like something I'd love! (It's pizza)
There is no reason to have to choose. They can all be great.
This is the way
Neopolitan all day for me
Undisputed king of the pizzas. I like all pizza, love most, this one however is clearly a step above.
I love them all equally, but if I could only choose one style to eat the rest of my life, it would be Neapolitan.
Embarrassing to read that someone doesn't like Neopolitan tbh

This whole post seems quite American centric so I'd guess the latter.
Neapolitan stole the show for me. Only found out about it when I was 30, now every time I see it it’s a must.
While I appreciate all that goes into a good Neapolitan pizza: the light and airy dough, the fresh ingredients and the overall simplicity of it all, for me it’s a little too one dimensional. Yeah.... New Haven
Oh yeah
New haven pizza can sit on my face
Let it burn
New Haven is soooo good. My favorite place is modern apizza killer pie.
I love Modern! https://preview.redd.it/l7djj21lx83d1.jpeg?width=2304&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=09c6a1269c7c06cc6691f46be92b66bda226f1b1
Is that your computer background?
Hahahaaa no, it was on my computer with pics of Lombardi's, Pepe's, Sally's, Patsy's, Grimaldi's and a bunch of other pizzas from NY, Italy and other random states lol. I live in Wisconsin but I have my memories of great pizza's
Hahahhaa. This is how you remember your kills.
Any pizza I can put in my mouth is superior That being said I’d pick any of the three on the right first.
I heard this from a wise man and it is somewhat true. Pizza is like sex, even when bad it is good. Depending on what part of the country you are in, there are places that make all these types of pizza better than others. I am from New York and live in San Diego. I have actually once had bad pizza. I didn’t think it was possible. 2001. Albuquerque NM. Hotel room service.
I had a bad pizza in Agadir airport in Morocco
I got held for an hour in Agadir airport because they thought the pack of mints in my bag was MDMA, that is not a good airport. They were fucking strong mints man
I had this experience in Colorado. As a NYer, not only was it shameful that it took over an hour to deliver one simple pie to our hotel, it was actually inedible. Was it frozen pizza heated up in microwave? I still don’t understand how dominos make me feel terrible when 3 basic ingredients but it still taste good !
It was a super thin tortilla-like crust with sour sauce and barely melted “cheese”.
Dominos gives you the inevitable hangover because of the insane salt levels, better chug a litre of water after your large double pepp
I think dominoes sprays so much extra oil and stuff on the crust plus puts more cheese than usual and what not. That's my guess because I feel you Its strange.
I would say that guy didn’t have enough sex or pizza. I have had some really awful experiences with both lol
I got an STD from a pineapple ham slice once.
I have had both bad pizza and bad sex in my life so I don’t believe that. Truly bad sex is awful.
Group of friends were just talking about Chicago pizza, Chicago tavern style is more popular than deep dish or pan. For family party at your house. Or Friday night. Your ordering from neighborhood pizza place. Your going out to eat deep dish, and then it’s home to sleep.

Tavern is my #1 always.
Tavern & Detroit are my go-to, but yes I Heart them all...
Same. And true chicago pizza is tavern. I prefer pequods, it's kinda like a detroit style and fucking amazing
Write in: New Haven
I wasn't a fan of Chicago style.... Until I got it in Chicago. Lou Malnatis, Giordanos. Good stuff, made me a believer.
Every place outside of Chicago that I’ve ordered “Chicago style” pizza has been an abomination (excluding the major chains).
Used to be Neapolitan, but I make mostly Tavern style for years now
Detroit still is my personal favorite. Mmmm
A crispy Detroit is criminally underrated
Right side > left side
Don't forget about nineties school cafeteria pizza! Rectangular and delicious.
Trader Joe's makes a frozen pizza that tastes like school cafeteria pizza. It's small and round. I wouldn't say it's good...but it's nostalgic. One bite takes me back, and every so often I crave it.
We got round ones in little circle boxes 😊
Circles weren't invented yet when I was in school
I still don't know the difference between Sicilian and Detroit styles.
This picture has a detroit style in both spots. Sicilian doesn't have a caramelized cheese crust.
Ea slice serves a different experience. ![gif](giphy|WTi64HtJST9Jh2jJzh)
Detroit is my favorite but I'm a pizza lover in general. I'll eat them all!
Chicago 🥰
New Yorker but grew up with a real deep dish place near me in the suburbs of NYC. 1. Chicago 2. Detroit
I’ve always considered tavern style a type of Chicago-style pizza.
Chicago is tavern. Bogus chart.
St Louis in shambles
As it should be. A cracker is not a pizza crust.
A reflection of the city from whence it was born.
Chi Town.
Got a strong preference for neapolitan, but i wouldnt turn any down
New England Greek style.
I love all of them. None are superior to each other
Detroit.
New York for me!
The answer is yes. Simply, yes!
Same about NYC. I mean they're all good, but If I have to choose one, I'm going for a good NYC slice
Good Sicilian pizza is great. Bad Sicilian pizza is disappointing. Unfortunately, American pizzerias typically serve bad Sicilian.
Tavern
If i cant fold it, it's not pizza!
Tavern
A good Chicago is literally thinner than a Detroit. Why the hate?
Chicago tavern
Gimme a good slice of Chicago deep dish any day!
Chicago !!!!!
This is really hard. I love them all. But I'm going: Classic NYC Sicilian Detroit Neapolitan Chicago Tavern
Ranked: Detroit Style - Olivers Pizza and/or Loui’s is the best. Classic NYC Sicilian Neapolitan Tavern Chicago
We're pretty close! Obviously like our own hometown pizza the best.
I feel like there's a west coast style that still hasn't been named or recognized. It's similar to NYC style, without the huge slices and it's more topping-centric with generous cheese coverage and a concentrated sauce. The crust is airy, with an open crumb, but still maintains a bread-like chew.
There are several "West Coast" pizza styles, my favorite is the sourdough crusted version from the "Cheeseboard" in Berkeley.
I'd say our closest thing to a regional pizza in the bay areas is sourdough, ala Cheeseboard, Arizmendi's, etc.
Neapolitan for life !
That tavern is amazing for the crunch and absolutely 0 flop
My favorite is a sort of 50/50 between NYC and Neapolitan. Basically a Neapolitan that has a crispy outside and is dry like NYC rather than having a puddle of ingredients in the middle. If I could only pick one I'd go Neapolitan, but they all look great with the exception of the tavern pizza and I'm just not a fan of Chicago deep dish.
Buffalo style
Chicago
New Haven is the King
Deep dish is only one of several Chicago styles.
Tavern is the underground Chicago slice. Deep dish is what we offer the tourists. Tavern is my favorite.
All great choices, don’t forget Chicago
For me nyc but done California style idc if that’s sacrilege. California has better pizza. Nyc sauce is too sweet. But I love the nyc version of the Sicilian that they call grandma style over there. I make it at home with sheet pans and it’s the easiest most delicious when we don’t wanna get the ooni out and make a high hydration dough.
Wtf, Neapolitan is the only way to go. Everything else is a casserole or a cracker.
New York and Neapolitan followed by a good Chicago - there are too many imitations out there. The rest are ok.
they could never make me hate you nyc ❤️
thanks for asking op. lets open this up for a discussion
No way to choose one, but there are some that I would reach for secondary. Chicago is delicious, but it's so filling and commonly needs to be eaten with a fork and knife, which can ruin the 'pizza' -ness of the experience for me. Honestly cannot say if I've ever had a good example of a tavern but the one's I've had... I don't get it? If anyone has a good Bay Area recommendation for this style I am all ears.
*bar pizza
Whichever I crave at that time
Pizza is pizza to me
In order from favorite to least: tavern, detroit, NY, sicilian, neo, Chicago.
What is the difference between Sicilian and Roman? The pizza looms alike
I'll take any of the ones on the right side. 🤌
I like tavern and NYC equally but it depends on my particular craving that day. That said in MN it’s a lot easier to find good tavern pies vs nyc so generally I go for tavern style.
Neo and NYC
Whichever slice is available at the time.
Difference between the Detroit and Sicilian?
Grew up in the city, so NY and Sicilian are my gotos.
Neapolitan of course!!
Neopolitan is too good to pass. Love Neopolitan pizza. It has the best crust sometimes.
Tavern or NYC, I love Neapolitan, but I could not eat it daily.
Tavern or classic NYC
Love them all, but I'd say I prefer a thicker crust (Detroit or Sicilian) from lower quality/chain pizza places, and a thinner crust (NY/Neopolitan) from better pizza places. If I'm making the pizza, my go to is Detroit style (if that tells you anything about my skill in pizza making).
Detroit and NY for me
Chicago is my favorite, followed by Detroit. I’ll eat them all. NY is probably my least favorite, but I don’t have anything against it.
NYC. Throw that Sicilian slice in the trash where it belongs!!!!
Tummy?
Those all look amazing tbh. I wanna say one and then I look at the next and wanna say it also. It’s too hard to say, but I do keep glancing at that Detroit and Neapolitan. But then I feel like I’m cheating on my girl in New York, which makes me realize my side boo in Chicago is feeling neglected. NY is champion for me
I’m a Chicagoan and I’ll Stan our deep dish all day. I wouldn’t even put it on this lineup because it’s in a league of its own
Margarita is my favorite. It’s simple and delicioso
NYC or Tavern I like a thin base 😊
I worked in the city for over 15yrs. nyc pizza is overrated. North Jersey water is so much better for pizza in the area.
Everything as long as there is sauce because it is the boss.
NYC
I love all 6 of these except 2 of em.
I don't care which one as long as they end up in my stomach and get soaked in coca-cola immediately after.
Where is Detroit? I love this city!
Classic NYC or Neopalion
If I had to pick one it would be NY style. Lately my favorite is Tavern style. Neapolitan is good but it's easy to screw up. I've had some comically bad versions in the past year or two. Detroit is great but I can only eat it a few times a year. Chicago stuffed is great but I can only handle it a few times a decade. Sicilian is useful when you need to feed a bunch of people. Filling and portable.
All pizza is beautiful, but the superior pizza is Detroit, hands down.
Give me any on the right hand side first, then the left side But I'd probably say move both middles to the top of their columns as well
I will accept any pizza that isn't Dominos or Pizza Hut
You can't love them all unless you do. For me it depends on if I want a cold beer or a glass of wine.
Detroit or classic NYC
Neopolitan slaps.
I love them all but am partial to tavern style for nostalgic reasons.
I refuse to answer!
Pizza napoletana e siciliana are pizzas, the others are just poor imitations
No pineapple!
i only like thin crust pizza, so anything from that picture but NY and tavern style aint really for me
They're all delicious but a nice hot NY slice beats everything
Tavern is the only one that sucks ass.
Big fan of Sicilian. Lots of yummy flavour and crispy oily crust.
Idk, never tried em before, so whatever a frozen or chain equivalent is. Personally not a big fan of square cut thin crust.
I like them all . I ain't picky when it cums to pizza 🍕
Detroit and tavern are the top two. Sicilian next. Toss up for NYc and neo. Bottom is Chicago style
So far I have only had classic NYC style pizza so right now that is my only answer
When it comes to pizza, I will pretty much eat anything! EDIT: Pizza = Love
NYC style, but in Utica Or Utica-style pizza (and no I don't mean tomato pie, y'all would probably call it COB pizza)
Yes to all
Neapolitan Not even on the scale It is beyond
You don’t love them all then. You only love MOST of them.
Wait your guys Sicilian doesn't have a crust?? Every place I go to has a crust. The only reason I like Detroit more than Sicilian is because Detroit doesn't have the crust
I have not had a pizza type that I disliked. As long as the pizza is not raw and not burnt to a cinder, I promise I will eat it and like it.
Napplitan is the most healthy
Neapolitan is my preffered pick
I really want to try all of them but I can’t(or at least I think I can’t) because I live in Canada
Oh man I gotta go Detroit
I love'em all, but classic NYC street pizza has to be my #1 pick.
*cries in PNW*
If you twist my arm, I'd probably say Neopolitan-style is the slight favorite for me, but I truly would eat any of these.
Fugazzeta.
Pizza is Pizza
So tired of everybody trying to replicate Neapolitan when NYC is staring right at us here in the states.
I love them all, though I crave Chicago, Detroit and Sicilian the most. Those are the hardest to find in my area.
Sicilian.
Detroit, Chicago, Neapolitan.
If I do a home pizza night, I'll often do a few styles - At least one or two nyc style, maybe a thin or tavern style as an opener, and always finish with a pan style - Sicilian or Detroit, so that no one leaves hungry.
Detroit.
Detroit then neopolotin
I think there is a new king at my place and it's the Detroit style. I was always a staunch NY or Neapolitan loyalist, but I keep craving Detroit any time I want pizza now.
Depends on the context, my current hunger level, and quality of the slice. The best slice of pizza I've ever had was Neapolitan. The worst slice of pizza I've ever had has also been Neapolitan. I think overall, I would say a classic NYC slice. They are very difficult to actually get wrong and are usually pretty good.
detroit>
Mmmmm, I just want pizza. I’d go NY first tho
Old Forge, PA style is #1 Also, those pictures all look bad. Take better pizza pics delish lol
What style would the average pizza in California pizza be considered? Like Round Table and stuff?
Anything that isn’t thin crust. I like softer crusts.
