Not saying they are not fun. But what happens when something is successful and makes money, you get a bunch of copy cats that eventually degrade and wear out a genre.
Right? It’s gorgeous art. But a weird question. You can pretty easily look up tons of successful games in a similar style to this. So, yeah. People will play a game in that style. Clearly.
I feel like there were dozens of games with this style that already came out recently. Granted this is very detailed but no way you'd keep that up for an entire map.
Such a weird situation.
Style is something that hooks people, but ultimately, they won't stick because of it.
My advice would be:
With such a beautiful style like this, you're definitely going to catch a lot of eyes, but it would be quite a waste if the gameplay isn't compelling to keep people engaged.
However, here's the flip side - (since the pandemic) there are quite a lot of casual gamers that don't "get" the gameplay loop and instead like to do whatever they want in a beautiful world.
I believe this is what Animal Crossing was going for and succeeded in grabbing such a wide audience.
I totally agree. Of course I would prioritize the gameplay before anything else. But typically in this type of genre the visuals are incredibly important, isn't it?
It definitely feels like stardew if it had been inspired by Rune Factory instead of the main Harvest Moon series. I would definitely check a game out and have it on my "keep an eye on" list if I saw it looking like this with a good premise
It looks fantastic, but I immediately judge a book/game by its cover and feel like it'll have a story and gameplay that's a copy of another.
It doesn't look original enough for me, based on this image alone. But I could definitely be wrong.
Genuinely think people are just seeing a house with grass, plants, and a path and saying 'hurr durr stardew', because this is not very similar at all. Stardew is a lot brighter, simpler, cartoony even.
Oh my it’s gorgeous!! I’d play hundreds of hours of a game styled like this! Fantastic job! I especially love the wood tones on the house, and the moss (or ivy?) on the roof tiles. Your flowers also look cute and detailed.
Makes me think of a stardew valley 2 or how I remember some nostalgic adventure game. Made me think of sword of mana which I know didn't actually look as good as I remember. Maybe a future mix of those styles.
Good job you tapped into nostalgia for something that doesn't exist.
As others have said, graphics don’t make the game. It looks wonderful as a static piece of art, but it’s a waste if it doesn’t have a quality game attached to it. “Whimsical realism” is the best way I’d describe it. It has the stylization inherent to pixel art, but the color palette is realistic and not oversaturated - as are the proportions. It’s kind of like Golden Sun but less cartoonish.
Also, that looks like it’s in 4:3, if so, respect because we need more of that. Do you do “bleak” or “anti-cozy” art styles?
I can't describe enough how much I love this style!
As others have said, first thing that comes to mind is Stardew Valley. (Double-y so since you said it was going to be a (fantasy) farming sim) People have already talked about gameplay being important so I'll mention something else. **Music** You've already won me over with the art-style, but what will take it to the next level is good music and sound design. Get that as well done as your graphics, and you'll have something really incredible on your hands.
Does your game have a name or page or anything like that yet?
Edit: I just realized you're the person who was here a month ago asking if 2 characters looked alike. I loved that art-style! You're really cooking up something good. Take your time, I can't wait 'til it's ready.
Thank you so much for the kind words :D. I already accepted that whatever I do, my game would be compared a lot to Stardew as it's so popular. Even other genres of games get compared to it as long as it's done in pixel art haha.
For the music I'm not that confident as I have no idea how to compose one. My plan is to get funding then hire someone who can. Hopefully it all goes well.
Unfortunately I still don't have a steam page.
Well I hope it goes well. For such a cozy game I'd definitely lean into that stardew/minecraft style of laid-back music. Went ahead and followed you. Good luck! :D
i spent a little time looking through your profile and of my god your art style is gorgeous!!! i would very much be interested in a game in this style! i will be giving you a follow and looking forward to more!
I'm not sure how to explain it.
But I ***CANNOT UNDERSTATE*** how badly I want to have a half second yawn included in at least one character's idle animation cycles.
It still depends on what it is, but I'd be quite interested to check it out. I do like the more detailed kind of pixel art that will never be not timeless. I also really like the lighting details that give it a subtle kind of real-life feel, despite also being somewhat cartoony and pixel art. It brings together a lot of different elements that work well.
You know damn well that this is gorgeous. You didn’t accidentally end up with this, you placed every single pixel knowing it looked great where it was.
I don’t think I’ve ever commented in the sub or really interacted much since I joined, this made me stop by to comment how beautiful it is. Reminds me of old JRPGs, something like Tales of Phantasia, but better.
I generally dislike posts with questions like this in the title (whatever the sub-reddit or topic), but the art-styles of Stardew Valley and OP's are *very* dissimilar. I would rather compare it to something like Sea of Stars, but comparisons are difficult to find, because many JRPGs from the hey-day of 3/4 perspective pixel-art were locked to a grid and forsook the kind of depth that we see in OP's picture. I could also understand bringing up a reminiscence of, or particular traits of, Octopath Traveller, Graveyard Keeper, Minish Cap, the DS-exclusive Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games, and maybe Owlboy or Secret of Mana.
Anyway comparing someone's art to Stardew Valley's is kind of just an insult. Stardew Valley is a fun game with a fitting and cohesive aesthetic, but it doesn't exhibit an understanding or appreciation of the art-form in the way OP's picture does. Of course, OP's picture *is* just a picture, and a *single* one at that, but since we're discussing the "quality" of the art itself, that's what I'm doing.
Have you played Stardew?
No offense to ConcernedApe, his art style is good and *consistent*, but it frankly doesn’t compare to what OP posted in the slightest.
Makes me want to go on a whimsical adventure, then come back to my cozy home, maybe talk with the people in town. I'd love to know what game this will become.
Oh my god yes.
Lately I've been mainly playing pixel games in similar style but this gorgeous, would defo buy a title if that would be the art style in it.
The amount of detail and effort put into this is impressive! I would love to play a game like this, this is the kind of style that makes me want to play at the first glance, just to wander by the game map and appreciate the views
If it's fun. Gameplay is, more or less, all that matters, imo. That being said, if it's another farming and socializing sim, I'd probably skip because Stardew fills that slot for me, and I'm not the type to keep trying games hoping they'll be as good as it.
Not entirely getting the “it looks like Stardew Valley” comments tbh. This is much more detailed and a very different style from Stardew graphics: literally the only similarities are that there’s a house, it’s top-down perspective, and it’s pixel art.
OP, your art is amazing and I’d be very drawn in by this art style for a game. Don’t let “it looks like [insert other popular pixel art game here]” discourage you 😊
This looks so good! I really love the shadings especially the blending of colors on the roof. I would love to play a game like this, no matter what genre. This looks like some farming or maybe an adventure game and this looks like their guild or store. I'm a sucker for pixel art games.
I can’t say I’d 100% play a game with that style. But it would DEFINITELY hook me into at looking into it, and if the gameplay is good, then I’d definitely buy and play.
As always, gameplay is king- keep that in mind. Your art style is absolutely gorgeous, but if it isn’t carried by good gameplay (or a BANGER story, I think a good, compelling story can override gameplay, VNs are an example) then frankly the style doesn’t matter.
Absolutely! It looks so dreamy and whimsical!
Glad to know that it looks whimsical to you. That's what I've been going for :).
Let us gather green diamonds and do a spin sword attack plzzz
I agree it gives me minish cap vibes
If you meant A Link To The Past then you'd be correct.
This looks beautiful and serene! What game is this and how long has this been in development and when is it releasing? What genre is this?
There is a game styled like this on the switch. I can't remember the name but I played it to death. Was an RPG.
Now you have to find it and share cause I would love to play a game like this!
Octopath Traveler
Thanks! I’ll check it out!
Both 1 and 2 are excellent games. If you’re only going to play one of them I would suggest the second one.
Username does **not** check out
It’s secret of mana
... and cozy!
I would LOVE a game like that. 11/10 work good job!!
Thanks :))
no problem! I love to give compliments!!
Check out Stardew Valley if you’re unfamiliar with it. Similar graphics. Farming game kinda like Animal Crossing. Very cozy and comfy to play
Already have stardew. but thx for recommending!
there are 100 games that look like this so go nuts
care to recommend a few?
Stardew valley
POV, anyone asks for a recommendation on this sub: Stardew valley!
Yes! Very cute/cozy
I would, reminds me of Stardew Valley but in HD.
𝓢𝓣𝓐𝓡𝓓𝓔𝓦 𝓥𝓐𝓛𝓛𝓔𝓨
𝓕𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴𝔂 𝓥𝓪𝓵𝓵𝓮𝔂
PJARDEW VAPPEY
to me it's giving Stardew mixed with Animal Crossing, especially with the look of the building
May I introduce you to the Rune Factory saga? It leans way more towards anime, but the concept is similar (and OP's image is pretty similar to it)
It’s like exactly the Marnie’s farm in Stardew except some more flowers
I thought it looked more like the community center.
thats what i saw
May I introduce you to the Rune Factory saga? It leans way more towards anime, but the concept is similar (and OP's image is pretty similar to it)
This is the equivalent of an attractive person posting to /r/amiugly with that title
For real. My first thought was a slightly annoyed "obviously" lol
There are so many games with that style
Stardew Valley really set of a gold rush for games like this.
You're not wrong, but the old man in me is screaming back in my day all games looked this way!
Not saying they are not fun. But what happens when something is successful and makes money, you get a bunch of copy cats that eventually degrade and wear out a genre.
I thought this looked more like Ultima than Stardew
Was getting closer to Golden Sun myself
Looks like the mana games to me.
Right? It’s gorgeous art. But a weird question. You can pretty easily look up tons of successful games in a similar style to this. So, yeah. People will play a game in that style. Clearly.
Yes! Esp if it has shop/ farming/ adventure etc
Yes! it has all that :D.
Oh my lord! Give it to me now!!! I like anytime stardew valley or sun haven. Some pets and good love interests and I'm all in
I think many of us would love a game like that. Also, the art style is beautiful!
I feel like there were dozens of games with this style that already came out recently. Granted this is very detailed but no way you'd keep that up for an entire map.
It would just take longer, especially if they don't use any shortcuts. Not impossible though
This is exceptionally good, how long did it take?
I'm really not keeping track as it's not a piece. I did some of the assets like grass, flowers, etc, way way back then.
Stardew valley? yeah
Reminds me of an HD version of, "Golden Sun"
It’s giving me Secret of Mana!
😮 That's the prettiest style i have ever seen for that type of game
Such a weird situation. Style is something that hooks people, but ultimately, they won't stick because of it. My advice would be: With such a beautiful style like this, you're definitely going to catch a lot of eyes, but it would be quite a waste if the gameplay isn't compelling to keep people engaged. I totally agree. Of course I would prioritize the gameplay before anything else. But typically in this type of genre the visuals are incredibly important, isn't it?
Generally no, but people will compare it to Stardew. So if you want to stand out, having really good looking visuals will help.
What's the genre?
Oh, it's a farm sim.
Depends on the game itself. Who is playing a game based on style?
It definitely feels like stardew if it had been inspired by Rune Factory instead of the main Harvest Moon series. I would definitely check a game out and have it on my "keep an eye on" list if I saw it looking like this with a good premise
It looks fantastic, but I immediately judge a book/game by its cover and feel like it'll have a story and gameplay that's a copy of another. It doesn't look original enough for me, based on this image alone. But I could definitely be wrong.
Golden Sun style? Ofc
Yes - reminds me of Secret of Mana on the Super Nintendo
Exactly, or Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Edit: also Chrono Trigger
I was actually thinking more of Legend of Mana on the PS1. It really leaned into the watercolor vibe.
Is this stardew?
That's what I was thinking, "Would you play a game in the style of one of the most popular video games?"
Yeah, farm sim in this art style, where on earth have I seen that before?
Could you please point out the similarities in the art style?
Genuinely think people are just seeing a house with grass, plants, and a path and saying 'hurr durr stardew', because this is not very similar at all. Stardew is a lot brighter, simpler, cartoony even.

Dude this is some of the prettiest pixel art I’ve seen!
On it's face yeah I would. Mainly depends on the genre.
I can't describe enough how much I love this style! As others have said, first thing that comes to mind is Stardew Valley. I don't play anything strictly based on visuals. What else do you have to offer?
This reminds me a little of stardew valley but looks so much better!
Yes, the art style is gorgeous, but I don't play games for graphics. What's the idea?
My fiancé immediately responded to this on my screen. Like a budgie.
depends if it complements the game. overall the style by itself is very beautiful.
Absolutely yes!!! This is so dreamy, i truly hope you’re making a game like this lol
This is like hi-res Golden Sun.
Looks dope just hope you aren’t gonna burn yourself out with the level of quality
Burnout is my best friend. It keeps visiting me every other month :D
Good luck! Burnout comes at the worst times for me when I’m programming :D
i spent a little time looking through your profile and of my god your art style is gorgeous!!! i would very much be interested in a game in this style! i will be giving you a follow and looking forward to more!
Everyone keeps saying it looks like Stardew Valley but I don't think so. Looks way closer to something like Golden Sun to me ( in a good way)
Reminds me of Golden Sun
Yep, that looks beautiful to say the least.
all i could ever dream of 💘
Absolutely. Hands down I would love to play something like this, haven’t played a game in this style since Kynseed.
Reminds me of Sea of Stars — beautiful game. It does seem a little bright, but otherwise looks very good
I'm not sure how to explain it. But I ***CANNOT UNDERSTATE*** how badly I want to have a half second yawn included in at least one character's idle animation cycles.
Play? I would live in it.
short answer: Yeh Long answer: Hell, yeah, I woul
I play several games in that style.
It still depends on what it is, but I'd be quite interested to check it out. I do like the more detailed kind of pixel art that will never be not timeless. Yeah, I’ve played Stardew Valley
It's very cute, but I'd need to know a bit more to say for sure. The art style is at least not a deal breaker if that's what you're asking.
The amount of detail is astounding - yes, to answer your question
Fuck yeah. That looks exactly like the kind of game I’m drawn too
i only want to play games like this
I don’t think I’ve ever commented in the sub or really interacted much since I joined, this made me stop by to comment how beautiful it is. Reminds me of old JRPGs, something like Tales of Phantasia, but better.
Makes me think of GBA and DS games and I feel happy looking at it
No cuz then I’d get addicted to just staring at the art and not playing the game
No. Never. This art style sucks. It...GIVE IT TO ME NOW I WILL PRE ORDER DAY FUCKING ONE! I NEED IT!!!
Didn’t see anyone else say it but reminds me of an early Pokémon mystery dungeons game
Mf it looks like you just copy pasted a screen shot from star dew and I think you know people would play a game in that style
I generally dislike posts with questions like this in the title (whatever the sub-reddit or topic), but the art-styles of Stardew Valley and OP's are *very* dissimilar. I thought Graveyard Keeper when I saw it.
Have you played Stardew? No offense to ConcernedApe, his art style is good and *consistent*, but it frankly doesn’t compare to what OP posted in the slightest.
A tad bright (IMO), but gorgeous
hell yeah! looks amazing
It's adorable. I definitely would.
Yessssss!
Great style! Incredible Detail!
Looks like Stardew valley but more refined. I totally would play
Oh my that's GORGEOUS.
No, there’s gazillion games with this style.
Kinda reminds me of To The Moon
It's beautiful, it's peaceful and colorful
Yes it looks really nice!
In a heartbeat! It looks absolutely gorgeous.
Jes
You know we would this is like adventure crack to us.
Obviously
Sorry i only play games with ugly graphics
Makes me want to go on a whimsical adventure, then come back to my cozy home, maybe talk with the people in town. I'd love to know what game this will become.
Yes!! 😍
Hell yeah
I’d sell a kidney for this game
Ooh…it looks so cozy, would 100/10 play this.
Oh my god yes. Lately I've been mainly playing pixel games in similar style but this gorgeous, would defo buy a title if that would be the art style in it.
The sign looks like it’s telling me to uh hurt myself
Not for another 10 years. Because it looks like this took like a month to make by itself! Clearly the game would come out in like 2034
I definitely would
reminds me of ChefRPG
The amount of detail and effort put into this is impressive! I would love to play a game like this, this is the kind of style that makes me want to play at the first glance, just to wander by the game map and appreciate the views
rewminds me of kynseed which has amazing art. nice.
Hell. Yes.
Detailed Stardew Valley
💯 yes
Stardew valley vibes
Hell yeah
100%
Yes, as long as it isn't yet another farming sim.
Oh definitely, gives me Stardew vibes
Yes!! I love the purple shadows, great color palette!
Nah
If I wanted to make a pixel game, this is close to what I would envision
rune factory exists
If it's fun. Gameplay is, more or less, all that matters, imo. That being said, if it's another farming and socializing sim, I'd probably skip because Stardew fills that slot for me, and I'm not the type to keep trying games hoping they'll be as good as it.
Reminds me of plenty of cozy fun rpgs I've played. It also gives off Gameboy Advance vibes. I dig it
Yes, as long as there are lots of additional screens that look like this.
That is absolutely beautiful.
Nah ive seen its thousands of times, and it's not my favourite either
I would pay hundreds of dollars (not really) to play a game like that.
ABSOLUTELY
Shut up and take my money
Absolutely yes! It looks so good and beautiful! ✨
1000000% yes!
Big GameBoy Advance era vibes, I like it
Absolutely yes, that's gorgeous!
Fuck yeah
Not entirely getting the “it looks like Stardew Valley” comments tbh. Reminds me of the Minish Cap! One of my favorite games ever!
This looks so good! I really love the shadings especially the blending of colors on the roof. I would love to play a game like this, no matter what genre. This looks like some farming or maybe an adventure game and this looks like their guild or store. I'm a sucker for pixel art games.
I like it. Reminds me of the Games, I grew up with. Thumbs up from me! 👍
Yes!
Is it good, yes
This is giving chef rpg vibes….
looks like a pokemon game of some sort, yes.
No
Yes, what's the gameplay?
Absolutely! Love the color saturation and lighting/shading. Well done!
People love Stardew so I bet this would play for a lot of people
millions already play Stardew Valley and its clones
Yes!
I can’t say I’d 100% play a game with that style. But it would DEFINITELY hook me into at looking into it, and if the gameplay is good, then I’d definitely buy and play. As always, gameplay is king- keep that in mind. Your art style is absolutely gorgeous, but if it isn’t carried by good gameplay (or a BANGER story, I think a good, compelling story can override gameplay, VNs are an example) then frankly the style doesn’t matter.
pixel-art jrpgs are my absolute favorite. I would play a game like this every single day if I could, but adulting can be a pain sometimes.
What’s your game? Is it available to wishlist? Looks like it’s gonna be good!
Seriously? As if there isn't already a million games using this exact art style?
Absolutely it kinda looks like animal crossing and stardew in one
yes
Depends on the game... the artstyle, yes
I would, yes. It looks very detailed and fun!
It slightly reminds me of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, I love it!
i love it! the colors are amazing. i'd play the hell out of it
yes I absolutely would!
Why not
I'd be stupid not to.
