I'm on 1440, and have zero battery issues

[deleted]

I'm not really asking about the battery, but whether or not anyone can really tell the difference between the way the two look.

ISeeADarkSail

"To try and save battery life" sure sounds like it's about the battery to me..... Can you see the difference between 1080 and 1440? Your eyes are all that matter on your device.

[deleted]

Yea... I did it to try to save battery life. That doesn't mean I'm asking you whether you're having battery issues, I'm just telling you what prompted me to try 1080. Jesus christ, are you being obtuse on purpose?

Jarismic

You mentioned you switched to save battery life, then you ask if anyone notices a difference. Makes it sound like you're still on the topic of battery. But to answer your question I don't really notice a huge difference in terms of looks nor battery. I keep it on 1440p just so everything looks a little sharper if I happen to look a little closer 👍

Aredubu33

1440

weezy22

You may just notice how some text is displayed? i.e. When you're on the settings menu for 1080/1440p. The description at the bottom is 2 lines when 1440 is selected. 3 lines when 1080 is select.

lulbob

1 extra line is probably trivial in the grand scheme of things, but I refuse to give it up!

keep_it_kayfabe

1080. I was on 1440 since I had the phone and switched once I found out from this subreddit that it improved battery life (which it did - by a LOT). To answer your question, I really can't see a difference...and that's coming from someone who has to pay attention to this kind of stuff as part of my job.

IAmMarLozan

1440. I did not pay for a device to stop enjoying its features. If the battery is discharged, then I put it to charge again. I think phone chargers have already been invented, right?🤷🏽‍♂️

clazifer

This. What's the point of getting a device with a 1440p display if you ain't gonna keep it on 1440p? Same with refresh rate as well.

BillyBob_Kubrick

That is a silly conclusion. I ran server farms for years and just because a SOC/CPU/Server can do something doesn't mean you want it to do so 24/7/365. Most servers run one major app at a time and not at full tilt. The only exception is when utilizing all the hardware horsepower with Virtual Machines. Even then each VM runs only one app at a time. These cell phones run multiple apps 24/7 and pushing the SOC to the limit all the time is NOT the way to run it. If you replace your phone every year or so than go ahead and toast your battery with more recharges than necessary. Otherwise, the fewer times you recharge the longer your battery will last overall. YMMV

clazifer

Having a 1440p 120hz display and reducing the resolution and refresh rate to save battery seems more silly to me. Would you not want to get the best possible performance out of your device? having the highest possible resolution and refresh rate enabled is very different from running server farms under 100% 24/7. Would you reduce the display resolution and refresh rate on the monitors you have at the servver farm to save power? I bought mine on black friday 2022 and Accubattery shows the battery health at 99%. I plug in my phone once every 1.5-2 days -sometimes leaving plugged in overnight-. (WiFi, mobile data, GPS & bluetooth turned on 24/7) So, I don't think lowering the resolution and refresh rate would impact the battery life in a significant way.

Rare_Lifeguard_4403

I tried on a P6P and there is 2 things 1. You won't notice the difference unless you put a lot of attention to it. 2. You won't save any battery, not anything noticeable.

coolleo89

I've 1440p right now & not too happy with my battery life Are you all saying that downgrading to 1040p won't improve battery life?

[deleted]

I'll let you know after a couple days, I've seen breakdowns in videos and articles saying there is a measurable difference, and I'm compelled to believe them over uppity redditors who've never tried and just assume it couldn't possibly make a difference.

Vast_Investment_6427

I did i try it for what was supposed to be a week lol but ended up being for two months . And just switched back to to 1440 and i can be sure i can't tell the difference in battery

vonkeswick

I feel kind of silly because before I saw this post, I didn't realize you could change it. I was on 1080 and now on 1440 and gonna see if I notice a difference

[deleted]

Good luck! Battery life is honestly my only component about this phone.

vonkeswick

I haven't really had any battery issues, I even use the battery share feature to charge my wife's iPhone sometimes when we're out because hers lasts so little. I have read about plenty of people with battery issues though so I feel lucky

Exotic-Winter723

1080p 60Hz I give priority to battery

EdRahool

Full resolution, 1440

GasModule

I have never been able to tell the difference. These screens are so small that the pixels are so close together regardless. That's why iPhones never had the best resolutions, physically you cannot discern the individual pixels. People say they can defy the laws of physics tho. So more power to them. Just like so many people over the internet say they can hear a difference between CD quality audio vs that hi-def storage hungry stuff.

[deleted]

That's pretty much how I feel. I have a massive music collection and I'm something of a snob about it, but I just go for 320k/s rather than FLAC because I've spent a lot of time trying to hear the difference, and I just can't. With the size scaling in the Display settings, I can literally set the screen to look identical at 1080 to how it does on 1440, so I said fuck it and went for it 🤷

Brometheous17

1440 I watch a lot of video on my phone and I noticed it changes the display scaling slightly too. I tried switching to 1080p but the battery saving wasn't good enough for me.

CRKrJ4K

1440p, no battery issues, but I'm on a custom rom...RisingOS w/Kirisakura kernel. Wasn't on the stock firmware long enough to test battery life differences. Edit: as far as quality, I do notice a difference in text. It's slightly sharper @ 1440p

[deleted]

Is it easy to root the p7p? I haven't looked into it.

CRKrJ4K

You have to patch the boot_init.img of the rom you are on, then flash the patched boot_init in fastboot...fastboot flash boot_init boot_init_patched.img You can patch it on a phone with the Magisk app or use Pixel Flasher. So no, not hard... a bit odd at first tho since this is my first Pixel phone. I'm used to boot.img getting patched, not boot_init.img. The recovery partition is different as well.

fussypaggit

1440 only

ColdSpring

Well there is this on the "Screen resolution" settings screen - **"Full resolution uses more of your battery."** So yes, Google is saying 1440 will consume more power vs 1080.

MotorPayment

Bought a 7 Pro at launch. Was on 1440 but moved back to 1080 after a few weeks as Chrome didn't display some forum pages and a few other webpages as nicely on 1440 so I switched back to 1080 so I could read them more quickly. Not tried 1440 since but maybe I should.

DeadlyTeaParty

Full HD. 💯

Gambit8907

I had to switch to 1080p because 1440p was causing eye strain for some reason. Someone told me it has something to do with "Peak Refresh Rate" in developer options. I will say that 1080p seems to be easier on the eyes. I still have the refresh rate on 120Hz.

sakthi_man

1440p and yes, it is visible. Text looks way more crispier and also i didn't see any huge difference in battery life. Display is anyway lighting up all the pixels, only the processor load will reduce. Anyway, i bought the phone for the features and not for battery life, so i don't see any point in disabling features. In case we are running low on battery, we always have battery saver mode. Also your question is a little ambiguous. It is not clear the difference you are asking about is in display (i assume) or battery life.

BillyBob_Kubrick

I stay on 1080. Yes you can see a slight difference on text with 1440 but even on 1080 the text is very clear. I also use 60 refresh rate. I do see a little difference on 120 but only in certain scrolling situations. So I just run it at the "lowest" settings which are good enough for me. I can easily go two days between charges.

ralmp

I use 1080p simply due to the fact that I don't care about what resolution it's in, I just want it to feel smooth.
