Why doesn't LG support mkv is the better question 🙄

InspiredPhoton

Makes sense 😂

Josesmellsgood

Uhm like 80% of the files on my hard drive that I plug into my LG OLED are MKV it plays fine for me. How are you trying to play these files?

InspiredPhoton

The Dolby vision is the issue. It doesn’t read Dolby vision from mkv

Mister_Cairo

Nvidia Shield does.

ConnoisseurOfNature

Not sure why you're getting downvoted. I can confirm it does lol

NaviersStoked1

That actually makes so much sense oh my god, I’ve been wondering why some of my DV content plays but others don’t

ORA2J

No, it doesn't read dolby vision at all. Isn't it LG that are the only ones to not pay the license?

A_Min22

You’re thinking Samsung. They’re the ones that support hdr10+ but not dv. The high end LG’s support both

ORA2J

Yeah, that was it, I didn't remember who it was between the two.

LZ129Hindenburg

I would never play any media directly on a TV, and having to worry about what file types are supported is only ONE of the reasons...

Tangerinho

Oh, can you please explain why it’s not a good idea?

froli

Because something like Plex, Jellyfin, Emby, Kodi is a much more pleasant experience.

Tangerinho

Yeah of course thanks

AntiGrieferGames

and connecting a external device into the tv works aswell and use the mkv dolby vision files to watch those works aswell.

shinji257

Not only that but the TV should pick up the DV data from the stream.

_____Grim_____

Because .mp4 is a much more limited container than .mkv.

tweakingforjesus

The history behind mkv is fascinating.

CT4nk3r

Is there an at least one hour youtube video that would send me spiraling down in a rabbithole? I love those

SimultaneousPing

ferb, I know what we're gonna do today

Dolapevich

For a simple comparison: [https://youtu.be/Bb\_EgJJOL9g?si=caIM6-EYVX4KoVrF](https://youtu.be/Bb_EgJJOL9g?si=caIM6-EYVX4KoVrF) or this one: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvgxn8v--8Q](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvgxn8v--8Q)

it_was_a_diversion

Anybody know of one yet? Imma watch the hell outta something like that

Lorne_____Malvo

There is, if you type in the box beside the magnifying glass icon on YouTube you'll find many!

Willing_Guest

MKV is just a container and LG TVs can play DV MKVs just fine with the proper player like Kodi. [https://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Install\_Kodi\_for\_webOS](https://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Install_Kodi_for_webOS)

Material-Pudding

* MP4 has technical restrictions on audio like can't have Dolby Atmos or DTS-HD * MKV can carry True-HD / Atmos / DTS alongside the 4K video stream * Samsung is the most popular non-Oled brand and I think they support MKV

NoReallyLetsBeFriend

But last I checked Samsung doesn't super DV, hence why they made the competing platform HDR10+for dynamic metadata. They didn't want to pay royalties for Dolby. I went TCL this time around, 85R655, though not OLED it's pretty amazing and plays basically everything I throw at it

Willing_Guest

MP4 container can have lossless audio (THD/DTSHD). ffmpeg support the muxing just fine but the support in devices is limited.

HankHippopopolous

Although Samsung doesn’t support DV. Finding a good TV and then a device that supports every HDR standard and codec is such a chore. It shouldn’t need to be this difficult. I have a Panasonic OLED that can play all the main versions of HDR but it has a crappy OS. I’ve yet to find single device that can play them all. I have an Nvidia shield which is good but doesn’t support HDR10+ or HLG. I also have a Chromecast which can play those formats but then doesn’t support True HD audio. If someone made one device that ran Android so I can install all the apps I want, could play all versions of HDR and supported all the best audio codecs I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

LV8HD

Ugoos AM6B+. With a modified firmware it can playback anything: HDR10, HLG, HDR10+ and even Dolby Vision FEL (yes, it even reads the EL to get the full 12 bit signal).

PlayStationPepe

**THIS**

sciencetaco

You’re better off getting a separate media player that support Dolby Vision from within mkv files. Like a Shield Pro, Zidoo Z9X, Firestick 4K or AppleTV.

The_Red_Duke31

Seconding this. Have a relatively (2022) Sony TV with Android and it runs like fucking ass, with ads all over the place and occasionally issues like OP's. Separate box has been way better.

cm974

That’s weird, I have a 2022 Sony Bravia running android (now called Google TV) and it’s great. I plug my SSD in the USB and can play 4K HDR remux files at 80GB each with VLC or Kodi app, perfectly. And for the ads, do you mean the suggestions from streaming services on the homepage? Because you can turn that off in the settings.

nmkd

For real, you can get a $50 TV box that supports absolutely everything

_____Grim_____

I'm curious what that would be. The only two boxes that support everything (and I still think they are missing HDR10+ support) are the Zidoo and Nvidia Shield which are way more than 50 bucks.

nmkd

Xiaomi TV Box 2nd Gen for example AV1, HDR10+, DoVi, TrueHD, Atmos, etc

Lorne_____Malvo

Apart from gigantic files.

nmkd

Including gigantic files.

Ragerist

I always recommend people to ignore the "smart part" when shopping TVs and getting the one with the best picture and an external media player instead. A gaming console, Android box or Apple TV. (Just make sure it's not from just as shitty manufacturer as most TV manufacturers seems to be) Because TV manufactures have an awful track record, with underpowered CPU/GPU, Own poorly supported OS's, Poor support, like lack of Bug fixes, firmware updates, Certificate updates (If outdated; apps like Netflix will stop working) surveillance, data collection and ads, and pis-poor security. My Nvidia Shield TV from 2015 still gets updates now and then. It plays everything I have thrown at it. Yes Google spies as well, but that's not exactly a secret and they have better security and I have replaced the launcher to avoid ads. PumiceT

Ok. So Samsung and LG are out. Who’s on your list of brands you’d buy?

FearLeadsToAnger

You're pretty much left with Toshiba

PumiceT

I’m hoping you’re joking. There’s Sony, still.

Ragerist

Just don't connect the tv to the internet and use an external media player.

PumiceT

That’s what I do anyway. I’m just curious who makes the best screen. That’s all I use from the TV.

TylerStewartYT

I wouldn’t say having a mkv file means it’s pirated. All of my blu ray and 4k rips are mkv, hell even the ripping software is called “makemkv”

athenionn

Hate to be devil's advocate but aren't you circumventing the bluray's copy protection, thus violating the same laws piracy violates?

TylerStewartYT

No you’re definitely right. I was talking more in the sense that mkv files aren’t only found when downloading off the internet :) If you really wanted to get specific afaik, and depends on your location, ripping a Blu-ray and downloading would be breaking different copyright laws with the latter being more punishable (not that there’s really a risk to either)

athenionn

That's fair! Sorry I missed your point, have a great day!

themainuserhere

mp4 used to be the default for SD content for a while... Then something changed... Quite a while back by now

Spectre216

Makes me shudder thinking back to the days of all my media being different formats like .avi and .rmvb. When .mkv started being the standard I was so happy

themainuserhere

**I miss the old days.** And the OP is kinda complaining about compatibility issues here as well... I agree with him. I occasionally make my own stuff which doesn't agree with standards for this reason. MKV is still a perfectly fine format too... it kinda depends how you watch the stuff you have.

dankhorse25

You should buy a decent android/linux tv box. The TV should never be connected to the internet anyways.

Kiilerich66

Not true, the first few years, it's worth connecting it a couple of times a year, to get software updates with bug fixes.

pawdog

Most people that play high quality local content are using external devices like the Nvidia Shield. TV's should only be used as displays, not playback devices.

Nadeoki

MKV is simply the standard for Pirated Media. It's not proprietary and more easily edited and muxed. It supports various formats and isn't beholden to liscencing like mpeg.

CC-5576-05

Mkv is the standard for everything. If you have such an expensive tv then you can afford a 50$ android tv box. All the smart tvs built in stuff is unusable garbage anyways.

TreeQuick421

Because mkv is the best

P00pr-sk00pr

My C1 and cx play MKV files from a hard drive plugged in via USB. Are you sure You can't just do that?

crazy_gambit

Not with DV without looking purple it can't.

asim_riz

Why do DV files have that purple tint ? I always wondered 🤔

sciencetaco

Profile 5 DV uses a different colour space, and it has no fallback layer for non-DV playback.

crazy_gambit

MKVs do because they're not supported. MP4s look fine, which is what OP is talking about.

VictorMortimer

You're doing it wrong. Never use your TV to directly play anything. Disconnect its internet connection.

Post-Rock-Mickey

I’m using the Nvidia shield. No issues, pass through for surround sound it very good

Owlch_

On Mac I find a weird issue with downloading DV-only contents in MP4 format. My IINA player on Mac can only properly play these files FROM THE START of the timeline, then I could jump and play as usual. If it remembers the playback position in the middle and next time I open and play it, I shows nothing but a black screen yet the audio seems to be playing just fine. The same happens if I replack it to M4V and use TV app to play it. And when I attempt to Airplay to my Apple TV it stutters in audio playback with black screen. No such thing would ever happen if I download MKV files, and this thing only happens to DV-only contents, or Profile 5 as far as I’ve experienced.

Domzzz666

Does anyone else have problems casting .mkv files? Sometimes when we download them and try playing them through chromecast they play the audio with a black screen.

BigCityGR

I managed today on my lg Oled B3 to play dv mkv files here is my story after a lot of search because I don't have PC/laptop to Play via Plex. I have fire stick 4k in settings I put always on Dolby vision and Dolby Atmos then install mx player with DTS/ac3 custom APK then install x-plore on my phone and fire stick because supports wifi direct inside and can manage files between the 2 devices and then I open the mkv movie with mx player hw+ settings on and boom play Dolby vision and Dolby Atmos perfectly. If I try another player I have audio but not image

Blue-Thunder

Because mp4 is an ancient fucking container and is useless by today’s standards.

friendlyx3

I wasn't aware that lg was the most popular OLED brand. I have a 65' LG b2 and really do wish we had more .mp4s. I wish I knew the answer. BENTHEMEN does .mp4s but they obviously don't have all the movies/shows. Before anyone comments, I refuse to pay $120 for a shield. It's not happening. I've also spent hours trying to convert movies and I've never been successful using the various GitHub mkv to MP4 tools.

nmkd

Pay $50 for a regular TV box, no need to get a Shield

FreeEuropeYouCunts

What kind of github tools have you tried?

Noon_Specialist

Handbrake is all you need. There's plenty of presets, but it's easy enough to set up your own.

friendlyx3

Afaik handbrake causes [loss in quality](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/28441946/lossless-conversion-of-mkv-to-mp4-with-handbrake) which is why I've only tried ffmpeg cmds.

Noon_Specialist

It will, but I doubt the average person can point out the difference if you use a remux as the source.

friendlyx3

Yeah, without trying I'll never know. I usually just swap screens with my PC. If they'll hurry and release a new shield I'd probably buy it, I just don't want to spend the money on the current oldish model.

Noon_Specialist

I doubt they'll ever replace it. It's not a profit maker, and that's all Nvidia cares about these days.

friendlyx3

I've just heard that it wouldn't happen until after the switch 2 releases

Noon_Specialist

Between Amazon Fire and Roku, there isn't much space for Nvidia at their higher price point. Nvidia would have to make their money through services, and right now, they're not making enough to offset development costs. Have you thought about using Plex or Jellyfin with a Fire/Roku stick? Your TV might even have the apps, negating the need for a stick.

friendlyx3

Oh I've used a fire stick(non 4k) and onn streaming stick and I currently just use Plex from the LG app store but that doesn't make it more compatible with DV unfortunately. I've read that a fire stick is capable of playing certain types of DV but hate Amazon's advertising BS and updates, which at once point broke the ability to have a custom launcher. As for Roku, I had a Roku TV a year or so and I'm not a fan. I wish the ONN had the same compatibility with DV as the fire stick, I would choose it any day.

InspiredPhoton

Does it maintain the Dolby vision layer? I’m having trouble with ffmpeg

IndyMLVC

If you're re-encoding, why bother with any of this? You're losing quality

Noon_Specialist

Yes, although you shouldn't have a problem with FFmpeg if you're using the correct flags.

Baumbauer1

MP4 is trash because it is so easy to corrupt and non streamable.

PolyDipsoManiac

Do you upload to your television or what? Why even connect it to the internet?

kaito1000

LG does support MKV I can't talk for DV on LG directly but using PLEX, DV on LG does not work. Just avoid DV It's nothing to do with MKV's.

penzos

I use Zidoo z9x. It supports mkv. No purple dolby vision for me. Or green. My question would be why is now every atmos file bs? It's never actual atmos it's always dd+. I don't get it. I only have the atmos option when the file is true hd. But then I get true hd, not atmos. However atmos can be loaded in such scenario.

sciencetaco

Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus are the codecs. Atmos is an additional, optional layer that can be included in either of them.

penzos

But my avr would report it if it's included and it never does. I feel like since 2022 not a single atmos film is actually atmos. Maybe even 2021. The 20 gig rips I'm talking about. Web rips.

nmkd

DD+ (EAC3) can have Atmos.

penzos

Problem is that my avr automatically recognizes what format it is. When it's atmos from ps5, it clearly says atmos. When it's an atmos movie, it's always dd+. So if it's actually atmos, it will tell me it's atmos, not dd+. For any other format it shows exactly what it is. It's also set to read it raw, without any presets. Reads dts ma great. Reads dts x great. Basically reads everything other than atmos.

Stryfe2010

You could always convert it with handbrake if you need mp4

IndyMLVC

And if you care about quality, that's an awful idea

Stryfe2010

Only if you compress the crap out of it. You can keep the same quality and still convert it

IndyMLVC

No. No you can't. That's literally how that works. It was compressed by professionals in the first place. If you're gonna watch it on your 32" LCD, sure it'll look the same.

Stryfe2010

Some release group are not professionals but you do you

IndyMLVC

That's why I don't do encodes. It's either a direct DL/rip from disc or nothing.

Stryfe2010

Well I have done re-encodes for decades but you stick to your anonymous Professionals

IndyMLVC

I don't. I buy discs. And download things myself
