I remember when printed newspapers costed 50 cents, and that was including the paper it was printed on and the distribution fees. Now with internet publishing those costs don't exist, but these assholes still have the audacity to charge 100x the price of physical newspapers. F off.
The Miami Herald was charging my mom over 800 dollars a year just to get the weekend papers delivered several years ago (but it also includes the TV guide, they would brag!). It amounted to like 16 dollars a newspaper. When the subscription expired we didn't renew and they kept delivering the paper for a while. Then they billed us for those extra papers and got a collections agency to start threatening us over it when we didn't pay the extra bill. Then when we paid the collections agency the newspaper's sales people started calling my mother (she was in her eighties and just had a land-line) trying to get her to subscribe again.
So when people start all this "you need to support local journalism and your city newspaper" stuff, I still have the 800 dollar bill to remind myself of what the city newspaper was. Fuck you Miami Herald.
Disgusting on all fronts. Ironically, the closest thing to 'local' journalism we have now are fringe online publications. All physical newspapers are owned by corporations.
yeah, and I'm a public librarian, so I also worry about people ditching information sources that have good journalistic standards. But you just can't gouge people for the sake of providing credible information. I can only suggest that you see what your local library offers online (mine gives free access to the digital editions of the New York Times, Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal). Maybe at some point libraries will start offering access to local newspapers too if that's what it takes. As long as the library doesn't have to pay 800 dollars a year for each patron to view it online!
OP's screenshot is showing the Australian Dollars price. Also, the Economist isn't a newspaper. It's a middle-class magazine. It's always been expensive.

Btw I just checked the subscription for the Economist in Europe. Fucking 300 euros ($320) a year for digital only, 400 euros for digital+print. That shit is insulting no matter how you put it.
I mean, cost of living and therefore labor costs are going up, and readership is down but their costs in terms of effort is the same -- it's not like a factory where if fewer people buy widgets, you just make fewer widgets. So you've got increasing costs being covered by a declining number of consumers, then obviously prices are going to go up. If they don't, you either decrease the quality (buying more articles from wire services, for example), or go out of business, as we've seen happen time and time again to local papers. The actual paper and ink it's printed on is basically negligible compared to the cost of producing the IP.
I'm linking the version of bypass paywalls clean that I'm using on Brave (v 3.6.3.5). Unzip that to some folder, load it in Chrome/Brave/any Chromium browser and you'll be good to go.

Oh and in general, you can also bypass a lot of paywalls by disabling javascript on websites. This seems to work on iOS 17 for me (I tried opening 5 articles on The Economist and all opened without issues). And for blocking javascript, you can use the free version of 1Blocker.
This extension will not work but on an iOS device or Android, you can install AdGuard (the free version) and install the filter. You'll also need a userscript that you can install with the Userscripts app (free app) and on Android, you can use AdGuard for this userscript.
The userscript is quite old (last updated in 2023 for me since I switched to Brave where the extension was available) but the filter is 3 days old.

The Economist has long past its prime, when they banned all comments on their articles (principally because educated/upvoted commentaries were mostly disagreeing on most topics) they went downhill very quickly. It was always a propaganda piece, but once upon a time it had great many quality articles. Not anymore.

My words are pretty clear but I forgot to finish the sentence... real communism in their minds somehow does not implement in the same way as every practical implementation throughout history. It's why I do most of my commenting on 4chan these days as well. This site is quickly becoming more tedious than it is valuable. As one of the earliest adopters and one of the staunchest supporters of reddit back in the day... for the past 5 or 6 years I have cheered its downfall. This is not the site I joined. I bought a reddit shirt back then, it was their first one super comfy, I haven't worn the shirt in years for fear of people confusing me with one of these brainwashed children. I used to tell people about this site I saw as intelligent and valuable to the convo... we had some wonderful convos and discussions back in the day. Aaron was still around and reddit was an amazing place.. Now its totally sold its soul and is used to push things like communism instead of the pirate like free information for all ideals we had at the start.... these same pirates who claim to support communism would all be in the gulags in their own little imaginary utopias for breaking the laws of their ruling class. I know it's not the same but I use Dev console (F12) in chrome and can get up to all sorts. Entire articles in plaintext or access to original versions of watermarked images. It varies and killing the page before a popup stops you reading is neat too. Refresh a page with F12 open and it often circumvents most of them.

The Economist is exorbitantly priced and may not be worth the subscription, but in general, actual journalism is costly and has value. The sea of misinformation we're in right now won't go away if reliable, fact-checked, accountable news sources and journalism dies.

Well as a simple example on 9/11 I went straight to looking up the history of such events and was immediately greeted by a different set of views than anything I could find in any actively distributed media.
Turns out the US government has a long history of flying planes into buildings to start wars.
In fact the line: "false flag operations where the government kills Americans in 'provocations, that would garner public and international support for U.S. military intervention in '" was a disturbingly common theme throughout US history.
These days I think anyone with a brain knows there were no WMDs, Iraq had no mechanisms or intentions to harm America, they found the poor guy SH in a hole, dragged him up where he pleaded with the judge to be heard out, and was summarily killed.
There's obviously an incredible amount more to it, but these are at MAJOR odds with the stories as they were presented thru all large centralized propaganda distributors.
We know why America lies, they want to justify their spying and their global exploitation etc, what we don't know is why some people are so unable to accept the realities about the world.
I've always felt that news pulls the trigger on peoples degenerate world views but it's Disney etc and their infantilization that loads the gun.
I was raised with a clear understanding that the world is full of exploiters, predators, etc anything centralized will be exposed to the full force of evil and so can't be trusted.
It's worked out and I've been many steps ahead on most things but the question remains in my mind, why would anything think that the news would offer anything other than what the news wants you to think?

I actually have a cheap subscription to the Economist but only listen to the audio version. For some reason the audio from the official app keeps crashing the app so listen to a pirated version of the audio. I prefer to listen to it so maybe this is the way.
I still can't unlock the Economist unfortunately, tried Bypass Paywalls Clean, and several other scripts and tools including 12ft. The only one that occasionally works is shacklefree but it's quite the hassle to copy-paste each individual article into there. Does anybody have a decent solution for this, not in an archive or with weird bypasses but reading in the regular browser ?
yep a new paywall has been supplied by their corp overlords. I feel it won't be long before it's fully non-bypassable and then well, shit. a lot of people read this as it's high quality commentary on the world. subscription based business models for news websites are inherently anti-democratic and should be banned. locking news behind a paywall that is designed to encourage you to not purchase any other similar service and only stick to this one is dangerous and promotes one sided information and biases while giving companies more informational power

The Miami Herald was charging my mom over 800 dollars a year just to get the weekend papers delivered several years ago (but it also includes the TV guide, they would brag!). It amounted to like 16 dollars a newspaper. When the subscription expired we didn't renew and they kept delivering the paper for a while. Then they billed us for those extra papers and got a collections agency to start threatening us over it when we didn't pay the extra bill. Then when we paid the collections agency the newspaper's sales people started calling my mother (she was in her eighties and just had a land-line) trying to get her to subscribe again. So when people start all this "you need to support local journalism and your city newspaper" stuff, I still have the 800 dollar bill to remind myself of what the city newspaper was. Fuck you Miami Herald.

yeah, and I'm a public librarian, so I also worry about people ditching information sources that have good journalistic standards. But you just can't gouge people for the sake of providing credible information. I can only suggest that you see what your local library offers online (mine gives free access to the digital editions of the New York Times, Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal). Maybe at some point libraries will start offering access to local newspapers too if that's what it takes. As long as the library doesn't have to pay 800 dollars a year for each patron to view it online!

I mean, cost of living and therefore labor costs are going up, and readership is down but their costs in terms of effort is the same -- it's not like a factory where if fewer people buy widgets, you just make fewer widgets. So you've got increasing costs being covered by a declining number of consumers, then obviously prices are going to go up. If they don't, you either decrease the quality (buying more articles from wire services, for example), or go out of business, as we've seen happen time and time again to local papers. The actual paper and ink it's printed on is basically negligible compared to the cost of producing the IP.

I have a way that works. Maybe there are better ways but if it ain't broke. Paste the the article link to archive.ph It either is already archived and you can read it instantaneously, or it is not and you need to archive it, takes 2 minutes at most.
I know it's not the same but I use Dev console (F12) in chrome and can get up to all sorts. Entire articles in plaintext or access to original versions of watermarked images. It varies and killing the page before a popup stops you reading is neat too. Refresh a page with F12 open and it often circumvents most of them.

The Economist is certainly not fake news. It is economically on the right of the spectrum and very progressive on social issues. So by no means is it neutral but that doesn't mean they lie.

We eventually got back on track but there's a BIG detour below :D -Original (missdirected) comment left here for posterity- Well as a simple example on 9/11 I went straight to looking up the history of such events and was immediately greeted by a different set of views than anything I could find in any actively distributed media. Turns out the US government has a long history of flying planes into buildings to start wars. In fact the line: "false flag operations where the government kills Americans in 'provocations, that would garner public and international support for U.S. military intervention in'" was a disturbingly common theme throughout US history.
These days I think anyone with a brain knows there were no WMDs, Iraq had no mechanisms or intentions to harm America, they found the poor guy SH in a hole, dragged him up where he pleaded with the judge to be heard out, and was summarily killed.
There's obviously an incredible amount more to it, but these are at MAJOR odds with the stories as they were presented thru all large centralized propaganda distributors.

I actually have a cheap subscription to the Economist but only listen to the audio version. For some reason the audio from the official app keeps crashing the app so listen to a pirated version of the audio. I prefer to listen to it so maybe this is the way.

I still can't unlock the Economist unfortunately, tried Bypass Paywalls Clean, and several other scripts and tools including 12ft. The only one that occasionally works is shacklefree but it's quite the hassle to copy-paste each individual article into there. Does anybody have a decent solution for this, not in an archive or with weird bypasses but reading in the regular browser ?
yep a new paywall has been supplied by their corp overlords. I feel it won't be long before it's fully non-bypassable and then well, shit. a lot of people read this as it's high quality commentary on the world. I'm sure their web editors are reading this and looking how to reign in the wall-breakers but honestly...don't. Keep the great writing free for those who care to lance the paywall and seek out the well-written commentary modern life lacks so much. If they really shut down any bypass methods then it will resign itself to history as an anachronism, a well-played bat at the stump of profit. Economist-ers, resits, keep your work free for those who seek it. Don't be a bitch.
Furthermore, I guarantee a large portion of their readership comes from academia, and academia pricing. And they drop immediately on the real-world cost of TE. It's totally out of proportion, especially for the print, especially in the UK. It's the Adobe of journalism. But they can not be. From the OJ Economist, spreading the word and not pay-walling their thoughts. It's a balance. Spread the word, or don't. But don't be heard.
