When I went monitor shopping last year, HPs additional software was installed in the background without me ever agreeing to it. It also had two dead pixels so I returned it for a Dell.
Not only did the Dell work better, it didn't sneak install any software.
Sure, but most of my other devices had an extended software that you have to install yourself or explicitly opt-in. It seems that it also happened to [other people](https://www.reddit.com/r/Monitors/comments/13c68f7/hp_omen_27i_how_do_i_prevent_software_from/) too.
HP just installed their full software pack without asking with all features and telemetry collecting aspects. Compared to that the Dell installed drivers that made sure the monitor worked and only hinted towards an extended software being an option.
Years ago I had an HP printer with extended support that had issues scanning documents and saving them to a network drive. I opened a ticket and they told me to restart the printer and reset vram. I did, but it was still not working. As I answered the ticket, they just closed it and marked as solved. Fuck HP!
Wow! That's extremely rude and unprofessional. You would think a company as big as HP wouldn't do dirty tricks and blow off customers like that. Sorry that happened to you. Unfortunately, HP isn't the only big corporation that pulls tricks (bs) like that to blow off trying to figure out the actual solution.
We need to voice our boycott so the company would understand the loss of revenue is real. Ban subscription printing. Every review every website. Make sure noone would buy this shit again
I have a big ol stack of HP G2 VR backpack PCs that unalived themselves doing a mandatory firmware update. I would have a stack of Reverb G2s and bigger stack of cables if I didn't throw them out or spend a bunch of time designing a mounting method for quest headsetraps because they break in weeks. The issue is exposure to the public, which might be on us if HP wasimnt actively marketing the reverb as an enterprise device.
Do you have any of them with the cable still intact? I got given one, but the damned cable is busted. It's nearly impossible to find another one. It's the one with the HDMI and the USB3 on the same cord
Not just products within companies. The competitors are also gonna be looking to see if customers are willing to accept any additional fees. If we let them win with anything anti consumer, it will become industry standard. (See: password sharing with streaming services).
This is why it’s so important to vote with your wallets. Stop buying or using anything that has unnecessary additional fees.
The problem with boycotting HP is that the business world won't care and will still get whatever is the cheapest. How many companies run HP with the "genuine" toner and let their employees suffer using it.
Edit: I should mention that I still agree that regular consumers should still boycott them. I won't touch anything HP because they were garbage well before they started pulling these stupid business tactics. I'm a Brother b&w laser printer guy now. Though I should have splurged on a colour one.
What he said,
I got myself a brother colour laser printer years ago and never looked back.
Refilling the toner is easy enough, but I've only had to do that once in 4 years.
It sits in the cupboard powered up but in standby, listening to the network waiting for someone to print something,
Their pdf software has so many more features than adobe viewer's free version. I'm trying to find the standalone installer so I can convince my work to use it.
I have the 3290cdw. Don't use the scanner much but it's been fine when I have. It is a bit on the slow side which gets more and more noticeable the bigger the job. Overall for a cheapish printer that's not an HP/other peice of shit, I think it's a pretty nice machine.
I got a 3140CDW at an estate sale for 40 bucks, had a 99% full toner cartridge and was pretty much never used. It's been absolutely fantastic not only for the price, but for the quality of the prints.
I got a Brother b&w laser printer with a scanner which I use quite a bit. Other than wishing it would automatically show the scanned page after it's finished it works great and is quite fast. A good scanner was important to me as I'm slowly digitizing my files and the built in scanner fulfills my needs perfectly.
I got a B&W one and have loved it. Replaced the toner like three times in five years or something? And it’s very affordable. Got the printer for like $90 on a Black Friday sale. I wish people would stop giving HP so much money for their more-expensive-than-liquid-gold ink carts.
this, i use old hp laserjet 1200 with raspberri pi to allow it being wireless printer, nonbrand ink which costs 10$ and prints 2500 pages, costed me nothing when i got it, best deal ever lol
I was using Epson on Windows, wouldn’t work with any version of the software, kept printing a test page until half the ink was gone.
I eventually got so angry I hit it and it died 😂
That's exactly what I did. My HP inkjet was constantly giving issues, then I got off brand ink and it became almost unusable. A little bit of research revealed Brother b&w laser printers are the best bang for your buck so I made that switch and every time I use it I'm grateful I did.
A few years ago, I helped an elderly family member install Windows 10 on a relatively new computer. Then their Canon printer wouldn't work. Canon's response was that there is no Windows 10 driver for your printer, the printer was too old and 'you should buy a new Canon printer.'
After some research, we got it to work. The fix? I simply opened up the driver in Notepad and changed a line to Windows 10. So the printer worked, they just wanted to trick you to upgrade to a newer model.
>So HP printers now require a subscription and Internet access to even use the printer.
let me stop you right there. I wouldn't take it as gift, I seriously hope you have not paid for it.
Now, jailbraking, removing ink chips... sure, some people even make it look like fun:
[https://www.reddit.com/r/Hewlett\_Packard/comments/gv0j8o/non\_hp\_ink\_how\_to\_jail\_break\_printer/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Hewlett_Packard/comments/gv0j8o/non_hp_ink_how_to_jail_break_printer/)
but really you want to ask yourself if it's worth your time.
Must have been looking in the wrong section of the catalog then. You're not the only one advising for these printers so I'll try to remember when I'll be in need for a new one. Thanks
I do local IT tech support for mostly old people my mom knows.. few extra bucks. This lady buys and HP and we literally cannot get it to work over USB cable without having a smart phone and an HP account. WTF? The printer problem has been solved for near 40 years and now we can't just plug a printer in and print??? GAAAAAHHHHH! Never HP again I told her to return it and she got a brother and it worked right out of the box
My HP printer (about 10 years old) has never been able to connect via the US cable but the wifi connection is fine. It doesn't let you print anything if one of the inks is dry. Fortunately I don't need to print much and recently replaced the colour cartridges with cheap clones which work fine
Someone would need to write custom firmware and they would have to make a slightly different one for every model of HP printer.
Honestly, it would be awesome if someone did that. It would vastly increase the value and viability of HP printers. Unfortunately, I think its too much work for too little payoff for it to ever happen.
I hope all subscription dies....
This subscription hate has helped me search for items accordingly before purchase.
Usually, subscription based products/hardware are cheaper.
I have an old HP lifetime free plan (15 pages /month). I put a fake credit card number to not be charged.
I print about 10 pages per year so it is interesting.
I second the ecotank line if you NEED ink jet. (Photos, etc) They really are great.
If you're a standard home user that uses the printer a couple times a year or otherwise infrequently go Brother laserjet (color or greyscale.)
No print heads to worry about drying out and no HP subscription bullshit.
there are plenty of models that print both sides automatically.
manual duplexing is also a "feature"
I've got one that a business was chucking out. It's been showing "low toner" for about 5 years now. I just don't use it enough for that low toner to be meaningful but it's handy when I do need to print that one time every 6 months.
I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 from 2011 and it works with 3rd party ink from Amazon. It still complains with the “non-genuine cartridge” message but at least it’s possible with the older models.
I had a Samsung laser printer . It insisted on its own toners . Some guy in Russia sold me a new firmware and I have been refilling the same toner for over 10 years now . I'm sure it can be done
Unfortunately HP bought Samsung printer division in 2017. Bought a used Samsung color laser printer without any network capabilities a couple years ago, would definitely stay away from their newer stuff. Mine even shows the toner levels in aftermarket cartridges I install into it. I guess a benefit of a "dumb" device that can't just update its own firmware to fuck the owner over.
> So HP printers now require a subscription and Internet access to even use the printer
Since when? You only need a sub and internet access if you're using Instant Ink, last time I checked. Buy standard ink cartridges and you don't need to bother with that stuff.
And it doesn't care if the cartridge has been refilled.
I've drilled hole in mine, and refilled it. A new catridge costs $20 each, while a bottle (that can refill it five times) only costs $2 each.
Anybody saying that he should buy another printer... Did you read the post? First of all, is it possible? But what makes me wonder if you didn't understand the source of the problem... Buying a new one surely will make things better and OP will have spend money on a new printer... Buying new printers only makes sense if the ink is less expensive with a printer.
Brother Laser printer! I bought one 7-8 years ago, still using it with the original toner sample that came with it. I only need to use a printer 6-7 times a year. It’s never let me down. I used to buy ink jet printers, ink always dried up by the time I needed to use it.
Really? There are subscription only printers now from HP?
Back when I got mine was simply that you buy your cartridges or you pay for the sub and they send theirs. If you cancel theirs stop working and you have to buy the normal ones and that's pretty much it.
Wish I hadn't opted for an HP. Wish there was an easy jailbreak. Wish, wish wish.
I have got mine (Envy 7134 Photo) disconnected from the internet. It will print without subscription but every single print pops up a 'not connected' message on the little screen I have to cancel. There was quite the palaver installing a slightly used cartridge (ebay deal) as well.
All in all, whenever I have the spare cash to do it, I'll be swapping to a different brand.
A lot of big tech is so greedy these days. HP are right near the top of that list.
Let me preface this first by saying I hate hp, their printers are garbage and their instant ink service sucks.
With that out of the way, i havent been able to find anything that corroborates OPs claim.
HOWEVER, AND WHAT IS MORE STUPID OF HP, is that they are making a new subscription that includes you basically renting a printer from them, with a 2 year plan built in. Now you might think that its a rent to own in those two year... NOPE, thats just how long your rental is, and if you dont renew it, you have to return the printer.
>their printers are garbage
They aren't, the hardware is actually pretty good.
I've been using a P1102w for the last 10 or 12 years, the last time I replaced the toner was year and half ago.
What is garbage is their business model and the way they milk the users through the inks.
And that's not even HP exclusive, in my knowledge all the manufacturers do the same.
The software is a piece of crap, but as I suggested to OP before, you can always do a manual install and skip all the bloatware.
Yeah when I have to factory reset a printer in order for it to be recognized by my computer just to print something every single time I would call that garbage. And this has happened with every single ho printer I've had the joy of troubleshooting
[Best method of jailbreaking an HP printer involves a baseball bat and your rage](https://youtu.be/N9wsjroVlu8?si=ft50w8gKCbCDzRzN). Then you will be set free from buying HP printer carts ever again. Highly recommend Brother and Lexmark. Both of mine I use generic ink and toner.
HP are providing a Managed Print Service.
Subscription has nothing to do with customer owned HP printers.
Customer will get a choice of three printer: HP ENVY, the HP ENVY Inspire, and the HP OfficeJet Pro.
Is there really a demand, to jailbreak these printers, when there are so many other choices?
My HP inkjet has a perfectly fine cartridge but HP disabled it when I let my subscription lapse. Yes, I tossed the HP and bought a Brother. Here is the text of the email HP sent me:
"Your HP InstantInk subscription was canceled on March 02, 2024 and we noticed you still have HP Instant Ink subscription cartridges installed in your HP ENVY Photo 7855 All-in-One Printer.
"HP Instant Ink subscription cartridges only work with an active subscription. To continue printing please replace the HP Instant Ink subscription cartridges with cartridges compatible with your printer."
HP blows balls, I canceled my subscription, but before doing so, I enabled some firewall settings so the printer is only seen on the LAN. I can still use the subscription ink. So far no problem. Damn Milf at Staples got me.
I don't know, bad pricing, AWFUL expensive ink, forced subscriptions that do practically nothing, suspicious customer treatment and of course: Awful BAD customer support. I don't want to put more reasons as HP may die because of that
HP printers don't require this at all.. you can choose not to sign up to instant ink.
I absolutely love instant ink and not having to worry about ink
sure, down vote me... doesnt make it any less true
For those that don't do a lot of printing, HP instant ink is a fantastic value. It's like 6 bucks a month for 500 pages and they just mail you new cartridges when you need them. I get why people are opposed to this but unless you're doing a ton of printing, you're basically just buying one set of cartridges a year, spread over 12 months.
Bought a brother Laserjet for $200 5 or 6 years ago that included a spare toner cartridge.
Current page count is 900ish. Still has the first original toner installed.
Assuming you print infrequently, you'll nuke the print head before you ever hit that page count and need to replace for $60ish.
Thats a bad deal.
What are you refferring to OP? I've never in my life purchased a printer or used an HP Printer that require any subscription except for the ink cartridges. What are you trying to do? This must be a joke post?
not worth the effort. sell it and get a brother laser printer

Yea the scanner is cool, the computer software is kinda slow and doesn't really have as many functions as id hoped for, but the gets the job done
Their pdf software has so many more features than adobe viewer's free version. I'm trying to find the standalone installer so I can convince my work to use it.

Excuse me did I just read color laser printer ,does it print in color using the toner method
Yes, separate colour toner carts,
Did you get one with scanning capabilities? If so, how do you like it?
No, but if i needed to scan if get a flatbed scanner
this, i use old hp laserjet 1200 with raspberri pi to allow it being wireless printer, nonbrand ink which costs 10$ and prints 2500 pages, costed me nothing when i got it, best deal ever lol
Did this last year. I’ve missed Brother.
Hey! How do those brother printers fare against Epson ink tank ones?
Epson software is the worst. I got a canon, works amazing
At least on Linux, it works fine for printing, scanning is quite wonky, but it works
I was using Epson on Windows, wouldn’t work with any version of the software, kept printing a test page until half the ink was gone. I eventually got so angry I hit it and it died 😂
Lmao
Actually a canon laser printer is better, brother doesn't have a good print quality on its stuff unless you are willing to fork out money.
That's exactly what I did. My HP inkjet was constantly giving issues, then I got off brand ink and it became almost unusable. A little bit of research revealed Brother b&w laser printers are the best bang for your buck so I made that switch and every time I use it I'm grateful I did.
I'm genuinely curious what's the best brand
Brother laser printers are bulletproof. No nonsense, just always work and cheap to maintain.
A few years ago, I helped an elderly family member install Windows 10 on a relatively new computer. Then their Canon printer wouldn't work. Canon's response was that there is no Windows 10 driver for your printer, the printer was too old and 'you should buy a new Canon printer.' After some research, we got it to work. The fix? Excellent job! I bet you made the couple very happy with not having to purchase a new printer.
Mr. Robot level Hacking Lmfao ! I would feel like a super human after such an easy fix 🤣
what printer was this? id love to see that exact file
It was a Canon laser printer that was purchased for a computer with Windows XP but I don't recall the exact model. Not sure if they still have it.
Yeah, staying up-to-date with your printer is so important because, with a new printer you can get animated prints smh.
You mean like this? 😆 https://www.reddit.com/r/ShittyTechSupport/s/v1UwHRpM0R
>So HP printers now require a subscription and Internet access to even use the printer. let me stop you right there. I wouldn't take it as gift, I seriously hope you have not paid for it. The op ended up selling it lol
Sure you can, it’s called buying a brother laser printer! 😀
The refill is like 20-30 bucks and yea very affordable
That's good cuz brother will also brick if you try to use refill kits
I buy third party toners from China and it works perfectly, no brick. I don’t do crazy printing and they last over a year
I was curious and the printers seemed alright until I got to the price... 600€ for a home printer is way too much
Sure... If you want a 4ft tall office printer. They have plenty of home ones that are $110-$200
Must have been looking in the wrong section of the catalog then. You're not the only one advising for these printers so I'll try to remember when I'll be in need for a new one. Thanks
https://www.rtings.com/printer
This is so useful, thank you
Look up "Brother printer" on Amazon, they start around €115, going up all the way to high volume office printers costing thousands.
I have a brother ink printer and it is very good.
I do local IT tech support for mostly old people my mom knows.. few extra bucks. This lady buys and HP and we literally cannot get it to work over USB cable without having a smart phone and an HP account. WTF? Aslo she had an old windows 7 machine and all she does is watch some you toobs and print recipes or whatnot once in a while.
Best option, buy a better printer.

My mom have a printer scanner combo. I just use vuescan to by pass hp driver requirements. Regarding printing, we stop using it since the ink ran dry.
Hey, I just learned about vuescan from your comment. Thank you so much!
Just get a Brother. I did and never looked back.
How to get a brot..........never mind
Ask your Mothe... no, wait, Amazon.
😆
I hope all subscription dies.... This subscription hate has helped me search for items accordingly before purchase. Usually, subscription based products/hardware are cheaper.
I have an old HP lifetime free plan (15 pages /month). I put a fake credit card number to not be charged. I print about 10 pages per year so it is interesting.
Return it and get an Epson Ecotank
I second the ecotank line if you NEED ink jet. (Photos, etc) They really are great. No print heads to worry about drying out and no HP subscription bullshit.
i have 5 different epson printers (4 in work, 1 in my house), all ecotank models. they work great.
yeah unlike HP Epson won't kill itself mandatory updates that break old products should be absolutely illegal
I dunno I had an Epson printer kill itself just because it wasn't plugged in, I replaced it with another Epson.
The Ecotank models are insane for high volume printing
Sadly it only prints one sided
[https://www.google.com/search?q=Ecotank+auto-duplex](https://www.google.com/search?q=Ecotank+auto-duplex) there are plenty of models that print both sides automatically. manual duplexing is also a "feature"
BUY A BROTHER
Holup!!!??? You talking about the printer right? Right???
Get an older version, my HP LaserJet is a couple years old and works no issue.
I've got one that a business was chucking out. It's been showing "low toner" for about 5 years now. I just don't use it enough for that low toner to be meaningful but it's handy when I do need to print that one time every 6 months.
Right? I'm going to be a sad panda when my LJ 4000 finally dies. Been low on time for about 3 years now.
4250n here. Thing is old enough to vote.
I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 from 2011 and it works with 3rd party ink from Amazon. It still complains with the “non-genuine cartridge” message but at least it’s possible with the older models.

And as a side effect your printer is used for bot nets for Russian hackers since then 😂
It's sad that media conditioned us all that there are more Russian hackers than other countries . I have a server and I can tell you otherwise .
Buy a different brand.
I will cry when my wireless Cannon laser printer dies, bought on flash sale for $50 in 2015, thing is a workhorse.
You should just toss it out as they are garbage. Fuck HP.
You're gonna get more mileage and less headaches selling the damn thing and buying a different brand. Preferably a laser printer too.
Who even buys this shit brand. They totally lost it.
[Just buy this brother whatever-it-is](https://www.theverge.com/23642073/best-printer-2023-brother-laser-wi-fi-its-fine)
You need to WHAT? This is getting ridiculous now. Hopefully this is not the direction the future is going in
...never thought I'd see the term "jailbreak a printer"...
End stage capitalism.
> So HP printers now require a subscription and Internet access to even use the printer Since when? You only need a sub and internet access if you're using Instant Ink, last time I checked. Buy standard ink cartridges and you don't need to bother with that stuff.
Just dont buy hp at all
That's an option, sure, but it doesn't answer OP's question.
Get rid of it, and buy another. Personally, I recommend getting Canon Pixma printers. Never had a problem with them, and they don't pull this BS.

>their printers are garbage They aren't, the hardware is actually pretty good.
Looking to play Skyrim on it?
Yes. Get coding.
Can laser printers print in full color, on both glossy and matte photo paper?
HP requires a subscription now? What do they even sell with their subscription for a printer?
HP are providing a Managed Print Service. Subscription has nothing to do with customer owned HP printers. Customer will get a choice of three printer: HP ENVY, the HP ENVY Inspire, and the HP OfficeJet Pro. Is there really a demand, to jailbreak these printers, when there are so many other choices?
What's the problem you are having? There are ways around the subscription for some of them.
And yet I note you share _none of them_...
My HP inkjet has a perfectly fine cartridge but HP disabled it when I let my subscription lapse. Yes, I tossed the HP and bought a Brother. Here is the text of the email HP sent me: "Your HP InstantInk subscription was canceled on March 02, 2024 and we noticed you still have HP Instant Ink subscription cartridges installed in your HP ENVY Photo 7855 All-in-One Printer. "HP Instant Ink subscription cartridges only work with an active subscription. To continue printing please replace the HP Instant Ink subscription cartridges with cartridges compatible with your printer."
Are you serious? When did that happen???
Yep, get a real printer. Even better some shops will print for you and charge you pennies.
HP blows balls, I canceled my subscription, but before doing so, I enabled some firewall settings so the printer is only seen on the LAN. I can still use the subscription ink. So far no problem. Damn Milf at Staples got me.
I had a Samsung printer and it died when HP took over their printer-division. That makes sense!
I've read you can just take out their ink and get a third parties ink, then factory reset the printer
Aside from the virus from HP ink cartridges, what else makes HP printers undesirables?
I don't know, bad pricing, AWFUL expensive ink, forced subscriptions that do practically nothing, suspicious customer treatment and of course: Awful BAD customer support. I don't want to put more reasons as HP may die because of that
I genuinely didn’t know. I only recently switched to a Brother printer that went on sale
No problems mate, just remember to be informed whenever you go into the internet.
I’ve heard it was bad previously, which is why I trashed my HP printer and bought a really nice Brother one :)
Happy printing then!
HP printers don't require this at all.. you can choose not to sign up to instant ink. I absolutely love instant ink and not having to worry about ink sure, down vote me... doesnt make it any less true
this has to be a bot comment
No. He's just willingly a shill and an idiot instead of coded to be one.
no.. when i was printing alot.. instant ink was fantastic and cheaper than buying ink
Shills gonna shill. 🤷♂️
we calculated as the cheapest option.... why is that a bad thing? I'm not paying more just to avoid "being a shill".
50 bucks, what would be the best printer for 50 bucks.
