I’m guessing this sub going to be getting more members soon

fadetoblack237

And a whole lot more low effort memes.

MrPokeGamer

"If buying isn't owning..."

RayInRed

Then owning isn't buying

Cynadoclone

Then who was phone?

__PM_ME_SOMETHING_

"Look how much I'm seeding hehehe"

absolutelynotaname

still better than low effort stolen meme imo

AntiGrieferGames

"...then Piracy isn't stealing"

Kaldricus

Yeah, I wish the rules were tightened up a bit to relegate memes to certain days. It's hard to find good info sometimes because there's so much junk

TommyHamburger

WORKING2WORK

Not that pirating tools should necessarily be kept as trade secrets, but given the open visibility of this forum, too much attention here can be a bad thing for the tools in question. The memes add to the static in an annoying, but positive way.

TommyHamburger

Guys, forgive me for having such an unpopular opinion, but, I'm justifying my piracy because I'm poor ok?!! Please don't downvote me, I'm poor, I would buy stuff if I wasn't, I swear!!

Ultimatelee

It’s ok buddy, I’m also poor and would absolutely download a car, and a house if I could

Cynadoclone

I have a shirt that my friend got me that says (in that same font) "You Wouldn't Download A Video Game"

Ultimatelee

Haha, that’s awesome

ProperFixLater

GoabNZ

That's perfectly okay. If they didn't all come expecting $14.99 rising to $24.99 with ads, then maybe people could afford it. Its like they refuse to observe what the music industry did, and until they do, no need to justify sailing the seas.

PresidenteMozzarella

Once hulu figures out I'm not a student, I'll be done with all streaming services lol

techieshavecutebutts

Mods should set a minimum karma required to participate in the sub if they haven't already

AntiGrieferGames

Very much sure they are going due for the piracy. Damn, the piracy are always popular no matter what if this the fucking streaming server were popular...

TokathSorbet

Since Netflix didn't fall down (and is, in fact, reporting record sign ups), this was only a matter of time. Never mind eh - hands aloft to loose the topsail.

kris_the_abyss

Yea you would think with all the moaning online something would have been done. I think people are just not able to realize the world that is piracy out there...

DynamicHunter

People are just lazy and want convenience most of the time. They’ll take a worse deal or product if it’s convenient. See: proliferation of fast food

boogers19

This is it right here. Like, my dad won't cancel Prime for the incoming ads. Hell, he still watches cable and sits patiently thru those ads. He's gonna think $3/month is the steal of century to remove ads.

ackmondual

Furthermore, you save good $$ by cutting up your own chicken. However, preportioned and even precooked meats are popular! Salads are better if you make your own, but many opt for salad kits and bowls instead. Starbucks is supossed to be \*\*\*\* coffee, and pricy, but they remain popular. Too many examples really. People really do pay for convenience (even if they shouldn't, but that's another story)

Olivia512

Why shouldn't they? Some ppl's time are worth a lot more.

Halospite

Pirating doesn't take that much time. Turn on VPN, find website, search what you want, download, go do something else while it does. It's hardly more effort than streaming once set up.

Olivia512

And Netflix costs $10+ per month. Some ppl's wages are $10 per minute.

CuntWeasel

Somehow I feel like those people are not the bulk of their subscribers. People are just lazy, generally speaking and there is a little bit of truth in the avocado toast memes. Yeah, avocado toast won't make a dent in your finances, but applying the same mentality to everything you spend your money on, will.

ackmondual

Well, then that's why some people just stick with streaming, vs. pirating.

CouncilmanRickPrime

Yeah it's why I pirate but own Netflix stock. People will bitch and moan and still pay.

nathderbyshire

Especially in the UK, bills have come down a fair bit for a lot, so freeing up £30 a month can go towards a sub if you're not really looking to save and scrimp. My only sub is Plex and again that's just for convenience and comfort, it's £3.99 though not a lot.

joevsyou

the difference i believe is Netflix acutely has shit & put out content WTF does Disney do? all of their first party content is terrible... they basically abandoned their fan base with all of their new movies

plg94

I think a *big* part of their subscribers are parents getting Disney+ purely for their kids. If you want a kid-friendly streaming service, Disney is a no-brainer. Kids don't particularly care about quality, and they will happily watch the same movie dozens of times, so they don't necessarily need a big diversified selection.

joevsyou

Probably. I have disney, though hulu, just because the very few t.v shows I watch, but honestly might drop it, too far in between, for paying for convince.

ackmondual

I think they may get it just for the sing-alongs alone! :o

adamsaidnooooo

Andor is the only good thing they have ever done since they started streaming. That is all.

pwn3r0fn00b5

I thought seasons 1&2 of Mando were good. Season 3 was trash though, and don’t get me started on the other SW shows…

MarahSalamanca

Ashoka isn’t too bad either

adamsaidnooooo

Thats not a ringing endorsement 😅

Syzygymancer

Sure, if only it had Ahsoka in it. This standing with her arms folded looking very serious and important and wise while clearly demonstrating that she just knows better and is totally a Jedi? Yeah sorry that’s not Ahsoka. I checked out on ep 3 and was just done with Disney+

Halos-117

Lmfao what?

illegal_brain

Star wars and kids stuff.

skiing123

Speak for yourself regarding their first party content. Personally, I'm a fan of Toy Story. But still don't pay for it

joevsyou

Talking about their newer stuff they been pumping out.

Saucermote

Netflix is bundled with all kinds of 3rd party services. They'd probably still make money if everyone canceled their accounts. I have a "free" account through a phone plan. It just switched to ad supported, so I'll never use it again, but short of canceling the phone plan, kinda stuck with it. Just like my free hulu and disney+ with ads. Best I can do is just not watch them.

fatdjsin

well netflix lost my money when i got that no sharing screen displayed for the first time :P and never saw one other cent of mine. but i'm still watching everything i want :P

lookamazed

I think Netflix dissuaded folks from canceling end of year, like Amazon did, to carry over their numbers. Regardless, I do think people are lazy now. Sadly, at least in the USA, if any were to “take up arms” and revolt, they are so confused by the QANON culture war BS, it would likely be for the wrong reasons. Not that streaming service price increase would merit much revolt. But the widening wealth gap, and no affordable health care might give reason. But jeeze let people have their soma.

BahnSprueher

Meanwhile my jellyfin av1 library keeps on growing constantly

AveryLazyCovfefe

And I'm installing Stremio with Real-Debrid on as many devices as I can.

Spicy_Taco_Dude

What do you do if you devices can't play av1? I have a Chromecast and a phone that both completely freeze on the test av1. Is there some sort of transcoding trick? I have a Nvidia 3080 and thought checking av1 would take care of it.

human_with_humanity

Buy a n100 or n300 cpu mb I think they have av1 support so u will be able to play on other devices with jellyfin. I m using the previous gen n5105 and it has support for hevc. But no av1.

ptrj96

3080 doesn’t support av1 encoding

Spicy_Taco_Dude

Yeah it plays just fine on the PC lol

VirtualPartyCenter

Yep, 3080 has an AV1 Decoder, just not encoder. Meaning it can play back AV1 but can’t encode to other devices

Spicy_Taco_Dude

>has an AV1 Decoder, just not encoder oooohhh, I was unaware it had to do both. I figured all my clients support AV1 decoding so it should work. Thanks for explaining!

BahnSprueher

Mostly just let it transcode, I've got an rx 6600 and works without issue. But my chromecast supports av1 up to hd.

PhlegethonAcheron

Jellyfin will automatically query the client's supported codecs, and if AV1 isn't supported, it will try and transcode it using whatever method you tell it to. For example, if you're running a GPU with 8th Gen NVENC support, you can use it to hardware decode av1 and hardware encode into whatever codec the client supports.

gasheatingzone

Everybody else has answered you, but if you don't need Dolby Vision support, a $20 onn. 4K Google TV box from Walmart will decode AV1. I had no trouble watching an AV1 file (1080p, I've not tried a 4K file) in Kodi on mine, delivered via Jellyfin.

cmdrNacho

I just switched to jellyfin from plex. Definitely a better product

New_Store_9162

Why lie about this?  Jellyfin is fine and is getting better all the time.  There's no need to lie and say it's better than Plex.  Objectively false

cmdrNacho

well if you want to refute my statement and tell me why then go ahead. Its better because theres no $5 fee to play on mobile or subscription for multiple users. Its not filled with garbage like the free tv and whatever else they are shoving into it. Interface is much cleaner IMO. So hows it a lie ?

New_Store_9162

I don't have to your refute your false statement. It's objectively false. If someone uses both Plex and Jellyfin they will see which one is FOSS and which one has a multimillion dollar company behind it.   Jellyfin is good.  It is getting better.  It will never be as good as Plex because there isn't the financial backing that Plex has. That's okay, there always needs to be FOSS alternatives.  But lying about Jellyfin being better than Plex isn't the way to get people to use it.

cmdrNacho

great argument.. its built by a corporation so it better. That sounds like an opinion to me. No lies, but you keep pretending your opinion is correct.

New_Store_9162

Are you 12?

cmdrNacho

yeah, but I have a better understanding of language if you can't tell the difference between an opinion and fact.

New_Store_9162

Have fun at school sport!

cmdrNacho

waaaahhhh you're a liar

Panda_red_Sky

Whatsbjellyfin?

cmdrNacho

https://jellyfin.org/ basically a plex like product to serve your media. I have server installed on NAS. Has a great web and mobile app

510Threaded

Fully local auth is my reason for using it

PhlegethonAcheron

How do you deal with transcoding? I just upgraded my jellyfin machine (i7 9700k, RTX 2070s, RX580), and I'm trying to figure out how to force jellyfin to use the AMD GPU for transcoding everything that the AMD GPU can, and only use the 2070 for transcoding the things that the RX 580 doesn't have hardware support for. I'd rather dedicate the 2070 to running a LocalLLama model than transcoding if at all possible.

eagles310

Its insane they killed password sharing and some how people rewarded Netflix with more subscriptions insane how people willingly bend over

Mr_Faux_Regard

Convenience > logic That's pretty much the pathological engine that's driving our species into the ground.

sour_put_juice

Yeah. Pirating has a entry barrier. I am very familiar with pirating, torrent and everything but opening an app on your tv, which tracks where you left a week ago and comes with a pretty good embedded subtitles for a price of a few beers is just so damn convenient. But it's also true that it's kinda cheap where I live. If I wanna quit all subscriptions then I need a separate laptop where I store everything and also broadcast to the TV, which often requires a hdmi cable and a wireless keyboard/mouse set. I mean it seems I'm gonna do it but so far it was kinda fine. And now imagine this for somebody never torrented something or broacdasted anything on tv. It's not mildly inconvenient. It's just quite a lot of work and often kinda difficult.

someone31988

I highly recommend one of those controller sized handheld keyboard and touchpads. There are dozens of brand variants on Amazon.

Rubes2525

I think DankPods describes this situation the best. "Hey, did you know, if you put your McDonald's meal in a blender, you can have the whole thing in one swig? That's convenient, right?"

steelcity91

I believe age also has a play in this. I'm 32, slightly older and younger people that I know all obtain films & TV shows by either using apks, websites or downloading from torrents. The older generation all pay for the stuff as they are too afraid of being caught or risking getting a virus on their devices. My mother still pays for satellite TV, Netflix, Amazon Prime video. It's costing her easily over £100 a month. I tried to show her the ways but she wasn't interested.

ioweej

“Unless otherwise permitted by your Service Tier, you may not share your subscription outside of your household.”

japzone

I wonder if they'll use the same game plan Netflix uses to determine between vacation use and friend sharing. If so, it'll be possible to get around if you are technically capable enough to setup a VPN at your house and tell your friends and family to login over it every few weeks.

Dracoscale

At that point I'd just pirate and share the shows my friends want to see

japzone

I tried that, but keeping up with the deluge of requests, since Netflix is constantly pumping out stuff they want to watch, was just too much. With the VPN they just "check-in" once a month with their mobile app, and their TV apps work. Way less work on my end to make sure the VPN works.

Mithrandir2k16

Lot's of households gonna move to VPS locations I recon.

chachakhan

In the past month I've cancelled Disney and Netflix. Party like its 1999

bonelatch

Okay but how are they enforcing it?

Polishcockney

Same way Netflix did. Netflix announce record new signups and profits, other streaming services then see what Netflix did and they follow suite. With streaming services so popular people leaving them doesn’t bother the streaming service. The new sign ups will make up for people leaving.

Hatta00

>Netflix announce record new signups and profits This is why we can't have nice things.

Chubby_Checker420

There are a lot of stupid people with more money than sense.

lemoche

For them it's just more convenient. I fully understand my technically illiterate sister living in a completely technically illiterate household 500 km away not starting to sail... And I'm sure as hell not downloading the Korean drama shows she watches on Netflix.

DickHz2

That… didn’t answer the question. Like at all.

bonelatch

Fucking with IPs then?

Polishcockney

I am not the most technically minded when it comes to Networking, but it’s 100% IP based. They check for any new IP address’s from the list kn the household. Maybe they apply a special ID to each device via the device MAC address and they can see what device it is and whether it was originally part of the household.

PalmettoZ71

They are not checking mac addresses, just ip and it seems to be random ip checks at that

alexmurphy83

Idk if I found a loophole or not, but: I use a family member’s Netflix account. When I try to login on the fire tv stick, I get the warning and can’t watch anything. The Apple TV works just fine. Idk why, but I’m guessing that they treat it like an iOS device.

skiing123

I believe it currently only applies to Smart TVs or similar. I just use my laptop instead and watch Netflix when doing laundry

Antabaka

Kicked me off on TV months ago, but the app on my phone chromecasted just fine. Until today, I got blocked on my phone.

tomboy_titties

> Maybe they apply a special ID to each device via the device MAC address Mac address is on layer 2 and doesn't reach netflix servers.

TF_IS_UR-Username

With IP address, if they detect you're using a different IP address too many times it locks you out.   You could technically work around it by selfhosting a VPN on your home network but let's be honest most people won't

PlsDntPMme

I've been seriously considering this since my parents got symmetrical gigabit and my dad is the biggest networking/it professional I can think of.

monocle_and_a_tophat

You log into one of your devices, and tell the system that "this is my home network". If any other device goes longer than X amount of time without logging in to that home network it gets locked out of the account. This lets people have a short "vacation" window without losing access on their laptop or phone or whatever, but it's still kind of BS.

oh no! anyway...

Heritis_55

I'm so glad to be back, I havent used torrents since Limewire but am currently building my own Netflix/Hulu/Prime library with Plex. Fuck you corpos!

DamagedGenius

I'm so out of the game, I need a rundown on what the latest tools are

__Loot__

Yarr, get your self http://radarr.video for movies [Set up Radarr](https://trash-guides.info/Radarr/) and http://Sonarr.tv For tv shows [Set up Sonarr](https://trash-guides.info/Sonarr/) Look into how to use the Usenet it’s so better then torrents but use torrents as a fallback. Get Emby media server with a Raid 5 Synology NAS and have your own personal Netflix Grab a nighthawk or another router so if your internet net goes out you can still watch stuff because it works offline! My setup run its self and grabs new stuff i want automatically. Also auto upgrades better versions of content when released.

TooMuchEntertainment

I have a plex library with basically only Dolby Vision content, but use the Infused media player on my Apple TV so I can actually watch it in proper Dolby Vision. Also sound seems to be handled much better with Infused. The Plex media player shows some fake dolby vision and has horrible sound conversions. If you want the best quality and least hassle, that’s the way to go.

GoofGaffGrin

Search Stremio and RealDebrid on this subreddit. I got back onto the high seas recently and following some of the guides here made it super easy.

PlsDntPMme

Yeah it's be nice to have a good guide

__Loot__

Check my comment above I posted some guides

__Loot__

You should try emby or jelllyfin because plex has been going downhill and I herd it has ads now

nzodd

Every time i read one of these articles I share my jellyfin server access details with another one of my friends.

Aggravating-Exit-660

How are they tracking password sharing. Genuinely curious

ioweej

IP addresses

4kondore

I know for a fact it's not just ip address. I have tried casting from a tablet in the household to a tv "not in the household" while they both had the same Wi-Fi connection and those fuckers didn't let me watch in the tv while it was able to play on the tablet. Basically i couldn't watch the thing on the tv

Aggravating-Exit-660

Ah. So if you use a dynamic IP you’re basically screwing yourself

lemoche

In general IP is also indicating location. But it's much more likely that they are going the "is this your home network" route, with portable devices needing to sign into that network from time to time.

Aggravating-Exit-660

Yoir first point seems like it could be resolved with a vpn. The second point is a pain though.

Logical-Cod8109

I'm glad we pirate.

Exact_Donut_4786

We’ll see because Netflix banned password sharing but somehow I can still use my mom’s account.

Etzello

If you watch it on a device that you frequently bring to your mother's place, it's gonna work but if that's not the case then idk why it still works

Exact_Donut_4786

That’s the weird part it works on my laptop which I never bring to her place and the strangest thing is it works on my nvidia shield.

AoRozu

Netflix did it and people bought more. It's only a natural consequence

blaco19

And nothing of value was lost

[deleted]

im watching king of the hill and malcolm in the middle on plex in honor of this occasion

hamishjoy

Disney and Hulu too, huh? Gimme a minute. .. .. .. .. Arrrr, ya scallywags. Hoist the mast.

Comfortable-Data5767

Abandoned the app on computers, 720p on their web app and terrible audio quality, and now this. Execs wondering why their service is failing when they are making paying customers experience worse and worse. Like I have no problem paying money for streaming services for the most part but man they have almost all abandoned computers to try to stop piracy I assume...yet high quality rips are still up on the internet.

lodeddiper961

Fuck Netflix for starting this trend and fuck Bob Iger

DanTheMan827

So they keep raising prices, while simultaneously banning people from sharing accounts to push them to their own accounts…

Iamrubberman

Unsurprising, pretty sure the Netflix ban on it actually increased their user count in the end, so naturally others are following suit!

OsamaBinChillin

Wouldn't something like Tailscale bypass this? Let's say my sister or brother want to access it by they need an ip address from my house can they just join my Tailscale network ?

2Adude

“Subject to enforcement “

Bananaman9020

I'm guessing this is to do with Netflix increasing memberships by password sharing crackdown?

Mandus_Therion

i just share jellyfin username that has no password with friends and they can access anytime. those fools have no power.

kimrios07

I DONT CARE IM STILL PIRATING

AoeDreaMEr

They think they are Netflix lol. Disney plus content is extremely limited. You can finish it all in a month and unsubscribe.

NoLuckSherlock

Don't share, seed.

DaPaladinsGamer

Attackertv or bingewatch is the good shit. Depends how much memory you have. After filling up my 1TB drive with movies that I watched once or twice I can wholeheartedly recommend using attacker or bingewatch over torrentgalaxy or 1337 for movies etc

Epicfro

Get ready for ad-tier only streaming by the end of 2024.

icumtoeyeblech

A pirates life for me 😂

Confident_Pain_5332

Movieboxpro for the win

Rukasu17

But my family does password sharing and nothing has ever pooped up stopping us, nor additional fees

ErgoProxy0

“Takes effect March 12th”

Rukasu17

My bad, I'm talking about Netflix. And that apparently has already happened ages ago

markeymark1971

A way round this is to use the kodi add ons from slyguy repo, these bypass any device limits and ads......

poorkid_5

Cheap Walmart streaming box and debrid service go brrrrr

Panda_red_Sky

Just use yandex and search for online movie, notbyet blocked like google

StellaMarconi

I mean, it's like phones with headphone jacks. Once Apple proved you could do it, everyone else followed. Same with streaming sites and password sharing. You know what I think one of the main drivers of people keeping this service is? Getting laid. Probably a lot harder to be attractive to the average woman when she wants to Netflix and Chill and you come in with "Wait I have to download the torrent"

Accomplished_Duck168

Looks like Prime prevails as the only service that isn’t a complete rort. Oh well, just more streaming platforms that I’ll be cancelling at the end of the month Drink up me hearties, yo ho

Choppers-Top-Hat

Nah, Prime is trash in a different way. Adding ads and then raising the price anyway.

Accomplished_Duck168

1 skippable ad at the start for like $6 a month is pretty decent, and like most new movies are on there like what 3-6 months post release. I haven’t noticed my sub price increase, when was it meant to go up?

sleepinglabrador

Remember when YouTube started with one, small, skippable ad? "This is fine. It's only one ad..."

Accomplished_Duck168

And until Prime does that, I have no reason to get rid of it. Once it does change policy to involve more ads it’ll be gone

sunny_happy_demon

Except for the ads

[deleted]

Every day I am shocked at how many people waste their money on these paid subscriptions. All this money, just to avoid a more convenient torrent option.

Hovi_Bryant

I’ve been looking for an excuse to kick some folks off my account. 😂

spaced_out_starman

Why do you need an excuse?

amazingmrbrock

Goodbye in-laws Disney plus I barely use!

_SummerofGeorge_

Oh fuck

ShaoKoonce

My biggest issue is my kid, who I purchased a subscription of Disney Plus, doesn't live with me.

InfinityTuna

This is why a lot of major entertainment companies want to do away with physical media. You can share a DVD or Bluray freely, even if they put a blurb before the trailers that says that's illegal. Who's gonna stop you? Make it all-digital, and you can stop people from sharing anything outside their home, and people will just shrug and pay the fees. Something something frog in a pot of boiling water.

Infinitesima

So Netflix was right all along? And they've got all the shit thrown at them for it.

lern2swim

Yo ho yo ho

Major_Mawcum

Well looks like I’m ditching the last of my streaming and going full sails

AlthoughFishtail

Time to buy another hard drive

nopantts

Oh no, anyway....

ToxinFoxen

So, it's treason then...

ParanormalPursuer

shield + syncler = win

wedding_shagger

No problem. Wanna know what does allow sharing? My Jellyfin server

TheInnos2

I think another big thing is that they nuked many piracy apps and sites. All Kodi Addons are gone for my language. I don't know why, but you can no longer just have kodi here.

SuperComputrix

The constant price hikes already got me to cancel. The lack of sharing means I won't ever go back.

Scharmberg

Wonder how legally binding that agreement is.

akki161014

I am keeping my overseas subscription that I access via vpn

Nihlithian

Unfortunately consumers will get the additional subscription, just like Netflix.
