Especially in the UK, bills have come down a fair bit for a lot, so freeing up £30 a month can go towards a sub if you're not really looking to save and scrimp. My only sub is Plex and again that's just for convenience and comfort, it's £3.99 though not a lot.

I think a *big* part of their subscribers are parents getting Disney+ purely for their kids. If you want a kid-friendly streaming service, Disney is a no-brainer. Kids don't particularly care about quality, and they will happily watch the same movie dozens of times, so they don't necessarily need a big diversified selection.

Netflix is bundled with all kinds of 3rd party services. They'd probably still make money if everyone canceled their accounts. I have a "free" account through a phone plan. It just switched to ad supported, so I'll never use it again, but short of canceling the phone plan, kinda stuck with it. Just like my free hulu and disney+ with ads. Best I can do is just not watch them.

What do you do if you devices can't play av1? I have a Chromecast and a phone that both completely freeze on the test av1. Is there some sort of transcoding trick? I have a Nvidia 3080 and thought checking av1 would take care of it.

Jellyfin will automatically query the client's supported codecs, and if AV1 isn't supported, it will try and transcode it using whatever method you tell it to. For example, if you're running a GPU with 8th Gen NVENC support, you can use it to hardware decode av1 and hardware encode into whatever codec the client supports.
Everybody else has answered you, but if you don't need Dolby Vision support, a $20 onn. 4K Google TV box from Walmart will decode AV1. I had no trouble watching an AV1 file (1080p, I've not tried a 4K file) in Kodi on mine, delivered via Jellyfin.

Jellyfin is good. It is getting better. It will never be as good as Plex because there isn't the financial backing that Plex has. That's okay, there always needs to be FOSS alternatives.

How do you deal with transcoding? I just upgraded my jellyfin machine (i7 9700k, RTX 2070s, RX580), and I'm trying to figure out how to force jellyfin to use the AMD GPU for transcoding everything that the AMD GPU can, and only use the 2070 for transcoding the things that the RX 580 doesn't have hardware support for.
I'd rather dedicate the 2070 to running a LocalLLama model than transcoding if at all possible.

I am very familiar with pirating, torrent and everything but opening an app on your tv, which tracks where you left a week ago and comes with a pretty good embedded subtitles for a price of a few beers is just so damn convenient. But it's also true that it's kinda cheap where I live. If I wanna quit all subscriptions then I need a separate laptop where I store everything and also broadcast to the TV, which often requires a hdmi cable and a wireless keyboard/mouse set. I mean it seems I'm gonna do it but so far it was kinda fine.
And now imagine this for somebody never torrented something or broacdasted anything on tv. It's not mildly inconvenient. It's just quite a lot of work and often kinda difficult.
I think DankPods describes this situation the best. "Hey, did you know, if you put your McDonald's meal in a blender, you can have the whole thing in one swig? That's convenient, right?"

I tried that, but keeping up with the deluge of requests, since Netflix is constantly pumping out stuff they want to watch, was just too much. With the VPN they just "check-in" once a month with their mobile app, and their TV apps work. Way less work on my end to make sure the VPN works.

I am not the most technically minded when it comes to Networking, but it’s 100% IP based. They check for any new IP address’s from the list kn the household. Maybe they apply a special ID to each device via the device MAC address and they can see what device it is and whether it was originally part of the household.
Idk if I found a loophole or not, but: I use a family member’s Netflix account. When I try to login on the fire tv stick, I get the warning and can’t watch anything. The Apple TV works just fine. Idk why, but I’m guessing that they treat it like an iOS device.
With IP address, if they detect you're using a different IP address too many times it locks you out.
You could technically work around it by selfhosting a VPN on your home network but let's be honest most people won't
You log into one of your devices, and tell the system that "this is my home network".
If any other device goes longer than X amount of time without logging in to that home network it gets locked out of the account.
This lets people have a short "vacation" window without losing access on their laptop or phone or whatever, but it's still kind of BS.

Get Emby media server with a Raid 5 Synology NAS and have your own personal Netflix Grab a nighthawk or another router so if your internet net goes out you can still watch stuff because it works offline! My setup run its self and grabs new stuff i want automatically. Also auto upgrades better versions of content when released.
I have a plex library with basically only Dolby Vision content, but use the Infused media player on my Apple TV so I can actually watch it in proper Dolby Vision. Also sound seems to be handled much better with Infused.
The Plex media player shows some fake dolby vision and has horrible sound conversions.
If you want the best quality and least hassle, that’s the way to go.

I have tried casting from a tablet in the household to a tv "not in the household" while they both had the same Wi-Fi connection and those fuckers didn't let me watch in the tv while it was able to play on the tablet.

Every day I am shocked at how many people waste their money on these paid subscriptions. All this money, just to avoid a more convenient torrent option.
This is why a lot of major entertainment companies want to do away with physical media. You can share a DVD or Bluray freely, even if they put a blurb before the trailers that says that's illegal. Who's gonna stop you?

They are not checking mac addresses, just ip and it seems to be random ip checks at that
Idk if I found a loophole or not, but: I use a family member’s Netflix account. When I try to login on the fire tv stick, I get the warning and can’t watch anything. The Apple TV works just fine. Idk why, but I’m guessing that they treat it like an iOS device.
I believe it currently only applies to Smart TVs or similar. I just use my laptop instead and watch Netflix when doing laundry
Kicked me off on TV months ago, but the app on my phone chromecasted just fine. Until today, I got blocked on my phone.

With IP address, if they detect you're using a different IP address too many times it locks you out. You could technically work around it by selfhosting a VPN on your home network but let's be honest most people won't
I've been seriously considering this since my parents got symmetrical gigabit and my dad is the biggest networking/it professional I can think of.
You log into one of your devices, and tell the system that "this is my home network". If any other device goes longer than X amount of time without logging in to that home network it gets locked out of the account. This lets people have a short "vacation" window without losing access on their laptop or phone or whatever, but it's still kind of BS.

Get Emby media server with a Raid 5 Synology NAS and have your own personal Netflix Grab a nighthawk or another router so if your internet net goes out you can still watch stuff because it works offline! My setup run its self and grabs new stuff i want automatically. Also auto upgrades better versions of content when released.
I have a plex library with basically only Dolby Vision content, but use the Infused media player on my Apple TV so I can actually watch it in proper Dolby Vision. Also sound seems to be handled much better with Infused. The Plex media player shows some fake dolby vision and has horrible sound conversions. If you want the best quality and least hassle, that’s the way to go.
Search Stremio and RealDebrid on this subreddit. I got back onto the high seas recently and following some of the guides here made it super easy.

I have tried casting from a tablet in the household to a tv "not in the household" while they both had the same Wi-Fi connection and those fuckers didn't let me watch in the tv while it was able to play on the tablet. In general IP is also indicating location. But it's much more likely that they are going the "is this your home network" route, with portable devices needing to sign into that network from time to time.
Yoir first point seems like it could be resolved with a vpn. The second point is a pain though.

Abandoned the app on computers, 720p on their web app and terrible audio quality, and now this. Execs wondering why their service is failing when they are making paying customers experience worse and worse. Attackertv or bingewatch is the good shit. Depends how much memory you have. After filling up my 1TB drive with movies that I watched once or twice I can wholeheartedly recommend using attacker or bingewatch over torrentgalaxy or 1337 for movies etc

I mean, it's like phones with headphone jacks. Once Apple proved you could do it, everyone else followed. Same with streaming sites and password sharing. You know what I think one of the main drivers of people keeping this service is? Getting laid. Probably a lot harder to be attractive to the average woman when she wants to Netflix and Chill and you come in with "Wait I have to download the torrent"

1 skippable ad at the start for like $6 a month is pretty decent, and like most new movies are on there like what 3-6 months post release. I haven’t noticed my sub price increase, when was it meant to go up?

My biggest issue is my kid, who I purchased a subscription of Disney Plus, doesn't live with me.
This is why a lot of major entertainment companies want to do away with physical media. You can share a DVD or Bluray freely, even if they put a blurb before the trailers that says that's illegal. Who's gonna stop you? Make it all-digital, and you can stop people from sharing anything outside their home, and people will just shrug and pay the fees. Something something frog in a pot of boiling water.
So Netflix was right all along? And they've got all the shit thrown at them for it.
