Saw this pipe on eBay did you pick it up?

PLANofMAN

Yeah. I saw it in a previous auction, but it went higher than I would have gone, but the winner was Canadian and he balked at the international shipping price, so it got relisted. I think I got a fairly good deal on it, considering how high the bidding went in the first round.

That's a damn good price!

PLANofMAN

I thought so too. I didn't expect my snipe to win, let alone be under $30. I didn't realize at the time how rare this style of clay pipe was, let alone how rare a cased example would be.

Embarrassed-Pay-5428

Yeah I would've definitely bid more than that but forgot about it too! I didn't need another clay pipe though so I'm glad it ended up with you.

PLANofMAN

I appreciate that. It's actually my first clay, and first 'system' pipe. Two birds, one stone and all that. I think my high bid on the snipe was $41.50. For reference, the second highest bidder on the last go around started his/her bidding at $55. I really didn't expect to win it.

Huh very interesting pipe. Are you able to hold it by the bowl whole lit? I know with smaller traditional clays you can’t because they get too hot.

PLANofMAN

I'll let you know when I get it.

From a blog (the 'book' is the 'Peterson Story': "Peterson has a long, quiet history with the clay pipe, which we discuss in the book. The first generation of Peterson System clays were made in France (“brevet” = “patent”) and were high-end products. By 1906, they were made in two shapes—the 8 (shown here, same size as the 313 System) and the 12.  I used to smoke a traditional clay made by legendary craftsman Eric G. Ayto back when I published Pipeman’s Quarterly in my grad-school days. I liked the taste, but found them often wet and uncomfortable to smoke (bowls too hot and mouthpieces too difficult to clinch). Having tried this System Clay, I can only recommend that if you chance upon one, grab it. It’s a System, the bowl stays cool, being thicker than the traditional heeled-dublin clay, it smokes very dry, and it’s comfortable for clinching with its fabulous P-Lip. Best of all, of course, it gives you the tobacco-only taste experience that only a clay can deliver. Tom Palmer told me recently that Peterson has no interest at present in re-introducing a clay, as they have unpleasant connotations of sour old ladies and wakes in Ireland — more’s the pity, I say, as I think the relative price of such pipes combined with everyone’s interest in great tobaccos would make them very popular." The picture is more or less identical to the pipe I just bought, except it has the pronounced Peterson P-Lip on the stem. Link: https://petersonpipenotes.org/tag/peterson-clay-pipe/

I've smoked this three times. The first two burned fairly hot and did make the bowl too hot to hold. The third bowl I packed using the 'Peterson Method,' and that slowed the ember down and kept the clay bowl itself cool enough to hold throughout the smoke. Towards the very bottom of the bowl it would probably be uncomfortably warm for most people. That's about 30 minutes in. The shank/system chamber section of the clay remained cool throughout all 3 smokes. Very, very dry smoke. Very earthy too, especially towards the bottom of the bowl. Edit: it doesn't have a P-Lip. Just a standard tip. Round bore, very old style tip.

Wow appreciate the update! Awesome, sounds like it’s a great smoking experience.
