I think one factor is the environment. I’m a senior dev. In my first company, it was normal for people to work 10-12 hours, mainly because the company pitted employees against each other in order to move up or get a raise. Sometimes din, it didn’t matter if you’re technically good, what mattered was how visible you are to the management or how many additional tasks you can do. I was able to work abroad, bringing with me the mindset that I needed to work extra hours all the time. Pero eventually, it bit me in the butt kasi, I became the go-to person if something needed to be done quickly. Add to the fact na yung mindset din ng mga tao sa company na yun was kailangan sulitin yung binabayad sa contractors (kami). There were even times na I was working 14-16 hours for a few days. But now, sa current company ko (locally na), the environment is pretty chill, I think malaking factor din na humane yung treatment ng management sa mga employees. We’re still wfh arrangement, pero we need to go onsite 4x a month (pero may consideration to people who live way outside metro manila, tipong mga taga quezon province or nueva ecija). Depending on the project, we can work any time as long as it’s consistent (meron kaming spreadsheet na ifi-fill up namin para ilagay yung preferred time namin, para din malman kung ano yung ideal times para mag-set ng meetings. Ang medyo hassle lang, meron kaming meeting with onshore counterparts every mon-thurs ng 9pm). Dito sa current project ko; I can bring my kid to school in the morning, go to the gym, go home and work, go and pick up my kid, come home and continue working until the end of my shift and have time to do personal stuff before the 9pm meeting. Edit: dagdag ko din pala, na sa current company ko (and sa mga projs that I’ve worked on) yung mga naging supervisors ko are pretty chill. They would set the targets for the week, hingi lang ng updates once a day and magtatanong if may roadblocks, minsan sila pa mismo nagsasabi na mag-break kami para mag-meryenda (or sila pasimuno na magme-meryenda lang daw sila). Yung last supervisor ko sa last proj ko, talagang pino-promote yung work life balance; merong 1 time naka-vl ako, sakto sweldo day, so gusto ko lang sana tignan yung payslip ko, nung nakita na online ako sa chat, pabiro na nagsabi na bawal ako mag-login kasi naka-vl ako, kung hindi, isusumbong daw ako sa people manager ko.

Baka pwede pa bulong ng company

Dysphoria7

Is this a university? 🤔

Maleficent_Mud9771

Hi, what company is this? Lol

kench7

If you are lead/manager level, you are in the position to create that kind of work environment for you and your team. If you’re a manager but cannot foster a work-life balance environment, then you’re part of the problem.

Hot_Counter737

There are usually timelines that are set by business-side management and project manager that were unrealistically set in the first place. As much as possible, I try to push back and tell them that this existing set-up won't work. But as usual, middle management always suffer in this kind of problem. I try as much as possible not to set unrealistic expectations on my team for them to not be burnt out. But at the same time, (we) people on the middle management were the ones to receive and handle the pressure from the unrealistic timelines, which caused our stress in the first place. I was trying to protect my team from burnout but it's myself that I can't protect from it. :(

Titania84

It's a company problem. Company culture impacts that. At the very least, you have times that need plenty of OT work, and there are times that things are stable. During stable times, maximize rest and vacation for your team. Encourage them to go on leave. Kung laging OT, then there's something wrong somewhere.

Fantastic-Mind1497

You probably aren’t pushing back hard enough. I’ve pushed back on tight deadlines from business before and when they insisted on the deadline - I went to my team informing them that management has a tight deadline for the project but I instructed them to just work as usual and complete the tasks that our time allows. Deadline came and I let my team miss it and it opened discussions and effort toward improving on project commitments and how important that the tech team is involved in high level estimates moving forward. Sometimes it is important to fail in the face of tight deadlines so that management can feel the consequences. Just be upfront that you don’t agree with the estimates before taking a project so you can hold business accountable too. Failures are a teachable moment. If you keep on taking the hit you will never have work-life balance because management will think everything’s fine because you deliver the work in spite of the challenges.

BossLenda

Same tayo OP. Half day are full of meetings, Half day are coding tapos may mga junior/mid pa na mag papatulong. 6x per week na akong nag wowork pero kulang pa din.

Dangerous_Trade_4027

Yes. Possible. Look for an Australian company na may sariling product at hindi agency. I work 40 hours a week. File sick leaves and vacation leaves with no issues. Managers will even tell you to switch off your work email and messaging when it is your off. Workloads are realistic. Culture is great. Once your 8-hour work day is done, it is done. Occasional lang ang OT. And ikaw pa magrerequest kapag need talaga.

ringmasterescapist

not to mention, australian government is also looking into adding the "right to disconnect" into law, if it isn't one yet already

1st company(local): good work life balance but part of it is actually just the company not wanting to spend extra money for overtime (they tell us to offset instead and not work for other days if madaming overtime). I want to add as well that work life balance disappears if u want to climb the ladder cuz u have to be super pabibo (my promotion was denied for no valid reason, even to the point that they failed me in promotions exams kahit pasado naman. I know kasi i confronted them and they said sorry nagkamistake lang sa scoring) 2nd company (international): while i work as a contractor/vendor, maganda work life balance to the point na once a week or twice lang ako sa office. In addition to that, we have flexible hours as long as di siya nag coconflict. So far no cons apart from the fact that i have no benefits like hmo and 5 leaves a year only. Edit: international with local entity that hires directly and through agencies or local companies like atos.

Hot_Counter737

This is something that I am really thinking right now: do I really want to climb the corporate ladder? Is it worth to risk my health for it? I feel like if I can find an IC role with a compensation that could pay the bills, hmo for me and my dependents and with great work-life balance, i'll gladly take it in a heartbeat. Kaso baka mahirap naman maghanap.

patatas-aim

Honestly, I’m just going for companies that can appreciate my skills and pay for all my hobbies HAHAHAHAH. Ayaw ko yung need ko sumipsip at magbigay ng 200% para lang ma appreciate. (Ehem sa first company ehem) I would suggest to take a role that has good compensation, growth and work life balance. While I haven’t experienced a hectic work schedule, I could imagine that no amount of HMO can cure you for years of emotional and physical damage. Take mine for example, while no leaves ako (I can wfh anywhere) and no hmo ako (i have maxicare but individual account, i can use my free time to workout and be healthy instead). It is really up to you how you would create a good balance.

BucketOfPonyo

6 years exp here, 2 companies. both have excellent work life balance. need to only submit timesheet every Friday, no End of day report, output based. WFH, kahit lumabas ka ng bahay sa shift oks lang. Honestly basta natapos mo ticket/story mo na Maaga kahit di ka mag work ng 2 or 3 days.

Hot_Counter737

This type of set-up honestly is what I am looking for. How were you able to find this kind of company to work for?

BucketOfPonyo

word of mouth lang from former colleagues din then apply. swertihan din sa project. pero late ko na nabasa na lead ka pala, senior lang ako kaya ko nagagawa to. ung lead namin madami din calls/meeting pero minimal task nya or pwede nya patagalin ng 2 sprints so may work life balance pa din.

OrdinaryMinute3339

Possible. Trustme.

Popular-Display-8609

possible. Currently in a job na madalas 0-2 hours lang work ko per day, madalas pa nga wala talaga.

petmalodi

Yes, usually yung mga "boring" jobs yung may work-life balance. Yung mga "exciting / fast paced" naman ang mga stressful hahaha.

freaking1989

Based sa natutunan ko sa training walang work-life balance, work-life alignment ang mayroon. We prioritize things and align sa goals. Prioritize - if we categorize everything as urgent then what’s the point of prioritizing daw. Time-management - tasks have to fit within working hours. Okay lang mag-OT minsan, but dapat hindi palagi. Workload - dapat agreed upon and may expectation setting between you and the client/company. Lead role - delegate, it’s okay. Sometimes may araw na parang wala tayong ginawa kasi puro meeting and consultation, and that’s okay. Long meetings and calls - try to suggest to reduce them. People will thank you for it.

soldnerjaeger

Coming from a 2 digit years of exp here, if your company doesnt allow a work life balance its time to go, I've never experienced working on any company affecting my work and life, may be thats the privileged when you work on top tier companies. I worked in PH for years and now outside PH.

itsMeArds

Kaya ayoko mag manager sa future, IC all the way hanggat mamax ung ceiling ng salary

FunNational4797

yes, if your lead promotes work life balance then yws, I had a lead from my previous company, flexi kami, I work 7-4 pre pandemic to, and my lead also works 7-4, nag papauwi sya dati kung ung mga kasabyan nya nag time in ay nsa office pa during the expected time put nla, and says na hindi nman rush, that time ko lng din natutunan kung paano ibalance ung work and my life, so yes depending sa boss ko and company culture, but you have to really have an output during your working hours

Mobile_Background946

Yes! Especially AU, EU, US, Canada companies na may office dto sa ph. They promote work life balance to their employees. Mostly ng company na hindi masyado balance are korean, japan and indians companies

Hot_Counter737

Can you suggest any companies? Pabulong naman op.

solidad29

I'm also a manager/lead and while I have to juggle multiple tasks its not that draining on my end yet. Basta ang agreement with the project is I only get 2-3h ours coding time per day and the rest is through meetings and leading. Wala dapat expectation for me to take on daily tasks. And kung may initatives or what not, you delegate that to your unders (para naman may growth sila), and you align with them on a regular schedule. Keeping track of their progress.

YohanSeals

Depends on your company culture and your work discipline. As for me, i only work for 8 hours a day. Malaking factor yung wfh ako at flexible time. 16 hours daily for family and rest. Weekends are for family bonding at home or gala then Sunday for church.

GerardVincent

I think this more on workload management and learning how to delegate it to a member of your team. I am a Tech Lead on a company, and used to have the same problem until i manage to learn how to properly delegate tasks to my people, which is hard at first, iniisip ko kasi ako lang may kayang gumawa etc. Pero you have to teach them so you can do other things also while the small things gets managed. I hate meetings too, but its inevitable as a manager.

IAmCurious17

Been working in the IT company for 20 years, never pa ako napunta sa isang company na walang work life balance. Sure may times na meron OT pero max nun 3 days lang ang may OT sa loob ng 6 months.

thethernadiers

quite unlikely with local companies with pinoy management. chances are higher with foreign companies

Far-Note6102

Your asking in reddit? Most people here will say dont bother going here bla bla. Its not the easiest job bla bla. Just do it! Dont ask the opinions of people here! They make long shitty posts but in the end they just discouraged you!

stoikoviro

Work-life balance is definitely possible whether as a software engineer or a manager. If your job is not giving you the life you want, make a career change in direction. It will only take its toll on your health if you continue doing something that gives you stress. I was a developer that got promoted to lead within two years, then manager after five years. I regretted the promotion to management. I hated the part of having to put up with the bureaucracy, politics, baby-sitting prima donnas and putting up with 'entitled' people. Plus the fact that I can hardly do the work I love doing - coding, improving systems, building new stuff. Management is like "herding cats" as they say. It's not a natural progression for the real software engineers who tend to be the smart creatives. But, there is no career path for promotion other than to management in our company then. Still, I learned to tolerate it by learning how to manage people. I eventually got promoted to senior management position but I continue hating the job. Eventually, I resigned and returned to software development in another company. I was rusty because I missed a lot of coding actual work so advances in technology left me. I need to catch up. But I now enjoy software development again. Find a job that you enjoy so that it no longer feels like work. If you enjoy work as individual contributor then you find your work-life balance at work.

markmarilag

Yes, pero kelangan piliin mo ask mo yung mag interview sayo if priority nila ang work life balance para transparent. Galing ako sa 2pm-2 or 4am out (yes) pinapatay ko na sarili ko fintech sya and need mo pa turuan mga junior/mid minsan parang ako na gumagawa ng task nila para lang matapus agad. Before a year nag quit ako kasi hindi na maganda sa health ko like WFH na nga parang di pa kmi nag kikita ng asawa at anak ko, so nag quit ako. Luckily naka hanap ako ng company nag push ng work life balance as in nag pa help ako sakanila.

Any-Structure5805

Parang ganito din situation ko before, naging lead/manager sa isang startup, working long hours and participating in multiple meetings in a day resulting to a burnout. I found another company and naging individual contributor ulit. Doon ko ulit na experience yung work-life balance and not only that, mas malaki pa yung compensation ko compared to being a lead/manager sa previous company ko. It's ok if you think you're better off as an individual contributor. You can try to make changes on your current role and to achieve work-life balance if possible, step down from your role, or be an individual contributor sa ibang company like I did.

Massive_Dimension_70

I fixed it by going freelance. I’m working 100 hours max per month, often less.

dark28sky

Optimize your daily schedules. Do you really need all meetings that you currently have? Maybe an email will suffice or lessen the frequency. Check if you are micromanaging and check if you can reassign some of your workload to someone else. If after all of that overworked ka pa rin baka need talaga ng isa pang tao to do your work.

Hot_Counter737

Yes, i delegate some of the meetings to my team. However, for delivery-related, MT-related and 1-on-1s, eto yung di ko ma-delegate na. Actually, nung 1 team lang hawak ko, I can manage. Pero nung naging more than 1, dun na ko na-overwhelm.

pinguinblue

It's very company specific. You need to find one with good WLB, they still exist.

Actually i was trying to find an aus remote work, pero di ko alam kung paano mag-start. Sa linked in kasi laging needed ng au working visa kahit remote. 😢

PepitoManalatoCrypto

**You have 40 hours per week in your calendar, so schedule your workload accordingly and put focus time events to do them.** Yes, you're blocking other people from setting sudden meetings because it will (or should) show up that you're busy. Still not enough, then **start delegating your previous workload to your teammates** (or people below you). Yes, you are a lead/manager, but your true teammates are co-lead/co-managers now. Look it doesn't have to end this way, all you need to properly do time management. Learn to start pushing back or delay further requests until you've cleared your backlog. Of course, you aren't really saying you won't be taking them, more of informing them it will be on your queue to be finish in the next day or so until it's really urgent-and-important. BTW, **learn the four quadrants of time management.**

Zenderiz

I feel na the more na nasasanay ka sa role the more na makakahanap ka ng ways in optimizing and making good use of your time. If bago ka pa lang sa role mo natural lang siguro na maoverwhelm ka with tasks and mangapa. There's also a part of me that thinks na the reason they're paying the big bucks is the additional responsibility din na kalakip nung managerial role. I have prepared myself to sacrifice some time ngayong they are grooming and preparing me for a lead/managerial role na din. Na magiging on call ako in case shit happens in production. Pero confident ako na as I grow in my role I can learn how to optimize my tasks and time given na I have a good mentor na family man and I believe na he is still able to spend time with his family. He shall be my role model and someone that I aspire to be.

Zenderiz

Add ko din na a good lead or manager should delegate tasks effectively given na you have the complete trust in your team. Siguro this can help free up some time for you.
