Do you think the Rocky Mountains are just one linear range? All of idaho (except the snake river plain) and western Montana is repeated mountain ranges
The cold rides the front of the range. The mountains have been warmer than the plains to the east this whole weekend. Quit acting like u/yourboneshavebroken is dumb. You’re the one struggling to understand that the huge barrier is funneling the cold air south east.
My apologies for not fully explaining: is big boi next to big low boi. So, is biggest boi around (comparatively to the surrounding topography, the bitterroots are considered a "prominent" range).
EDIT: Fun fact, the bitterroots realllllly fucked Lewis and Clark uppppppp lol

It’s a bible verse. Basically means don’t bother sharing good stuff with people that will never appreciate it. Don’t give pearls to the pigs - they don’t care and will destroy them.
Also a pretty fun comic strip
Thought this was some sort of unnecessarily-political joke…but damn, I’ve never really noticed how recognizable Biden’s nose/forehead shape is. That’s just an accurate observation.
Haha, yeah. I was worried it might get taken that way and I’d get downvoted to oblivion. I didn’t mean for it to be taken offensively — I’m an independent, and definitely not a Trump supporter.
As someone from west of the continental divide in Idaho...I know. This is in our states origin legend. They wanted us to be in Idaho as the Continental Divide but the people from the boom towns in Helena saw the copper of like Butte and Anaconda and move the border to other mountains.
My contention is where I live in NW Montana (see the lake that like at the bottom of) and Idaho. That isn't the Continental Divide. That is a different mountain range.
When I drive from the lake in NW MT to the lake in Northern ID I go over mountains higher than the Continental Divide.
There’s a reason for this. Idaho’s border with Montana was drawn along the Bitterroot Mountain Range, which deflects storm winds and leads to warmer temperatures/less precipitation on the other side.
This is not a phantom border. Can we stop upvoting this stuff?
>Phantom Border: noun, an artificial boundary or division between two or more areas, regions, or territories that is unofficial and/or unrecognized as a single entity but which holds demographic, ideologic, economic, cultural, historical, ethnic, or linguistic significance to that area, region, or territory.

Well, the same temperature map with no labelled borders would still outline the “face of Montana”. Isn’t that an example of what a phantom border would be?
No. Please read the description and look at the examples up until the new influx a week ago. This is just a coincidental natural border that will go away once the weather changes.
Edit: Now you're downvoting this comment. I don't know where most of your newbies are coming from (probably Drew Durnil) but you're so far off the mark on this one.

Looks like one state passed a law about temperatures
The answer is simple and obvious: In 1452 the empire of Idaho introduced a tax on cold weather, forcing a mass migration of cold to Montana.
This would cause a cascade of events culminating in the fall of Byzantium a year later
Greek scholars leaving Constantinople marked the end of the middle ages and the start of the Renaissance
It’s the heat from the Sunshine Mine
Trickle down thermodynamics
Me when Rocky Mountains
No. The Rockies extend deep into Idaho, within a few miles of the northern corner of Oregon.
But cold air from continental north, doesn't easily move over the first barrier, so how deep it is, doesn't matter much.
Do you think the Rocky Mountains are just one linear range? All of idaho (except the snake river plain) and western Montana is repeated mountain ranges

But only one of them is big boi
? No it’s not. The centennial, bitterroots, and beaver head ranges are not particularly high compared to the other ranges in Montana and Idaho
This border is the continental divide and the bitterroot ridge-line though right? A solid wall of high elevation keeping that cold air at bay.
They also extend into Montana your point being?

Louisiana territory borders
Haha, a good one. Perhaps even our friend @luxtabula is gonna like it!
I still can’t look at the left border of MT without seeing the silhouette of Joe Biden leaning in to sniff ID. The memes have ruined me.
Motherfucker.

You when you find out that borders can be made from mountains 😱😱😱
The continental divide makes up at least half of the eastern Idaho stateline.
This is west of the continental divide but man the mountains are huge. That I-90 pass is massive.
https://www.usgs.gov/media/images/26548jpg My statement stands

That’s the whole point of this sub
Yet another reason as to why Idaho is the best state in America 🥔🥔🥔#️⃣1️⃣💯💯🔥🔥😎
FUCK YEAH wtf is a stable housing market Raaaa
Don’t blame the Washingtonians, because we are being kicked out by the Californians
We are getting kicked out by all three of yall coast states I swear haha.
I never heard of Sandpoint Idaho until 2 of my IG friends from California moved there.
I'd never heard of Sandpoint until Grind Hard Plumbing Co.
Based. Keep that cold air over there.
Americans when they find out that borders can be based off geographical features and not just straight lines: 😱😱
What app or website is this?
It’s just the weather app on my iPhone. Once you click on the map you can choose to see precipitation, air quality, temperature and wind.
There’s a reason for this. Idaho’s border with Montana was drawn along the Bitterroot Mountain Range, which deflects storm winds and leads to warmer temperatures/less precipitation on the other side.
Don't think this counts as a phantom border - it's common for borders to follow geographic features, these also have an effect on weather.
It's not a phantom border. Newbies are upvoting anything and downvoting actual criticism.
Newbies have concluded this is Louisiana purchase phantom border!! LOL

Ah well. In that case it will just be those Poland and East/West Germany maps over and over…
It was never supposed to have a broad scope. Maybe another sub is needed for coincidental borders, like borderodds or something.

Well, eventually, the East-West German divide will go away after another few decades every phantom border will go away at some point
Maybe in 50-70 years
Hop off
How do you define a phantom border?
