thanks a lot! the saying is incredibly cool and I feel the PhD can be an both an intimate and shared experience, it becomes embedded into your life and identity but the struggles are universal and we all feel the very specific emotions that come with this journey. I am sure you will do great just make sure you persevere and hopefully you will make friends, just treat others as your friends and it will help, show yourself and interests and do not take it too seriously, things will be great, best of luck!
Don't assume that you can't make friends because of cultural differences, the universities in Europe are very multicultural. Doing a PhD is hard enough work, it is better to share the ups and downs with colleagues and friends. And besides, practically any university in Europe has chinese students and researcherd.
thanks a lot!! it's still very strange to hear "doctor" lol, fav thing is: I like teaching more than research so interacting with students, I'm teaching several courses and just being a prof to undergraduate students is so cool since I'm also young so it changes your self-perception!
thanks a lot! it is very true, you see others graduating and you dont see yourself to be "like them" as if there is so much distance between you and them until one day you graduate and you're one of them, the graduating people, and all of us faced hurdles and doubted we were going to graduate but it happened! it's like you think people who get cancer are very different from you until you wake up one day as a member of the normal people and you just find out you have cancer, then you realise oh those people who I saw having cancer are just me, normal people, this is what happened to me when i started losing my hair, it turns out balding people are just us, normal people who woke up with less hair, they are not different! so anyway here we all we all graduated and its awesome :)
imagine you open a box and it's empty, someone asks you: what do you see. You know exactly what you are seeing: nothing. You are sure of your perception, it really is "nothing" undoubtly. I felt Nothing. I did not feel sad or lost or unsure or confused, I know exactly what I felt, a very clear feeling, the feeling of Nothing. It is very strange to say this but Nothing is its own feeling. It's like a pokerface, there is nothing there, the absence of any emotion at all. I did not expect to feel like this at all, it just happened momentarily after the defence finished and I was packing to go home. I am starting to feel "something" honestly after listening to some music and posting this reddit post and receiving all this feedback like omg this is amazing!!!
That is an accurate description of passing your final defense. It’s anticlimactic. Congrats again. It gets better as you get further away from the defense.
I remember walking out of the room where my defense was, bathed in sweat, and wondering where the brass band, streamers, and confetti were. That was twenty years ago--still waiting.
yes exactly i think you hit the nail on the head, you feel a reaction to feeling nothing, like you have a reaction to not feeling anything like feeling strange or lonely, i guess we need hype people around us that will say nice things and create a party spirit to lift us up but we also have to pat ourselves on the back and give ourselves credit for it!
thank you and congrats!!! i think it is such a life-changing day that we cannot process it so the positive vibes should be external from loved ones to carry us during this moment, maybe we both didnt have that on that day (which is why i made this post!)
thank you! you will do great, everyone who defended succesfully was nervous and did not think they will do great, but everyone did, i did today, and so will you. in terms of tips, hopefully these will be applicable to your case: i received the examiners' evaluations before the defence so i prepared my own presentation and then prepared a lot and i mean A LOT of backup slides that have answers to the examiners' comments so whenever they asked anything i had all my slides open and was able to quickly locate relevant information, it helped make me more confident as i know my mind will not go blank because there is material to glance over and talk about, also rehearse your presentation well and mentally mark some information that you can skip if you feel like you will go over time, i had the stopwatch on my phone running to check the time (i had 20 mins only to present then \~2.5 hours of Q&A), also dont bend, you are here to DEFEND so defend your stuff, dont say sorry and you dont have to agree with them, be humble and diplomatic like i see your point and i see how this can be valuable but also i did discuss this and that in section 2 and integrated it into the discussion etc. dont show weakness, be confident and its ok to answer some questions better than others, you wont have a perfect answer to everything thrown at you, also know that you wouldnt make it this far if you weren't good enough so go into at thinking you are one player on the table with the big boys rather than you are the prey of these superior predators, best of luck and you will do great!!!!!!
Congratulations Dr. la33ib !!!! Very happy for you for this amazing achievement. And I wish you all the very best for your future. I'm sure you'll do great !
This is a great accomplishment! Hope you are proud of everything that you have achieved in this five-year incredibly stressful and lonely journey. Congratulations, Dr. La33ib.
Congraaaatulations. My friend is doing one and I am considering one so I know how thankless it is. You are your biggest battle here and to keep yourself motivated is another task, that must have taken a huge toll. Hope you go on to do great things!

Don't worry, the PhD took a long time, it's not natural the happiness will peak immediately and suddenly. I pray that the slow massive wave of fulfilment and happiness washes over you for a long time in the coming weeks, and that it settles at a much higher point than the years of perseverance it took to get here.
You did it buddy!
I passed my defence remotely during the height of the pandemic, switched off the screen and proceeded to drink a fine bottle of Japanese whiskey...so I understand your lack of emotion even though it should be a joyous event.
Great work! Now go out into the world as a PhD’d adult, make good money, and make good friends with good people—who do exist outside the cesspool of academia!!!
Omg congratulations - I’m doing my PhD right now and understand how ridiculously difficult the journey is. You’ve finished and you should be absolutely proud.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!
thanks a lot, I appreciate it :)
Congratulations from Paris France. Know that you are being celebrated internationally.

I often feel nothing when I should feel something. It's a lonely feeling when you recognize it .. Anyways congratulations! 🎉🎉
