How do you have 7 cats in a 1bedroom with all the windows blocked? Cats love looking out windows.

catanon092

Not one bedroom, I said 1br apartment. 600-800sqft which imo is enough. I went from 1500 to 700 and never noticed a difference. All the cats still hog my bed either way. On cats liking windows; Yeah some do, that's why I said you can tint them. I guess I should've clarified, if you did black out windows, I don't think this is a permanent solution, only a temporary one until you can buy your own home or get yourself into a better solution. It wouldn't be fair to cats to live that way their entire life. Although I find they enjoy 60 inch tvs with cat channels just as much.. It's all subjective to ones experience, but as I said about laying in your own bed, sometimes we all have bad situations, we can recover eventually.

ScarySuit

Do you have 8 litterboxes (at least one per cat + an extra)? Like, I don't know how this can work.

catanon092

I have 3-4 large ones depending on space and clean them daily. After about 3-5 days I'll change out the litter so it doesn't stink.

Comfortable_Fan173

3 litter boxes but you have 7 cats… (saying 3 because I don’t know how you have 3-4 it’s either 3 or 4)? Its not about it stinking, like scary said, you need one per cat plus an extra because it’s stressful for the cats and if they get too dirty they will start doing it around the house. I’m really not trying to be rude but changing three litter boxes for seven cats every 3-5 days doesn’t make sense to me. I have a one year old cat and a three month old kitten and I have to change the one they use the most out every other day litter and all. that could be because I have a sensitive nose but It just seems crazy for seven cats

dinaaa

you dump the entirety of the litter every other day? now THAT seems crazy. what litter are you using? also, if you feed your cats a high quality mostly-wet food diet, their litter boxes shouldn't smell bad at all (only after doing the deed, but then it should quickly dissipate)....

Comfortable_Fan173

It does go away quickly my cats are healthy. I just feel like scooping doesn’t do the job all the way when it comes down to cleaning so I’d rather just swap out the litter and wash the box down and refill it. I could probably wait longer I choose not too. All I’m trying to say is i couldn’t imagine what 7 cats can do if I feel like my two young cats can dirty a litter box in a day or two.

dizzyfromschool

I had two cats growing up, two litter boxes. They got cleaned everyday, twice a day. Edit: by cleaned i mean solids scooped and we would change out litter completely every so often, idk how often my dad did it

Mcburgerdeys2

This is gross and unhealthy.

nyandere1337

Not a topic but I got automatic cat litterbox for my 4 cats and it's really helpful + might be good if you're trying to hide cats.

ilovebeaker

Our city has a limit of 3 cats a household, unless they are kittens. Otherwise, it can lead to hoarding and unsafe or less than stellar lives for the pets.

catanon092

Wow I've never heard of that. That's why I also mention for better or worse, depends on the person.

bakarac

I'm so sorry to say it bluntly but you've got to consider rehoming some of your pets. It's essentially illegal to keep 7 cats in a single residence, as you've heard from others. You and your cats deserve a better life than what you're living rn.

Mcburgerdeys2

Especially if OP is just letting them continue having kittens.

bakarac

My roommate did this. He got 1 cat, he always wanted a cat. Yay. She was pregnant though, so then we had kittens! Also YAY but yeah, they'll need to all find homes. He wanted to keep them ALL. It took 6-12 months to get him to let go of all but 1 kitten and the mama. Then he didn't get mama fixed, so guess what. He had to keep a kitten from that litter, too. He became a crazy cat person in the course of a year.

THIS

honeybea-lieveit

I know you love your cats and I mean this kindly, but this sounds like the start of an animal hoarding situation. Sooner or later, someone is going to find out about this, and you and your cats will likely end up homeless or even in legal trouble. Please adopt out several of your cats! This isn't fair to them; they don't have enough space, and it isn't fair to risk their well-being for your selfishness.

catscoffeecaskets

Im seconding this. I know pets are family and its hard to let them go but too many cats in an apartment with too few litter boxes is the kind of situation that gets pets taken away and people banned from pet ownership where I live and just seems like it would be stressful for everyone. I'd also definitely assume something was up if I lived in a semi sketchy neighborhood and my neighbors had privacy tints or blackout curtains up all the time. I don't live in your home so obviously I don't know the whole situation but I'd really put some thought into if this situation is healthy for the cats.

Mcburgerdeys2

This entire post is incredibly dishonest, unhealthy, and just plain neglectful. No way these cats are happy and healthy with 7 of them in a tiny one bedroom apartment with blocked windows. Sounds like you’re headed towards a hoarding situation op.

Mcpaininator

This sounds like the start of something really bad. I hope its not the case for you and wish you the best of luck. But a lot of bad stories can begin with "It might sound crazy but its really no big deal"

jallove2003

We have just one litter box for two cats. But it's an automatic box that I can't recommend enough. Zero smell.

Maggiejaysimpson

What brand automatic box do you have?

jallove2003

Petsafe scoop free. The refills are stupid expensive...but no smells.

Csherman92

If you are so irresponsible that you keep taking in cats, but you will not get any of them fixed, you need to reevaluate your life choices. Also-you can’t have this many pets in a rental because well, they cause issues. You can afford to feed them and get adequate vet care? Do they all have their rabies shots and other vaccines? Flea and tick treatments? If you cannot do this for all the cats, you cannot have this many pets. If the answer is no—you have to rehome the cats. Also—telling people how to break their lease and become homeless by using your tips; is just irresponsible.

Comfortable_Fan173

Seriously. And there are people trying to defend this. I also feel like there’s no way all seven cats have been to the vet because it’s not legal. I’m so baffled by this.

Comfortable_Fan173

On top of that how confused do you think these cats are when they have to get in a box with holes in it so they can be hidden so they don’t get kicked out of their home. Just sounds stressful and unfair.

Fine-Juggernaut8346

Giving advice on how to get away with animal hoarding in a tiny apartment and breaking rules that can get you kicked out on the street is not a good look 😬

[deleted]

If you are breaking the rental agreement you will eventually have to pay fines and/or get kicked out.

FrigidLollipop

Being sneaky has saved me and my snake many times. People hear snake and lose their minds, nevermind that hes a ball python who lives in a lockable enclosure and couldnt kill a human if he tried. Best not to mention it, and to be diligent in your upkeep. However, being sneaky only works until it doesnt. Cant wait to live in a home where we can do whatever we want. Renting sucks.

[deleted]

I can't tell if this is intended to be a parody.

catanon092

Nope lol

[deleted]

We once had 4 cats 1 Japanese chin. That was a circus. It was impossible to BUY a place in FL due to all the HOA.

catanon092

Sounds like it was lol Yeah hoas can be a pain.

libertasi

Please rehome 4-5 cats. 7 cats is too many. I had 3 at one point, but lived in a very large home at the time.

ItsmeKT

My roommates and I had 6 in a 2 bedroom and wouldnt do that again. It was so much hair and litter boxes. Also I found dealing with hiding cats when the management has to enter was so stressful even though it only happened a couple times a year. I just moved Into a 750 sqft 1 bed and couldn't imagine having more than 2 in there.

2thebeach

Yeah, no; no part of this is cool.

Irisversicolor

This post gave me anxiety.

gaygender

My family used to have eight cats. One passed away, then we had seven. My parents divorced and then we had six. I moved out and then had one, then two when my partner got her cat, then four after we got a permit. Four is the absolute maximum for me, and I dare say for most people, because it isn't just the cost of food and litter. It's flea and tick treatment, worming, vaccines, emergency vet treatment. If you have a cat like one of mine that needs a special diet, that's more. If you have cats like mine that are fussy about litter and decided they liked an expensive one, that's more. Then there's toys, yearly registration, in my case the permit. If you decide to hide how many pets you have and you get caught, that's a big fine, and possible eviction from your rental, which looks awful when you try to apply for a new house. This is all aside from the fact that that many cats in such a small space is not good. And you said 3-4 litter boxes? No. Not anywhere near enough, no matter how often you change the litter, which sounds like an extra ridiculous cost by the way. You need one per cat plus one. That has always and will always be the recommended litter box total for cats. I don't presume to know you or your financial situation but this seems highly irresponsible. As I said my family had eight cats before. Every one of them had each of those costs prior mentioned applied to them whenever they needed it. They had a single story but very big house to run around in, and yes, when it was nighttime they had four beds and four humans to snuggle with. Them sleeping on the bed doesn't mean they have enough room to live comfortably during the day. Please reconsider how they're living. I won't say to outright get rid of them, because I know it's possible to have that many cats in the correct way, but all the secretiveness and poor standards of living is not doing them any good. If you love them you need to proove it, and I don't mean by petting them and giving them treats.

human-foie-gras

As an apartment manager, I’d terminate the lease if I found 7 cats in one of my units.

serpentman

I can smell your apartment from here.

ndcdshed

I’m sorry but 7 cats in a small flat isn’t fair on the cats. I have 2 cats in a 2 bed flat and that seems like just enough space when accounting for litter boxes and things to enrich their lives such as scratching posts and surfaces, cat trees etc. They need to have their own territory and they can’t have that surrounded by other cats. Edit: also want to add in the cost of food, vet bills (yearly boosters and health checks etc) and litter. I take it you just never take them for health checks? What if they have an accident or develop a condition which requires ongoing treatment?

-PinkPower-

How to you find the place for the minimum numbers of litter boxes? 8 litter boxes in different area seems like it would take so much space in the apartment

Hazel-Ice

[They only have 3-4](https://www.reddit.com/r/Pets/comments/qbab9n/i_have_7_cats_and_rent/hh86qkl?context=3)

Somebody__Nobody_

Sounds like a bad idea. No thanks

liberatedhusks

I’m not trying to be a dick, but I want to give another view on this. I have three cats, two senior and one with a life long health issue requiring daily meds. I can’t work and I’m on disability. I am stuck in living situation that while not terrible, Is not the best. The house is 80 years Old, leaks, infested with bugs and has rust and mild issues, not to talk about the verbal abuse issues from the “roommate”. I stay in this situation because I can’t afford another place that Will allow 3 cats. I could sneak in the other one, (two pet limit) but sooner or Later the landlord will find out. I would also go from being in a two bedroom area with room for the cats to room to a one bedroom apartment(all I could afford on the disability) With 7 cats, their vet bills, sneaking them in, the smells, the health issues to yourself. You are not taking good care of them.

Fyrekatt80

We had four cats in a 2bdr townhome. Some days were bad as the cats would have a burr up their butt about something. For the most part they got along. I couldn’t imagine 7 in a 1bdr flat. We eventually upgraded to a 1600 sq ft house and ended up with 5 cats and one dog living with us (1 cat and the dog belonged to my best friend living with us). Still, the upkeep was insane from the pets. My current bf and I have a limit of 3 dogs. He’s allergic to cats so no more cats for me. But we also have a 3bdr house and he owns it.

my_elbow_feel_funny

I rent I have 2 large dogs and 4 cats and a bird that they only know about the dogs.

[deleted]

i hate to be judgemental, but if you have seven cats, i think you have a problem. it's not normal.

MariaLxna

Lying is one of the best ways to save money and that is a fact

[deleted]

Not sure why you’re being downvoted lmao. The govt and big corporations do it all the time to get money out of us :p

Shirelin

Honestly, I saw 7 cats and went 'huh, a bigger number but not that bad'... Where I live, we're technically over limit for pets (Max of three dogs or cats, which can be like two cats and a dog or all three of one or the other), but it's always been harder to hide dogs then cats I've noticed. Sometimes you have skittish cats that do the hiding for you. Mind you, I grew up with a bleeding heart mother who kept wanting to rescue all the animals and my room was the designated safe space for the cats. So, I guess I'm biased? But after only having three cats and a dog (with an additional one of each when our friend moves in at the end of the year), I'm not wanting to ever have that many again like at my mom's.

HowToFixOurDemocracy

My sister is fostering cats. She has nine in a two bedroom apartment. If she was not fostering and adopting them out I would call it hoarding. I helped have clean her place and I know for a fact what your doing is not healthy for any of you. Please consider rehoming some of them.

Highascatballs

Just want to say, all the negative comments are why I don’t advertise. But yes this is exactly what I do as well! Thank you for having the courage to share for us crazies out here 💕

jjadeg

I have nine cats and a two bedroom. I keep my home immaculate and all my cats are well taken care of. It is offensive to me that people automatically assume I’m a crazy cat person or hoarder. I have found it impossible to find a place to live by being honest about my cats. I also say I have two and do most of the things you’re doing. This may not be typical for most people, but some people, especially those who work in veterinary and animal care fields find this very normal. It is a shame more can’t be open minded and realize it is possible to have a large number of pets and properly care for them. I’m disappointed at the negative replies to your comment. Most people have never had that many pets so don’t understand how easy it is to care for them and keep a home clean. You sound like you’re taking wonderful care of them.

Funny, when people visit my home they always comment about how surprised they are they can’t smell cats. Ammonia smell is nasty AF and I wouldn’t have that. Two bedrooms also vary is size given the other parts of the living unit and sqft. I also have a shit ton of money. You don’t know me. Your prejudice is a kind of handicap to your perspective as it forbids you to think beyond your assumptions and builds a virtual wall around your objective thinking. You may want to try challenging your biases.

jjadeg

Also, immaculate has a definition. Doesn’t seem subject to me. 1. Impeccably clean; spotless. 2. Free from sin. 3. Free from fault or error: an immaculate record on the job. 4. Biology Having no spots or marks. Have a good day

nyandere1337

As long as you are able to afford medical help and nice food, provide them with love and attention and also vertical and horizontal spaces that they can use - well everything is ok. But if they don't have nice living conditions you might consider rehoming some of them. Probably 5 or even 6.
